prelit tree
I agree with the others, I love mine and will never, ever have an old tree again. We keep ours in the garage and have for the last 2 years, and it still works!
Our tree was not prelit but we don't take
the lights off now that they are on. We put up about 5 trees, all different sizes and my DH just puts them in the back of a pick up (without decorations) and puts them in a storage unit.
When do you buy your Christmas Tree? sm
What kind do you get and how tall do you get? We redid our living room over the summer and since then, at least once a month, I've walked around asking where we are going to put our tree (a big boxed tree that is a pain in the rear to put together and sheds about as many pine needles as a real one). I've decided (yesterday - haven't approached DH yet) that I'd like to try one of those tall skinny ones so I think that buying a real one this year would be better to try out before making the investment in a fake one that I might not care for.
One more question - any problems with your pets and a real tree?? Years and years ago, the guy at the tree lot swore up and down to me a specific tree (can't remember what kind now) that cats will stay out of - yeah right!! My cats still managed to drag that tree halfway through my apartment! LOL
Christmas Tree
Real and anywhere from 8-1/2 to 12 feet tall depending on where we put it in our family room. It's up and decorated since Saturday.
Christmas Tree & Decorations
We always try to have the tree lit up and the decorations out on display by Thanksgiving day. I think having a fake tree makes that possible.
Do you set a deadline to have the tree up and decorated by Thanksgiving week? If not, when do you try to have it finished?
Do you put up your Christmas tree at Thanksgiving for guests/yourself
s
We're out-of-step, I think. Tree up just before Christmas.
I grew up in a large Italian immigrant community many years ago. (Not telling exactly HOW many years! :)
I loved the old customs, and that's what I stick to. In the "old country" it was about the nativity display in the house, not so much the tree. But we did have a tree that went up usually on Christmas Eve, and it came down on "Little Christmas", in January, on the Feast of the Epiphany. Leading up to Christmas, we celebrate advent and keep an advent wreath on the main table and light candles each night. We still get a real tree, and we put it up just a few days before Christmas, but it stays bare until Christmas Eve. On that night, we have a big meal which includes seven seafood dishes, then decorate the tree, go to church, and come back and eat some more. I love the food!
Sometimes it's really hard to put everything off, because it just seems that decorations go up right after Thanksgiving, and come down the day after Christmas (which is my birthday, by the way.) But I like doing just what I did with my family when I was growing up.
A crazy person and Christmas tree magic....
We just don't do a christmas tree because it's just my husband and I. However, when I visited my brother a couple of years back, he had a real Christmas tree he cut down from his own property. That thing smelled just magical. His wife and kids decorated it with the simplest of ornaments, colored lights, popcorn and cranberry garland, a red tree skirt, and those awesome silver "icicles" that captured the light light diamonds.
Well, I saw that tree and suddenly I was 6 again. I got down on the floor, flipped over onto my back, and scooted under that tree right up to the stump and stared up. Everyone thought I was nuts but it was just...magical. Next thing I know, my two nephews (almost teenagers) joined me and were also struck silent. They had never done that before! My brother and his wife joined in on the weirdness and said they had never looked at their tree from the floor, as if they were a kid again.
It's such a simple thing and I couldn't believe that they never did that! Time just stops when you look up through the boughs of your Christmas tree, with all the decorations and sparklies, and all your troubles are washed away so long as you stay under there looking up.
So, yeah, if you have a tree, try that. The spirit will come back to you--I promise! If not, get a glass and fill it 1/4 of the way with egg nog, then backfill with 3/4 spiced rum and pound it down your gullet--in about 10 minutes the magic will be found.
POLL: Real or artificial Christmas tree in your house?
Two years ago we bought an artificial Christmas tree and we absolutely love it. We finally got tired of paying upwards of $100 for a dead tree that was dried out in two weeks. We got a good deal on ours and I have to say we have really enjoyed it. It's 10 feet tall which we could never afford to buy a 10 footer every year. I do miss the nice smell of a real tree, though. We put it up today...that's another nice thing: you can put it up early and not worry about it drying out before Christmas.
Schefflera/umbrella tree/ octopus tree
are deadly to cats/kittens as well.
Fake tree or real tree? Big or small?...sm
How about one of those old Evergleam aluminum trees with a color wheel? Wish mommy hadn't gotten rid of ours, darn it.
Copy and paste this link into your browser and enjoy! Cat

Too funny - there's an add above for prelit trees!
Anyhoo, I got mine at Penney's last year, first artifical one I've ever had. I love it. It's beautiful, convenient. I thought I'd miss the smell of a real tree but there are so many beautiful candles now (Yankee Candles are my fave) or tart warmers - Mistletoe, etc, that make the whole house smell soooo good!
What are people supposed to call Christmas Eve and Christmas Day now?? (nm)

Home Alone 1, A Christmas Story, Home for the Holidays, Chevy Chase's Christmas, sm
There "The Gift of the Magi," He sells his gold watch to buy her a comb for her hair and she sells her beautiful long hair to buy him a chain for his gold watch. It used to be on "Short Stories by O'Henry" but that's long gone, long ago. Good moral to the story. I can't stand "It's a Wonderful Life" -- too depressing, especially with banks closing, too intimidating right now!!!
Is your Tree up?
My Christmas tree won't go up till way closer to Christmas. We always get a real one. I know some people love to put theirs up right after Thanksgiving day! Some of us wait it out a bit longer.
When do you put your tree up? Real or Fake?
X-mas tree
We put up tree 2-3 weeks before Xmas. Kids are 17 and 15 now and don't get as excited about it anymore. Last year, DD's friend who is Jewish helped decorate. She had so much fun because she has never done it before that it made it fun for all of us again.
And you know, the tree and the egg nog
Had LOTS to do with it :)... you can turn even the crabbiest HumBug scrooge into a rum-drinkin, holiday singin fool! And I appreciate that tons....:) Thanks.
Here is my Tree ...

Our Tree
It's way too small for the space, but we got it when we were in a smaller house with lower ceilings. I still like it though. Took this before I got all the presents wrapped.

Real Tree
We just put our tree up today. A 10 footer that we paid $35 for which I thought was a great deal. We used to have an artificial tree until our cat started eating the needles (she won't touch the real needles). She got really sick (the needles stayed in her stomach) and she had to have an emergency operation. No more artificial tree from then on.
Real tree
I'll never do fake.
real tree
not bought, but hunted for; we love the smell of cedar throughout the house!
First fake tree ever!
I put it up last night and I have to say, it's quite impressive! Lots of lights, nice shape, easy to put together and even has a remote control to switch the lights on and off. I miss the smell of a real tree but not the mess.

I am interested in buying a home. The banks here want at last 20% down. I am just wondering what other options I have.

Education of Little Tree?
I did not see the View, but I do own this book and loved it. It supposedly was an autobiography by Forest Carter, but turns out he made the whole thing up, which ended up being a really disappointed me as I found the characters so real. I live in the mountains of WNC and am part Cherokee. Good to hear that your kids are into tribal life.
Artificial tree
My MIL has a table top artificial tree that she decorated around 10 years ago. At the end of each holiday season, she covers it with a sheet and puts in the back of the closet. I don't know if the lights even work anymore or if she changed them at some point. It is just really funny every year when we get it out of the closet, take off the sheet, and voila! grammy is ready for another xmas.
We always put our tree up the day after Thanksgiving. sm
we all sing-a-long Christmas songs to CDs while we decorate. I can't stand putting them up until after Thanksgiving. I have to close one holiday before i move onto the next, lol.
The other tradition i started with my kiddos is they always get to open ONE present on Christmas eve. that one present is always and will always be PJs. when they were little and i looked back on our Christmas pictures, i realized they were in whichever PJs they went to bed in. so then i decided every year to get them PJs for a gift so everyone looks nice for pictures the next morning.

Hayseed you brought back the sweetest memory. Had a little lhasa apso named Blondie. One year the tree went up, got decorated, etc. Hours went by with no sign of Blondie. More time passed, no Blondie.. Started calling her name, looking from room to room, then looking outside for her. Nowhere in sight. About 1/2 hour later I just happened to go under the tree and there she was, laying on the green tree shirt and looking up at the lights. She spent about another hour like that and finally came out. It was the sweetest thing I ever saw........
You left one out ----- NO tree.

Real tree...sm
I like tall and thin, but DH likes big and fat. This year, it's kinda tall and fat.
Education of Little Tree
GREAT BOOK!! I passed my book around to my friends and they all loved it too. My aunt even bought a couple as gifts to others. Easy read and very enjoyable.
Pic of our Maple Tree
It's just about ready to lose the leaves.
Our tree is undecorated until 12/24.
Maybe it's more a European thing. (My grandparents were immigrants and we lived with them.) Or it's more of a Catholic thing, but we observe the season of advent leading up to Christmas. We decorate the tree on Christmas Eve day, light it after midnight, and then observe the Christmas season through "Little Christmas" on January 6. Then all the decorations come down. A few of our neighbors do the same, but it seems that most people start Christmas at Thanksgiving and then have everything down the day after.
I do have a selfish reason for enjoying the Christmas season, which is that my birthday is 12/26, and I LOVE having Christmas decorations up on my birthday! People with "normal" birthdays in the middle of the year don't get to do that!
We got our tree today
We went to a tree farm, took a tractor ride and cut down our tree. We have 12 foot high ceilings and usually get a 12 foot tree, but this year we put it at the other end of the family room, and we got an 8-1/2 footer.
We used to have a fake Christmas tree up until about 8 years ago or so when our cat began eating all the fake pine needles. Long story short she ate so many she had to have emergency surgery to remove them (she wasnt' able to pass them) and $1,500 later we decided no more fake trees. She's no longer with us, but when she was younger she would climb in the tree and actually knocked it over one year. We had to anchor it to the wall. Our other cat never really bothered the tree except batting around ornaments at the bottom. He's been over sniffing it today, but hasn't paid much attention to it over the past few years.
Love your tree -- I am a big UK fan so that

kitty's own tree..
I think that's a great idea!
Combined with the squirt gun when he tries messing with the big tree.. love this idea!
...and if he/she destroys the little tree, you can likely buy a replacement after the holidays for next to nothing!
Happy Holidays!
This will be the first year I might buy an artificial tree
with lights because I'm tired of fighting with the lights every year (both putting on and taking off) and I'm also sick of the mess of pine needles the real tree leaves as it dries out. Also my pets seem to like to drink the water in the tree stand which makes them quite ill - too much bother all around. Lastly - cost! Trees around here are $40 and up for a decent one.
REAL tree . . also nebraska MT (SM)
We just donated our artificial one to the school to place in the hallway; hunting down a real tree is the kickoff to our family Christmas!!! It's a special event every year.
I think he also fell out of a palm tree while

The Apple Does Not Fall Far From the Tree
I agree with you, Unhappy Camper -
There is little accountability in today's youth as a whole. The kids that are responsible, that know the consequences and live accordingly are the minority. Teens in the military are taught accountability and responsibility if they don't already have those attributes courtesy of their parents.
Interesting article I read in my hometown paper about an underage drinking party where over 25 kids were arrested for illegal possession of alcohol. One of the cops interviewed said out of the 25 parents that had to come and pick up their children, only one, ONE, told their child they got exactly what they deserved and that consequences would result. The others were mortified that their kids were being held, humiliated, and treated like criminals, then berated the cops for having nothing better to do, etc. We wonder why there are problems? The kids want the privileges of being an adult, but not the responsibility, thanks to mom and dad. One cop summed it up precisely. He said when he was a teen, he and his friends did not fear getting caught by the police, they were more afraid of getting caught by their parents.
As a result of such parenting, or lack thereof, it would bother me to see the drinking age lowered. If they don't hold their kids accountable, how can we by allowing the age to be lowered?
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn...........

well I have the feeders hanging in a tree
but now that the leaves are gone, he has full view and can take his pick. He must realy like the finches, because he has been picking them off my finch sock and practically taking the sock and all (must get his toenails caught). I feel bad, because I feel I'm luring the birds out to the feeders and then they're actually becoming a meal themselves. Maybe I will look into planting some holly bushes or something thick that stays all winter and he can't get into. May not look too pretty in my front yard though. I don't know what else to do.
I used to do that when I was a kid - the tree part, not the eggnog - LOL! nm

Forgot to say we have a real tree
We have vaulted ceilings so this year we have a 10 footer, the year before it was almost 12 feet.
Here are a couple of my boys under the tree
I have 3, but don't know where the third one was. He was probably playing in the box we kept all the ornaments in! Also have a German shepherd who won't fit under the tree!
Bear ate Santa off the tree...now he's...sm
eaten/torn up the ottoman? He probably does miss you a lot Misha....It's a long day without mommy. Cat
