While trying to get out of the "hole" it supposedly causes an orgasm. Please don't ask how I know....cause I wish I didn't.

Gerbils sm
My kids just got 3 gerbils for Christmas.  They got the whole kit and caboodle with large cage with a slide, all kinds of cute tunnels and a running wheel.  Since Christmas, they have chewed the whole bottom of the slide off which is plastic.  Most of the cage is plastic and they have chewed big chunks out of everything.  I bought a "wooden" tunnel that is edible for them to chew on.  I think they would honestly rather eat the plastic.  Do you know if this will hurt them?  I am not finding little bits of plastic everywhere when we clean the cage, so I can only assume that they are eating it.  What the heck?  Do you have any suggestions?
re: gerbils
I would suggest getting a 10 gallon aquarium cage with a wire mesh cover from either Walmart or pet store. Gerbils chew alot more than hamsters and the tunnels are cute for hamsters, but gerbils really are happier in an aquarium cage with recycleable bedding in the bottom, a wheel, water bottle, igloo house and food. They really don't need the tunnels and will chew anything that is plastic or cardboard. There are wire mesh wheels that work great for them in the pet store and their igloo house is good. So far mine have not chewed the plastic wheel I have or the igloo house, but this remains to be seen! Eventually they will chew through the plastic cage so I would get a glass 10 gal aquarium cage for them. Or a bigger aquarium with a screen/wire mesh cover. They really don't need a ton of space. They also like to chew on cardboard tissue paper tubes and paper towel to make their nests.

Lemme know what happens!
