Absolutely - addictions are hereditary in the sense that it may be a genetic chemical imbalance. Like so many other "diseases" or illnesses, a brain chemical imbalance may be at the root of the problem. Children of alcoholics are more prone to the disease genetically, males more so than females. Females of alcoholics can be food-aholics, obsessed with weight, either thinking about food all the time or trying not to think about food all the time. It's the addictionobsession. In our family, daughters of an alcoholic, half of us are overweight and the other half are obsessed with being thin. We have all been blessed with good looks, intelligence, but have trouble keeping our daily lives in order. The ordinary things that most people take for granted can be a struggle for us like keeping our finances straight, our lives, our priorities. It seems so hard at times. Counseling from time to time and taking one day at a time helps an awful lot when needed. Understanding the struggles and not blaming, but working through and recognizing what is going on is a plus for us. Coming from an alcoholic should never been a crutch for our own shortcomings. Just keep working at it.
