For all intents and purposes, they ARE free gifts. -sm
Like all those 'charitable organizations' that keep sending me printed address stickers. Fine - they can send me all the stickers they want! (Or holiday card samples). I keep them and use them. Doesn't mean they deserve any money, because they didn't have the consideration to ASK me first whether or not I wanted to receive them.
And the newspapers are really getting desperate for subscriptions these days. The Times has been calling me nearly every month, (usually during dinner, or breakfast) to solicit a subscription. Usually all it takes is one, TRUE sentence: 'Sorry, but I get ALL my news over the internet theses days. Anything else is yesterday's news.' That usually shuts 'em up.
One lady who just wouldn't take 'no' for an answer said as a 'free gift' she'd send me a 6-week subscription to their newspaper that I didn't want, nor have time to read. I cheerily told her, 'Cool! I can line my cat litter boxes with them!' End of conversation, and no 6-week subscription.
I know #s are engraved on the diamond "saddle" for ID purposes.
