I used to work for an insurance agency and for the most part liked it and liked who I thought my employer was - it should be noted that this is a man I had known for 30 years and used to baby sit his kids when they were little. Kids also worked in the agency. Anyhoo, the business had been struggling - amazing how that works if you don't actually sell any insurance. One day at the end of August 2007 he sat us all down and said he was merging/selling out to another agency. He was assured of a place as a producer, but the rest of us would have to interview with the new agency and we may or may not have a job. In his exact words "I'm throwing you all under the bus, and I"m sorry for that, but it's time to take care of Larry." Well, all righty then. Over the next weeks it was made very clear to me that I was NOT going to be offered a job at the new agency.
I went back to my desk right after the meeting and immediately started trying to figure out what to do. I knew how to transcribe, having done that for years for an insurance adjuster. I'm a wicked fast typist, too. I really wanted to work from home and I REALLY wanted to never be in a position where I was at the mercy of a 57 year old man having a mid life crisis again. I found an online MT course that day, and for the next month instead of working I studied the course at work and within a month after that got a job.
It's amazing how things work out, though. If dirtbag Larry hadn't done what he had done, I would not have had the flexibility to take care of my mom as she was dying. So, really, it was a blessing. I actually told Mom at one point that I should send him a note: Dear Larry. Thanks for being a pr!ck. Love, Robin.
Mom didn't think that was as funny as I did.

marriage crisis
I appreciate all of your replies on this issue. I was a single mom before I even started seeing my husband, so I know first hand the hardships and the sacrifices that come with that role. I will contact a marriage counselor to try and salvage this. I am not leaving just yet as I will have to save up some money and get my pay up a bit before I can leave (if this happens).
I know this will, in some way, affect my daughter, but I think it would be better leaving now than staying for another 10 for her sake and being miserable. I can guarantee that if we do split, she will be of the utmost importance. Just because we have split, does not mean we cannot get along and be there for her.
As for the husband knowing how I feel? He knows because I brought it up before, about us separating for a while and he said to give him the papers and he will sign them, which told me he could really care less if I left. Then he made the remark about the grass is not always greener on the other side (meaning finding another man to make me happy). I told him finding another man was not my goal, I just wasn't happy with him.
My main issue is we do things alone so often (he with his friends, me with the kids) that losing his family makes me more sad than losing him. Isn't that pathetic? I LOVE my in-laws.
I am going to stop babbling now. I just want to say thank you to all of you for your advice and frankness concerning this issue. It really did help me.
Tape crisis solved-so far
I manually wound the tape up, holding it taught with one hand while winding with the other. It only took an hour. So far, so good. Thanks for the responses. If it ends up getting mangled again, you will all hear me scream wherever you are:)

I was about 10. Lots of my friends' parents had build bomb-shelters in their backyards. We didn't have one, but my parents naiively believed that if we were attacked, that we (all 7 of us!) could survive by living in the center hallway of our house. (Guess they didn't see the movies they showed us at school of buildings being vaporized...) I remember thinking I'd rather be a crispy-critter from the A-bomb, than have to live for several weeks or months with my entire family in a hallway! So I was kind've glad we didn't have a bomb-shelter.
So the Big Plan for the family was if we were bombed, I was supposed to walk home from school (getting a nice healthy dose of radiation?), and then we'd all live in our hallway. MY plan, however, was to NOT go home, but instead to just run off and hide in the orange grove nearby, since I figured we were all gonna die anyway, and that way I didn't have to do it with my parents bugging me.... ;D
But having grown up with several-times-weekly 'drop-drills' (getting under our desk was supposed to protect us?) and the constant threat of annihilation, I think ever since then I've had a hard time thinking very far in the future. When I was then I figured I'd never see 15. Was surprised when I made it. 20 was a REAL surprise... how could humanity possibly have survived for 10 long years? And 30, and 40, and so on. Never thought I'd even be an adult, let alone a middle-aged one! So things like going to college (Why? Seemed like a waste of time and money if we were all gonna be wiped out in a few years, anyway), retirement savings, or even a good job, just never made sense to me. So my purpose in life became one of having as much FUN as I could possibly have, 'cause ya just never knew.
Talk about fatalistic... every day when my best friend & I walked to school, when we each parted for our respective classrooms, she'd say, 'If we don't get blow up today, do you wanna play after school?' 'Sure', I'd answer.
Anyway, nowadays when that possibility rears its head as places like Korea, India, Iraq, etc. develop nuclear capabilities, at least I've gotten used to the idea of pretty much living one day at a time.
Breakdown -- America's Health Insurance Crisis
is a special on ABC tonight. Being that we work in the health care field, I wonder what they will say is the cause. It would be interesting to watch and see what they attribute as the cause and the solution.

How they are lying to get them
They are claiming that the reason they want these normals is to benefit our fellow MTs, where that is not the case at all. They are too lazy to make up normals, so they want ours to ship overseas for those people to use. Can you believes the level these people are going.

I talked to a recruiter once who told me she could do 700 lines an hour (no, that's not a typo) of straight typing (expanders only, no templates). That's right, girls. 700 lph.
Talk about feeling small! 700 lines an hour???? My best is 400 & I'm not doing that now because I'm not doing ops so it's much more straight typing, very little "template-able" text.
I posted about it at the time & everyone seemed to agree this was not do-able. So I don't know. Anyway, when I heard that I was ready to throw in the towel.

Bringing home 1840 BEFRE taxes and being able to pay mortage or rent on your "nice 2300 sq foot home w/land" utilities, insurance, and food is not possible. So either you are not having to pay for a mortgage or rent or you have supplemental income. There is no where in this country one can live on their own for 11.50 hour

Why would you suspect the above poster is lying? I have 2 transcription jobs; Employee $.095 line with benefits and IC $.10 per line. These jobs are out there. Yes, I have seen the $.06 per line jobs too and I always send the MTSO an email stating they should be ashamed of themselves. I have yet to get a reply.

It matters very much if they are "using" you and cherry picking to others. Trust a thief before you trust a liar. Either it is your account exclusively or they have to own up that they are getting cheap, not frugal, CHEAP! Not to mention sneaky liars that they are. At the time it goes to court, they will say they gave it to you and you "lost" it or you made that horrible mistake that made the patient sicker or killed them. I don't share my toys, that way they don't get dirty unless it's my own dirt.
Its the MQ way. I have my way of letting them know I know they are lying. I hate being BS around.

No one accused you of lying. This is not the first time
in the past few weeks where you have gotten comments to search the archieves of the company boards. While I sympathize with you, it surely isn't our fault that you don't have work. Post your resume on the job boards, answer all the ads on the job boards that you think you can handle the shift, the equipment, etc.
With just about every company there are pros and cons, some people love it, some hate it, some just couldn't cut it and bad mouth the company and there seem to be no other posts to support claims. This is the reason you need to read previous posts, to get the info and decide for yourself. Only one person may post about the company you are asking for and it may be favorable, but that is only view point and may not be enough information or the type of information you were looking for.

He was warned about 9/11, failing levees in New Orleans BEFORE Katrina, AND crumbling infrastructure like the BRIDGE in MN.
In fact, he CUT FUNDING FOR THE LEVEES in New Orleans THREE YEARS RUNNING before Katrina.
Please do your homework before you defend *any* administration. Don't rely on PAID radio or TV personalities to tell you what YOU need to know in order to protect YOUR country from bad administrations. They have an agenda and trust me PROPERLY informing you is not part of that agenda.

I am NOT lying! It's the truth. I've received solicits from at least 8 people overseas.
I make sure the job is not my life and that it does not take over my life. sm
I have been at this 25 years, even once had my own accounts and worked 24/7 with cat naps to keep going but no real sleep. I really burned myself out. Now I work a regular 40-hour week, but it is not my life. It is a means of making money so I can go live my life. I work for a company that is not all about production. They want us to take our time and do it right. I am doing that, and it feels so good to be able to work at my craft and be allowed to do a good job while I am at work.
But after I get off, I have my family and I take time to have fun and enjoy life. I think that is the key to not staying burned out. You need down time, time to have fun, exercise, relax, etc.
Exercise is very important, too. It rejuvenates the hormone system so you have more positive hormones flowing through your body and helps get rid of stress.
That's what I do.

She was actually running the company, a new franchise in a big city, and between her other duties, she typed. She would be there at 4 a.m., sometimes 3, and leave at about 9 p.m. every night. That is a sickness. The best part is she didn't need the money - seriously - she didn't even need to work. They were very well off, and her husband had a great job. She finally had a heart attack, but that was after years of those hours; believe it or not, she didn't even go into the hospital for her heart attack - the doctor said it was "mild" so she came to work half days for about a week, cause the place couldn't run without her. Now THAT is sick.

if you worked in an office. I have always let several people know when I am going to be away, just to make sure I'm covered.

I am sorry to hear this, but I have worked in-house and encountered the same type of boss. I left and did not look back and that same boss is there and things have gotten worse under her administration. My ex-coworker has been transcribing for nearly 20 years and is one of her best employees, but yet she treats her like a dog -- go figure.

Sounds like she is trying to get you to quit - I went through this with one boss - an MTSO - who was really losing all of her accounts and did not want anyone to be able to collect unemployment. She tried everything, changing people's accounts, denying them bonuses, taking away work and queuing it to other people, you name it - she did it. Thicken up your skin if you like your job, but don't expect her to change. I'm sorry that you have to go through this, as it makes for a stressful work environment -of course at some point that might be able to be changed to a "hostile work environment" at which time you need to go to EEOC. Come to think of it, I would give them a call anyway and report her.

I think it might be a boss
Upon further research I think it might be a carpal boss or bone spur because it is very hard and painful, unlike a cyst. I'm going to see my rheumatologist in a couple of weeks and ask him. I have a bad feeling that it might need to come out because my hand is getting stiff. But as long as i can type I'll hang in there.

Notify your boss
Depending on the company you work for, you might get results. It's very frustrating when you see something that needs changed but are powerless. When working for Edix, I had a patient that had the exact same condition my son has and there was a new treatment that had saved his life, yet her doctor did not know about it and she was at the point of being near death and only in her 20s. I emailed my supervisor and asked them to please notify the doctor of the information I sent and they said nope, no way, against the law. That was nearly 3 years ago and still bothers me wondering how the patient turned out.
Do any of you consider QA/editing to be your boss?
I understand that they critique our work, etc., but I never really considered them to be our "boss". I already have one supervisor, now it looks like I have a few more.

You gotta be r-e-a-l careful when you're talk state laws. The boss might consider him "problematic." I mean, how much money are we talking about in terms of travel from the boss to the client? If he's getting, say, $10/hour and it's a 15-minute drive ... For $2.50, I would just let it slide.
I'm an IC and work exclusively for one company, which makes me a statutory employee by IRS law. However, I'm making a high line rate, so I'm more than willing to leave things as they are and pay 100% of my social security tax.
This is one of those "silence is golden" situations.
Boss asking for normals
Is anybody working for a company where your boss is asking you to share your NORMALS. Be very careful. My company is asking us to share your normals and come to find out who they want us to share with, overseas. Also asking questions like, who are the best dictators, etc. Also experiencing block of work just disappearing. Several hours just gone. Anybody else.
I wonder if you have the same boss lady as me...
She is terrible. She constantly acuses me of things I am not doing and then when I call her on it, I never hear any more about it. Never an apology. I have tried to speak with her on the phone but she won't and it's always by e-mail which is so frustrating. I have been slammed so many times I can't even count any more. I just never know from day to day whether I'll have a job or not because I never know what I will be accused of next. Oh the things we put up with to make a living in this business

Apparently your boss is not looking at
the work flow. Next time you are asked, tell your boss that if you could pick and choose you would be doing more work too. The boss needs to handle this, if he/she won't, there is not much you can do.

Don't worry about opening up a can of worms - it needs to be open. You need to be honest with your boss when she questions you to cover your tail! I wouldn't worry about the other person - she's made her own bed and now she should lie in it.

to pay, I'd turn him in to the labor board and then I'd quit but just like MT world there will always be someone willing to work for free thus nothing ever changes with making employers do the right thing.
