Actually, it started long before the post you're talking about.

'Shroom had nothing nice to say in a number of different threads, mostly because she didn't want to believe what people were telling her about the kind of income they are able to generate by working for themselves. Either way, the word is inappropriate and should not be used. Fighting among each other is non-productive and only makes this site less useful to those who need information, encouragement and a place to turn for advice. The "advice" and name calling that was undertaken by 'Shroom is inappropriate and should be deleted.

Look who's talking. You're telling us what to post.

You evidently think you're perfect by your condescending posts.  Here's why I won't help any more.  There have been others, too.

I posted a message yesterday and NO ONE answered it.  I'm sure I'll get answers to THIS post though.  Thanks a lot for your help (or should I say lack of!)  URGH!

As long as they are talking the whole time sm
I hate it when it is 25 minutes and 15 of those are "umm", and shuffling of papers looking for information , and going back to correct things that they dictated incorrectly.  That is a waste of my time.
I started a new company not long ago, too

and they were detail-oriented.  Like you, my transcription was great, but I kept forgetting the little things - how they like their dates formatted, when to add headings, when to expand abbreviations.  I printed out the emails with the corrections I got and made myself a cheat sheet to keep beside my computer.  I reviewed it before each shift and referred to it frequently while transcribing.

Learning the formatting/account specifics is probably the most difficult part of starting a new job, and I'm sure their QA dept is aware of that.  I made it and so will you.  Just stick with it and double proofread things.  I also doublechecked my demographic information prior to submitting just to be sure.  One thing to remember, when in doubt, flag it for QA.

I know what you're talking about...sm
but I don't know what it is. SD10 and DH have each had one. SD's was pretty bad at the top of her leg. DH wants to pop it, but I don't think he should. I left mine alone. I still have a scar, but it's gone after a month.

Wonder what kind of spider this could be. I'm so paranoid of brown recluse because I've transcribed surgery reports about them!
You just don't know what you're talking about -- well, SM

you know what you are talking about, but we're not talking about the same things. I know a lot of people who make more money than I do. I could make more too, but I'm just too darn lazy. I'd die if I had to work 8 hours. I've been at this job for 6 years.

you have no idea what you're talking about

I guess we're probably talking $8-12 a day.

No you don't know what you're talking about. The point is
no matter what you call it or how you slice it, the only difference in tax payment between an IC and an employee is the 7.5% self employment taxes and also, less the deductible expenses. I don't know who does your taxes but I bet it isn't you because you don't know the first thing about them. It only costs 7.5% more to be IC status. period.
You have no idea what you're talking about (sm)
Depending on the state, you can be evicted in as little as ONE WEEK if you haven't paid rent and your landlord is being hard-nosed.

To the original OP: What state are you in? Have you called your local Legal Aid? Have you looked eviction law up online?
If you're talking about the ESP file...

to temporarily suspend it from expanding hit the Cntrl button twice..the ESP file will pop up...then hit your "P" button, it will put the ESP function on pause..then hit escape and type what you need to without expansions.  Whenever you're ready, repeat the process.  Cntrl-Cntrl.....P....(to release the pause this time)...then just hit escape and go on typing.

Hope this helps...or...sorry if this wasn't what you were asking about lol

Can you be more specific about what you're talking about?
Without information about what peripheral you're talking about, it's hard to answer your question. If you're talking about a foot pedal, you should be able to switch between computers without problem. If you're talking about something that needs to be registered (like an iPod), it's not as easy but not impossible, either.
You're talking about two different things.
I never said it was okay for a company to pay their bill late or not at all. I did say it's not true that a company is responsible for a person's financial situation. There are many factors that result in personal financial hardships--illness and debt to name just two. Good financial planning means that you have enough cushion to handle the bumps in life, including a late paycheck. Sure, paying late is an inexcusable problem, without doubt. Projecting the blame for bad financial planning on the company is not appropriate.
They're talking about working for sm
a company doing VR, not doing VR on their own.  Those are the "editing" jobs you see.
I know what company you're talking about.
Congratulations and welcome aboard!!
I've done what you're talking about
You will need a laptop (of course) and a USB broadband connection card. You can get one of those from pretty much every cell phone provider out there: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, USCellular, etc. Cricket is the only one that offers no-contract service without charging an arm and a leg. Verizon's daily rate is $15/24 hours. Cricket's monthly rate is $40. The rest of the monthly rates are usually around $60 but include a 2-year contract. Unfortunately, Cricket is not available nationwide, just certain metropolitan areas, so it would depend on where you're traveling whether Cricket would work or not for you. Verizon and AT&T cover MOST of the USA, but at higher prices.

Anyway, you can also recharge your laptop through your car's cigarette lighter. You would need an adapter that would cost about $30 from Wal-Mart. Doing it that way requires that you idle your car (or drive around) for however long it takes to fully charge your laptop.

For length of typing time, you might want to buy a 6-cell or 8-cell laptop battery instead of the 4-cell that laptops often come with. That will extend your battery life from 2 hours to perhaps 4-5 hours, depending on your laptop size. Those little netbooks for $350 sometimes come with a 6-cell battery and claim to last 5-6 hours on a single charge. The keyboards on those are tiny though - you'll probably want to hook up a USB keyboard if you go that route.

For the sake of privacy, you WILL want to get some form of USB broadband through a cell phone carrier if you're traveling. Free WiFi just isn't secure enough for HIPAA compliance. When I'm working with my USB card while traveling, I also turn off the wireless signal on my laptop, so that others on whatever wireless network is available do not have the option of trying to view my computer contents. Also, I set my settings as private as I can to prevent sharing of files across networks, but I do that at home too.

If you're going to be typing in front of other people, you'll also want to get a 3M privacy screen for your laptop's screen. That prevents people from viewing your screen from a side angle, and means that if you're in front of your screen then you're the only one who can see its contents.
I just googled a little bit and see what you're talking about...
and I downloaded the zip file myself to see. Are you sure you extracted them to the correct place? I got 2 dll's and 1 ini that, according to the Readme, are supposed to go in the C:Program FilesNCH Swift SoundSCRIBE folder.

I guess if you did all that and it still doesn't work, the next step would be to contact NCH.

http://www.nch.com.au/support/supportcontact.html?software=Scribe&support=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nch.com.au%2Fscribe%2Fsupport.html&pty=6&free=1

It sounds like you may have already been that route, and/or through the forums, though.
Are you talking about the post re sm

You're right on all accounts! I started sm

taping it every day since Cassie died but I haven't watched it in a few days becuase Nick and Phyllis just make me sick.  I don't really see Brad and Victoria together.  They don't seem to click, you know?  I can't stand Colleen so I've just stopped watching it altogether.

Are you sure you're not talking about e-Trans Plus? e-Tranz

e-Tranz does not offer benefits and have no employees, all ICs.

The owner has a habit of not paying the NEW MTs whom she hires just to get back into TAT but then does not to pay them.  I was an MT for that company, and it was an awful and terribly stressful experience, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. When I would email her (at first) and practically plead with her to pay me, she shot back some very sadistic and unprofessional emails, sounding as if she was getting joy from what she was doing.  It was the worst experience I'd ever had with any MTSO.  She blocked my emails, and I couldn't ever reach her by phone.

She ended up paying me eventually after 2 months had passed since that last invoice, but that was only after I informed her via a third party that I would definitely be paying her a visit in person for a little face-to-face, one-on-one "discussion" about our little problem.

Please, please don't ever work there, especially if you live paycheck to paycheck and need that money to survive each month.

They're not talking about format "style"

The AAMT BOS is not a format guide.  It talks about the proper way to transcribe numbers, grades, classifications, how to write out titles, just many, many, many useful tools like that.  It is a way to try to regulate the transcription business to a degree.  Many don't agree with it, but it is one way and at least it is one way that is comprehensive.  If you don't have an AAMT BOS 2nd edition, I highly recommend you purchase one.  Not only will you need it for your job, but you will be surprised at what you will learn just perusing the book.  I had been an MT for 25 years when I "discovered"  the 1st edition.  It taught me that I had been writing a lot of things incorrectly.  At any rate, the BOS 2nd edition is a good addition to any MT library.  Good luck to you.

If you're talking about the one in AZ, that ad has been running for many months. sm
Lots of discussion on another board about it. Seems they keep the ad going regardless of whether they're actually hiring, just to amass a great big pile of applications for when they do have an opening.
I think you're talking about Heather Headley .nm

oh my gosh, I know which company you're talking
about. That is the same one as our hospital. I'll be glad when they get canned! Which will be happening once the contract is up ... hopefully sooner!
I found the keyboard you're talking about...
do you remember about how long it took you to get used to it?  Do you think you're faster on it?  thanks for any info you can provide!
I know which testing place you're talking about, and I won't
test through them either. Most of the bigger nationals go through them now, don't they? The way I feel about it is if I didn't have what it takes to make it in this career field, I wouldn't have lasted this long. Try the smaller MTSOs. The tests are maybe 1-3 little dictation files, the workload is less stressful, and you'll make more money.
You're talking about a separate program add-in.
In the standard MS Word program, there is no such creature as "word count" on the Tools menu. Either you're not useing MS Word or your company added this program. The other poster is telling you how to get the line count using the MS Word statistics/properties for a document.

If your company has added this program feature, they can configure it any way then want to and you're at their mercy.

Please make sure in the future when you say you're working in "Word" that it is MS Word as that is the assumption that will be made by anyone reading your post.
True. So then don't work. We're talking CHOICES here. nm

Don't know what you're complaint you're making with this post. sm

You stated in your original post that you don't want to work weekends or odd shifts. What is your definition of an odd shift?  Second shift?  Third shift?  Sounds like you want to work M-F on days.  Sounds kind of rigid to me.

Personally I like second shift, so everyone working days means more work for me!

No, they're talking about Internet phone calls, not FTP transfers.
The physicians aren't actually calling you over the Internet to dictate. You're downloading sound files and uploading documents.
Well, we're talking about America, NOT globalization. And, this site is all American.

Exactly. If they're so smart, why are they talking about moonlighting at Burger King?
Getting evicted.

Can't be that smart, people!
Her post was deleted and was talking about audio transcription something or other.

If you're talking about MetroScript, I didn't find that they had any extra fees (sm)
They pretty much only charge you for what you use. I only pay $14.99 per month and it works great for me.
What a great post! I have 3 kids and my oldest just started college ...

I miss him like crazy even though he comes home every weekend with his laundry!   He is also a drummer in a band and for some reason, their new drum set is at my house.  But, I realize that soon enough my house will stay clean and the noise (i.e. - drums, guitars, laughing, fighting - not sure I'll miss the fighting!) will quiet, so I try to enjoy it all as much as possible.  (excuse me while I go have a quick cry and then get back to work!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Oh my..I'm afraid my original post started a flame I did not anticipate...sm
I think it just proves there are companies out there that are not worth our time and some that are. I left my email address (in my original post above)and would very much like to hear about companies that are fair, honest, have steady work, treat their employees professionally and yes...do pay a minimum of 10 cents a line. I know they exist and would appreciate input from those of you who know who they are. You can email me privately so as not to start another flaming war! Thanks for your help.
I didn't assume since that post was on there before I started my shift at noon
...........and this post for help was posted only a couple of hours ago. I couldn't imagine leaving a note up for that long.

But, you are right, ya never know. :)
As long as you're doing it just for spending
money & have a husband who is the bread-winner, then you'll do fine. If you're a single mom counting on this to support you and your children, then I'd recommend another field. Now that the greedy corporations have taken us over & are sending most of the work to India, they've pretty much destroyed our industry.
Just saw you post. Sorry it took so long.
I tent mine up as high and as far apart as it will go.  Since hand as in hand shake position, wrist support isn't an issue.  I think the hand shake position is a main factor is preventing wrist problems.  Not having to "force" wrists downward and then move hands about is, I think, the secret.

being paid by the line, but by the hour. (I assume you're currently paid per hour as an inhouse employee, right?) If you can still make your previous inhouse salary, rather than the paltry cents-per-line most at-homes make, you should be sitting pretty.

Double check and be sure the inhouse people have to maintain the same line count as you! There is no reason why at-homes should be 'penalized' with higher line counts than in-house people, especially if you're doing the same work, using the same equipment, etc.

If you're paid per-line, and it's not as much as you'd be making per-hour inhouse, what could happen is that you'll find yourself working longer hours for less money, which isn't fair. It's hard to maintain quality work when you're depressed about what you're making, or about never being able to leave the house!

Depending on your hospital's software, they may be able to clock you in and out. I worked at a place where they could see the time you started a report, and the time you sent it, but that wasn't always accurate if you were halfway through a report and then got up to use the restroom, and then had to wait in line for a stall, etc.

Even if you can't get worker's comp for getting hurt at home (though if you got something like carpal tunnel, you might be able to dispute that!), you would probably still be able to get Disability.

For the most part, it sounds like a deal that would work. You're better off being at at-home employee of an inhouse MT department than you are working for a large national. You probably already have better benefits, too.

And, at some point in the future, if you decide working at home isn't for you, you probably would have the option of going back inhouse without much change in anything, but if you left and worked elsewhere, it would not only be harder to come back if you wanted to, but they'd probably add insult to it all by offering you a lower 'starting' wage.

Good luck, and let us know how it all works out!
You're in the minority pay-wise, but hey, as long
as you're making your money, screw everyone else.
My tricks - sorry long post

I'm not an expert but this has worked for me.

Since I am the primary breadwinner of the household, I made the whole family a part of the budget process.  We have two kids left at home (2 grown and gone) and I still manage to pay them their allowance (10.00 per week each).

How about we start there.   I have a Chore Chart on a dry erase board on the fridge (so they see it every single time they hit the fridge) with the name of the chore written in permanent marker so they can't erase it, then put the initial of the one responsible for that chore that day.   If, at the end of the day, those chores are NOT done?  They get a black X in the box next to the chore.   Only their initials are written in dry erase so I can change that around from time to time.

If they miss doing their chores 2 days out of the week, they get NO allowance.  If they argue or procrastinate, that gets 1 check. If they get 2 checks by the chore, then that is the same as not doing the chore and they don't get the credit for it. Even if they eventually get it done, they still don't get credit that day because they procrastinated OR argued about it.  Pay day is Friday.

Time is money people and I don't have the time to clean as I should, they are old enough, and they want money too.   I don't give money for movies, candy, or trips to the dollar store.  They now have their own and are learning to budget.

Sometimes I give them bonuses too for doing an inventory of the freezer, pantry, organizing the cupboards, etc... Helps us keep track of the things we have for the next step.

MENUS ~ If you get Woman's Day Magazine or First, or anything like them that have the monthly menu calendars in them?  PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THEM.   They can save you BIG $$ on your food bills.

My kids are horribly picky eaters and meal planning has saved me a lot of money.  I now have them sit down with me, look over these meal planning calendars and see if it is something they would like.  If they put it on OUR calendar, they initial it, and we make our grocery list.  If the time comes for a particular meal and they turn their nose up at it, I send them to the calendar to see if they initialed that day.  If they did.... Eat it! PERIOD.  (by the way, I never put anything on the calendar that they don't agree with so, after a few months of doing this, there is never any more turning the nose up at dinner time - HA  fixed their wagon!)

We also do a mass cook and freeze fest now and then.  The kids get into it too.  Very easy for them. THey are 12 and 13 so I have the meal calendar taped to the inside door of the pantry.  When I'm working, they can go look and see what's on the calendar for that day, pull it out of the freezer, and put it in the oven.  I have written the temp and time for each one next to the item on the calendar.  Works out fine.

Power bills... Yikes - LIGHTS OUT.  When I go to bed, every light in the house is OFF except the porch light, the little light above the stove, and the nightlight in the hall across from the kids rooms.

GAS- Holy Smokes.   Up to 2.79/gal here now.   No extra drives to here and there for anything.  If you just want a cold pop to drink cuz it's hot?  Make iced tea instead.  Not worth that kinda money for a wasted trip to the mini mart.  Just plan better the next time.  The kids want to go to the pool or their friend's house... pump up the bike tire kids and grab the walkies.   I make my kids take walkie talkies (Cobra brand 5-mile radius at WalMart for 80.00 and WELL worth it.)

One last little tidbit....  SAVE your receipts for EVERYTHING for at least 2 months then compare them after the end of that 2 months when you have learned to tighten up the wallet a bit and see the difference for yourself.  Makes it really worth your while.

I have cut enough fat out of excess spending in the past year to put away 400.00 or more every month into a savings account that I can use for emergencies, vacations, whatever.

By the way... Would be a good idea to have a forum JUST for Budgeting and Money Saving ideas here wouldn't it.  Administrators????  How about it?
