1 main and 1 backup. You can't get good speed going with too many accounts. Scratch that crap! nm

Use main pattern, secondary backup patterns when first SM
isn't enough, and then deviate by choosing the "intuitive" choice for an abbreviation that pops into my brain, on the assumption that it'll be the one that pops in when I need the expansion. Usually it is.
I've always had the drop-down list turned off on my ShortHand program, so I can't speak to working that way. A lot of people clearly like it a lot.
However, when editing rather than transcribing, I question how well one can read ahead for corrections to pop down to and scan the dropdown list too. Fast-reading ahead and even making corrections while listening to the squeaky speeded-up dictation as it trails is how to make good money editing. One needs expansions a lot less when editing, of course, but they're still extremely handy. So if you choose to keep developing a system to work directly from as much as possible, rather than coming to depend on scanning a list, I think it should pay off nicely over the long term.
OTOH, since editing does need a lot fewer expansions overall, an Editor would come to memorize all the usual ones anyway and only have to stop and look at the list now and then, never in some documents, often in others. I'm not tempted to change my routine, tho.
If I had other accounts or something as a backup, sm
I would tell them that I am a business owner and send out invoices. If they have a question with an invoice, they need to contact me before making any adjustments that aren't agreed to by both parties.
If they're already doing things like this, you can probably expect them to "fire" you for actually demanding to be treated like an IC.
I wouldn't tolerate this on a continued basis, that's for sure. If I were really angry, I would keep a log of these things and find a way to let the IRS know.
If they don't show any sign of changing (and I'd be really surprised if they do based on your post), then I'd definitely be looking for something else. That's just unacceptable and illegal.
You should have backup accounts. Things are not slow
xx
I think poster mean have backup accounts with other companies.
backup, backup, backup!! Always, make this a habit even with your auto corrects. (sm)

Good for you. There is no reason any hard working MT should put up with that crap. nm
:)
Sound is usually good. Separate line is better if you don't want to tie up your main phone all
s
If good it would take me 3 hours, anything else 4-6 (not a speed demon)

Not all accounts are good accounts. One
That should not be the case. Sounds like you need new accountant with strong knowledge of IC deduction. We save a several thousand on what we pay in taxes based on what I can deduct as at home IC, $2000 off the top for what I pay my child to help with office chores, as an example. The measly 7.xx% I pay that an employer would pay is well worth my independence in being my own boss.
Hi, Marie. Mine aren't that good for speed, either. SM
Lots of ESL and disorganized dictators, and so on, plus work flow is sometimes uneven, requiring one to be flexible enough to come back and finish a shift later. But the work is available and the pay's quite good for the many who are earning the upper levels of the incentive scale. Of course, being hired in at a higher skill level for a higher base pay helps too, and a nice extra is the raise offered anyone who passes the CMT exam.
I make everything from scratch
From the pizza crust to the pizza sauce. The only thing I buy to make the pizza is a cheap block of cheese and grate it myself. I can make two 16" cheese pizzas for less than five bucks.
I make cookies, brownies, fudge, coffee cake, etc., for the sweet tooth people in the bunch.
The ingredients cost at first, but they last a lot longer than a package of Oreos or having Dominos deliver.
Sure it takes time, but you can put a timer in your office and get up and stretch (like we should. . .yeah right) and then go check on your brownies.
Took me a while, but I pretty much have it down to a science right now and I save a good bit of change doing that for hungry teens.
what size package do you have? i have basic and i couldn't make good lines due to speed. nm

Uh-oh! I hope it's not a Scratch-N-Sniff! LOL!

Did you go to school, or are they training you from scratch?
The only scenario I can see is if you didn't go to school. These days, seems like nobody trains from scratch, but if they did, they'd probably pay a rate like that.
Where did all the good accounts go?
To India.
Actually, it is retranscribing from scratch, because the software is so crappy. Same work, sm
less money.
LOL, and the good accounts are all taken by favorites (sm)
but they are always looking for experienced MTs for the bad accounts.
Good accounts are given to their buddies,
the ones who can do the hard accounts will never be allowed on anything but a harder account. And, of course, the ones on the easier accounts get raises and praises because they can get so much work done. Then there are those MTSO who give their buddies the accounts that use a lot of normals or work types that produce a much higher line rate.
It is much more prevalent in smaller companies that the really big ones, or in those companies that started small and knew their MTs personally.
Good accounts are going overseas
How ironic!
Good way to keep her accounts. SOMEONE has to read this stuff over
EVERYONE makes mistakes.
Bad. Good pay, but bad accounts and rude people
stay away IMO
Good accounts and plenty of work. sm
PT line count is 6000 per pay period; FT is 12000.
I have trained 2 people from scratch, no medical background, no school, nothing and they started ave

Does anyone have any good, realistic advice for working on 60 different accounts!?...(exaggeration)
but I am really getting frustrated. I left a company who bumped me off my ERs (which I did for over a year and were my 'bread-and-butter', and the more I complained or asked about it, the worst dictation I got, etc. This was a change of management in which that company went down-hill fast, anyway, as far as the treatment of MTs.
so I left, and now at the 'new' company I am still doing 5, 6 accounts. Forget ERs, I am told.
the question is, I am working on so many accounts, and even accounts with different management, different QA. I am embarrassed to mention I just did a report using the SPECS FROM THE WRONG ACCOUNT. Luckily, I had sent the report to QA, but I get a note from the QA like 'read the specs' (stupid) is how it sounded. Yeah, I did, but for the wrong account.
these companies do not see how making people work on so many accounts is going to be huge negative for them in the long-run. they risk mistakes like this, not me.
how does one keep it all straight, and why do we have to? the only people who are having success, are people who will take any kind of abuse, it seems, and are just making the best of it. does that mean only the aggressive will survive in this business? this gets more ridiculous all the time.
not to mention, pay and money - LIVELIHOOD - severely diminishes the second week of pay-week. anyone else notice that? first week I am flying on the primary, second week in I am like getting scraps, working on 4, 5,6 accounts - there goes all I worked for in the first week.
so these ladies typing 300+ lines/hour and making $50 thou a year, like so many boast on here, how, where, when ???? I am not getting it, and I am a 99-100% quality MT, working 35 hours/week. every company I have worked with, my paycheck is totally dependent on the manager, period.
accounts. Pay own taxes & insurance, charge to cover it all & to pay yourself a good salary.
nm
increase speed 3, decrease speed 2...sm
increase backspace 9, decrease backspace 8. At least that's what mine does.
How about zillions of accounts. MQ has these accounts so overloaded even the new hires dont have any
work. I would love to read some of these reports and then they expect perfect QA and no blanks. Did they lose their minds completely.
C-phone speed help! PLEASE! Speed key!
I am in tears - typing speedy gonzalez - a total knee replacement, not a standard, dictated in under 1 minute - FULL REPORT! Can you imagine? I have a C-phone that is just hanging in there, but lost all its programming. Isn't there a # key on the number part of the phone that reduces speed? I need it way slooooooooooow!! I'm afraid to just start hitting numbers, though, cause I've lost reports that way!! Anybody have a # to hit for me???
crap
I agree.
Why do the MTSOs not DARE to tell the crappy dictators that their dictations are crap? Some doctors do not maintain their equipment functioning properly, then the sound quality is aweful.
MTSOs are afraid to lose the client if they complain about this.
And the MTs have to suffer through this all.
backup
if we all don't demand that we get a description of how they came up with this they're going to think that we're okay with this - I AM NOT!! We should not accept at face value what MQ does because they have never been up front with anyone. Have you ever noticed when you have a concern how they somehow either don't answer or talk around it so much that you just say f___ it and give up because you're so tired of sending emails and/or calling here and there to try to get a decent answer, which we all know by now MQ doesn't have a decent bone in their whole organization, especially upper management!!
I have tried asking to be taken off a backup
account which I absolutely despise, but to no avail, and I think that is part of why I feel like I do. I have a good supervisor, but on this point we obviously do not see eye to eye. thanks for the input though.
ESP backup
Go to C: then DocNet then Bin and find the ESP with your name, for example abc124567 and copy from there. Hope this helps.
as a backup.....
You need to find the program folder on your computer, the folder should be called ShortHand for Windows. It may be in the c:/Programs files. If you can't find it there, go to your START menu, click on the Search for files or folders and see where it is. Inside the Shorthand for Windows folder is another folder named SH8 or whatever version you are running (mine is version 8). That is the program as well as the dictionaries you have created. To back it up, you need to copy that entire folder to a CD or external drive, or where ever you want to put it. REMEMBER, copying this folder WILL NOT create an install disk, this is only a backup of the program with and dictionaries. To install shortand onto another computer, you have to go to the website and download and install the 30-day trial - but make sure you download the correct version for your license or it will not unlock your program, i.e. mine is SH8 and my license will not unlock version 9 or 10. If you have downloaded the correct version, then you copy the files with the extension of *.SPF (your dictionary files) and the file for your license, which should be SH__.LIC.
Hope this helps.
So you get a backup, like I have
I have several people I can call to fill in for me for vacations, etc. If it is just a day or so, I just catch it up when I return. If you don't know anyone who can back you up, then you advertise in the local paper or here, etc. There is always a Transcriptionist around who would not mind a few extra dollars for vacations, etc. That is the way it has been done for years. I don't see it as a problem at all. I certainly would not NOT take any time off!
Do you have the backup CD that came with
your computer? That is the only way I know how to do what you want to. Your computer should've come with a backup CD that has that registration number on it.
Usually just one with a backup or two..
I like having a backup when things are slow.
Yes, that me.....have way to much crap happening....
x
THANK YOU!! As QA I run into the same crap. Like they do not care...
The whole verbatum thing..they go a LITTLE far. There is still room to make it correct.
yes my spelling has gone to crap sorry
so much for proof reading.. I am sure to be bashed for that
What a load of crap!!!!....nm
nm
crap money
New transcriptionists are not given the opportunities that are available to experienced transcriptionists. Even though it is crap money it is the only way we can get our foot in the door to gain the experience we need to even be considered for higher paying positions. I, personally suffer with low pain just to gain EXPERIENCE.
offshore crap
P
HOLY CRAP!!!! Here's what I'd do:
1. Get a hotel room.
2. CALL ANIMAL CONTROL!!!!
Crap. Try actually reading what she said.
I agree with her. I was not a good, fast, MT but I am a killer at research and I can find stuff it seems like nobody else can. I share it with the MT's I proof and my QA peers in the company and everybody benefits.
It's not a question of being better than, worse than or whatever. People are reading stuff into posts that isn't there, IMO.
NOW THAT IS HORSE CRAP
I am sorry, as long as I have done this and am in the business, I seriously doubt with 99% accuracy that someone can do 1200 lines or even 600 without some serious help from "giving" lines. Do not let anyone fool you out there that is just starting out or even have been around awhile. Unless you see proof on how it is done, see it with your own eyes, try it out yourself, do not believe the outrageous. There is also a way I have seen MT's make lots of lines that one cannot see unless they are being QA'd, it is called "padding' and yes I am sure someone then can do 1200 lines an hour, but how much is actually dictation. Padding is a good way to get fired from a company if caught.
Sick of QA crap
At this company I work at, I get so sick and tired of QA. I am sure that there are a lot of wonderful QA people out there and I commend you. But it seems like where I work at, the QA do not follow all the same rules and change what they want with your reports. I get feedback about once a month and I was just looking at my feedback and I am so irritated. They changed things on my report that if you look in the account specifics it is the total opposite. I am doing it right and they are changing it wrong but b/c they make a mark on my report it looks like I am the one at fault. Like we are supposed to place all numbers in arabic form and dates also, but QA went and changed on my report numbers 1-10 to written form and also spelled out the dates and it specifically states not to in specifics. Or like with fractions, it is supposed to be 18-1/2 (a dash in there) but QA changed to 18 1/2 (no dash). And they also change little nitpicky things, for ex. how they think headers should be, they change words around, add commas in stupid places. And what one QA person will mark as wrong, another QA will mark as right. Where do they get these people? I emailed the supervisor for clarification, but I have done this times before and nothing has changed. I really like this company other than the QA. The QA just act like they have all this power and they can change what they want to. It is total bull.
Try Crap Cleaner
Google for it and download (should be from Hippo). Run it - let it analyze and run cleaner. Then go to "tools" and "fix issues." After that reboot your computer and then try to get the gid file again. Hopefully this will clean out anything you've got blocking it.
Maybe their work is crap, too..
...but cheaper crap. Maybe as long as hospitals and MTSOs figure they are going to get schlock work anyway, they would prefer it to be cheaper offshore work, and go through the many layers of QA and proofing?
Insurance companies are one thing, but I have to wonder what happens when a report with serious medical errors ends up in court as part of a megabucks malpractice suit. I mean if the doc dictates something like "50 mg of potassium" which the MT does not question, or some other horrible boo-boo that QA or the doc never catches. We are at the bottom of the pyramid, with QA and the doctor himself also responsible for catching mistakes before he signs. Anybody know of any histories of this?
I think things started going downhill when impersonal MTSOs took over the transcription business, then started buying and trading us like cattle. We truly don't know our coworkers or bosses. We're all just faceless typing machines out here. I don't know about any of you, but I did not get a raise the last five years I was with one MTSO, only 1 raise during the entire 10 years, and certainly no praise for a job well done - ever.
Yeah, I know, we still all should do our best all the time. But motivation is sometimes lacking when you feel depersonalized and as though at any moment your company will be sold, your job sent overseas, or you will be turned into a VR Editor against your will. Maybe some MTs are all about just typing as fast as possible while it lasts.
Did the MTSOs start this by going overseas for cheap, causing us to say 'what the heck' and become low quality? Or did we start this by being low quality, causing the MTSOs to go overseas since they were going to get bad work anyway? Opinions?
I think that crap is inflated!!!!
I don't see an MT making that much unless they are getting about 9-12 cents a line and then I believe it. I make 6 cpl and have been since I started 3 years ago. That same Yahoo thing tells me my husband who is a plumber should be making $60,000, but that dosen't happen.... not with this economy anyway!!!
The accounts are old and she keeps her accounts TRUSTING she hired the right MTs
who if in doubt will ask questions regarding reports. No one can find all mistakes in all reports and that is human to have a report with perhaps a typo. You think anyone reads through all the reports of a national company before they get to the hospital? Not a chance. Some random QA is supposed to correct all mistakes? Not hardly. Doctors/dictators make mistakes too. We all do. So do QA people. So the thing is this person hires good people who are trustworthy, the hospital likes the way she does their account and life goes on quite nicely w/o hovering editors/QA people. BTW, who QAs the QA people on your accounts. Ever wonder?
