I would definitely say something to her to let her know what you saw. People like that are just plain cruel. I'm sure she'd run over a cat or dog too if she could. She is just a mean person.
squirrels need to eat too
I don't think it's fair to put out food and say only this, this and that can eat, but you can't. If you don't want the squirrels to eat your birdfood try putting out a container of peanuts just for them. That's what I do. But they still snack on the birdfood once in a while. Guess they like variety too. But I don't mind, cause they are really fun and cute to watch.
I have the peanuts in a squirrel feeder with a lid on, and it's so cute how they just climb up the tree, lift up the lid and take out a peanut. Took them a day or 2 to figure it out, but now they're experts at it.
squirrels
Since the squirrels are everywhere this time of year, zig-zagging in front of our cars with their mission to hoard as many acorns as they can, I am passing on this little tip I learned from experience. If you see one headed in front of your car, hit the horn and the zig-zagging stops abruptly and they usually run back to the side of the road. I've saved quite a few from being hit this way. I've only ever hit one squirrel a few years ago and I felt really bad.
I do feed the squirrels a mix with peanuts
and seeds and sprinkle it on the ground. Unfortunately they bury the peanuts instead of eating them. I've had as many as 20 squirrels in my yard before when I spread food out on the ground for them. They're pigs and it's quite ridiculous, but yes, I do put food on the ground and in a plastic bowl in an attempt to get them to stay on the ground. They have broken 2 nice feeders already, and for those reasons, many people like to keep them off the feeders.
My mom has had generations of psycho squirrels.
They eat a hole in the porch wood every year. They eat the putty, the paint, the cayenne pepper, the Tabasco sauce, the lemon, the squirrel scoot, the deer scoot and anything else we've ever tried. This has happened for YEARS and nothing works. They don't even really run from us anymore. Squirrels are not our friends. ;-)
Squirrels are creative, aren't they?
They can figure out a way to get into most birdfeeders. True acrobats!
I feel the same - I feed the squirrels too
they are fun to watch. Clever little devils. I have a peanut feeder with a lid on and they lift the lid up and take out the peanuts. I have a pair of crows that come to eat too. I have my own little wildlife sanctuary. Now my neighbors probably aren't too happy, they're not animal people. The guy across the street puts out those poison peanuts - so mean.
squirrels. Diamonds or pearls?

That reminds me!!! Last year, the squirrels
got a hold of our outdoor cushions. I walked by the big window one day and looked out to see a squirrel tail sticking out of a cusion swishing back and forth. I made some noise and the squirrel popped and looked at me with a huge amount of cushion stuffing in it's mouth - he looked like santa claus. Needless to say, if you look way up in the tree, our squirrels have a really, really nice cushioned home!
My kitty has her own video, with birds, squirrels, etc. - sm
She gets a real kick out of it, especially the moths and the chipmunks. She always trys to reach out and grab the chipmunk!
Now that it's summer, though, I've got bird seed and hummingbird feeders outside the window, so she can watch the REAL THING all day long.
Star Trek!! Squirrels or Raccoons?

groundhogs, squirrels, wild turkeys, rabbits, raccoon, goat and deer meat..sm
Some folks just take for granted that they can walk into a market and shop for meat...We've done the same for similar reasons as you and nothing was wasted. At least you're self sufficient!!! And, I bet you've put up/canned/frozen all the vegetables from the summer/fall harvest.
Didn't mean to be flippant in my earlier post...whack it, hack it, pack it and stack it... Cat
