A couple of ISP questions/Meditech.

Not sure which to go with.  Currently, due to location, have dial-up.  Considered netzero which I guess is still technically dial-up.  I would like to have something that I can travel with, which leaves netzero or satellite.

Will be beginning work with Meditech based program, working directly on company's website.  I'm concered about dail-up being slow with Meditech, but have heard that satellite does not work well with Meditech either.  Any opinions on what to go with or anyone working currently with Meditech on satellite basis?

   SO CONFUSED!           TIA

Meditech questions and Cerner questions. Any input is appreciated. SM

I just recently went back to work in the office at a local hospital. We type in both Meditech and Cerner, depending on what you are typing, i.e. Medical Records reports versus Radiology.  We are currently typing blindly in Meditech, meaning we do not have access to our line counts and must depend on management to give us our totals.  In Cerner, we are able to run a line count report and print out a hard copy of our line counts at the end of the day.

We are finding that 800 lines in Cerner equals about 500 lines in Meditech.  We are not paid per line nor do we have an incentive plan, but we have a new HIM Director who would like to institute an incentive plan and the administrator over our department has laid down the law and decreed that all transcriptionists not making minimum in the department will be written up.  Problem is according to Meditech line totals that we have been given, that would be about half the department.

The transcription supervisor has taken our concerns to the new director who told the MT Supervisor to hold off on writing people and has taken home all the line counts from the last month and she is going over them with a fine tooth comb this weekend.

I am not a very trusting soul by nature, so I am doing a little research on my own.  I've been in this business for about 15 years.  I started out in a hospital and have worked for a few services at home and am now back in the hospital setting.  So I know a few things about line count and I consider myself to be pretty well informed on trends and technology in the industry.   I would like to walk into our next department meeting armed with as much knowledge as possible.  So I have come up with some questions that I would like some fellow MTs to answer, give opinions, and maybe even direct me to websites or individuals who could give me a better understanding of Meditech and Cerner.  Here are my questions:

  1. Is it possible for an MT to have access to her line count in Meditech or is strictly a management function?  Any MTs that work in Meditech on this board, do you currently have access to your line counts and if so, how do you check them?  Is it an option on the main menu after you log into Meditech?

  2. How is a line defined in Meditech?  (i.e. 65 cpl, with spaces, without spaces)

  3. How is a line defined in Cerner?

  4. What abbreviation Expanders work with both Meditech and Cerner?

  5. Examples of incentive plans (if anyone would like to share that with me that would be great, if not I completely understand).

  6. Measuring productivity by minutes of dictation versus typed lines.

    1. What would be the minimum minutes required for an 8-hour day?

    2. How would one structure an incentive program based on minutes?

I was thinking of presenting the idea that we keep track of productivity using minutes instead of lines since there is such a discrepancy in Meditech.  I also worry that if an incentive plan is put into place and we are still typing blind into Meditech, what's to keep management from shaving off a few lines here and there?

Feel free to email me or post here any responses.  Either is fine.  I really appreciate any input, comments, or just plain old supportive posts would be nice too!

A couple questions to ones that have their own business…

First, do you carry error and omissions insurance or a clause in your contract?  Second, when you do your billing--do you find it easier to bill twice monthly (1st and 15th) or once monthly?

A couple of Shorthand questions, please.

How do I quickly modify an entry?  (I've been pulling up shorthand, putting in the short form, clicking on Dictionary, then modify, then cut and paste....there has to be an easier way).

How do put yo (for year-old) directy behind the age without putting a space (i.e., 32yo instead of 32 yo).

How do I stop SH from working when I'm in my e-mail or on the Internet for a brief time, but don't want to completely close out the program?

The ShortHand directions I have are very unclearly written, so I'm grateful for any help to these and upcoming Shorthand questions!

Couple questions for Frustrated
I was just wondering if you have had training or experience working as a medical Transcriptionist before this job. I know you said you had a degree in business, but you didn't say anything about working as a transcriptionist before. If this is the case (no experience), I would say the company you work for was having a hard time finding a qualified person to fill the position. Therefore, promises made that they couldn't or wouldn't keep.

Anyway, good luck in trying to get your hours rearranged. I know how difficult it is to work with children at home. Luckily mine are in school now.
I have a couple of questions about a resume.

I saw a resume where the MT put that she had experience with " ESL (English second language) " and one that was all fancy saying "uncommon ability to understand diverse accents and dialects "

and also - if you have done QA, what do you call it? -just QA or quality assurance.

Meditech platform questions...sm
I just found out I will be working in Meditech for radiology.  I have never worked on this platform but I haven't heard too many good things about it.  Could you all let me know the ins and outs of Meditech?  Can you make good line counts on it?  Should I not bother wasting my time?  Do you like it or do you hate it.  Any info appreciated.  TIA
Questions about Meditech platform...
I read through the archives and no one seems to have a high opinion of the Meditech platform for transcription. Is it still as slow and non-user friendly as it seems to have been in the past?

Thanks.
can any answer a couple if Winscribe questions?(sm)

I'm a fairly new MT and have done all my MT-ing so far with C-phones.  I am being switched to a Winscribe system.  My question is this:  Will the MTSO be able to monitor how fast or slow I'm transcribing?  I'm not trying to get away with anything.  It's just that I've read horror stories from some MTs on certain platforms where the MTSO can see (and calls) whenever they're "off the system" (bathroom breaks, looking up a word, legitimate coffee-breaks) etc.  I work as an IC and have a window in which to get my work done rather than a set number of hours.  What I'm wondering is if the MTSO, with this new system, will now be able to "see" if I'm not typing every single minute.  TIA

Working on my tax return and have a couple of questions, I'm hoping

First, A company I worked for briefly at the beginning of 2008 sent me two different W2.  One lists all the pertinent boxes (wages, federal taxes paid, etc).  However, in box 15 where your state and local taxes are listed, they have the wrong state.  It is a state I used to live, but haven't lived there for the past three years.  I definitely did not live there at all in 2008.  The second W2 they sent list nothing in any of the boxes except box 15 where it lists the correct state, income, and taxes I paid.

So does this mean I paid taxes in a state that I didn't even live in?  And if that is the case, do I have to file a return in that state?  Or do I contact the company and ask they correct my W2?

I am using TurboTax to prepare my return.  My second question is I have a 1099 from IC work I did in 2008 and after I enter the information, the software asks me for a business ID code on attachment form C for my "self-employment business."  I have no idea what to put on this line.  I looked at a list of the codes on the IRS website and there is nothing that is specific to medical transcription.  There is a code for Data entry and then under legal there is a code for document preparation and stenotype.  Those are the only two codes that even come close.

So which one do I use?

Oh, and have I mentioned, I HATE TAX SEASON!

I have 2 middle age couple friends. One couple became pregnant from condom failure.
This is not just "irresponsible" behavior! Both couples are "fixed" now, because for them, reliable birth control was NOT. But it's an error to assume this stuff happens to people who are unmarried or irresponsible. Both these couples are raising 2nd families, now, but it wasn't "irresponsibility" that did them in!
i take a couple but i too wonder if it's
the mind over matter thing working. i take flax oil capsules for my skin and i can definitely tell a difference if i stop taking it. grape seed plus (antioxidant), i can't tell one way or the other if it works. my neurosurgeon suggested glucosamine for the aches of joint surgery and the grape seed extract because he thought it was pretty good. i stopped the glucosamine because after 2 months i didn't feel any different.
i have been buying the least expensive or whatever is on sale so that might have a lot to do with the results. i would love to find a great energy source!!!
I use a couple..
I have two of the Olay Regenerist products. I like them. I especially like the thermal skin polisher, calls itself a "mini-peel treatment".
Also I have a couple of ESL
who spell things wrong all the time so I can't usually go by them spelling something. After they spell it and it come up when I do the spell check, I always end up having to look up the work anyway.
Yes, I do have a couple of ...
... jobs in mind and plan to put in applications for them tomorrow.  I'm single and I have been out of work in the last 2 years for 9-10 months; also have gone through my meager savings--that's gone.  I do want to work.  But as I've worked for several companies in the past (other than MT) and paid taxes for over 30 years, I feel I've earned some unemployment compensation.  Thanks for your input--
There are a couple out there.
I can't remember the name of the company but one of the owners was Tari. I think they were getting eScription work from Focus but weren't actually Focus.
here's a couple

Just a couple
For one thing, with the ESL dictators, as you may have guessed the more you type the better you get. When you're new, and especially when your testing and not under production pressure, you might be better off listening to it all the way through once or twice. The cadence and the way sentences are formed, and their syllable accents, etc. will become more clear, especially as you hear them in phrases that you can catch. Then it will be easier to go through and say things like, "Oh, yeah, this guy's E's sound like A's and he says GULLBLUTTER instead of GALLBLADDER.

It gets easier in time, to the point where now I can type with a Hindi accent without thinking about it(and even learned a few cuss words to toss at the doc at appropriate intervals). Most of the companies that I have tested for have maybe had 1 out of 4 or 5 test dictations that were ESL. I would assume that if you did swimmingly on the English speakers and even just fair on the ESL, they would give you a chance, but then again I'm just a worker bee and not very corporate at all!

Meditech

Has anyone ever used a word Expander with Meditech? I understand that there are several different versions of this program and we use it for Radiology. We have V. 3.25.  I was specifically thinking about ShortKeys?  Any input would be appreciated.

Meditech
Has anyone ever used Meditech?  Is it user-friendly?  Fast?  Thanks for any info you can give me.
MediTech
No to all of the above questions.
Meditech

Hello ladies.  Can any of you give me referral for the name of a good medical transcription service company to work for?  I've been with Spheris for almost 3 years and am looking.  I've been requesting to change from an intimidating and threatening supervisor for months, and it hasn't happened.  MANY PEOPLE are leaving Spheris.  I'm just wondering -- can anyone give me the name of a NICE COMPANY to work for??

Thank you very much.  Have a nice day.

Meditech
User-friendly? LOL. Shorthand helps.
Meditech?!))!!**
I hate it!  Been working through Meditech. A huge hospital account and it's constantly going slow, booting you offline. And, it's been like this for years. They are losing a load of MT's because of it. It's okay for the hospital users, labs, docs, etc. NOT for transcriptionists. You need a dedicated line, not a system that serves a metropolis!
Does anyone use Meditech here?

I work for a hospital and I am forced to use Meditech.  There is nothing to help a Transcriptionist except for autocorrect.  The F11 key is diabled as well as macros.  Any one else experience this problem, and how did you get around it.

Going crazy without my tools.  I can't stand not being able to F11 to my next stop, let alone make templates, etc.  Autocorrect on this computer is terrible as well.  It will only take words in a line, not a paragraph, for example.  Sheesh..  Any advice???

Meditech
Yes - Have your supervisor get Smartype, which works well with Meditech in Word program or Abbreviate, which is cheaper. I have worked at a local hospital with same problem and they would not put Smartype on, would do nothing to help at all. Good luck, hope you get somewhere, it is like typing with one hand behind your back isn't it? Pain in the neck and takes so much of your time.
meditech
Meditech does not count lines.  It only counts black characters, no spaces.
Meditech
I would charge by the line - at least 12-14 cents per line (if you are the owner of the account)or charge 3.00 per report - 4.00 for specials. I have found with Meditech that this is about the only way to make any money. I had an account like this and found that radiology by the line if there are a lot of specials is the way to go - longer reports - more lines, especially if they use a lot of normals or negatives as some call them. hope this helps - you are probably being way underpaid if you are working on Meditech.
Meditech - What's it like to use?

Companies that have it always seem to want people who are already trained on it.  Is it hard to learn if you have learned many different softwares?

Meditech
I have used the oldest version of Meditech, without a spellchecker and the newest versions with Word and not in Word. Even when I used the older version, I made excellent money. You can use ShortHand and with the old version, I used abbreviate. Of course when I used the old version for 8 years, made 10 cents per line and even the newer versions made 10 cents a line in radiology for all. The Cerner will slow it down, but not all the time. It is an old system, but you can make good money using Meditech. I use RadNet now which I love. Meditech is fairly easy to learn and your line count you get out of your main menu for Transcription Statistics, but not until the next day, that is the only bad thing about it. Good luck. It is not the worse platform. I have used 3 different Meditech programs, two of them old and one the newer one.
New Meditech is not like it used to be
Yes, you do need broadband access and internet.  So, good thing u've got DSL.  The new version is a whole lot better than the dial-up version - very user friendly.  Congrats on the new job!
meditech
I have a manual here but no fax machine - is there something in particular I can look up for you?

Meditech
I've used Meditech and it is a very simple, user friendly program. Only problem I had with it was that there were no expansions.
Meditech lag
I also found Meditech to cause a huge problem with lag and it drove me crazy.  The Meditech in Word is better.  Have you updated your internet explorer to the new version 7?  If so, that may be the problem as I heard it does not work well with some of the medical software for companies, so I have not upgraded mine.  There is a web site www.worldstart.com, and they have a message board there, lots of people on the boards and maybe someone can answer your question about the lag time and what may cause it.  I stopped using Norton antivirus and have used AVG free as the Norton missed 200 viruses on my computer a couple of years ago.  What I used to do years ago is transcribe in Abbreviate and cut and paste into Meditech and that was faster.  Maybe you do need to uninstall your program and reinstall, that may help.  Good luck.  I know how frustrating this is.
meditech
Can you use ShortHand with Meditech? I know Meditech has canned text but it's kind of cumbersome and I really like Shorthand. Does anyone use Meditech + a word expander?
Meditech
Believe me it is slow and add hospital woes to the dragging and you have more problems.  I have been on more than one Meditech acct, some good, some not.  I have said this before.  The Meditech people that came up with this need to go back to the drawing board and...........fast.  It is getting to be pathetic!
Meditech...where to get it?sm

Does anyone know of a website that you can go to and download the Meditech program?  There was a site I went to before, but I cant find it now and need to download Meditech.  Thanx for any help.

T

I'm on Meditech.
I find it pretty slow and cumbersome, even on a broadband connection.

I've resorted to composing in Word on my local machine and then Cut and Pasting into Meditech.

I don't know what version of Meditech it is, or if there even IS more than one.
Meditech (sm)
I remember someone giving instructions on formatting in Meditech, something to do with the F8 key.  Could you please post that information again, I meant to print those instructions out.  Thanks.
MediTech
MediTech is a platform that is used by various hospitals for doing their dictation. It is one of the older platforms out there, but you cannot download it.
I'm currently using Meditech
And the previous poster (pastMeditecher) is right. I also work in Word and paste it in. I've lost too much work when the system glitches!

Another thing. Find an Expander that will work with Meditech (I use Instant Text). That way, if you have other work or change jobs, your expansions are with YOU, and not stuck with the system.
Meditech
anybody know details about Meditech's line counting?
Meditech

When I worked in Meditech, we were told that we were getting paid by the 65-character line even though the Meditech line was 75 characters long.  I used to paste my reports into Word and do a character count and divide by 65, it never worked out.  After many tests, I realized that we were getting paid by the gross line.  Try counting it that way and see if it matches when you get your line counts.  (On that job, the gross lines paid better as it turned out).

Also, other "tests" I did revealed that the originator of the report was the only who got credit.  Any additions I ever made to someone else's report did not add to my line count.  That part stunk.

Hope this helps!

Meditech & VPN
Depending on what hospital.  I don't think it matters what version of Meditech.  Most hospitals are hooking up Meditech through their VPN site.  I did work for one company where they had some MTs going through both at the same time.  I have been going through a VPN site since the first of the  year and love it.  I obtain dictation through the same server.  I just recently was able to go on vacation and check on how things were going while I was away (personal account).  I feel if my rural hospital is going to this system, it will not be long before most all hospital will.
The only Meditech I ever used (sm)

could only be accessed via a dial-up modem...and I have high-speed so I was kinda tweeked about paying for high-speed connection yet still having to use that archaic system.  Maybe it's different now, I dunno.  Thankfully I was able to drop that work like a hot potato due to my connection constantly dumping and losing all my work and I don't have to think about it any more.  God I hated that Meditech.  I've read about people having access to different versions of it though and having much better luck than I did.

Good luck with it though.

Meditech

When I worked on Meditech, you could not change the original transcriptionist.  If I added or corrected something in a report, I physically typed my initials and date at bottom of report.  There is an option to "delete report" to just start over if that option has been given to you.

Anyone use MediTech (sm)

for radiology transcription?  Am considering applying for a position using it but do not know a thing about it.  I am currently using Word-based programs and before that have used WP5.1.

Does it have a built in spellchecker?  Can I use my ShortCut for Windows word Expander program?

Is it cumbersome, hard to learn, take a long time to get *up to speed*???

Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

MediTech

Have used Meditech for 8 years.  I tried IT with Workstation 4 (NUE) and it worked.

Spellchecker is not accurate for more than 1 letter off and it does not know if word should be capped or not.  It will not pick up 2 letter word errors such as NO, fo, si, etc.  There is no grammer check.

Headers are put in automatically (if facility has it set that way), put in Rad's name, pt. name, chose x-ray from list, type date and body.  F7 to beginning of report, Shift+F1 for Spellcheck, proof, F12 to file.  F10 deletes your line from cursor location on.  Need to be at beginning of line and use F3 to join lines or it will move the text to whereever the cursor is located throughout the rest of the document, major PITA!

There are other screens for mammo codes, report codes (normal, negative, see report, unremarkable, etc.) but may vary in setup from facility to facility.

Good luck!

RE: Meditech
Is there anyone that is using Meditech on Windows Vista? I got into it, but it minimizes everytime I get in. It won't open up when I maximize it.
