life is too short
Just chalk it up to your value system being different from your value system. Nothing dumb about it. I have seen the same happen.
Life is too short
to let these kind of games drag you down. You know what you contributed and "she" knows you are the one who provided the original data. She will have to live with her dishonest type of manipulation. You cannot change her, you can only change how you react to her.
Keep doing a terrific job for your own satisfaction. The only person you need to "oneup" is yourself. Set goals to outdo yourself and know that the better you do, the more satisfying your job will be. It takes 2 people to play the game. I suggest you bow out of the game and it takes away the fun for the other person.
I have been there too. It will happen anywhere you work if you "play the game." The choice is yours. I hope this helps. I only mean it in a supportive way.
Life is too short....
don't sell your peace of mind and health for a few bucks - you can never buy it back at any price once it's gone. Take care of yourself.
Life is too short . . . if you can afford it,

Life is too short to be miserable
I am in this profession because I honestly love the work, and I love being an IC (setting my own work hours, being at home, etc.) I started out working for local doctors at home, then when that situation changed and I had to go to a company, I was blessed that I hit a good one first thing and have never had to experience a bad one. I am telling you all of this to hopefully encourage you. It is possible to be happy in this field, and there are good companies to work for. Life is too short to be stuck in a job where you are yelled at, bullied, and ready to throw in the towel. I hope you either start looking for a different MT job, or start pursuing another career - something that makes you happy.
Take a vacation honey...life is too short to
worry about jobs, bosses, money, etc. Believe it or not, there are other jobs out there no matter what the doom and gloomers say! Be kind to yourself and your family...you come first.
I agree. Life is too short. Be the bigger person and keep reaching out.
My sister is a big 'ol gossip. She has talked about me more times than I can remember and she has been telling our mom on my all my life. She and I would have bitter fights as adults and not speak for months at a time, but then one day I realized that she's never going to change. So I basically stopped confiding in her things I didn't want to the world or my mom to know and moved on. We have a great relationship now mostly because I won't allow myself to be in a position where she can make me angry.
8 is NOT good if never going any higher - good to get the rust out in the short term though

Almost 20 years with a short relapse.
If you get the urge to light up, do whatever it takes to put it off, don't think of it as not smoking, just keep putting it off. The longer you keep putting it off, the farther apart the urges become. You can do it. You really can.
When I first quit, I decided to crochet an afghan to have something to do with my hands. You can look at that afghan now and still tell which end I started on. The stitches are so tight and close together, you can tell I must have been gritting my teeth as I did it. By the time I was done, the stitches loosened up and so did I.
After quitting for almost 10 years, I started smoking 1 or 2 on the weekends (yes, beer was involved). Then it was 3 or 4, then 5 or 6. I found out I was pregnant, put them down, and haven't smoked another since. That was almost 12 years ago. Best of luck!!
I was getting $3 a page 12 years ago. But $2 might not be bad for VERY short clinic notes.
It also "cheats" them out of about 15 years of life
Feed the squirrels in your yard if you don't want responsibility for your animals.
Do you let your dog run free because you don't want him caged up? Do you let your kids run free because you don't want them caged up.
Pretty lame argument you make, my friend.
I have a life and compared to my years in this
you are a newbie. First of all, people are not making the same money you made 20 years ago- most are making LESS. I have almost 40 years doing this type of work so no one can tell me about what they used to make. If you feel slighted, unloved, uncared for, as you say working your tail off, depressed, stressed, why in the world do you continue in such a dead-end job? A single mom to me means nothing more than 1 person working. If they need to make more money to live, maybe they should get another job as I did years ago when I was a divorced mother.
I used A Fujitsu Life Book the first 4 years, and just switched
And pretty much my whole personal life is set up on my lap top, as well, and sometimes additional software for other services when I've worked part-time elsewhere. And I haven't begun to use nearly all the hard drive space. I have had one minor repair problem years ago, and it was a piece of cake to carry it to Best Buy, who flipped it open and fixed the problem on the spot. Lap tops rule!

LOL...love that movie, gosh!
Try for a short sale, a good friend of mine - sm
did that a few months ago, had a mortgage and a 2nd mortgage, and just could not keep up. They agreed to a short sale on the 2nd mortgage, and by a miracle she got a buyer. She actually walked away with about $1K. Lives with boyfriend now which is saving his butt from foreclosure now.
sorry cut off - should read "that there is only one word"
I did a few years ago. Awsome!!! Changed my life. Beth Moore is the best teacher out there. nm

What is a *good* life?
If you are talking material things, forget that - they need to be with you. If you give up your children, they will never forgive you and YOU will never forgive you. This advice would be different it you were pregnant, then I would say, yes, give the baby to someone who can care for it. That is love.
If you are talking any kind of abuse, get them someplace safe. No child should have to live with drug abuse, or any kind of emotional, physical, or sex abuse.
Fad clothes, iPods, cellphones, etc., are not the ingredients of a good life. You know that. Take care and good luck to you.

Good Heavens!! Do you have a life?

Re: Good Morning America - man outsourcing his life
If Good Morning America hasn't been on yet in your area, about 45 minutes into the show Diane interviews a man who is outsourcing his life to India, from ordering groceries to reading bedtime stories to their son...OMG. Can it get any more pathetic than that? He says he contacted a few places and one quoted him $400 a month, while another $1000 a month. He even outsourced a argument with his wife. The woman in India apologized for him and sent her a card with hugs. If he were my hubby, I'd find a way to outsource my foot to implant it in his behind.
What next????
Wishing you much good fortune in your new career and life! :) nm

I used Short Keys, not Short hand for Bayscribe, it worked fine.

Unions may be good for workers short-term, but look what has happened to American car union workers.
They priced themselves out of the market while making an inferior product. Ford and GM are now junk bonds. I'm driving a Toyota. So if that's un-American just like shopping at a non-union store like Walmart, well you can talk to whoever is in charge of wages and taxes who have created this monster where even middle-class has very little extra money to support a union store where the employees are paid well and you pay the price in the product they sell. I can't afford it.
With short arms, I need chair with shallow seat, good back support and high back. Want arm rests
:+
Ditto, short ERs or short OPs....short anything! sm
And I especially don't like long OPs, they are the most boring for me, and the doctors pause a lot cause they have to think more. I just want to be done with it! Next!!! ; )
Life is life....the haven't bonded the same as if it were a 2-year-old!

Long short forms vs short short forms
Carla,
A long short form is usually easier to remember. So I would definitely assign the short forms as suggested by Kelli: SmithCThead SmithCTabdomen etc
In most Expander programs you would opt for a short short form as you have to type the whole short form before you can expand. In Instant Text you don't have to type the whole short form: you type the first two letters of your long short form and then you can type any of the following letters. So in this case you would type smcth for the first one, smcta, and you may also type smhead, smabd
This is possible when you use the Instant Text marker key to expand. If you use the space bar to expand, you may be better off assigning the initials as suggested in the second response, as you would not be able to "jump ahead".

.08 for only 2-years exp. is good- sm
obviously you do not type as fast as you think, or else type a lot out and not much Expander use. I am a snail, I type on average 60 WPM, but that can go as low as 40 WPM. I get .09 cpl at 4 years experience (not paid for spaces either so it is really about 7.75). I make between $12-$15 an hour which is okay for me. I do not have to live on what I make. But if you are only making $64 a day and have to live on it, that is not good. As for MTs making decent money, some do, but it is a myth that you will make $40-60K your first few years. If I applied myself I could make about $24K a year (before taxes of course). Those who make a LOT of $$$ are those who have one or more of the following: their own accounts, easy work, super fast typists, expand everything, don't have to look up much either terminology or dr. names/addresses and work non-stop. My work varies in difficulty, some easy, some hard; some days I look up a million addresses, others only 1 or 2. There are tons of variables in making a good line rate and salary. Obviously try to get faster at typing; try not to be distracted and enter more shortcuts/macros into your expander. I try to do that with every dictator I get so the next time I will be faster at them; yes it slows me down but in the long run it will pay off. Good luck.
After 25 years of rad MT, I think that is a very good
offer, it is what I make. I get quite a bit of long stuff, but with using macros, Is still make my quota in 4-5 hours per day. I love it. I would take the offer.
Good for you. I am MQ employee, 13 years. SM
I just read on MTJobs.com MQ is offering $2000 sign on bonus@ I have not had a raise for years, get calls at 2 AM to do STAT reports, feel burned out. Not only am I leaving MQ, but I am starting a new career in the food business.
If you're good enough, I don't think those years
will matter.
Sorry, I don't know of a specific company. Hubby gets benefits, so that's never been a factor for me. I work for MQ right now, which I'm trying to get out of and have started another PT job. That one's good, but it is IC with no benefits. MQ does have benefits, but I really don't know how they are.
I would suggest posting on the company board and asking more specific questions, i.e., what are some companies that have decent insurance, do any companies give paid holidays, etc.
In all honesty, you probably won't find a company that fits all you want. You may have to decide which are most important and go from there.
I did NutriSystem 15 years ago. The food was good.
I got scared when the week I went in and had eaten off the program they said, "We've created a chemical balance in your body and ANYTHING you eat off the program screws it up." That scared me. I wondered what in the heck their chemical balance was and decided I couldn't live with it. I got off. I've obviously gained back all the weight (60+ lbs) all because I BELIEVE if you don't want to stay on it forever then you can't do it. You'll never get their chemical balance with regular food and you'll gain if and when you decide to quit paying and go off their foods. Think real hard, change what you're eating with real food and you'll do much better in the long run.
Depends on how much experience you have. I have 26 years, not good for me. nm
nm
If you haven't done MT in many years, that is a very good rate...sm
Many things have changed and companies usually require more recent experience. I say go for it!
Heck, yeah! Good pay for 1-1/2 years experience.
I've been using it a few years now. It's pretty good. You'll get used to it. -nm

Good things take time. (this is addressed to OP, BTW) My first 15 years or sm
so of MT was without the benefit of using an expander. When Expanders became the norm, I was reluctant to try, thinking that it would be more cumbersome than by not using it at all. Was I surprised and pleased I had ventured into the Expander world.
Since you're at home you can add entries on your free time, even if you do 5 or 10 at a time, when there is no pressure on you. Start out with expanders for "the patient," "-year-old," the names of your doctors, anything that is repetitious. You will be surprised how much time this will save you. My initial expander, PRD, actually calculated saved Keystrokes and productivity. Back then I was saving 30%!
The expander is especially helpful for those crazy terms that are hyphenated or have camel caps, those that I always had to look up to check myself. Create your brief form by just using straight lowercase, for instance, duoneb for Duo-Neb (or d-n).
Speed will come, don't worry. Good luck to you!
(Posted in the wrong place--I always do that!) This is in response to OP.
I agree. It's an impossibility for me even with years of experience AND good dictators. nm

A good friend died of cancer that I suspected years before
because of a test he had and he had asked me to get a copy of, which I did, but not being "qualified", it said possible metastasis, I just told him I couldn't get it for some reason, and to talk to his doctor. His doctor, for some strange reason said it was "normal". I then asked him to get a copy of it himself, but he didn't. My husband told him to go to another doctor. It took several years, but he eventually was diagnosed with cancer after having a seizure, (it had spread to his brain) and he died a few months later.
The bottom line is, we're really not qualified to diagnose or advise people. I do feel terrible guilt for it, (you should've seen me at the funeral) but there's nothing we can do. If a doctor doesn't diagnose something properly, even if WE KNOW, there's still nothing we can do about it. We don't have the capacity to treat them and nobody is going to listen to us.
A few years ago, Atlanta in-house average was about $12-$15/hour, plus good bennies. nm
By the way, as of about 5 years ago, Wellstar was with a service. They might not even have in-house MTs. Hope so for your sake :).
The Dorland's Cardiology Word Book is good, too. Might find books at half.com even if a few years

I make sure the job is not my life and that it does not take over my life. sm
I have been at this 25 years, even once had my own accounts and worked 24/7 with cat naps to keep going but no real sleep. I really burned myself out. Now I work a regular 40-hour week, but it is not my life. It is a means of making money so I can go live my life. I work for a company that is not all about production. They want us to take our time and do it right. I am doing that, and it feels so good to be able to work at my craft and be allowed to do a good job while I am at work.
But after I get off, I have my family and I take time to have fun and enjoy life. I think that is the key to not staying burned out. You need down time, time to have fun, exercise, relax, etc.
Exercise is very important, too. It rejuvenates the hormone system so you have more positive hormones flowing through your body and helps get rid of stress.
That's what I do.
The short of it.....
When management sends you E-mails filled with typos, they are going to you, not to the client. Since you aren't paying management, it doesn't matter if every word they type in their E-mails to you is spelled wrong. See, management's paying you to transcribe error-free reports. Understand now?
PRD short cut help
I have been using the PRD short cut program on an old DOS-based computer in WP51. I have upgraded to Windows XP with WordPerfect X3 and wondered if there is anyway to use the PRD with this program. I have had to use other short cut programs for Word on my XP computer but have recently had to move all my WordPerfect work to my new computer and need a short cut program for it as well. I would sure love to be able to use the PRD. Anyone with any helpful information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
I do think it's too short but...
the company I work for only gives you 2 days. :(

My guess is that VIPS like this would have decoy names, and they should.
I agree that AHDI or whatever AAMT wants to be called now is just another thing to watch and not trust. That said, why should anyone want government to be in charge of everything and be trusted to not screw it up? They've shown us already (both parties) how well that's worked, so I'll handle my own "change," thank you.
AHDI is another form of big government making things more difficult for us.
