why are they so far behind?

Obviously I don't have any idea how much their monthly rent runs but that seems like a huge amount to be behind and it sounds like they have a more than generous landlord. Have they not seen this coming? Could have found something more affordable before it came to this? Now they want to borrow money from someone? My oh my. Friends or not, they need to do this on their own and IMO, no one would be doing them any favors by lending them the money.
Not sure what their income is but if it is low enough, they could qualify to live in a HUD type apartment/house.
