My stepdad is doing the same thing to my mother. They have been married 25 years. She is still in denial. I worry for her because she can retire in 2 years and I worry that she will have nothing to retire on due to him spending such large amounts of money. I have been trying for 2 years to get her to at least consult with a lawyer to find out where she would be financially because he has secret bank accounts and money stashed in different places. I hope your mom has more of a backbone than my mom and not just sit back and take it. Good luck to you and your mom.

Sometimes one starts to think of days gone by, and perhaps of a situation where a grudge was formed comes to mind. Thankfully, all that is needed is a nudge to get them out of that grudge-rut. Blondie, my heart goes out to you. While I have never been in your situation, I can almost feel the pain via your words. I hope and pray that your father "comes to his senses" and realizes that he is hurting his family something terrible!

You sound like a very good person, very caring. I was in the same situation once with a neighbor's dog. He would go to Canada hunting and just leave his dog tied to a dog house in mid-winter in New England and I would take her into my home, feed her, keep her warm and all. This neighbor today I can say with full confidence was borderline-retarded without a doubt. I am so glad I did this. I even at one time went to the dog pound and claimed this dog who had gotten loose and said it was my own. I could not let this poor dog suffer because of its owner. All I can say is do what is in your heart, it may cost you a few dollars more but think of it is abandoned children and you are there for them. Take a good look at this guy and truly ask yourself is he is capable of the love and caring you have in your heart. I know times are tough, but perhaps you are the one who is meant to save these poor animals. Sounds like this guy is either not the sharpest tool in the shed or something else wrong with him. Does he have enough money for beer or etc., and not his dogs? Then he doesn't deserve them! Think hard about the dogs and what would happen to them if it were not for you. You are a very nice person. I hope you find an answer. As for your husband, only you can answer that question. I think he should at least stick up for you and address his dumb friend as to what his responsibility is in the situation. Good luck, Blondie, you are a sweetheart to put up with all this, and I am sure the dogs are in a better place with you. Do you have an SPCA or someone who could help with the food? Perhaps online you can find a way to make your own food suitable for dogs at a reasonable price. May God be with you. Perhaps you are meant to care for dogs in some way that would be beneficial to you in other ways. God bless you for caring.

I could not own a pitbull because...
my husband is in the Navy and we move a lot; therefore, we end up renting houses a lot and nobody's insurance would allow it. While I am not convinced that they are all mean, I do think that they require a little more vigilance than other dogs, purely because of perception.
I don't have a pitbull personally
But I do know that they can be well-tempered. A lot of the time, the problem is having more than one. Dogs have a pack mentality and if one decides to bite, it sets the others off and they tend to join in and things escalate.
That is such a terrible, sad story. What a horrible way to go.

The statistics which appear to show a high rate of attacks due to alleged “pit bull-type dogs” are full of inaccuracy simply because any dog that can pass for a “pit bull” will be called a “pit bull” by the media.
And yes, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are often referred to by the slang term “pit bull,” but were these the actual breeds responsible for the attacks? Probably not since a slew of other breeds of dog — like Presa Canarios, Cane Corsos, Spanish Alanos, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Bandogs, Dogues Brasileiros, Dogo Argentino, Guatemalan Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Boxers, Bull Mastiffs, Bull Terriers, English Bulldogs, and even Labradors, Rottweilers, Akitas, and Chow Chows — have also been labeled “pit bulls.” Statistics are inaccurate because they are not based on “reliable breed-specific population data”
Still, it is a testament to the quality of the breed that even though many are unsocialized, tortured, and otherwise ill-used, very few are human-aggressive. I hesitate even to include abuse as a factor since even when they are abused most bullies are incredibly friendly and loving towards humans. You can thank over a hundred years of proper breeding for this trait.
There is no scientific evidence that one breed of dog is more vicious than another.
Pitbull Attack!?!?
This is a newspaper clipping from an attack that happened locally. When you read it you think to yourself "Oh my gosh! another pitbull attack" and it sounds like it is the dog's fault right? It is pretty convincing. THIS is what the public reads. What you DON'T KNOW is that the owner of this dog was training this dog to be mean, yes even with him having kids he was training the dog to be mean. And you ask how do I know this? It's because I was at the vet's office when they brought this dog in & this wasn't the first time they had a problem with this owner training dogs to be mean, and this was out of the vet's mouth himself. So because of this owner's training that he wouldn't admit to doing sadly there was a dog attack as a result and the dog had to be put down, but yet everybody will go on thinking "oh another vicious pitbull".
PitBull's are misunderstood...
Instead of focusing narrowly on only your dislike of PitBulls, why don't you look at the bigger picture as a whole...
First of all, the statistics on "fatal attacks"...well it doesn't take a genius to realize that a big strong dog like a PitBull or a Rottweiler is going to do a heck of a lot more damage if it bites you then, for example, a Beagle or Chihuahua would. But that still doesn't mean PitBulls are more likely to bite...
The statistics that I have read regarding breed specific likelyhood of biting have shown that small dogs (and mixbreeds) are way more likely to be aggressive towards humans and other dogs. Specifically Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and Jack Russell Terriers to name a few. PitBulls were more likely to show aggression to unfamiliar dogs. I've seen this info a few times, but the most recent website I found it on was here:

Our Country was not founded on the restriction and punishment of the masses based on the actions of a few.
Focusing legislation on dogs that are "vicious" distracts attention from the real problem, which is irresponsible owners.
These very breeds as a whole have proven their stability and good canine citizenry by becoming 'Search & Rescue' dogs, Therapy dogs working inside hospitals, professional Herding dogs and family companions for years.
Banning the so-called dangerous breed will merely hasten the upswing in popularity of some other breed that will be used for vicious attacks on people and other animals.
There is no valid reason to deprive animal lovers of their well behaved pets.
The reports and statistics are flawed. Among other things, a dog bite victim is usually unable to identify the breed of dog that bit him or her. Therefore, victims will name the type of dog that currently is on people's minds as being the dangerous dog.

A dog came out of nowhere and stopped a knife-wielding robber from accosting a mother and her young son on Monday afternoon. (Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson)
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."
The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.
The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.
Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.
"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.
"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."
The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.
"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."
After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.
The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."
Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.
"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.
For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.
"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.
For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.
The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.
"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."
Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

My cat Dante only lived 11 years. I believe he had multiple strokes, but vets could find nothing definite. In the last 3 months of his life, he cried loudly all night, had staring spells. But in the last month of his life he seemed to want to squeeze into tight spaces, between bookcase and wall, and one night he jumped up on the kitchen counter and then down behind the fridge. My bedroom was behind that wall and I heard him jump down, and my daughter and I got up and pulled the fridge out, I brought him to my bed. My younger daughter took him to her vet, but still no diagnosis. He just faded away one long Saturday afternoon, wrapped in a baby blanket in my daughter's arms. He was my "little man," and came to work in my office faithfully every day. I will say a prayer for you Hayseed, I know you are sick at heart. (Hugs)

My grandma watched, my mom watched, I think I watched in the womb. I was hooked by 6th grade and I still watch when I can get away from the computer, I try to at least catch the last 20 minutes to keep up. Sami and Lucas have been almost married so many times, it is boring. I love that they brought back Steve and Kayla, some of my faves from back in the day!!

Family does last forever and it's not
about whether you do something that upsets your child. It's the fact that you prioritze a non-family member's feelings over your own daughter's. As for the girl throwing herself at the boy, the boy obviously caught her and should have had enough decency not to be caught under the covers with her in a house he is being permitted to stay in. It works both ways.
This isn't about being a parent or a friend. It's about choosing your own daughter over a non-family member. I personally would not have left the 18-yo boy live in my house with my 16-yo daughter, regardless of the daughter's BF. I agree with the other poster that stated it's just too much temptation, even if they do supposedly act like brother/sister. I have a feeling this is just the beginning of the problems you will have to endure.

said long term HRT is a thing of the past, which I didn't know. Now, they only give them for 3-6 months. Mine went away for a couple of months, but back again, 15-20 a day, but no night sweats. I thought this stuff only lasted a year or so.
Well, if I am it is unintentional - I know they won't live forever (sm)
and I don't want to have regrets. I know one day if I have grandchildren I will want them to spend time with me. But I think I would be hurt to know they were crying not to spend time with me, and I would think if I knew that, I would try to spend time with them in other ways until they were happy and comfortable being with me. I have many friends whose children bounce up and down with joy over going to stay with their grandparents and I would love for it to be that way with mine.

Good heavens, it's been forever, but...
... let's see, I left high school typing class (gulp) 39 years ago doing 52 wpm on a big ol' MANUAL typewriter that was bigger than a breadbox....
In 1980 I had to quit my first full-time MT job (back in the typewriter days) because I developed tendinitis in my wrists. After 2 months of not typing at all, I went to a temp agency to get some work because not eating is a bad way to live. They gave me the usual typing test. On an unfamiliar typewriter, typing unfamiliar material, not having typed for 2 months, feeling like I was CRAWLING, I clocked in at 104 wpm. (No wonder I burned out my wrists.)
Now we have ergonomics, expanders, tools and toys, and I have NO idea how fast I type, although when I bother to concentrate and not goof off, I can consistently and easily go at least 200 LPH.
Expect if you Google typing speed tests, you might find something. If you have the kind of Expander that works under the OS as opposed to the platform, you can even try a speed test using your expander, at least, just for the fun of it.... :)

That's one of my dad's favorite sayings. He's a retired sheet metal fabricator. I had a plastic wheelbarrow that got a hole in it when loading it with wood to stack back in my prairie-woman days. He took a square piece of sheet metal, riveted it to the plastic, much like your chair, and 15 years later I am still using that wheelbarrow!
Carrying on here, but I just think this is so neat: When I moved in to my house I was lacking cabinet space. The kitchen had one of those closets with an ironing board in it. My father opened the closet and said "you ever gonna use this?" I only iron for weddings/funerals so I said no, had no need for it. He took the ironing board out, made 6 stainless steel shelves with 90 degree bent ends and drilled them into the cabinet. Canned goods and spices are now in there.
Sorry. Went from chairs to ironing boards. I am avoiding work today.

you were VERY kind to leave it there and take care of it for six months. So ridiculous that people gave you a hard time. I'm sorry that happened to you! Bad enough that you have to know something so awful happened in front of your home without a constant reminder and strangers coming up to your house all the time. And it is not your job to maintain it for them. If the family understood, then certainly no one else should have any say whatsoever.
Unless you stay on it forever, you will regain any weight you lose.
People I used to work with went on that diet once. Weight loss varied (nobody lost a lot, just a couple of pounds) and nobody kept it off.

Cat Owner (lol) here..
She likes to lay under my desk, and once in a while during the day when the kids are at school, she hops up on her hind legs and taps me on the arm with her paw just to say "hey, I'm still alive here, ya' gonna type all day or pet me a while?" She meows to get my attention. But then of course, I'd love to be her sometimes. She can just curl up anywhere, anytime and take a long, long nap! I'm so jealous! She wakes us all up in the morning meowing for something to eat. Poor thing last night... I poured the milk into her bowl, left it on the counter, and went upstairs to tuck the kids in, and she's just following me to their bedrooms meowing away. I didn't know what her problem was, and when I went downstairs again, lo and behold I hadn't put the darn bowl of milk down for her. I wonder if she'll turn me in for abuse? What a tease that was for her I'm sure.

Congratulations on your new "child". I have two cats of my own. It sounds like you have everything set for your cat while you're gone. I do all of the same things, with the exception of the radio/TV. I've left my cats alone for a week at at time for vacations and they do just fine. It's like they get a vacation too, away from my 3-1/2 year old. LOL.

 How about feeding him one of the lower calorie/fat cat foods? You could probably feed him the same amount and he wouldn't be taking in as many calories. Did you ever try using a laser light? If he likes it, he'll run up the walls! Hope this helps.

Do any of you feel that the monthly one-spot flea and tick preventions are hazardous to your pets' health?
Between my best friend and me, we had 6 dogs. Since June, 3 of them developed cancers, 2 of whom died. The common denominator is Frontline. Her dog was only 4, and my 2 were 10 and 8. Her dog had a leiomyosarcoma. Mine had squamous cell sarcoma and the other had undifferentiated giant cell sarcoma. We both live in Florida where fleas and ticks can be a big problem.
Two other friends claim they don't give their dogs these preventatives because they were told they were poisonous to dogs, the advice coming from holistic vets.
What are your thoughts and experiences, and where do you live?

How about a pillar candle tied up in tulle with a gorgeous bow? (If you can't make a bow, these are available in stores.) She won't care that you didn't spend a lot, but love you for thinking about her. Or, even less expensive, make her a batch of homemade candy or cookies and present them in a pretty tin - everyone likes to get homemade goodies.
It is my understanding that the owner of the --sm
property has the right to ask anyone to leave. It is their property and they do not OWE you to live there, even if you have been there all your life. If you are paying less rent than the average renter, I can see why he is doing this. You may be a good tenant, but everything, these days, comes down to dollars and cents. He may not have to do too much to "renovate," but he can get a much bigger price in rent. I really don't think you have a leg to stand on and I am sorry for your situation, but the owner can do anything they want to with their property.

Their pitbull to wander around public. That is why we have attacks. Owners should be responsible and keep them as well as any dog in a fenced in yard. Or if out in public on a leash. Mine will never be wandering around in public on its own. That is totally irresponsible. If I saw a pitbull out in public I would be cautious myself.
The fence did not cause the dog to die. The owner did by not making sure
the batteries were changed on a regular basis. The fence and the dog are blameless. The only one who had any control over the situation dropped the ball....poor dog.

Not arguing about the right for a business owner--sm
to refuse service to anyone, but, according to the article I read, OJ and his group came into the restaurant, sat in the back and were not causing a problem. The owner had the problem, as one of the waitresses was *giddy* that OJ was there. He specifically stated he asked OJ to leave because he did not like what OJ had done (in the past). To me, that is discrimination. He was not causing a problem. It was the owner of the restaurant who had a problem. But that is just my opinion.
I just do not think it is right that a place that is *open to the public* can ask someone to leave just because they do not like that person. If OJ had been causing a problem, that would have been different, but he was not. It was all the owners feelings about the man. that's all.
However, this thread is taking an ugly turn and since I have said all I have wanted to say on the subject, I am backing out now. Have a good day.
