In Reply to: anyone have personal experience with leasing a vehicle - advice please
having one completely paid off, I finally got into leasing. I traded for a lease car and had it for 4 years. It was in great shape, inside and out at the end of lease period. I took pictures of the car from all angles to cover myself. Then I "traded" that for another lease, the car which I have now. The payments for lease cars are the same as if you were buying one on loan. The higher the down payment on the lease, the lower the payments are. The longer the lease period, the lesser the monthly payments but there is also the interest charge to consider.
At the end of the lease, though, you have the option of trading it for another car or buying it outright. I leased my current car, a mini SUV, for 4 years with payments of $300 per month, then ended up buying it for $7K at the end of the lease period. I essentially paid the same amount leasing and buying this car as if I had a loan on it. Leasing is not cheap, but you always have a new car. With leasing, you get no equity in the vehicle. If you are a person who wants a new car all the time, then leasing might be good for you. I like a new car all the time, too, but the monthly payments are too hard on my budget. Also with a lease you are required to keep up with the maintenance of the vehicle--more so than if you owned it outright. I don't quite understand your statement about "low payment because you only pay for the amount of money it would depreciate for the time you own it." You never own it, and the monthly payments aren't low.
I hope this helps. I haven't had my caffeine yet.

The MT company I work for supplies my computer but I have account on the side from my home computer. I had a computer "cracker" here last week for a serious problem and he suggested I go on line and get a Gateway. Does anyone have any input?
before buying one...
You should maybe rent one for the weekend, drive it around, and see how you like it. I had a rental when my son wrecked his truck, a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I fell absolutely in love and my hubby got me one for Christmas!
Renting one for the weekend will give you a pretty good idea if you're gonna like it or not. I personally have never owned a convertible, but did drive one (my bosses wife's car) and it was ok, though not that great...good luck!
Not buying it...sm
I didn't graduate from CS or from either of the other 2 schools considered the BIG 3. I had a recruiter from MQ call me the very week I passed my course. My instructor gave them my name after I graduated.
And if you look on MQs website under FAQ, it states that under certain circumstances, they will accept candidates with less than 1 year experience if they graduated from ONE of the MT schools MQ has a relationship with.
Sorry. Not buying it.
You must work for the folks who are pushing this fiasco. I can tell you from first hand experience. It indeed DOES take longer or as long (just to be fair) to edit as it does to type it.
You are so right about buying there
I bought several items this year off Etsy for my Christmas presents, flower pens, individual painted flower cups for the ladies I gave to, have bought soaps there before, lots of stuff. I really like Etsy, some really nice things.
I'm not buying it.
These are just some of the incidents some of my Canadian friends have gone through:
1. My GF's husband decided he was still a teenager and went snowboarding, tore up his knee and had a 6-month wait for an MRI.
2. Same GF her best friend had an abnormal mammo. 3 months to get an ultrasound.
3. Ex boyfriend's ex-wife broke her leg while they were skiing. They kept her on Morphine from Friday until Monday because no orthopedic doc was available to do the surg.
4. Another GF of mine was on a specific type of thyroid medication that was the only one that they found worked for her. Then they decided it was not a covered drug anymore and she could no longer get it in Canada.
5. Another GF's husband needed cardioversion waited over a month to get it, meanwhile he was in horrible shape, legs and ankles swollen.
I'm sorry this is not acceptable patient care. The latest estimate is $1.3 trillion dollars to re-structure our health care the way Obama wants it restructured. Everyone puts Bush down for his "agenda" on Iraq no matter what the consequences. This is "Obama's" agenda. This country does not need another $1.3 trillion debt for future generations to have to try to pay off. JMHO.
I'm sorry, is anybody buying this story? sm
part-time, 16,000 per pay period!!! Come on, I'm not buying this at all.
Buying local ....
Unfortunately, some of us don't live in areas that have a lot of choice. My town is tiny and we have a teensy WalMart that has items that (I really think this!) have been there waiting to be sold since the day it opened years ago! I buy from JC Penney's from a catalog outlet here in town (if they're open) or online, sometimes I shop in one of the larger neighboring cities. Frankly, unless I'm buying cotton or watermelon, it ain't happening here :-).
However, in defense of your statement, when I lived in a larger city and had variety (and choices!) I did shop in town more often than not. I miss those days LOL.
BOS is changed so you have to keep buying the new one--$$$$

Better off buying on Ebay.
I bought this computer and what a mess. I was told that it was bought for her daughter just the previous year and still had the warranty. She was going to transfer the warranty to my name.
I thought that because I used paypal I would be safe, but that is only if you buy off of E-bay. When I received the computer, it was a whole two years older than I was told and there was no longer any warranty. The seller conveniently died a week after I received the computer.
So, if anyone contacts you about this computer, BEWARE.
Just an FYI when buying it from another user

Buying a house sm
I need some advice.
We're in the process of buying a home. When we were searching today for quotes on a homeowners policy, we found out the home had $14,000 in water damage in 2003 and the insurance company (Farm Bureau) wouldn't insure it for us. There was, however, one company who would insure it but for a really high premium.
We were supposed to close on the 25th. I'm considering backing out of the deal because of this. Would I be able to get my earnest money back since the seller didn't reveal in this in their disclosure?
Also, would you pay the higher premium and buy the house because maybe whatever caused the problem is fixed?
By the way, we haven't had the inspection yet. It is to be done on Monday.
Help!!!
No sense is buying anything until you have a job.
Transcribers are rarely used anymore unless you get a local account. C-phones are still used occasionally, but most work is done using a foot pedal. If a company requires a foot pedal to test you can use Express Scribe, which is free, and just use the hot keys. I wouldn't want to use hot keys all the time, but they are fine for testing.
ShortHand is $100. Get to try before buying it, too. nm

buying a laptop
Good morning. I am just today going to buy a laptop and need some advice. There are 2 I am looking at, a Dell and a Toshiba. Any suggestions on which one to go with.
I am planning a trip and do not want to take vacation days since my pay would be so much less by doing that. Anybody that has done this, please give me any and all advice that would be helpful... TIA!!!
buying computers
Do we have the option of buying the computers from Medquist and does anyone know how much they would want? I would just as soon use this one which is customized to my favorite websites instead of buying a new one- don't want to get in trouble for checking my email, doing banking, etc. Do they offer the option to buy the towers from them versus returning them if you quit? I have only been with them for 3 months so my station is a newer build.

Mobile home buying
Shop around for repossessed homes. I have a double-wide Palm Harbor that we picked up for about 60% of book. Yes, they do depreciate like cars, and some brands hold value better than others. Palm Harbor and Patriot seem to have the slowest depreciation rate, and do have pretty good records for storm survival (always remember, they have earned the term Tornado Bait honestly!) Our home was barely lived in, with very little evidence of wear, and a great price. Try to look for a repo-only lot - they are usually run directly by the mortgage company and if you have good credit, a good deal can be made, especially if they have had the home back for a while. They can also show you homes alreay set up in parks, or on lots of 1/2 to 1 acre or even more, and if you like the location, won't even have to wait for moving and set-up. Make sure they are able to demonstrate that the heat and air work properly, even if they are lot-set in a temporary sales lot. Don't know about AZ, but in Texas they do have to have certain warranties for roofs, appliances, etc. for at least 90 days. New home dealerships often have some repos, but they are usually dogs to make you want the new ones. Shop around, take as much time as possible (we stayed in contact with the repo dealer we brought from for about a year, and he called when he got in what he knew we were looking for) and you can find a deal, especially if you have great credit. We are way more happy with the mobile home we bought when we remember how little we gave for it. Stay away from Fleetwood, Shulte and SOUTHERN ENERGY (run-don't walk-away), unless they just give you one, then be prepared for problems anyway. I am running on, aren't I? I just wish someone had steered me this direction in the first place. 21st Century Mortgage Company is a good lender for mobile homes. There are not many companies out there who still do trailers, but you can find them if you look. Hope this helps. Contact me if you want more info.

Buying a software license
Michelle, If you buy a "used" copy of Instant Text, what you are buying is a user license that the seller transfers to you and which means that the seller installs it from her/his computer. Make sure the seller provides you with the original CD, the manual, and the serial number of the licens. To be in compliance with the license agreement, the seller of a "used" copy must notify the software publisher about the license transfer so you, the new user, can get tech support. This may be useful to know whatever you decide to do.

I'm a vegetarian so not buying meat saves,
but also, the more *fixed* food is, the more expensive it is - for example, if I want soup, I buy the ingredients and make it myself, plus it tastes better and isn't loaded with garbage I don't need like salt and fat.
I don't buy extras - candles have been out for a long time - I have a few in case of power failure, but nothing fancy. I don't have a cell phone, or anything other than basic TV. I buy clothes at thrift stores (which is actually a lot of fun), and I never hang out at malls - impulse buying is out.
Get an extra plastic bottle and pour half your shampoo into it, then fill with water. Most people use way too much shampoo, conditioner, etc - dilute w/water - does the same job and lasts way longer.
If you will search around the web with Google, you can come up with hundreds of ways to save money - most of us buy stuff we don't need simply because we are lazy or we think our every desire needs to be gratified.
It's mostly just excess baggage; it is amazing how good it feels to not need *stuff* to feel good.
the potpourri idea is fabulous!!, plus don't forget the wonderful scent of herbs you can grow yourself to mix with the cinnamon, etc.
Good luck and have fun!
Also, if buying an analog TV, get the facts if it will be compatible or not...(nm)

Buying a house on an MT's pay, stupid or daring?
Put a couple hundred down for earnest money today. Not sure if it was the "right" thing to do, but will sure "feel" good if I can pull it off! Any other single moms out there have their own home?
Not MT related, need house buying info..sm
Does anyone know what you can do when your credit score isn't high enough to get 100% financing on a home. I qualify for 80% financing but don't have 36k for a down payment. Frustrating!
in similar situation and am buying her out for the account
I am in a similar situation but have a very strong noncompete clause. I took over the account, and we are negotiating a price for the takeover. She promises she will be fair. I consider the money as paying for a business consultant, as I still can learn a lot from her and borrow her transcriptionists for overflow. This makes everybody happy-the client, the service owner, and helps me. It also keeps my integrity, as I did not "steal the account."
good link for buying books

I've been knitting about a year. Keep buying
yarn, not enough time to knit. I'm trying to learn to crochet too. Doesn't look as nice as knitting usually, but I do lots of charity work and it goes much faster than knitting, easier to fix mistakes too.
try buying one of the home paraffin-bath

Yeah, but think about it - it was much cheaper than buying thousand of MTs...

I'd like to see hard data before buying into that belief
I will blast a poorly performing QA'er all day long. Someone with something of substance to offer in critiquing my work is someone I communicate with and have nothing but respect and praise to give. I won't get into a snit about the use of too many or too few commas, but a QA'er who fills in a blank I sent in for a second ear and fills it with something incorrect IS someone who holds no respect in my eyes. That is the person I'll blast all day.
Darn. I was not quiet. Wonder what this will do to my image on the board?
True, most do, but why spend money buying
one when you don't know if it will work. You can test without a pedal and then some companies will provide one. Every company I have worked for had a proprietary software/foot pedal.
Considering buying a Dell notebook to transcribe. How easy is it?
Meaning, how is the ergonomics? I'm afraid it may cause carpal tunnel or maybe back problems due to positioning. Would like input.
Buying and planting a tree or shrub in their yard,
something that blooms/flowers so that they can seek comfort every year and it is symbolic too.
I bought a Dell because I got a better deal than buying locally.
I got the computer, Windows XP, WordPerfect, other software, a photo printer and a digital camera shipped to my door for $398. However, I worked as a computer technician for several years, so I know I can add components, fix it, or upgrade as needed. I don't like the fact that Dell offshores so many jobs, because they totally forced technical pay rates down, laid off thousands of American workers, and forced computer prices down. However, I figured they'd be losing money on this deal if I just bought their basic system on sale with nothing added. Some guy from India called wanting to sell me an extended warranty and service plan. I told him NO because I can do all of that myself, as well as working any job at their company. I didn't want to buy locally because most of the local computer stores are staffed by idiots. There's a high rate of bankruptcy and computer stores going out of business here, then they won't honor their warranties.
REASON I'M TELLING them I'm buying house tomorrow
To answer post below, BF would love me to rent from him and stay here, but the idea is to get away from him,
I do not love him, he has a violent nature has wrecked things and has a history of wrecking things, is VERY short-tempered,
does not like my 16 y/o-has called her a bi**h-has said she needs to get off her fat a** and do something even though she babysits HIS kids so HE can do stuff, MAKES his supper when I'm working plus goes to school and does her homework.... He has said I should use the brain in my head and realize she needs to exercise and make her exercise more. Oh, and has called me a B**ch too, can't forget that part. Obviously is ALWAYS negative toward her, NEVER anything positive.
He whines and complains constantly. He complains and whines when dinner is not made. He complains over household chores not being done but of course he is unwilling to help because he is busy with work and this and that..and is TIRED! but whines when laundry isn't done etc, including his of course. He whines because he is so tired from work and so sore (he does construction). Doesn't matter that I went to bed a 3am and was up at 9 to take care of kids, etc, etc, have 3 PT jobs, etc etc.
He has a "do as I say but not what I do" motto with everything. He thinks he is the best looking, the best at EVERYTHING, the best in bed....OH Ya, that too. His ego is huge obviously. And of course, he says I could do worse. Oh Ya?
And obviously doesn't respect me. Sits on the couch with dirty clothes, walks on clean floors with dirty shoes, says bottoms aren't dirty, says back of his clothes aren't dirty...constantly does that...even had dirt clumps fall off his shoes and baby would pick them up wanting to eat them...that didn't even stop him. Doesn't pick up after himself, leaves garbage in kitchen with the basket 1 foot away and leaves wrappers...CANT stand that. I have 3 kids to pick up after, I don't need another that is 39 years old.
Okay, nuf' said about why I don't want to rent from BF? And I don't want to hear that it is a man thing and ALL men are like that cause I am sick of that excuse and ALL men AREN'T like that. I was not put on this earth to be a maid to someone who is supposed to love and care for me. Can't and won't do it.
Plus, got an email from supervisor at hospital today, she was wanting to know what hours I can work for fulltime. Looks like it may happen before the 1st of the year. Yeah!
