When I first started asking about this my little sister sent me the following link with the learn what you are dealing with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth and
MT Bold'>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_music
Now from my personal experience. My daughter went through a really rough stage in sixth-seventh grades. She felt like an outsider, had no friends, was not in any sports at the time and pretty much went to school and came home. Sounds like a good kid doesnt it. I wasnt happy with the changes in apparel and such but when I threw a fit it got worse (much worse). Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo after some talk with my sister who is eight years younger and much hipper ( you know single no kids lives in New York and works in theater). I got my daughter reinvolved in her sports and dance she started associating with "normal" kids. She has never really gotten over this "goth" thing but am proud to say that my daughter has graduated this year to "EMO". The music is somewhat tolerable. Even though she is a freshman this year she actually dresses pretty well (except that she wears converse (chucks) 24/7) I have even seen her wear PINK in the last month.
My suggestion to you is dont fight it but find a happy compromise. There are "goth" acceptable clothes that are not unacceptable to most parents you can agree that the makeup needs to lighten but concede to allow a fake brow or lip ring????? work with her instead of fighting it and when its no longer such a huge deal it seems to loose its appeal
Good luck and stay in touch.

Emo/Goth
The term emo is new to me; I'm 24 years old. I hate putting a label on music, as I like all kinds, and it's really frustrating to tell someone you like a certain band and have them say, "Oh you're so emo," or something equally lame.
I don't know how goth your child is going, i.e., white makeup, colorful or raven black hair, chains, etc...but I still "experiment" with my look and Hot Topic is a favorite of mine. Working from home, I don't really have to worry about appearances and Lord knows I'm white enough that I don't need that white makeup and black eyeshadow or nail polish, but I know you must be pretty concerned. She's probably just expressing herself and it will pass over time. However, I do think it wouldn't hurt if her friends and/or activities were to be monitored a bit.
Good luck!

My son went through this, complete with mohawk, wore any color as long as it was black, long black trench coat, etc. The summer that he graduated high school he started wearing other colors, listening to different music, etc. It will pass.
