warning signs are not enough to do something.  Try calling the cops and telling them you are worried about a person doing something like this- they will tell you there is nothing they can do until the person actually commits the crime.  You can try to get someone to get help but they cannot be committed to psychiatric care against their will unless they are a clear danger to themselves or others at the time the psychiatrist is evaluating them.  Hindsight is 20/20- its easy to say that someone should have seen this coming and stopped it, but how exactly?  His writing teacher had referred him to counseling- it didn't work.
