Also, if you take the write-off, when you sell your house

One is considered sale of your home and the office portion is considered sale of business property. Sometimes it isn't worth it. It can get complicated, so make sure you know what you're doing up front; good advice below to see a good accountant. Good luck.

Yes, yes, yes. Go IC and sell yourself. Get out of the house sm
and actually DRIVE to places where transcription takes place. Leave a business card, a brochure, etc. Usually, you'll have opportunity RIGHT THEN AND THERE to meet one of the doctors. Two practices I stopped at made me WAIT in the waiting room while they got the MD to meet me because they were DESPERATE to find someone who KNEW what they were doing. I have turned down work in the past year because I was not able to keep up. One of these days, I might think of operating a small company. For now, I'm quite content.
Price that house to SELL and NOW!
You need cash flow and cannot afford to wait around for your big profit. I have also flipped houses. This is a prime example of exactly what happens when one thing goes awry in your plan. You need to be more prepared to weather a storm in the future, but for right now you need to unload that house. Best of luck to you. :-)
"close" your home office before you sell your house...sm
then you don't have to do anything with the tax depreciation, etc.
"close" your home office before you sell your house and you will have no problem..nm

I can use the deduction now, and when old and ready to sell, hope sell price is high enough won't
matter. Also, I think there is a time frame of not working that negates the job deduction factor.
Buy if from your husband. Have him write you a receipt. Write it off completely or
depreciate it over a few years.
So you can fix it up enough to sell it-- then do so
and split the money with the sister. So what if she didn't help. You should be able to get at least 5K if you clean it up. So work two weekends, clean it out, sell it and take your half of the 5K, which is $2500 which is more than enough to cover the $1000 you need. And think of it as a blessing for his sister. Plus $2500 is a nice chunk of change for house de-junking, don't you think?
Actually, if you did turn around and sell
the computer and stole the SS numbers, don't you think you would be arrested and maybe go to jail or even be fined.
Sure, ya could, but would ya!
We have stood behind what we sell.
How many times should we exchange the pedal before she tries to troubleshoot it through the software or the computer? We exchanged it even though we did not feel that was the problem. When the original pedal came back to us it was confirmed that the problem was not the pedal. The pedals we use are widely considered by the transcription industry to be the most durable pedal available. They are Infinity pedals.
Do you have property you can sell or
borrow against? A house you can take an equity loan on??
Bless your heart. I feel for you.
Don't sell yourself short....
I charged docs/clinics 12-14 cents/line 5 years ago. They had no problem with this. Being paid by the hour in Canada at home where I work for a local hospital I make $18.33/hr plus 14% in lieu of benefits plus 4% vacation pay ($21.73 per hour) For contract work MT's in my area charge $25 per hour or 14 cents a line. This is not through MT companies - just for docs asking for extra help and our Physiotherapy Depts that do independent medical assessments contract it out to local MTs. Hope this helps. I'm in Ontario
Don't sell yourself short.
If you think that you need to "lower" your rate because you're not driving and picking up, then charge .10/line; otherwise, I would stick with the .11/line and consider it a "raise" if you get the job. Honestly, if the OM is happy with the quality she'll get at .06/line, then you probably didn't want that account anyway because I have found those OMs are the biggest pains and you're better off without the aggravation. JMO.
Anybody sell on Ebay? If so...
I've bought dozens of things on Ebay, only one item there.. today.. then it tells me I have a second chance offer. Not sure what this means, even after reading what it said about it. Any help appreciated !
Sell the furniture if you have to
You can always replace it later. I once sold a bedroom suite to come up with a mtg payment when I hit a low period in my life.
My fear is that your home does not sell for 30G. In Calif., real estate market is saturated with homes not moving and this is not the best time in the world to "flip" a house.
Sell my own stuff.
I had to take my site down for a while because I've been too busy but I make soaps, candles, rice socks, bird houses...lots of stuff.
I'd just get a new computer and sell the old one.
You can get a new computer for $299 when Dell or HP has their closeout model sales or refurbs. Otherwise, you can buy RAM cheap and install it yourself. It's pretty basic. What kind of system do you have? You need to make sure you have an open slot for additional memory.
Should I sell my Lanier?
I have an older Lanier transcribing machine. I do not plan on ever working for a company that uses it. I'm not officially selling it yet, just want feedback from my fellow MT's what I should do. I work after hours using regular mini-cassette tapes for local companies and another company uses Gear Player. If there's an MT that can use this one, I'd gladly help out! Thanks in advance...
Don't sell yourself short
Hiring seems to have slowed down quite a bit over the past couple of months (from what I've seen). I have four years in and have been looking for a second company and I can't even find one right now. I know four years is nothing compared to most, but still. I could take my pick in companies this past spring/summer...this always happens though. There will always be a slow down depending on the time of year.
Give it some time, you will find a company THAT PAYS.
Good Luck!!
why would you sell, take the money, then not provide (sm)
sounds like a scam to me
well, sounds like you're trying to sell something
Does anybody sell on e-Bay to supplement MT income?
How hard is it. Are you successful. I've been thinking about it and wondered about other MT successes. Thanks
Oops, that was sell items on E-Bay (sm)
So annoyed I can't spell.
I'm wondering if you guys that are trying to sell
that you have already bought, or are planning to buy. Just wondering because - well, Becky said out before the holidays.
I am thinking I would like to sell my house too but the main reason is it needs so much work done to it, we don't have enough room here, we don't really have the money to do the work that needs to be done, it's an older house (50 years old), I don't have an office, we have one tiny bathroom, the walls/trim need to be replaced and depress me. And I'm thinking maybe I'd rather RENT a bigger place with more bathrooms and an office than buy another house and have to maintain it. I know that you don't build up equity that way but I just feel stuck here and with renting, you are free to move when you get tired of it!
Get a belly band. They sell them on e-bay! sm
There is a thing called a belly band. Breeders use these for their males to prevent them from hiking in the house. It is a band that goes around their belly and you put a mini pad or panty liner to absorb the "wee wee" They are usually between $8 to 10 and are machine washable and you can get the mini pads or panty lines for about $1 per package. I used doggy diapers on my girl puppies when they were small and also when they are in heat. They work great! I especially used them when we went to stay at a relative's house and she had brand new carpet and my shih-tzu was just a baby and not yet potty trained. Hope this helps you. Just try searching the web or e-bay for belly bands or doggie diapers. For a male, you want a belly band.
You might want to sell the hardcover version...
...on ebay and invest in the CD. It has a search feature, generics with trade names, etc. You will love it!
AGREE--they only do this to SELL MORE BOOKS. nm
AMA Style Guide or Chicago Manual of Style. Go read all the classified ads for people in editing and publishing.
I think that only he and Taylor will sell their records....sm
I can't envision ever buying anything that Katherine or Elliott recorded.
Katherine should have gone home last night.
I think Taylor will sell records
I have his second indie CD and it's fabulous. All original songs, written by him, and it's great. Grab it if you can. I really don't think Kat will do all that much after this, really. I don't think she has the draw to bring people out to a concert. Obviously, Taylor does. I think Kelly Clarkson could have taken that song that Kat butchered and at least tried to do something with it...made it something worth listening to. Kat really, really messed that one up.
Ideas of how one would sell a business, non-MT. NM

This s/b on the classified board, she's trying to sell it.
I have a book to sell if you are interested
I bought it a year ago thinking I was going to take the exam but then realized that I do not meet the requirements - that I should take the RMT exam. Therefore, it is brand new and has never been used. If you are interested, let me know.
It is so rare that people sell their used
IT software, and when I've seen it up for sale, the person selling usually wants $150 or even more for it.
I purchased mine new from Textware Solutions. It just wasn't worth it to me to wait for someone to put one up for sale and you have to count on them to get the license transfer done, I think. With the extra production I'm able to do with it, I figure the software paid for itself in a month.
I agree and never would I sell my client
This is why we must be careful with sending resumes with client info on it. I leave my client info off - they only need to know specialty and how many years of experience, not the client's name.
Sure, there will always be houses to sell. Buyers on the other hand? sm
The whole economy is on paper with nothing backing it anymore. If banks stop lending, who will buy?
Have you tried private dealers? This way you sell direct to them. They usually can SM
be found at shows and auctions, much like local gun or computer shows. I know someone who does this for a living.
I sell Avon, have the samples, and haven't even tried it yet!
Master of none! LOL!
Is this beauty control? I use to sell, but never did parties. SM
I had my opening party, but that was it. I served the food at the table in the kitchen. Everyone just helped themselves and then sat in the chairs I had out in the livingroom to eat. Once we got started, everyone pretty much disposed of their plates and then settled in. I think it worked out good. I had everything ready when they showed up, but I think that everyone pretty much waits until other people get there before they start eating. I would definitely offer drinks when they get there though.
The menu sounds great, so don't worry about that. Seems like a lot of variety for them to choose from.
Don't be nervous...just relax and enjoy it. That's the purpose of the spa party :) Good luck!
Sell items fast on www.craigslist.org
I have sold many items locally on this site. Find your town and take a look. You'll be amazed.

We sell looms, books pertaining to that..
Would that be something that would be eligible?
The owner can sell on Ebay or Amazon, thus
can take the responsibility and offer a limited warranty that it performs properly. Or can recondition the equipment. Myself, I would not buy and Lanier is expensive. A lot of job worksites want MTs to provide/purchase this expensive stuff, no way.
Who knows if you will continue with the service and if not, you have equipment that only works with services that have that equipment. Nope, not me, would not buy, would not sell the owners equipment. It will come back to "you" and owner may not accept and remedy
Not to be a downer, but how does one sell a transcription business? - sm
I mean, what exactly are you selling? Once the contracts change hands, there is no obligation on the part of the clients to stay with the new service. I'm only saying this because I was with a company that "purchased" another financially strapped service and it did not work out well at all.
Wait till they steal our information, sell it and
our identities are stolen. This is not right because if any of us had a choice, we would not want our records of any kind going overseas to be managed or transcribed, etc. I think this violates our privacy big time and should be actively brought to the attention of all the stupid government officials. Wait till they have someone steal their identity or money or whatever. Think they will rethink this. Shame something has to happen to the rich folks before anyone will do anything about tightening things and even if they did enact laws, would these overseas companies abide by them. NOT.
I just think when the whole population ends up on the street, they won't be able to hide it then. I feel sorry for the generations to come. How would they save anything for retirement. I can't even do that.
We won't sell it from under them. Never. If they want to do a owner finance kind of thing, they w

Doesn't that make the software you go to sell on ebay
unusable then because the key HAS been used from the software?
Link doesn't work, but none sell for more than $290 on the site.
Exactly which one did you pay $350 for?
I have a few Stedman's word books that I plan to sell, sm
if you're interested, as I updated with the newest editions. These older ones would still be of big help you. Email me if you're interested and I'll get a list together for you.
You'll find that hospital transcription is waaaaay more interesting than clinic!
If I don't hear from you, good luck! Working for a hospital is the way to go these days. Good for you!
They sell these droplets that you put on paper and it attracts them and they stick (sm)
there is also some kind of stuff you cand put around outside and under your house...sorry I'm sleepy and don't remember the name. maybe d-con?
AAMT constantly changes the rules every time they have a new edition of their BOS to sell.
They've been taking advantage of MT's for years and have no shame. I want no part of it, and never have.
I'm not a very "outgoing" person and I find extremely difficult to sell myself. So the ide
going door to door selling myself causes me to have a major anxiety attack! But here is my two cents anyway. I work FT for a local hospital from home, but I have two of my own accounts I do on the side. My biggest piece of advice is always carry a business card, ALWAYS! Wherever you're at, make sure you have them in your purse. I have found that when I go the new doctor's office, like for example recently I was referred to a dermatologist for a mole removal. While there the doctor chit chatted with me and asked me what I did and I said I was a transcriptionist. She asked how long I had been doing that and I told her 15 years, yada, yada. Anyway, long story short, she asked if I was able to take on more work and I said sure. She asked me to leave a business card with her and she would have the OM call me. I left a card and a couple days later sent a followup letter basically thanking her for her time and her wonderful bed side manner and then included another card with the letter with a little friendly and if you ever need any help with your transcription, remember to give me a call...
They did and they are one of my greatest accounts. One other time at an auction at a business school that was going under, my husband (who never meets a stranger) struck up a conversation with this very professional looking woman who was buying up all the good office furniture and equipment. It seemed like she was willing to outbid everybody and so my husband being curious struck of a conversation and found out she was a psychologist opening up a new office and was there to try to get some office supplies. He proceeded to introduce me and tell her that I was a transcriptionist. She asked if I had a card and I did. Gave it to her, wrote down my per line rate on the back with a note that said it was negotiable and to give me call. She did and that is the second account I have.
I mean if you have the personality to sell yourself and go door to door, I say go for it. I'm just one of those stand-offish kind of people that has trouble making the first move, but once the door is opened for me, I'm always prepared.
