you don't have to be skinny to have an eating disorder

Posted By: i understand on 2009-02-10

and even though it sounds like you hurt your metabolism you CAN lose weight. it's all about calories in, calories out.

I wish I had an eating disorder
for one think it would be pretty cool. I just want to get more attention from my man, friends and family members who don't pay enough attention. When I pick up the mags I see all the thin models like Nicole Ritchie and Ms. Hilton. They are stars for being super thin. I know I can't reach that fame but if I look thin I know I will have more options. I know some of you won't agree with me but that is the way society is going. Get thin or die trying.

Eating Disorder
My 22-year-old niece has an eating disorder. Her Cardiologist sent her home to die. She is in a wheelchair now. The doctors give her less than 6 months to live. Be careful for what you wish for. Skinny is NOT worth dying for. Your post is so sad.
Maybe you do have an eating disorder. You don't have to be thin
to have one.    If your weight is an issue you the one that has the power to change it.   Been overweight all of my entire life, but this is the year I'm determined to tackle it.  Just too bad I didn't do it 20 years ago.
Young child and eating disorder?
I am wondering if there is something wrong with my stepson.  I've been married to my hubby now for over a year, but his stepson still will not get close to me and I have stopped trying.  I already feel like he has some developmental problems, as well as learning difficulties (he failed kindergarten).  I just wonder can a young child have some type of eating disorder or do all kids do this?  He will go a day or two and not eat anything and you cannot make him eat and then the next day, you can't fill him up.  It is every 30 minutes he is asking my hubby for something to eat.  And I cook a 3-course dinner every night so he has the opportunity to eat and I fix things he likes.  Sometimes the only way my hubby can make him eat is if he tells him he'll carry him to the doctor if he doesn't eat.  He's almost like an anorexic.  He'll go a few days and hardly eat anything and then for a day or two, he binges.  And he is very skinny and small for his age.  And also sickly.  His nose is always stuffy and you can hear him breathing.  Just want some opinions on this.  Thanks.
SKINNY!!!
I thought she looked horrible, maybe it was the dress she had on but I think she has lost a LOT of weight.
Never been skinny - sm
Well I have never in my life been skinny, but I can tell you that I am very happy, and very hippy.  I do not know if it has anything to do with my size or not, but if I want an icecream sunday for dinner, I have it.  Not every day of course, that would be crazy, but my point is I do not worry about whether I am going over my calories or points for the day, I worry more whether my family and I are enjoying life to its fullest and are all healthy.  I am sure if my weight were to effect my health that I would rethink this attitude, but so far I am completely healthy (praies God).
What do you consider skinny?....
I am 5 foot 71/2 inches, 132 pounds, BMI of 22..but some would call that fat by today's standards. I am 47 and have maintained this since being a teenager, other than 3 pregnancies. I would rather eat properly and get exercise than worry about having health problems associated with being overweight.
I actually gasped when I saw her. She looks very skinny.
.
Yup, there are skinny women
who have 2 teeth and a moustache who can't seem to climb up the evolutionary rung so I would say that statement was false. If I understood the odd statement...LOL
Well, I'm right in the middle, not skinny just healthy
I've never really been skinny, I'm too curvy to ever be skinny, but I'm at a healthy weight (bmi of 21) and very happy with my body. I pretty much eat whatever I want, just know I need to exercise more if I eat high-calorie/high-fat foods. I've been overweight but was miserable and decided to make a change, definitely much happier now.
Fake, skinny. Don't have much space...sm

but I didn't want table size tree.  Got it last year and was really amazed at how pretty it turned out.

Well my son doesn't like girls to be too skinny lol (sm)
He always says the Victoria's Secret models are way too skinny. And I am not a small person, so I guess that could be why?
Ah, so you have the other disorder, you know, the one where you are delusional? LOL

Skinny versus Plump - who is happier?

Well I reckon this will start some fires...Hope I don't get burned.

In your experience, ladies and gentlemen, who is happier?  Skinny people who are afraid of a calorie/carb/fat gram?  Or plump, curvy individuals?

Having been skinny once upon a time and now having more curves than a country mountain road, I have to say I like myself so much better now that I weigh more.  It has been an experience, I tell you that much.

So what do you all think?

HC.

And Kim has a panic disorder and is agoraphobic.
It's no secret she has a bunch of mental disoders. As I said, the poor kid. Can't win.

this is the one I was referrring to.

Sounds like a personality disorder
to me. Perhaps Borderline Personality Disorder, or personality disorder NOS. Maybe, though, it is hormonal. An abundance in testosterone CAN cause aggressive behavior, mood fluctuations, etc.

I hope you get to the root of the problem. But, the main thing that concerns me is his unwillingness to be evaluated or even admit that there may be a problem. This is what leads me to believe it's a personality disorder (borderline). People afflicted with this and anti-social personality disorder often do not admit that anything is off keel with themselves. Rather, it's alway's *someone else's* problem/matter/issue.

Good luck to you. I'll be thinking of you. Please keep us posted. The erratic behavior is really concerning.
Umm...I weighed under 100 til I went to college...short and very skinny kid...still started at 9 yrs

Katya had retinoblastoma - this one had a seizure disorder.

Have any of you been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder?

I have within the last week or so.  Just wondering what meds your doc put you in and if it is helping and how long it helped all of your symptoms.  I guess I was expecting "a feel-good feeling", too, but not really.  The anxiety is definitely better.  Had gone to the ER 3 times in less than a week, thinking it was my heart, but not.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have cleaned my house and now I have adjustment disorder sm
I have been working on my bathroom remodel since Memorial Day. It should have taken 4 weekends and I only just finished on Thanksgiving Day. I did 95% of myself, including cutting holes for and installing, 2 sinks in the vanity. I am pleased, it is gorgeous, but that is another story.

Okay, I put my bedroom back together after 6 months of being a disheveled PIT. I am cleaning the house because my daughter will be home in a couple of weeks to get married at the JP in a nearby town. I still have to make her a dress too...but I wanted the house clean for she and her fiance/husband. It is coming along very well.

My problem? I can't manage a house where I am not stepping over crap on the floor, shifting stuff around so I can get to my clothes or go to bed. This is all new to me, clean floor space and no dust, a place for everything and everything in its place...I can't cope. It is clean AND tidy, the antique linens are pressed and starched, on the surfaces. IT is lovely!!!!

I am depressed now. I don't adjust well to change.
Why would you call a cat with a seizure disorder a loser???
Would you call a human with epilepsy a loser too??? Wow.
False. I'm sure there are plenty of skinny dim bulbs living in poverty

Your son has ADHD, probably combined type along with opposition defiant disorder in a nutshell...sm
Been there for 14 years. Tantrums, fighting constantly with younger brother and sister to the point of injury, i.e. kicking, punching, slapping, throwing hammers, knifes, hard soled shoes, scissors, you name it. He is wonderful outside of the house. He is considered a very nice boy who is very well mannered and a hard worker (as he likes to do yardwork. That part of it is the ADHD at work). I knew something was wrong when he was about 1 1/2 years old and his sister came along and he started hitting her right away. Everyone from teachers to counselors told me it was all my fault and that my son had found a great way of manipulating me. That is...until the fourth grade when two weeks after school started a miraculous thing happened. His teacher called me in to say something was terribly wrong and that she suspected ADHD. I got the referral for testing with a pediatric neurologist and he was diagnosed with ADHD combined type (the hyperactive part), oppositional defiant disorder, and a learning disability. It has been a tortuous 14 years, I can tell you that. I have four more years to go and although I love my son more than words can say, at the age of 18 HE IS OUT THE DOOR!!!
Puppy eating cat food, cats eating puppy food...
So I have three cats and a five month old puppy.

Cats eat Felidae, Puppy eats Canidae... or at least that is how it is supposed to be.

Both species eat mainly dry, but puppy gets wet at night when she is in "her room" (kitties do not go in puppy's room at night).

I cannot keep kitties out of Candiae and I cannot keep puppy out of Felidae

Can I relax or is this going to hurt either of them?

Advice very much appreciated!

TIA

eating out of the
Colorado - we buy a half a grass fed beef for the freezer and that lasts a year. We buy a lot of the vending snacks at Sam's because we have teenagers that need food for their back packs or they will eat out because they are gone all day. We do not ever eat out unless it is a birthday and then we spend $100.00 on a nice restaurant. We have a garden for herbs, onions, garlic, etc.
Eating Out - About the Same as You
We usually get take out on Friday's because I don't cook on Fridays (it's my day off so to speak). Then we go out on Saturday nights just my husband and myself and our best friends and usually spend about $40+ depending on where we go. The kids get together with their kids and they usually get some sort of take out. Then on Saturdays we usually either eat lunch out (fast food) and then Sundays either lunch or dinner out (fast food - I hate to say sometimes it's both). We have been trying to cut down the Saturdays and Sundays as far as the fast food goes. My daughter who is a vegetarian doesn't usually get much from the fast food restaurants so our bill usually isn't that large (About $10). We always use coupons, though (buy 1 get 1 free - we have what is called Entertainment Books that the schools usually sell). My husband will cook, and I hate to say he cooks better than I do.
Try eating ...
I have this problem as well. Stick with whole wheat/whole grain breads (buns) and whole wheat pasta rather than white. When you eat white flour products or any type of food with high glycemic index levels, it will be worse. (It's like burning pine ... whoosh!) Also, always have protein along with other foods.

You can Google glycemic index and find out which foods are better & worse to eat.
Eating Out

Not including lunch (which I generally eat out 3 or 4 days a week) how often do you have dinner out?

We eat out (or order in) way more than I want to, but DH thinks it is easier for me to do so than to cook. We eat restaurant food probably 4 or 5 nights a week, you?

Eating ice like crazy!?

I'm in a phase of craving cold water and ice like crazy these days.  Anybody know what that means, besides perhaps anemia?  I was anemic a while back, but got that taken care of and don't see any reason I should be again.  I've been cutting back on sugar and dieting a little bit, wondering if that could be it?

Whatch'all think?

something is eating my roses -
just put three rose bushes out - all had buds and blooms. Today I walk out and all buts and blooms have been bitten off.  What is this and how do I stop?  I know there are squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits.  Who is doing it?  (If it is chipmunks I am up against a wall - there must be a million).
try eating something for breakfast - even if just
toast - to get your metabolism going. Eat a bigger meal at lunch and a smaller meal at dinner. Do you find yourself eating more less-healthy foods than before? If you get hungry, drink 8 ounces of water before you eat to help fill you up. Eating more in the evening means you aren't getting a chance to work off those calories. Good luck.
what are they eating off your porch?
mine come to suet feeders.
eating problem
I'm glad you are aware of the possibility of an eating disorder - it is SO hard to tell with kids - the way they joke around about things - but sometimes joking is the way they address it - just glad you recognize the possibility. . Hugs to you and yours. .
Eating habits
Out of curiousity, what are your eating habits?  I usually eat every 2 hours or so during the day.  I have a protein shake at 7:30 and then ham and eggs at 9:30.  It's possible you had sugar with your breakfast in coffee or tea and it's worn off or the food you ate gave you a boost but has worn off.  Try having a snack at that time and see if it helps.
how do you know if you have an eating issue sm

i have so many emotions running through my mind every single day, but not going to get into all of them here.  i hope i don't have an eating issue/disorder, but sometimes i wonder.  i grew up in a strict household (my dad was immature and always telling me i was fat and needed to lose weight).  i'm an average size 5 foot 7 girl.  i'm 36 now and constantly think about food, how many calories something has, fat content.  i gain weight easily.  i just get so tired of worrying about what i'm going to eat, cause it'll make me fat.  sometimes i will sneak eating food, because my husband will say things like "do you really need that?" and he's just trying to help.  but what i really think is i want is to join WW and have group support from other people that are going through the same thing.  my husband can drink about six sodas a day, eat whatever and he doesn't gain weight.  he doesn't exercise.  it just makes me sad that i have to work so hard to not be huge.  i'm about 165.  i would like to get down to at least 150 or maybe less.  my parents used to tell me when i was little not to waste food (we were poor so wasting food was like wasting money).

i'm sorry, i'm rambling on, but i really don't have anyone to talk to.  sometimes i think i'd like to see a counselor. (i have never seen a counselor)  i have other issues that bother me but won't get into it.

thanks for listening, just wondered if anyone else has food issues.  i'm a healthy person.  i don't smoke or drink.  never did drugs.  i try to eat healthy.  i especially overdo it in stressful situations.  yesterday i ate a little less than a pint of butter pecan ice cream.  then i felt crappy the rest of the evening.

well i stop now.

What time are we eating??
:)
But if I go shopping after eating,
I'm full, nothing sounds good, and I end up with no food!
Do you get very tired after eating?
I do and I don't know what to do about it. If I even just eat a hamburger I get so tired and it last about 45 minutes or so.
Maybe she is not eating breakfast before
going to church, but I don't understand why the teacher allows it to go on. Everyone should have at least 1 donut. I would talk to the teacher.
What is the difference in a dog eating
raw chicken and roaming around outside and eating an animal it kills????
I am exercising and eating better, just wanted to
know if anyone has used this particular brand.  I know there are hundreds of knock offs, but this is suppose to be the "original."
Got that right..AND not eating when you're NOT hungry! nm
n
Yes!! I will not change my eating habits
either. I'm not where I want to be, but I"m getting there. I walk 5 to 7 days a week. Too cold right now (I'm in MN), but I love to walk outside by myself in the evening. So relaxing. Anyway....I started to see some very small weight loss when I started walking daily..maybe 1/2 pound a week. When I hit the 30-day mark it was like POW! My metabolism must've kicked in because I started losing 2 to 3 pounds. Everyone's is different though...

PS--if you're jogging you'll see more results than me, as I really just walk (not even too fast:)
Can a cat get sick by eating raw chicken.

I have some stay cats, mama and 2 babies at the door. I have been feeding them milk, dog food, whatever they will eat.  Any, one is a little kitten that managed to get inside and I did not know it.  I look in the kitchen and she has a piece of raw chicken.   I had  boneless chicken breasts out to thaw.  Is she going to get sick?  Should I give it back to her.

Holiday Eating Tips
Come on girl, you gotta have more than one slice!! :)

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them aga! in.

8. Same for pies. Apple , Pumpkin , Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples a! ND one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more t han one dessert? Labor Day ?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, even I have some standards.

10! . One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Have a great holiday season !!
what snack can you not stop eating?
I like snacking but these animal crackers from wal-mart i can NEVER stop snacking on... The only reason I keep buying them is cause they are low in fat and I would be snacking probably on chips or something worse for me if I didn't have them!!

They are what i snack on late night too!

I have stuff like granola bars and I like peanut butter on rice cakes... but i mean i just keep digging handfuls and handfuls of these little critters out. They are delicious! And I'm bored...
Agree with must change eating habits sm
If you are an emotional eater, or a grazer, it will be more difficult for you. I had the surgery, lost 100 pounds, regained 80 of it. I am a grazer who works at home, which makes it more difficult. I also lost a couple of family members to cancer, and I am an emotional eater. I know a lot of people who have had excellent, long-terms results, but also many who have not lost as much as they had hoped, or gained a lot of it back. I would still do it again, because I would probably be a lot bigger if I hadn't, and the fact that eating too much, too fast, or too much sugar makes me sick has at least helped me to not be as big as I would've been without the surgery.
Right now just trying to keep him from eating my 3-year-old action figures - sm
I wonder if he eats a spiderman figure does he become spider dog???  I keep finding small plastic arms and legs around the house.   It is getting kinda spooky.  If  I find a small plastic horse head in my bed, cute or not the doggie may have to go... LOL...
Eating an apple really helps my cravings. nm
!
Well, eating ice chips, cold water mostly
because tomorrow is a feast day and hate for my mouth to be hurting still. Tried this morning to fine the campho (sounds like) fenequic- you know what I mean and if and when I find that bugger will put on my tongue, inside on the membranes and that should help - thanks
