My dog did this last winter as well. He actually cut the whole pad off besides one little piece hanging by a string. The vet cut that off. We had to apply neosporin, a gauze pad which we taped around his foot, and then used vet wrap with extra tape around it. You must keep it dry so that the new tissue can heal. He is an outside dog so we had to keep him in so he could stay dry. I would say it probably took about a good 2-3 months before it healed up. Now his was really bad. I don't know how bad your dog's foot is.
