the one I used previously was

www.onesuite.com (cost was 2.5 to 2.9 cpm). That was close to $250/month for a 35-hour week.

I later switched over the AT&T CallVantage, which allows me to call long distance through my DSL line. The cost is $35.00 per month.

I posted previously on this...
Unfortunately, probably for every good QA person, there are  maybe twice as many who are sadistic against other women.  Also, sometimes, in my opinion, they try way too hard to impress their bosses, or whoever they are trying to impress, than to really to help and educate MTs.  If that were not the case, you would not have all the major inconsistency, where one day they want it 'this way' and the next QA on the next day wants it 'that way' haha.  Ever had that happen?  Then when you question, you are treated worse than any man would treat you...

If a company hires an MT who is so terribly bad and lacking in skills, that is quite sadistic to then turn around and whine and complain of how bad they all are.  Perhaps QA should be involved in the hiring process as well.

Sounds like martyr syndrome a little bit, too, like 'we all just have it so bad from you horrible, awful MTs, we have to fix all your nasty work.'

Right, it is all about the QA and the supervisors, right?  Not at all about the MT who is expected to produce twice as much, for 1/2 the pay, is listening to the dictator form scratch, not reading along like QA does, where, yeah, it is easy to catch a word or meaning when most of the hard work is already done from an MT who was probably struggling to even get that much intelligible information from someone chewing or sneezing, coughing, or when a child is screaming in the background.

If anyone really wanted to 'fix' the problem, there would be a job created to help educate MTs having consistent problems (not just, gee, today we do not like the way you punctuated, so you are a terrible MT).  Hiring also should be better controlled.

One wonders, are you that critical to the overseas MTs?  Hardly...their work is probably 50% worse than any of our worst MTs, yet look how they are thirving...and your bosses are even wooing them.

Help MTs, stop crucifying them for errors that are not causing harm to patients, and remember we are struggling against time, as well.  Only, WE are the reason YOU have jobs.
Was previously a linguist ... sm
heavy study and use of the formation of languages including latin and greek, tested and rated native speaker in 1 language, semifluent/conversational in 3 others, recognize/partially understand 7 others (not counting English and from varying language types), and was a speed typist from high school (on old manual - was so glad when memory typewriters came out because they could keep up with me.). It was kind of a piece of cake for me. Been at this for 13+ years now. It is basically another language, but that's where my background was, and probably why I don't have much trouble with ESL.

copies of previously transcribed reports
What I always found helped, make copies of reports from the medical record charts.  Make a few copies of each doctor and keep them in your desk that way you can refer back to the report when doing the doctor.  You will get the hang of it.  No hospital wants to go through the money and time hiring someone just to let them go right away.  Usually you get about a three to six month probation period.
I posted previously...don't quit old job before starting new job.

No belly. Full coverage, as previously stated.

I did not say I looked like a teeny bopper or hooker.  I said I traded my stretch shorts and t-shirts for denim shorts and a tank top.  Yeah, the shorts are somewhat low rider because they don't come up to my bra like the stretchy shorts do, but they've got a full rise that covers the crack and belly button.

Oh, no!  I must be a wanna-be trampy teenager!  Maybe next I'll go out and get some red satin thongs, a belly button ring and a butt tattoo because y'all are jumping on me like that's what I'm trying to do.  If you can't understand the concept of "full coverage", stay out of the conversation.

Previously unknown worm-like creatures made of
something like silicone. Supposedly the only match to this material has been made to some nanotechnology substance that is being used to destroy bacteria on meats, and soon to be used on cut fruits. Cooking kills them, but who cooks lunch meat? They are using it on cold cuts. The company making the technology won't say what big company is buying, either.

The term Morgellons is not new, but its use for this disease is new. This disease became known in I think 2004. That's pretty darn new.

And I should stress that I have not seen any worms or movement under my skin so far. I just have small nonhealing wounds (that look the same as a stage in Morgellons), and my MD is being evasive.

Previously Unknown Prehistoric Species Discovered In Israel Cave
Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have announced today the discovery of eight previously unknown, ancient animal species within "a new and unique underground ecosystem in a cave near Ramle, Israel.

In a press conference on the Mt. Scopus campus of the Hebrew University, the researchers said the discovery came about when a small opening was found, leading to a cave extending to a depth of 100 meters beneath the surface of a quarry in the vicinity of Ramle, between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The quarry is operated by cement manufacturer Nesher Industries.

The cave, which has been dubbed the Ayalon Cave, is "unique in the world", said Prof. Amos Frumkin of the Hebrew University Department of Geography. This is due mainly to its isolation from the outside world, since the cave's surface is situated under a layer of chalk that is impenetrable to water. The cave, with its branches, extends over some 2½ kilometers, making it Israel's second largest limestone cave. It is to remain closed to the public to permit further scientific research.

The invertebrate animals found in the cave – four seawater and freshwater crustaceans and four terrestial species – are related to but different from other, similar life forms known to scientists. The species have been sent to biological experts in both Israel and abroad for further analysis and dating. It is estimated that these species are millions of years old. Also found in the cave were bacteria that serve as the basic food source in the ecosystem.

The animals found there were all discovered live, except for a blind species of scorpion, although Dr. Dimentman is certain that live scorpions will be discovered in further explorations and also probably an animal or animals which feed on the scorpions.

The underground cave includes an underground lake, in which the crustaceans were found. The lake is part of the Yarkon-Taninim aquifer, one of Israel's two aquifers, yet is different in temperature and chemical composition from the main waters of the aquifer. The lake's temperature and salinity indicates that its source is deep underground.

Among the interesting features of the discoveries thus far in the cave is that two of the crustaceans are seawater species and two others are of a types found in fresh or brackish water.

This can provide insights into events occurring millions of years ago regarding the history of ancient bodies of water in the region.

Now, go to the link and see a pic of one of the little buggers!

it's spelled right. Exo means outside and you know what phrenic means. nm

But why sign it to put the past behind? The past should have

It seems that they dredged up the past by wanting the release signed to keep them out of trouble for unfair employment practices.  Usually when a person ends the working relationship, they give formal written notice, the company accepts the notice, and the employment is over.  Smells pretty fishy to send a termination agreement and, oh by the way, sign this release.  LOL

you are right (sigh)
They "say" that this system can tell if you do that. I believe that it can but I don't think they take the time to check. I know how to cherry pick too, but I don't. That is why I liked it when I used to get paid by the minute. Now that was wonderful! Those days are long though--gone to VR.
sigh
Like I said, it's not the info. It's something else.

& I've been using Belarc for years.
I don't think I could be an MT now, sigh...sm
It's been close to three years since I retired, and I can't believe the changes. I never worked with VR/SR, whatever you call it, so I'm not in a position to say anything about it. I could probably teach terminology, but that's all. I was never a computer whiz, and all this new software alone would be overwhelming.

How can it be profitable to use some of this VR with horrible dictators and then the MT have to spend an hour making corrections to what she could just type in, say, 15 minutes or less? It makes no sense to me, but like I said, I am now out of the current loop for sure.

I remember in May of 1992, the then-JAAMT had a wall poster that said, "Transcriptionists...there is more to medical records than voice recognition." Apparently that is no longer considered true.
Sigh...
I subscribe to the Monster.com daily job finder, that sends me daily job openings in areas that are of interest to me.  I found a job this morning for an MT where they required NO EXPERIENCE whatsoever.  This was 100% telecommute position.  Let that soak in for a minute...Okay.  So this company promises at least $7.00 to start, and they will provide a book for you.  I guess that's what this has come to nowadays, where they take any Joe Schmo off the street, and say, "Well, here you go.  Start transcribing!"  Isn't that something?  Little Suzie Homemaker who takes this gig, thinking she'll now be able to stay home with her kids and make some money typing is in for a bit of a shock, when she gets a neurosurgical report from Dr. Tadimallakaidanelankea.  I wonder what's in that one book that they provide, that will magically turn her into a skilled MT...
No need to sigh....
Some people just like to come off like they are know-it-alls....  drives me insane!  Just keep on truckin'; you'll be fine!

[sigh..] I know I'll get flamed for this, but - sm

 - here goes, anyway!   ----  "How funny would THIS be?"

I know it would be impossible to ever get MTs to stick together on anything, let alone a work-stoppage kind of strike.  But can you imagine the hilarity (at least on OUR end, anyway), if for just one week.  Heck - one DAY, even -- we all decided to transcribe everything verbatim?  And I mean, VERBATIM, not the 'fixed-up' kind of verbatim most of us are expected to do.  I mean verbatim, as in if they don't punctuate anywhere in a 3-page letter, they get a 3-page unpunctuated letter.  They screw up the 'copy-to' addresses, then instead of spending OUR time looking up the correct address or spelling of the recipient, let it go as-is.  If they say "left" and MEANT "right", they get "left".  When they bounce back and forth between calling the patient a "he" and a "she", and don't clarify it, then that will be come a report on the world's first simultaneously dual-gender individual.  All the little checks and balances, and save-their-@ss type of transcription we do automatically, doesn't get done for one day.  Unfortunately, it would probably cause every Editor in the country to simultaneously call in sick with killer migraines.  But that's okay, at least it would be FUNNY.  And lord knows, this profession could sure use a laugh now and then, couldn't it?

sigh...another report to add gray to the head
Doing a psych eval on a patient I really got caught up in, one of those sad cases that can get to you, feelingbad for the family, traumatic brain injury after an MVA, 23 with 1 yr old twins....has not been the same since, hence needed a psych consult on admission.  IF I typed this phrase once I typed it 20 times "patient very highly distressed and anxious"....well so was I by the time I spend 45 minutes for 68 lines...nope, not ESL, but all American good ol boy, must have had a beard, can't figure out what the static & noise was, but noticed when he blew my ear drums out it was there,,,when he strained them, it was'nt..not sure why he felt he had to whisper on parts then break the sound barrier on others  anyway...signed off before another one of HIS reports..geez!
Neither one scared me because they're both fiction!! (Sigh)

Have gotten as much as $3,000 in the past.

The hospital I worked for for 28 years (as a medical lab technologist) always gave us a Christmas bonus. This ranged from $3,000 one year in the 80s down to an orange (yeah, a piece of fruit) and a calendar a few years later. It usually averaged, though, around $200 or so. It always depended on the hospital profit for that year.

The clinic I work for now gives us $100 and a really fancy dinner-dance party (that I don't ever attend).

I have used it in the past
I had it before I got DSL.  Never had any problems at all. Lots of local numbers to call into.  Never really had problems getting bumped off.  Never had problems with busy signals.   Just was really slooowww  (as is any dial up).  I paid a few dollars more a month for the "accelerated" version.  It was supposed to be faster, but I didn't notice any difference.    I would definitely recommend it as far as dial up goes, though.
I have done this in the past and have just taken another
full time position with another company.  If you are motivated enough, then go for it.  The only advice I can offer is if they are both full time jobs with full time line requirements not hours, when the first full time job picks back up, are you going to be able to do both jobs full time?  That is the only problem I had but I was able to do it just fine.
his past was his past........if you...sm

If you have never learned in life that yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a *gift*, that's why we call it present...and to forgive what was years ago and condemn him in his 60s and continually name-call him, such as *perv* - you apparently have the personality disorder.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just as I am.....so like I said - go into the mirror.......and become introspective before you name-call....

oh, and your history is 100% perfect?  Oh, I get it - you have no faults from the past or prefer to point out everyone else's faults or past.

'tis all in the attitude.......

My past
Hope my "name" doesn't bother anyone, but I just couldn't help but post.

I can relate to how you are feeling about your friend. I suffered from secondary infertility (I had a child but when she turned 2 I started trying to have another and couldn't). I found a web site where I could post and formed many friendships. Most were women who had NO children. My heart went out to them.

The web site is
www.INCIID.org if your friend wants to check it out. I have formed lifelong friendships with several I met on there.

End of my story is that after 9 years of fertility treatments (torture!!!) and 2 miscarriages along the way (worse than torture!!!!) I finally went the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) route and got my twins. My family is now complete. It was a very long, hard haul though. So anyone considering fertility treatmens should keep that in mind. Emotionally and financially. To consider taking out a loan for $15,000 for a one-shot deal at IVF was excruciating. Especially after my doc only gave me a 10% chance of it working.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write a book. I just want to be a source of hope for someone who is going through infertiltiy and miscarriage. It has scarred me, that's true, but these babies make up for the pain of those years. Wishing your friend the best!
I have in the past. I have to
change the covers frequently. If you run out, just rig covers made from clean, soft, thin cloth or Kleenex. I wrap the tissue around it, cut off excess, and secure with small rubber bands. Aaaaaah!

Lots of MTs have ear problems. After showers, dry out ears with an astringent on a Q-Tip, being very gentle. You can even hold 2 Q-tips together to make them too large to accidently jab too deep. Dry out excess astringent with dry ends of Q-tip and don't put on headphones until air-dried completely. If skin is oily, you can use wipe the entire ear and behind with witchhazel to normalize the ear skin and avoid irritation. I can even use alcohol or 2% salicylic acid on my ears. Feels great to oily skin.
I have seen this in the past also
I did training for the small service I worked for, and have worked with new grads all the way up to 20+ years' experience and had a very different focus training each. The older MTs (exp. not age) who had received no QA did have trouble adjusting sometimes; some were more demoralized by it, no matter how kindly it was delivered, and some would get angry and say things like "I've always done it this way and no one has complained." And some had difficulty with the computer programs we used, more so than the newer MTs. I would think that latter problem would be even more pronounced now with all the fancy software out there.

So I think I get she's saying, but on the other hand, I don't think it was too smart or tactful for her to say it and be quoted for it! I've always thought you need a mix of MTs for a healthy environment, newer and "older"!
How do get past the
frustration of KNOWING QA changes are incorrect?  Working at Chronicle I had one good QA person I was dealing with and would send me what they call a comparison report.  Then when I typed on a different shift and asked for a finished report I noted that many of the blanks I had left were still there BUT there were also things changed that I KNOW were incorrect?  As an MT, are we within our rights to question QA changes and also the experience level of the QA?  Viewing the particular changes made in my instance, there is no way this QA person carried any kind of experience.
There have been some things with others in the past

In fact, he's estranged from both of his children, one son and one daughter, they actually hate him and have written nasty letters.  The daughter is completely insane, does drugs, married about four or five times, a thief, but nothing has been brought up about any sort of abuse.  His other daughter and I have talked.  She said that her mother growing up was very suspicious of her and her father's relationship.  Actually accused her of leading him on, or teasing him, and something happened where she caught her naked and him in the same room and got mad at her.  The daughter swears nothing was going on, but who knows, we didn't know him back then.  So it ruined her relationship with her mother.

He has my family fooled that he's this great wonderful guy, yet his own family wants nothing to do with him.  Thats why bad mouthing him, I would be ostracized.  They all know he's slightly perverted, but its accepted.  Thats why i'm wondering if i'm blowing it out of proportion.  All I know is that its changed and i'm extremely uncomfortable.  Being too specific about what he's said is too embarrassing to even mention to them. I don't even want to make eye contact with him.

that's a blast from the past

I remember that term from years ago.

I did a Google search and the closest I got was a Maxwell Sweetheart retractor: http://www.snowdenpencer.com/snowden/dspcatalog.nsf/b7e010000d3e8e708525666e004dfec2/0174ad87011670c085256673005b0e34?OpenDocument

If you read the first paragraph, it's referring to the shape of the blade ... so my guess is if you can have a heart-shaped blade with a retractor, why not with the tenaculum.

She has been referred in the past - sm
by social services, that's where they hooked up with her current psychologist.

It's a rural area, not much to offer, so they are looking further away from home now to find the right person/people for counseling.

Should also mention that SS dropped the ball on more than one occasion when it comes to Tater and her younger brother (different father.) Tater's mom has also relinquished custody of the baby brother in the past couple of months. Just handed him over without so much as a "how ya doin" to the boy's father, who is also the same guy that she had tossed in jail for domestic abuse and has a standing no contact order against. Some mother.

living it for the past 2.5 yrs---
my ex quite working a legal job so he doesn't have to pay support.  my 3 yo son was able to get insurance through the state but it was very hard to get (and didn't keep it) they don't cover that much. the state keeps rewriting the laws and cut benefits each time.  I'm an ic and have my own health ins for my son and myself. I'm robbing peter to pay paul right now and probably will be for a long time.  we're doing without a lot of things so that I don't have to take a job outside of the house not to mention that I couldn't afford full time child care.   I would try getting extra side jobs so that you could stay home.   I worked 3 jobs for 2 years and went down to one job that promised full time work a couple of months ago and needless to say they haven't kept up their end of the deal-as usual-so I'm looking to pick up at least 1 other job.  the peace of mind knowing that I'm here and flexible, especially if my son gets sick, isn't worth trading right now.

Felony in Past
I've just completed an MT course and am now looking to get hired.  I have been turned down by a couple of companies because I have a felony in my past from 1995.  Can someone who has a felony every get hired to be an MT or have I wasted my money and time?  If it is possible to get hired, any ideas on which companies I should try.  Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
