I think you've got the right idea. The best way to avoid this situation is just to cease sending gifts at all. I know it may sound harsh, but if it's not appreciated, why go through the trouble and expense? I've been to 2 weddings since July and have yet to receive any thank you for my gifts. We have another one tomrrow to attend and we will go and we will give a gift, but I thoroughly do not expect a thank you.
BTW, I just ordered my DD's graduation invites and along with them, I ordered thank you cards...you can bet your bottom dollar that she will be sitting down and making them out and sending them herself. My mom is a stickler about this, so I have naturally become the same way. It's just plain respectful, which our society today is severely lacking in...R-E-S-P-E-C-T...find out what it means to me...
