In Reply to: Allowance Poll: Do you give your kids an allowance? - CAMT

Kids are now 16, 14, 11, and 9.  We did not start giving allowance until about 2 years ago - couldn't afford it until then    Elementary school kids get $5, middle school gets $10 and high school gets $20.  Older gets more because she is babysitting the others for a couple hours a day 3 days a week (mom had to get a 2nd job...)

Allowance is NOT tied to jobs though.  As part of this family all are expected to do their part - clean their own rooms, get their own towels & laundry to the laundry room, and we also have a chore chart that rotates things like setting/clearing table, feeding pets, taking out trash, etc.  I believe they need to learn those responsibilities to their family and those habits for life - not something any of us get paid for as adults...  Extras like helping with special projects (clean the garage with Dad, yardwork, wash the car) may pay a little extra.  I guess we see the allowance more as a teaching tool for budgeting/saving than a reward for doing the things they should be doing anyway...

Oldest just got a job this summer (will be a junior next year) and is paying her own car insurance and gas.
