Our clinic is converting to Escription, now after the initial training period Escription is doing OUR work..will we ever get our work back?
i think the whole thread is in jest at the fools who run MQ, past and present.
How many MQ CEOs does it take to give MTs a raise after 5-6 years or to award a prize of a trip to Hawaii offered months ago? What a joke and the jokes on us - for now.
The future of transcription....
Actually, it's listed in job future forecasting as a growing field, in light of the aging Baby Boomers. There's one thing for sure in this world, people will get old and sick. As far as voice recognition, I think it will fall by the wayside just as soon as people realize that it has very limited realistic possibilities for quickly producing a quality document. It will NEVER happen and I've said it all along. A "few" doctors who are very committed have made it work in their own practice, but as my eye doctor told me (who tried it a while back for his office dictation), "I don't have time to fuss with it." He said that if we going to have to hire someone to make it right, since he didn't have time to make sure it was right himself, then he might as well just have someone transcribe it.
The last factor in the availability of experienced MTs is the pay. It has gone continually down in the last 10 years. How can you expect to hire someone to do something which is very specialized and pay them peanuts? If it were a job where people thought they could make a good income, they'd pursue the field. But the word is out that it's no more than sweat shop wages in many places, so why bother? And I agree with you about mentoring. The hospital I work for (at home) does hire a newbie at a time and train them. But that's increasingly rare as the almighty dollar dictates everything these days.
and maybe you can do their transcription in the future, but not now.
:P
future of medical transcription?
I have been doing transcription now for a while, under five years, for a national. How long do you all think it will be until it is a completely a speech recognition technology? My national is definitely trending towards the speech recognition and I just wonder how long it will be until it is totally that platform, and before hospitals and other nationals as a whole start using it mainstream. Medical editing doesn't seem like it will be very lucrative as transcription has been in the past.

Article regarding the future of transcription
I came across the following website regarding the future of transcription.
Lisa Croydon is the owner of Ask the MT an informative website on how to become a medical Transcriptionist from home. She writes this very informative article that I refer almost every MT to. Of course, having a backup plan is always a good idea, but this article can reassure MTs that their jobs won't disappear.

We transcribe "medical jargon?" What?
I just looked at this site! My gosh--what is that guy on. So our job is to transcribe medical jargon, huh? According to Webster's, jargon is incoherent speech, gibberish (okay--that could be true), dialect unknown to one so that it seems incomprehensible (maybe for some of the dictators), a mixed or hybrid language (some dictators could fall into that category).
Ah--here we go--the specialized vocabulary and idioms of those in the same work, professional, etc., sportswriters (if only we got paid THAT well) or social workers (they make less than we do), or a somewhat derogatory term, often implying unintelligibility: see SLANG, and lastly, speech or writing full of long unfamiliar or roundabout words or phrases.
This could explain the downward trend in pay scales for MTs!! And very good point on not even having our own tax code--sportswriters do!
I was wondering that too--- the only thing I could think of was "medical examiner" - which doe

I just started telling them I was a "medical language expert"
as you truly are one anymore trying to decipher all these docs and for some reason, that title seems to bear more acceptance

It seems that they dredged up the past by wanting the release signed to keep them out of trouble for unfair employment practices. Usually when a person ends the working relationship, they give formal written notice, the company accepts the notice, and the employment is over. Smells pretty fishy to send a termination agreement and, oh by the way, sign this release. LOL

The worst Christmas (2001) was seeing my mother in a coma on Christmas day and dying the day after. Nothing I get from now on could make me think it was worse than that.

It will all depend on your experience as an MT, with ESLs and acute care more specifically, and what platform you are on.
It IS doable, but will take most moderately experienced, moderately fast MTs a bit of time to achieve. While I can and did to this from my very first day, I am NOT your benchmark, but I am here to tell you, YOU CAN DO IT with some effort.
maybe ask present employer to
cross-train you...pick up part-time job and start at a lesser rate in order to allow for training...
If this had just started with the present
administration, might write but hey, this happened how long ago now? Can we write to the people in charge then and say don't send our jobs overseas? The present one is not to blame but having said that, I fully understand where the OP is coming from. I absolutely did not go and see Slumdog Millionare (even though I heard was great) because I hear enough day in and day out of other languages and I sure do not want to pay money and hear more. I am a prejudiced person now, not against most here but like the OP, mostly India.
I didn't have to test for my present
job. She looked at my work experience and that I was from a very large company, and took that as good enough.
Forget the present. His gift will be you.

I don't think the present Voice Systems will improve
I believe it is best not to name names, as others have pointed out in this message board. So, instead, I will simply post the job as listed on MTjobs.com and say that the same person is posting this job as when I was bilked. 'Nuff said.

I would just advise to present your situation clearly w/o 'whining' (sm)
as my DH went several years back and there was a lady who worked on her farm picking crops, her husband was disabled, and she sold at market on the weekend - the judge actually bought from her - and judge refused to excuse her and said it was a 3-day trial, was her civic duty and would be over soon.. DH did QA at the time and didn't say anything after that :(
Got that right! Wish an autopsy would present itself to break the monotony. nm

NO. I'm making 0.075 cents/line at present. SM
Have 20+ years experience as an IC, mostly clinic work, which is what I like. Have been CMT since 1997. most companies will pay up to 10 cents for CMT, if you are lucky, but ONLY IF you work full time at THEIR production level which for someone like me will not work.
Keep your present job while trying out a new company; the grass may not be greener

Look, I am as tired of everything as everyone. My heart breaks for MTs who cannot buy present for t
and it breaks my heart for people not helping other people. I don't know what your point is. I just don't want to be attacked and it seems we get off the subject and take one line from a post and use it against the person.
I have given people money that came to me door saying they couldn't pay their rent when I didn't really have it, not the whole rent but what I could give. It wasn't important that I knew if they were telling the truth or not, it was important to me I could help. I took 2 cats to help a woman who was evicted from her apartment or she was going to leave them there. I already had 2 cats. I am not religious but it seems strange I was taking my trash out and commented to her about moving when she told me she had been evicted, and about the 2 cats. She was not able to get them back and now I have 4 cats. I gave her money during this time and I did not even have a car. I gave her money on several occasions and I did not put retrictions on where it went. I gave her what I could without going hungry or my cats going hungry and I know she appreciated it. My new neighbors borrowed over 100.00 from me and 2 months later I asked them when they could repay it and it made them mad. They didn't speak to me the rest of the time I lived in that apartment. So what I am saying about that is don't loan money you cannot afford to get back, I already knew that but I was going through a bad time with a company I was working for and needed it. Some people are users but I would rather believe and do, if I help someone it helps me more. The woman with the cats stayed in that apartment for 3 nights with no electricity because she had nowhere to go. The people who borrowed the money from me had a little girl and they said they needed it for a drug prescription. I could have said no I didn't have it, and no I didn't have so much money I could throw it away but even though it made them mad at me, I know that little girl got her medicine. Maybe it was all a lie, I don't really know, but in my mind she got the medicine.
I don't know why it offended you that I said don't attack me, you don't know my situation and I don't know yours. I have no family, just my pets and if someone showed up at my door I would give them what I could, I am just built that way. If I said no, I would shut the door, and then probably run down the street to find them. I have a roof over my head, doesn't mean I will in 2 months, but so many people don't. I am sorry but I really hurt over this.
GO for it girlie girl! This is your New Year's present! sm
I am happy for you! You deserve a break and here it is. I hope you love it and it works out well for you.
People cannot fight the power and corruption that is present
in he political system. These politicians are bought by special interests. Many of the people with special interests are corporations, insurance companies, etc. They have major money to contribute to run a politician's campaign. Both Democrats and Republicans take this money. So if both the politicians are in need of money to win an election and you and I can provide the money the special interests are going to be heard above and beyond the little guy with a beer in his hand who is working 8-5 and wouldn't know how to organize a revolution if he had an instruction book. Besides he is too darn tired and has to mow the grass, take the kids to the movies, etc, etc, etc.
So you got both parties taking special interest money in return for favors granted (or the funding is stopped and the party can't win) What is the American public going to do? Not vote? You only get two choices and the system is corrupt. What do you do? Once again, you are assuming the American public is intelligent and united. If you read posts or editorials anywhere you will see the American public is divided led by sound bites or blind loyalty to a political party. You aren't going to see anyone overthrow this government in this lifetime. People in power are not going to give it up to let Joe-Six-Pack run the country on his $100 day budget to campaign. It is sad but true. We have been led down a path that it is too late to turn back. While the politicians were passing these laws to allow offshoring/outsourcing, we were watching TV or busy with daily activities of living, thinking this will never affect me. And it's the same deal now.
Anybody agree on who should be president? How about Iraq war? Anybody agree on forcing the national companies to pay us more for MT? Come on. Be real. You can't unite this country on the smallest issues.
I think it is decided, and you can kiss this account goodbye. I would present the sm
finished work, along with a bill, and when you expect payment.
Meanwhile, get real busy looking for something else to make it up.
I disagree, I would leave the room and ask a nurse to be present...sm
I think it would be uncomfotable for your daughter or son (for a son even more!) when they are over the age of 14 for you to be present at their intimate exams!
Ask your children, unless you turn away your face and then you don't see anything anyways.
Give them their privacy!
They are not babies anymore!
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Rebecca, Wuthering Heights -- I really should come into the present but I
just love all of the old movies so much more than the new stuff, although some of it is okay. For current I would have to say Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man and Gladiator, cause I just think Russell Crowe is a wonderful actor, although not too sure of his true personality.
The majority of pcs being sold at present are labeled as "Vista Ready." This is
your best bet. Most MT companies will not make Vista a requirement for at least a few years.
I am going to have my son present this on Thursday for his position paper in Govt class.
One way to get people, even though they're seniors in high school besides the teacher, to become aware of this situation. Because it's not just the VA, it's every record that goes overseas, and Mr. Messiah Obama, et. al., fail to understand that or address it.
I got a REAL present for MT week from my part time employer. I love it!
way off topic wedding present question - is there proper etiquette on the amount a guest must (sm)
spend on the wedding present? I have known people who hardly know the bride and groom yet spend $75 to $100 on a present. Is this now the expected/correct amount to spend? I was inclined to spend $25. Am I being cheap?
Agree, verbatim transcription equals poor quality transcription.

future of VR
My personal opinion is that for now only some companies will use it but eventually it will become more predominant like all technology, i.e., cassettes to mini-cassettes to C-phones, etc.; as well as manual typewriters to electric to memory typewriters to computers. It seems to be something people either love or hate, but I do believe it is here to stay, though not take over.

In the future you should try
doing a catchy flyer with pertinent info and faxing it. This works much better. Most of your mailers probably went in the trash without being opened. If you do a flyer, try using phrases like -will beat your current Transcriptionist rate- you WILL get calls. You can bargain from there.
I have a friend who works in a doctor's office and a drug rep gave them a list of phone numbers and fax numbers for all physicians in the area. If you can get one of these, just go down the list and fax 10 or 15 back to back at a time. I got several calls.
MT future
I have ben doing transcription for 7 years and ASR editing for about 6 months. From what I see, it will be a very, very long time before it is perfected. Honestly, transcription has not been lucrative for me in the past and although pay is slightly lower than transcribing, I have not seen much of a diffence to my bottom line.
MT future
sorry about typos, been a long day!
future
unfortunely, seems to work well for radiology...hospital probably a safer bet for future work.
there is editing needed, but personally would rather type thanlisten and correct. and many self edit anyway.
no future in MT
I agree. Itis the same old crap everywhere you go. Lousy pay, no raises, etc. I've worked for several agencies and it is only same old routine.
since i'm not sure about the future of MT
I've gone back to school as well. I'm completely torn as to what I want to do, i'm back and forth, and the past two years have been taking courses for nutrition and psychology, and cannot decide between the two. When I was a soph in HS I knew I wanted to do something with psychology, but here it is 15 years later, when I've decided to go for it, and its just brutal, the studying, the work on top of a full time job. I SOOO wish I would have just started 15 years ago, in that direction. I've always had a full time job and moved out at a young age, so just took the technical college route and learned MTing.
I'm looking at about 10 years of college because I can only go part-time, to be a clinical psychologist. I'm thinking of just going for the nutrition. I love working with food, time flies when i'm in the kitchen and I love watching people enjoy what i've made. I just know its a stressful job, you're on your feet a lot, and its more about speed than anything. I went to the library today and bought a book "can you stand the heat" all about the working conditions of a chef. I know I do not have it in me to be in school the next 10 years, i'm sorry, maybe if I were independently wealthy and could just focus on that. Becoming a chef will take less than three years. I will do MT'ing as long as its around though, as I enjoy working independently.
Go to the library, there are books that fit your personality type with a specific job, and then a list of the pros and cons, the money you would make. Just really research it. If its what you want to do the rest of your life, make sure its something that will make you happy.

Is there a future for me as a IC MT...
Hello! I'm new here but any advice would be welcomed. I haven't worked as a full-time MT in nine years. Mostly I've done Pathology at a hospital in Las Cruces, NM. I would like to get back into the MT field so I've purchased the SUM Advanced CD, which I am currently working on, and 19 practice dictation tapes from "Absolute Experience". I have also just started a workbook entitled, "The Language of Medicine." After I've finished all this, is there a future for me as an independent contractor MT? This is really the only job that pays well that I can do from home. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance! Shelley P.S. I took a test this week through a company called StatIQ in Albuquerque and I was surprised that I scored 94% (since it has been so long). However, you must score 98% to secure a job.
Why not? Don't you think that even future - sm
programmers, code writers and technical engineers are warned that a lot of U.S. work is being sent to other countries?
