in 2007. Shouldn't I be receiving a 1099 form from them for tax purposes? I haven't yet and am wondering if I should contact them. I paid my quarterlies. I thought the law was they had until 1/31 to send it.

Any company that sends you a Form 1099 has also
reported that income to the IRS, so it will have to be claimed by you. BUT, they only HAVE to issue a 1099 if they paid you more than $600. However, the first company you worked for might issue a 1099 anyway because they would want to deduct that 'labor' as an expense on their side. If you don't receive one from them by the end of the first week of Feb, I would call or email to find out if they are going to send one. Also, since this is your first experience as an IC, I would consult an accountant. There are so many more 'business' deductions that you can take to help eliminate some of that income. I am self-employed and my husband is self-employed and I am "in love" with my accountant. He works wonders!

Ex-ZyloMed IC wondering if there are others out there that still have not received their 1099 form in the mail. Wondering if mine got lost in the shuffle somewhere. 
what gives on 1099-MISC form?
The MTSO I worked with last year as an IC says they just got their 1099-MISC forms and are in the "process" of mailing them out. I checked on the web and it "seems" that the government has extended the time to mail them out to 02/15...anyone else know of this? I can't do my taxes until I receive that blasted form. GRRRRRR!!!!!
You only have to report earnings over $300 on a 1099 form.
Most people don't want to mess with it, so they don't report it. I don't think it's right. I know of people who are selling things on Ebay, parting out cars or doing construction for income, but they still collect unemployment, social security disability, foodstamps, utility payments, and welfare. It's not fair. Those of us who work hard and follow the law do with less while other people cheat the system and live high on the hog. Their kids have designer clothes, $50+ shoes and the latest electronics.

I do believe that a parent spanking their child is okay, but not a daycare provider and definitely not a baby! I was shocked that they asked me to sign a release allowing them to spank my 9-month-old son. I didn't even swat my son's behind or back of his hand until he was about 18 months old...there was no way in heck I was going to allow someone who didn't love him to do it.
Two 1099 for one company for 2008?
I just received a second 1099 from Lee Perfect Transcription from last year, who I quit for partial non-payment. They are for two different amounts. The second one is $50 over what I made for the year. The second one was under what I made. The two together obviously are WAY OFF. I called and they gave me an email address to write to, which I have not heard back. Did anyone else have this? Thanks.

than that $$ would be on my 1099 for 2009 not 2008?? I have to invoices that were due to be paid in 2008 but I never received the $$ until January of 2009. Do I have to claim that money on my taxes this year or next??? Thanks in advance for your help.

threw the MT/QA under the bus and let the hospital call the shots. In my opinion that is very wrong. We are responsible for the reports yes - but the client should not be dictating who specifically does their work. It makes the MTSO look weak when the client has that much control. I argued and won my case but I was stung and quit pretty soon after that. I didn't want to work for someone who threw me under the bus and yet never listened to my suggestions/complaints about dictators, etc. Fair is fair - and I just did not feel it was fair. You work for the MTSO - not the client. Sure, the client is always right - we need to do it their way - but the MTSO is there as a buffer and needs to protect the MT/QA people
When transcribing "command" or "imperative" form, use verb form or "follow up"
For a long time I would become confused by "discharge instructions" type followup/follow up usage ...
Yes, the patient was to follow up with his doctor ... but was also to make a follow up appointment ...
In my experience, certainly your QA may vary and/or be inconsistent all-on-its-own ... but most of these truncated forms, fit into what I was taught was called "imperative case" and follow up is being used as a VERB ...

it takes a lifetime ++ to know it all. The medical field is far too vast for anyone to ever know it all. One can be in this business for 25 to 30 years and still not know it all. I do believe, however, that a successful MT will do what he/she does best. I know a lady who has been doing op notes for 30+ years, and she is very successful; but when it comes to the off-the-beaten path of op notes, she would have to stop and do some research. I also have a relative who has been in the business since 1965, doing a wide variety of clinic notes, and you couldn't out clinic her, no way!!! She has recently gotten into procedure notes - does them like a charm!
On another note, these 2 ladies have done the good, the bad, and the ugly, but they have had enough sense and experience to stay away from those places that dish up nothing but the ugly and ugliest. We all know they're out there, and there is no living to be made on that stuff!

I do agree, though, it's not "that" big of an accomplishment in the everyday world. Kind of like CMT...  , although I would use that in something like a cover letter for a resume.

my income drastically tanked from late March through Sept. (I made about $300 a month in that time period), plus I have never worked FT for them (i.e. 90 minutes a day). I am now doing about 75 minutes a day though + an account of my own on the side now, so doing about $2K a month now. So I expect this year to be a bit higher in the income level. Only 1 person works FT for them as far as I know, most people are PT, its all IC so it really does not matter. But there is always work left over every day that wasn't farmed out to somebody to do.....and they are getting new doctors every day which is great I think.

At first, no one would even respond. A few months ago I decided to take ANYTHING from anyone who actually did respond.
I'm used to getting paid 10 cents a line for the past 12 years, but when I did get a bite from a company, I took it, even at 7 cents and 8 cents because at that point I was STARVING and worried about making my house payments and paying my utility bills!
Now do you know what the problem is? All three frickin companies have very little to NO WORK available. This is consistent.
Now, at 7 and 8 cents a line and barely squeezing out any work between three DIFFERENT companies (even though they KNOW I am available to do any and all work they have), I am just about as bad off as I was before finding these jobs.
I know nothing else and have no college education, BUT I do know my job backwards and forwards, research skills, terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology and everything else that goes with being a good, experienced MT.
Do you think I am getting paid for this experience? No. Times are bad right now, but they've been bad for me for many, many months. I just don't know what I'm going to do anymore. I rue the day I went to school for this godawful so-called profession.
Every day wake up, raring to go, hopeful there will be SOME kind of work available, at least to make $80 or $100 a day, AT LEAST.
But every day I end up stressing out, worrying, continuously being broken down because even though I'm a hard worker and a darn good MT, I am treated like low-class scum by my creditors because all my bills are late & I can't pick up the phone anymore due to bill collectors on my back. Believe me, I paid all my bills on time every time when the work was abundant and I WANT to pay my bills, but good intentions don't pay the bills. Neither does little to no work at a lame 7 or 8 cents a line.
I also have little food in the fridge or pantry, and things are beginning to be shut off left and right.
I don't know...
It's just extremely frustrating and stressful. I can't live like this anymore but have no way out.

if you need a separate expander, then I recommend Shorthand. I think their cost is reasonable, and it is user friendly. I've used it for years, and it has worked in numerous different platforms, or if not directly compatible, I could convert my list either way fairly easily. It, too, has a free demo period for 30 days. Aside from Word's own autotext/correct function which is limited in its compatibility to a degree, you aren't going to find a good free one.
Work some holidays - don't really mind during the winter months, but
when summer rolls around, I am at the beach on the holidays and do not work them. As an IC, we get nothing extra as far as $$ just the extra work.
Can't complain - have plenty of work all of the time.
You don't want to work for this company. Call your current company and
tell them that you have decided against the new position and tell them that you would like to stay. It is cheaper for them to let you stay than to train someone new. A company who could be so tacky as the one you just spoke of is one you do not want to work for. You can rescind your resignation. If you are a good MT, they will be glad you did.
All I know is it caused the company I work for to be unable to do all work due today and the rest

i used to work for a company that divided the work types up and i loved it. sm
there were only 4 of us working a major teaching hospital. someone was assigned surgery, different assigned discharges, different admits, etc. we all had the backup work type in case the original assignee wasn't available and were cross trained. it made us much more efficient, ability to get used to dictators, set macros, and in the long run we were all much happier.
The company I work for said cable phone wouldn't work, just FYI.

I don't work for MQ but that happened to me once at the company where I work and
my next two paychecks were shorted out of what they had overpaid me for that pay period. I hope they don't take it out of your hide. It was hard to budget for that month!

I work as an IC, work when I want, but I still let the company know if I am going to be unavailable
for any length of time, even though I don't have to.

You can buy them at Staples or Office Depot. They might come with Turbo Tax also -- not 100% sure. But I just bought them. You need her social security number.

I have been trying to get in touch with someone that I worked for last year who still owes me a little bit of money and a 1099 form. I've emailed her 7 times, (none of which have been bounced back so she must be getting them), left 1 voice message, and sent 1 fax. She won't pick up the phone and she won't answer my email. By law I have to report this income, but what to do w/o the 1099? Thanks very much.

Are you 100% 1099 tax forms are suppose to be postmarked by midnight 01/31st? I did telephone Alltax tax service and was informed 1099 has until 02-15, although my "employer" stated to me prior to telephoning Alltax that the deadline is 02/28? I looked on internet to find my answer to no avail.

Yes, I realize it is simply a statement of my earnings, and in my case it is one I need in order to file my taxes to receive money back...no tax preparer is willing to file my taxes without it.
Not sure how you can get out of getting a 1099
or why you would even want to.... that is just a report of income from them to you - for legal reasons they have to comply as do you - how will they report monies paid to you if you are incorporated? Possibly you want to look at yourself really as a company - such as a painting company - and not look at what you receive as income at all - just money coming in on individual jobs? Then I have no idea how this is done - obviously can be done but have no idea how.

Thanks for responses. Read a few posts up that if income was under such an amount they may/do not send one. I fit in that category. It wasn’t much and they kept half because I did not give a two week notice. I will ask my tax guy about it.

When work is low at my company I have
volunteered several times to just work half a day, or take the day off so that another MT who needs the lines more than I do can have the opportunity to at least get in a full day of work.
I don't often have a day where I can't get all my lines in though and there are usually lots of days where I could type 24/7. My work is assigned to me and I have no idea what any MTs workload may be on any given day. Most of the time I work extra if the workload warrants it, but there are days too that work may be slow at the beginning of my shift and I'm just not able to work more later in the day to make up the lines. I'm not complaing about not getting work, but I also don't believe that I need to fit my life and family around my work on a regular basis. I believe that when an MT is hired FT and the company has expectations of how many lines a day they want the MT to produce, then it is reasonable for the MT to expect work. I know the business is feast or famine, but if an MT who if FT and wants to work is consistently not getting enough work during their scheduled shift then there is a problem.
I'm very good at what I do, but I work to live, not live to work, and I don't remember signing anything that said I agreed that my life/family came second to MTing.

The little scale at the top of the page actually calculates total lines, but we do it separately I believe because of keeping track of what each MT does on the log. I keep the log up and type it in as I go and don't fool with writing it down.

Can someone please tell me someone you work and are happy. I have 8 years' experience in multi-specialty clinic and acute care (except op notes) and want somewhere with good pay and steady work. I'm tired of bouncing from company to company after they lose your account and don't have enough work to keep you busy. HELP! I am so frustrated with this field. When things are going good, I can do 2000 lines a day and be happy, but then every 6 months or so things go bad with that company and its a few months of transition after things fall apart. I'm about to lose my mind. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Your story sounds very much like mine. I would be digging out all the garbage docs every day on my secondary while my primary had plenty of work. I was also made to feel *special* because not every MT can do the harder accounts. I want to start pretending that I can only do the easy docs and let someone else do the harder ones. I leave my office pretty frustrated and wiped out at the end of my day now doing nearly all the really tough accounts. How is this fair? Either pay them less if they cannot do them or pay me more!
Anyone work as an IC for more than 1 company?
I'm wondering how this would work out. I am an IC for a company, but don't have enough work in my specialty. I'm not as productive, obviously, when doing a different specialty and am losing money when picking up the left-over work.
Are there others out there who do specialty work as an IC for 2 or more companies? Of even do work for a company and also pick up your own accounts that are not through a company? How has it worked out for you? Do MTSOs usually dislike this or are they generally okay with it. I just don't see myself being able to make a living if I have to keep switching gears when there are no jobs for my specialty.
