A little hard and time consuming to figure out

Posted By: Patti on 2008-01-23
In Reply to: how do I convert lph to wpm? - ThankfulMT

If you do 300 lines per hour of 65 characters with spaces, no bolds, no caps, etc.then that would be at an average of ten words per line, 12 courier font - 1 inch margins, and so that would be 3000 words per hour divided by 60 which is only 50 words per minute.  Your speed on transcription is different than regular typing as you have to account for stopping, listening, correcting, etc.  For reqular typing speed I would double what your transcription speed is.   I would tell them what my average transcribed line count is and tell them to figure out how that turns into words per minute.

I think it's more time consuming to
I prefer to edit/QA what an MT has typed any day. In my opinion, VR is can be the pits for the most part. Every now and then, I'll get a VR report with just a few errors, but most of the time, there are tons.

I have seen some posts where people claim to get 600 lph doing VR editing. I'm not one of those people. I am paid 3.5 cpl for VR editing and make about $9/hr doing it.
Yes they are very time consuming.
They have to be done and nobody likes them. What would you suggest?
Do you find it time consuming
preparing everything?  I need to get back on it and the only showstopper is time.  The last time I was on it (obviously didn't stick to it) I lost 25 pounds but found preparing the meals and snacks was time consuming.  Please Email me.  Thanks.
IT is bulky, time consuming, sm
I hated it when I used it with MD-IT, but then MD-IT Louisville division was awful too.
Sounds time consuming, actually
I suppose it could be productive if someone really dedicated themselves to learning a word for every key on their keyboard but I don't see how it could actually work...seeing as how there are more words in the english language than there are letters on the keyboard.

Sounds like something a court reporter might do but even then they have to use a stenograph to do that with, you can't just do it with a regular keyboard.
how hard is it to figure out what you want to buy?
I wouldn't ever lease. It's throwing money away without building equity.
Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
I've been trying to figure that one out for some time now.
I changed companies, bought an expander, even tried Dragon Naturally Speaking. I give up.
Figure it's time for a update on my daughter - sm
She has 2 chemo sessions left, it's been pushed back twice due to low blood counts.  So far we have not needed any more blood transfusions (has had 2 already) but her ANC has gotten dangerously low 2 x now (her immunosuppression was in the toilet basically).  The main problem we are having now is having her maintain her weight (getting her to eat good), she is only a 1/2 pound over what she was when she was discharged 04/02/05, now at 38.5.  She is average height for a 5-y/o, looks so skinny and bony now though, pale too. Still had a good covering of hair, about 40%, until this last week, now the rest is coming out in dribs and drabs...has about 10-15% of her hair left.  New hair is already growing in, baby fuzz, like what a newborn gets, blond now though, no more red. Guess I will find out in 4-6 months what it will be. She had good weeks and bad weeks.  Chemo weeks are worse of course, she is nauseous and tired for about 3 days, then gets hyperactive a bit here and there, that is real fun (sarcasm here), drives you totally nuts, pretty impossible to work in the circumstances.  I am working a little but not as much as I would have been otherwise, some days more than others, just depends.  Pretty much back to working late at night and early morning so I have the day basically free since I have weekly trips to the hospital and whatever else that happens to be going on. This week alone she has 3 appts, but necessary to make sure the cancer has not spread. But the last week has been a good one, the two prior were not.  So I try to enjoy the good ones as much as I can with them. I'm just happy she has an older sister to play with, helps a lot. We did get some great news 2 weeks ago that Make-A-Wish is going to grant Jenny a wish, now we are just getting it set up etc. We are half-way through the process now.  My husband and I are totally thrilled with the generosity of this organization.  I sat at the doctor's crying I was so overwhelmed by it.  My FIL of course had to the fly in the ointment, he didn't think they would do it since she was not terminal......it apparently has to be life-threatening....well, she'd die in 5 years w/o the chemo, is that life-threatening enough? So I had the great pleasure of calling him today and said the "offical" interview was in the next couple of weeks to finalize the wish, the details, etc. It is really amazing what they do.  So if anyone out their donates to MAW, I want to thank you as you are making it possible for my little girl to have a wonderful wish....I will get into details when it is "official", as she has to give 2 wishes in case the first one does not pan out (she already has 2 things decided, very clear-minded for a 5-y/o). So that is where it stands for now.  Hopefully we will stay on track the rest of the Summer.......
Take the time slowly to go thru some jobs and figure out
s
Any 62 year old should know by this time how to figure things out
I am older but I do not have to ask others how to get around money out of my husband's money to cover my expenses. Give me a f…ing break! All the time I have read these posts have never seen 1 person trying to be so underhanded. They are not glad to be able to make around $900- they were trying to do something against a company, IRS and anyone else she could. After all that time she comes back to rant some more and call us vipers. I am independent. Last year I sold property for $150,000. I did not pay all my independent taxes like I should but.... I had major expenses such as new computer, property upkeep on the one sold plus those taxes, my property taxes where I live and I made arrangements last year (hey, I was thinking ahead) and set up at least $46,000 in the bank JUST IN CASE I needed for the taxes this year. With all my expenses paid out, did my taxes and got back a little over $600. I did not retire, I did not flame others for what I should do, I used my head before time, not just running out and spending all and had a cushion in case I needed. I am woman, I am strong, I use my head for what it was intended. This is the way things should work, not retiring first, not having enough money, not trying to be sneaky about working and having others taking the credit and pay then paying me under the table, then trying to pull the wool over other's eyes!
sorry you are having such a hard time...
but I honestly do not know what you mean. may I ask who are you talking about.

at some point, people have to stand up for themselves, that is, in my opinion, what
"this country is based upon." thank heavens some people felt they were worth more than just working for the government, and left to start a new life here.

if you are upset about the postings regarding MT profession disintegrating, then I disagree with you.

we do perform a very important service, one that helps our 'fellow man' every single day, in the over-50 reports we probably transcribe each and every day while people wait to have surgeries or need emergency care.

we are typing those reports to create a legal document with our names attached to them as well.

this is not "pissing and moaning" but active dialogue with the hopes something good can come out of it. sorry you feel that way, and I am sincerely sorry you are being touched by those problems because of a natural disaster...
I have a hard time understanding if this was so
wrong then why wouldn't anyone not even your own husband be on your side?  I don't know about this one.  Something doesn't sound right.  JMO.
I'm having a hard time understanding why you
That doesn't make sense to me.  Just because you transcribe a report, that doesn't make you the only person who knows about it or even a significant person in the whole process.
I have a hard time believing your overhead
I think you should consider selling your clients to an American-based company and go back to MT'ing.  It doesn't sound like you can handle the pressure of being a business owner.  I am an IC that makes 10 cpl and my MTSO owner does not mind at all that she is only making 3 cpl off of my 10 cpl, but she does not have to QA my work or do really much of anything, and she's clearing 3 cpl on my 10.  Now, if you have complaining MT's, then you need to be more strict about TAT and QA.  They should not require you to QA once they've become familiar with the dictations.  Also, you need to find a way to also provide 24-hour turnaround.  The problem here is that you are only willing to pay 7-8 cpl.  I'm still baffled as to the cost of your overhead?  Most physicians supply paper, their own dictation equipment.  FTP sites do not cost that much.  Lot of eyebrown raising ???'s here, that I don't think you are being forthcoming.  JMO.  Good luck!
The hard time was the past thing.
Hi, I have just joined Spheris Hyderabad. Two months for settling down is what they give you and after that it is your regular type-type-type. There are nooooooooo problems with this new Spheris Clarity (R) platform. With this, things are just moving smooooooooothly.
It's hard so that you'll fail the first time and
Tell your employer that the money you give to AAMT/ADHI for the 'privilege' of taking their test is funding the progressive offshoring of the American MT profession. If you've been an MT for nearly 30 years, you don't need a CMT after your name. You were a professional MT long before that bunch of con artists dreamed up that scheme to make themselves rich by making MTs think they were on their side. Now we all know better. Don't fund their offshoring scam!
I must say, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time
The above "Frank" conversation is a classic..  You guys have made my year with this one. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo FUNNY!  You two are in the wrong line of business.  Thanks for making my day.  I laughed 'til my stomach hurt.
I loved my account with Spheris, but had a hard time
punching in and out.  I worked originally for Healthscribe and then they merged with Spheris.  Things didn't change for quite a while and then all of a sudden things took a crappy turn for the worse.  I ended up with at least 5 accounts that I was in daily.  I went from having to punch in and out and being required to work full time hours to stay a full time employee even though I could get my work done in part time hours.  I didn't stick around and after 2 years with Healthscribe I left shortly after the merge was starting to take shape.  Like I said, the biggest problem was punching in and out.  Good luck.
I had a really hard time with a pastor who preached on marriage
when I knew this was not his first marriage. I couldn't stand it. All the things he said applies to us, but what about his first wife? Where does she fit in? Too confusing for me.
Waste of time and hard-earned money
when you can only make may be 1 cpl more if you are a CMT.  They should not charge you, they should just let you take the test and send you the certificate.
Wonder if you scrub them too hard. I wear my soft ones for 2 years at a time! nm

I disagree, first off, I have a heck of a hard time hiring qualified US MTs
client ready work.  Then, when I do hire MTs I constantly run into the problem of how they only want to work part time or can only work 2 hrs on this day, an hour here, or an hour there, or the next problem is consistency.  Out of the blue, oops, can't work today, or I lost connection to the Internet yet they're too stupid to go offline instant messenger.  One MT owes me money because I was nice enough to help her out (yeah I know my fault) and she screwed me over.  Such drama.  It's a CONSTANT battle to find good US MTs.
Goes both ways. I have a hard time with tenses when speaking Spanish. :)
s
ROTFLMAO. STOP!!! I haven't laughed this hard for a long time.
Can you imagine 10,000 MQMTs just wanting to show Frank a personal touch?  He will be one tired guy.
I spent about a month in India and they do speak English but sometimes I had a hard time
understanding the way they pronounced the words so I would ask them to spell it.
I meant bought. Hard to type and listen to the music at the same time.
:
I would not; most of the time those type files, although not usually hard medical terms, take lots l
to type and are very difficult as it is hard to hear with background noise, different speakers, usually no macros, etc. I think they are worth more pay, not less. I also get paid by the word at 0.008 and had figured mine to be about 0.09/line as well in the past. stick with where you are.
If it rains hard, the wind blows hard and there are trees
nearby, it snows heavily it will mess up the signal.  The speed is not constant, sometimes as slow as dial-up, but at least still connected.  Many companies will not allow satellite.
So, you think it is okay for hard-working MTs to earn 7-8 cpl for their hard work?? nm
:{
this is how I figure it

I took the work I did from Sept 1-15.

With spaces ... 16,492 lines x 0.095 = $1,566.74
Without spaces ... 13,967 lines x 0.095 = $1,326.87

Divide the high lines into the low dollar:
$1,326.87 / 16,492 = $0.084553

To answer your question ... just over 8 cpl.

I figure it this way
My word processor is Works, which only counts characters. I then manually counted the spaces and found that apx 22% of the report was spaces. Take your 9.5 cpl and subtract 22% and you come up with the equivalent of 7.4 CPL. I work for MQ and, as far as I can tell, DO get paid for spaces because their line count is always about 22% more than my 'Works' count.
you and me both! I figure by then sm
there will be some kind of "robot" like thing I can program to do all that massaging, IV fluids and Foley for me. That along with putting on my support hose, hearing aid, denture cream, getting my pills, etc!
One way to figure this out is to

"switch places".  Pretend he's working at home, and you come home at the end of the day.  The important thing is - he's there and you're there.  You share a home and probably lots of other wonderful stuff.  It's hard, but sometimes you have to give a little even if you don't think it's fair.  I don't mean - be a doormat- just act out of love.  It seems like when you do that, it comes back to you.

Anyway, good luck and Happy Holidays to you and hubby.

me again... duh... trying to figure out SM

why after each of my exapansions the curser immediately goes to the line below after I expand. (instead of stopping like autocorrect would) so I could insert the next word.

I just noticed the little yelllow box that comes up that will prompt you to see the word you are about to expand.  I kinda like this!!!

How do you figure

How do you figure you can do this from home when testimony is taking place in the court room; depositions are taking place in a lawyer's office across town; and 8:45s take place each morning at the speed of lightening in a court room.

Please!

When you figure out .....
what you are going to do - let me know. I have even considered going back to school for a year to learn coding. They are the ones making the money that we used to make.
Go figure. nm
s
Figure it out
MT = 8-9 cpl   QA = 3-4 cpl  Overhead = 2-3 cpl  Benefits = 1-2 cpl  Mgmt = 3-5 cpl sp probably 20 cpl minimum
It took me a while to figure that out too.
:-) I love the easy fix problems.
When you figure it out..

Let me know how.

I've been doing this for years and it is very hard to keep focused.  The phone is always ringing, my brain is thinking about the pile of dishes in the sink...

Even now I should be working and I'm posting here.

Maybe we can help each other figure it out? (sm)
We could both do research and tell each other what we find out?
Maybe they figure...
An interesting experiment might be to submit a resume & say you have 2 years' experience.
Still trying to figure out...
what  "documentation by exception"  means.
She needs to figure out what her
account, factoring in all expenses, and then add in her profit margin, factoring in her wage, benefit costs, etc. If she does not, and just tries to charge what the "going rate" is, she may well end up losing money on the account.
thanks. I will try and figure that out!

when I can't figure out the patient name (sm)

I just leave it blank because, like the other post said, I cannot get any feedback on what is protocol, so I make up my own.  I aint gettin' paid enough to fool around trying to figure out what the dumb doc is saying!

Wow, I think I have PMS or something..I don't usually gripe this much!

You can figure approximately a 4:1
transcription to dictation ratio on average.  There are many factors, as you know, typing speed, terminology, number of speakers, quality of dictation, etc.  I read somewhere that 10 minutes of dictation averages approximately 100 lines.  Again, it depends on the above factors.
I can't figure out what is causing this, but since DQS
my line count has never been the same -- some of which is due to being switched from account to account, which will slow ANY/ALL MT's down, but it is MORE THAN THAT ! DQS is hungry for MQ MT's lines somehow. We will never know, as we do not configure it ourselves, but it is done by others who will not reveal any such information. I just know from MedRite to DQS has not been a good experience for me as far as lines go. The software itself is okay -- not that at all, but where my lines are going is my struggle with DQS !!!
NOPE, can't figure it out.
