Has anyone else noticed food prices going SKY HIGH???
Seems like everything is outrageous anymore!!
Linda Chavez has great articles and makes a lot of sense.
This is long but I think worth it.
As if a housing crisis, rising energy costs and a soft labor market weren't enough to cause economic anxiety for the average American, now consumers are feeling the pinch of rapidly escalating food costs. The United States has long prided itself in being the breadbasket of the world, and Americans have traditionally paid a smaller share of their income on food than citizens of other developed countries. But the days of cheap milk, bread, beef and poultry may well be over — and Uncle Sam is partly to blame.
In 2007, the cost of a gallon of milk increased 26 percent; eggs went up 40 percent; and a loaf of white bread went from $1.05 to $1.28 from 2006 to 2008. Steep increases in the price of oil have contributed to these higher costs, but the federal government has played a pernicious role as well. By mandating that oil companies increase the amount of ethanol they blend with gasoline, the government has not only artificially increased the cost of corn, which is what most U.S. ethanol is made of, but has driven up the cost of other grains as well. Inflated corn prices encourage farmers to divert more acreage to corn, which means they plant less soy and wheat, which, in turn, drives the prices of those commodities up as well. The aggregate price of wheat, corn, soy oil and soy meal in the U.S. will be $61.7 billion higher in the 2007/2008 crop year than it was in 2005/2006.
Corn prices affect a host of other food prices as well. If you've ever looked at the ingredient labels on everything from bologna to canned tomato soup, you'll see that corn syrup is a common ingredient of many processed foods. Corn is also a common grain used in feed for cattle, poultry and hogs. As a result, prices for meat and poultry are going up, but even with higher prices, some companies in the meat industry still can't make a profit, and many are being forced to cut jobs and close plants. I've seen this firsthand as a member of the board of directors of Pilgrim's Pride, the nation's largest chicken producer, where we have already had to shut down one plant and close six distribution centers to cope with record losses directly attributable to soaring feed costs.
But what is most galling about the impact of government mandated ethanol production is that it does little or nothing to solve our energy problems.
Ethanol proponents argue that it is cleaner than petroleum — which improves air quality — and that it and other alternative fuels will reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Both claims are dubious.
Corn-based ethanol is inefficient as a fuel for automobiles, reducing vehicle gas mileage by 20-30 percent in vehicles using E85, the highest ethanol content fuel. Fewer miles-per-gallon of gas essentially eliminates any savings achieved, even by mixing ethanol with gasoline in the lower 9 percent ethanol blends required in all U.S. gasoline today. And of course, it also takes energy to produce ethanol — for farming and distilling the corn and transporting the final product to the pump — and much of that energy will come from carbon-based fuels.
None of these arguments has stopped the aggressive ethanol lobby from getting its way with Congress, however, and pressure increases in presidential election years as Iowa farmers encourage candidates to pledge allegiance to ethanol during the Iowa caucuses.
If ethanol really were the miracle fuel its proponents claim, you'd think there would be huge profits in producing it in the free market. But that's not the case. Consumers not only pay for ethanol at the pump, they're paying taxes as well to subsidize ethanol production in the U.S. — and they're paying a hidden tax to keep cheaper, foreign sugar cane ethanol from competing with the domestic corn-based product. Subsidies to gasoline blenders amount to about 51 cents per gallon, and the government imposes a 54-cent tariff on foreign ethanol so that it can't provide a cheaper alternative for U.S. consumers.
And matters will only get worse as government mandates higher bio-fuel content in U.S. gasoline from the current 9 percent to 15 percent by 2015. Ethanol won't solve the energy crisis, but it may well lead to a food crisis in the U.S. and elsewhere. The U.S. Agency for International Development reports that the cost of providing wheat, corn, cereal and other foodstuffs to poor nations has gone up 41 percent since October 2007, which will mean we can provide less assistance to starving people around the world. Federal policy is literally diverting food from the table to the gas tank — and it's time we stopped it.

The reason is high gas prices.
All that stuff is transported by truck... they run on gas...
Did you check out the profits the oil companies made last quarter?

it was suggested to me throughout this process that the cat could have a urinary tract infection. I guess it is common that they will use the litter box and other places if this is the case. You can buy litter that changes colors to see if there is an infection. It's very difficult to get a sample from them. I found the litter at Wal-Mart.

I used to have sugar and lots of it in my coffee, and I just couldn't stand the taste of the sweeteners but I gave it a try anyway. One day at the Dunkin Donuts I switched and asked for Equal in my coffee and now I don't use sugar at all. I even tried Splenda but didn't lose any weight for about two months and I was getting sugar lows. I switched back from Splenda to Equal and dropped seven pounds that week after not dropping anything for two months.

that he quit having his paycheck direct deposited into our joint account, and I had just sent a house payment, so now there's nothing left there. "His lawyer" (He also lied to me about hiring one.) supposedly told him he should be paying child support. That, to me means putting money in that account, even if he's not using it. It's in both of our names, so shouldn't we both be able to use it for stuff for the kids, if nothing else?
Tonight, his mom kept telling us it wasn't fair that he should have to come here to see the kids. She kept talking about how I "wasn't being fair" to him. Well, was it fair that I had to leave my home and my life because I couldn't stand to be treated that way anymore. I talked to a pastor about it even, who asked me why I didn't respect myself more (before we left) I told her the alternative sucked, too.
I don't really know what resources are available, but I am in counseling, so that has helped a lot.

When you live in a remote location, sometimes what they call off-grid living is actually cheaper.
Composting toilets can replace septic tanks, though not necessarily cheaper, just without hooking up to water supplies or requiring re-digging the hole in 10-20 years when the original septic reaches the end of its lifespan.
Solar water heater.
Solar or wind powered well pump.
Solar electricity for household power.
Propane tank and propane powered appliances.
Just some ideas for you.

I forgot to mention 2 other things
A screaming child cannot hear you if you whisper, so if you speak so softly they have to turn down their own volume to hear you, you get rewarded with some quiet. You can also tell them you can't hear them unless they speak quietly as well. When my GD is watching TV, talking over it and my headphones are in my ears, I about go nuts! I have started telling her lately that I need her to be quiet when my 'ears' are in so I can 'hear the voices in my head' LOL!
The other thing is talking about trust. "I want pancakes now!" and your response is "I'm in the middle of doing such and such...I can make pancakes for you tomorrow morning. Will you trust me to do that for you then?" Explain that trust means believing you will keep your word. That also works both ways. If you want good behavior on a shopping trip, talk about needing to trust him to behave on the trip and if he does, reward that trust.
I know that there is no one way to raise a child and you just have to do the best you can. Sounds like you have your plate full...I can SO relate to having to try different things. My little one has an oppositional defiant personality (sounds a bit like your 3 yo!) so it really does take trial and error to find a good balance. Best of luck to you. :)

I forgot to mention what the first study was about.
They had people wear clean white t-shirts for a day and then had people of the opposite gender sniff the shirts. They had to choose the shirts that smelled good. Then ALL the people got together and mingled. The result of the study indicated that people wound up singling out the owners of the shirts they found attractive.

It doesn't really make sense to call yourself a Christian if you deny what Christ himself said. H*ll does exist.
Also, if you really are asking what I mean to be saved, I will share. I does not mean adhering to a dogma. It means having recognized your own sinful nature and accepted Christ's death on the cross as having paid the price for your sin. That is what we mean when we say Christ died for us. We can live forever in paradise with him because God sacrificed his son, Jesus, on the cross, to take the place for each individual person so that they can live forever. Christ died so that I may live. Christ rose again and won victory over death.
Being saved is accomplished through faith in Christ.

I have followed your threads since they
first started a few days ago. I kept thinking about my brother and SIL. Their marriage was very much like yours. She would cringe when she heard his car pull in the driveway not knowing what kind of mood he would be in. Never physicaly abusive but definitely verbally abusive. My SIL was and is still my best friend so she told me lots and I grew up with my brother and know what kind of person he is. They finally divorced (after separating several times) after 14 years of marriage. It was the best thing for both as well as the children. It is not always easy to make the decision, my SIL talked about it for over 10 years before she finally did it, but am so glad she finally did.

power walking......see link here:
http://www.thewalkingsite.com/howtowalk.html
TIPS FOR WALKING FASTER1. Use good posture. Walk tall, look forward, (not at the ground) gazing about 20 feet ahead. Your chin should be level and your head up.
2. Keep your chest raised, and shoulders relaxed (shoulders down, back and relaxed). 3. Bend your arms in slightly less than a 90 degree angle. Cup your hands gently. Swing arms front to back (not side to side - arms should not cross your body.) Do not swing elbows higher than your sternum (breast bone). Swing your arms faster and your feet will follow.
4. Tighten your abs and buttocks.. Flatten your back and tilt your pelvis slightly forward.
5. Pretend you are walking along a straight line. Resist the urge to elongate your steps. To go faster -- take smaller, faster steps.
6. Push off with your toes. Concentrate on landing on your heel, rolling through the step and pushing off with your toes. Use the natural spring of your calf muscles to propel you forward.
7. Breathe naturally. As you walk, take deep, rhythmic breaths, to get the maximum amount of oxygen through your system. Walk fast enough that your breathing is increased yet you are not out of breath.
WALKING DON'TSCommon mistakes made by walkers... 1. Do not over stride
2. Do not use too vigorous arm movements
3. Do not look at the ground
4. Do not hunch your shoulders
5. Do not carry hand weights or place weights on your ankles
What is the difference in power walking, fitness walking, and racewalking?
Fitness walking is called by many different names - power walking, fitness walking, health walking. Power walking is commonly used to represent an exaggerated walking style. This style of overstriding and exaggerated arm movements is often linked with injuries. Because of this I don't generally use the term power walking. A better term for a healthful energetic walking pace is "fitness walking".
Fitness walking is much more than a stroll or nature walk. When fitness walking you incorporate the muscles of the upper body making it a GREAT aerobic activity. It burns approximately the same calories as running, yet it is much easier on the body. Because more muscles are used it burns calories much quicker than less aggressive walking. It also tones muscles in the buttocks, thighs, hips, shoulders, upper back and abs. Most fitness walkers average about 12 to 15 minutes per mile.
Unlike racewalking; there is no official definition. There are no rules. If you walk at a purposeful fitness walking pace using good technique you are a fitness walker. Use tips above to insure good walking form and to increase your pace.

predecessor to Jericho...
Review Summary
Originally produced by the BBC, Threads is a shattering speculative tale the onset of World War III, and the horrors of the post-apocalyptic society that struggles for survival. The film takes place in the ruins of Sheffield, a British working class town. Despite the fact that the world seems to be falling apart all around them, a young couple (Karen Meagher, Reece Meagher) intend to go ahead with their upcoming wedding. As the date draws near, however, simmering international tensions soon erupt into global thermonuclear war. In the devestation that follows, the apocalyptic erosion of society sends mankind hurtling back hundreds of years into an age where famine, strife, pestilence, and death wash over the land like an unrelenting flood of venomous bile. The central theme of the film seems to be that the adage "Life Goes On" just isn't good enough in a world doomed to a slow death by radiation. Without resorting to shock or sensationalism, this one makes The Day After and Testament look like kids' stuff. Though not picked up by any of the major American networks, Threads was widely distributed in the US through the auspices of cable mogul Ted Turner. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Happy to share. If you've ever had Hummingbird Cake, I have been told that this is a lot like that, without the spice (I think the spice would make it more like Carrot Cake, but not sure).
Pineapple Nut Cake
Preheat oven to 300 degrees
2 eggs
2 c. sugar
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. drained crushed pineapple
1 c. chopped pecans
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat eggs, sugar, and vanilla 'til sugar is dissolved. Add flour, baking soda, and pineapple. Add nuts and pour into greased/floured 13 X 9 pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 8-oz package cream cheese (softened)
1 stick butter (softened)
1-1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine all ingredients and mix well.
Hope you try it and like it! This is another thing that I could live on for days.

I try to look at it realistically. Cystic fibrosis is a pretty serious disease, one that usually attacks babies and young children. That's the tragedy. I'm 56 years old and didn't find out until I was 53. That's something I never heard of. The majority of my life has been good and healthy. One of my docs told me that first my pancreas will destroy itself, and then I'll become diabetic, (which is why I was so interested in what the poster down a little bit where she questioned about whether I might have diabetes. Once my pancreas is "gone," then my lungs will take over, and that's what will kill me. I haven't been coughing very much in the last 3 years, but now, for about 2 weeks, I can't stop coughing.
I feel ashamed to even be griping about this, considering those poor babies and young children who get this disease and die early.
Thank you very much for the compliment, but she isn't going to change. I'm waiting for this voucher program to go into effect (I've been accepted) so I can move out. I don't have a car, and I don't even have a phone. I have to depend on her to give me messages, and it's a 50%/50% chance whether I'll get those. I figure that I lost my apartment in PA, and as I got sicker, I lost my car and then my phone. So I'm trying like heck to get a phone. There's one that I like on Cricket; I've been watching it for a few months now, and the price sometimes goes down to $9.99. Unfortunately, this isn't one of those times! Maybe a couple of soup cans and a string??
I honestly don't know why my son-in-law stays with my daughter. She treats everyone badly. She even cheated on him a couple of years ago, so he is often guarded in his relationship with her.
My parents were very dysfunctional. My father especially was physically and verbally abusive. I remember taking my mom to the doctor's office to be scheduled for surgery because she had colon cancer.
When we got back to my parents' house, my father was lying on the couch, mean as usual, and told her, "You fat b***h, there's nothing wrong with you. You just want some attention." I looked at my mom, who didn't say a word -- just silent tears streaming down her face. Then I reamed him a new one.
A week later, she was dead.
My daughter knows nothing about my diseases because she's not interested in doing any research about it. If I come home from the doctor's and try to tell her what happened, she simply isn't interested in hearing it.
One one of my more serious hospitalizations (11 days), I had pneumonia and pancreatitis, she was especially nasty. She knew if I wasn't home working, I wasn't earning anything. So she called me and asked about when I would be paying the rent because if I don't, they'll get evicted, and it will all be my fault. Then she called later in the day, SCREAMING about my 15-year-old cat spraying all over the basement and making it stink and ordered me to get rid of it that day. I had no choice but to call the Humane Society, where I know nobody would adopt a 15-year-old cat. No doubt in my mind: That cat is dead. The best part is that the "stinking up the place" wasn't even my cat because it continued after she had me get rid of it. It was one of HER cats.
She reminds me of how my father treated my mother, and I need to get out of here ASAP because she's made it clear that I'm a burden and she wants me out. I try not to be a burden. I purchase and cook my own food (I'm not allowed to eat with the family, but I prefer it the way it is.)
Oh, sheesh! I've written a novel here and didn't mean to.
Thank you again, Linda, for th e kind words. I really appreciate them.

Prices!!!
Where I live(S. GA) too they get out early like 6 a.m. and are through by dinner or shortly after. Some advertise, some do signs and some both, just according to how hard you are to find. I think it is important to have a price on everything! That's my pet peeve. Some people won't ask if it is not priced. Don't set your prices too high. My mother gets upset that she cannot get her money out of something, especially if she bought it at a sale. I try to tell her some money is better than none. Her regular stuff we do at yard sale, other stuff we do on Ebay. Price big items where you might go down a little bit and smaller stuff where you might be willing to deal. If you will let a dresser go for 50 put 60 on it. The fun in buying is bartering with the seller for a deal. People will buy more if you give them a deal. I say quantity over quality. We go through and put a tag on our stuff the night before. You can find garage sale stickers prepriced at an office store or somewhere like Walmart, priced from .25 to $10 with blank tabs to. You can also get color coded ones and just make a poster board and say Green dot 0.25, Red dot .75, yellow $10, etc. this saves a lot of confusion and is easier to count up. Happy sales. Offer some cookies or cupcakes, keeps kids occupied while moms shop!
