Even though I hated her for it at the time, I feel differently now. My mom had us do things that mortified us - chopping a ring around a tree to put poison in it and plant a different type of tree next to it - going to 'pick your own' vegetable farms - moving a pile of rocks from one place to another (and then to another because she decided she didn't like the new spot) - even doing a chapter a day from our math books, or else - loaning us out to neighbors for unpaid labor - It kept us busy, our mouths too dry to complain (too much) and sleeping like the dead at night. I hated that smile of hers while we were doing it, too...
