So none of you are bothered by opening an umbrella in the house, a broken mirror, or knock on wood?

Never bothered.
Been doing this for 17 years, self-employed, IC, and employee; and it has never come up.
Not bothered by this or much of anything
but I not only use soap and water but also deodorant on the mons- have done it for years. With exception of legs and head, any other hair bearing areas I use deodorant.
I too am bothered with this.
I self-diagnosed my own self with hypothyroidism as I had all the classic symptoms, went to the doctor and told him to run the tests for it. I had severe itching day and night, cold, sitting in a warm house under covers, dry skin, and so on. The tests turned out to be over the top and immediately set up for endocrine evaluation the same day by my PCP. That was in the late 80s, took Synthroid but did a job on hair loss, on armour thyroid now but does not seem to have made that much difference. My temperature runs lower than most as metabolism runs slower and weight gain, I would like to know how to keep that under control. I had heard of 2 others that had same and once their medication adjusted, they lost the weight. No such luck here. I sometimes just get totally exhausted but even just lying down for awhile will get me back on track. Mine does stay within normal range but, of course, have to get the tests run at least yearly to make sure the thyroid dosage is enough. I now take about 125 mcg a day, started off small and as years progressed the dosage has gone up.
Obviously it bothered some of them
You said some of the people joked about writing the whole thank you note. I believe they were being sarcastic. It's in poor taste and good manners dictate that you write and address your OWN thank-you notes.

BTW, if you had bothered to read the post just above this
snide response from you, I stated that I was working full time.  I was not sitting home doing nothing.
Been to fairs, but the livestock/animal thing has always bothered me
and why I don't like to go. Looking at them and knowing how these kids took care of them and that most of them are going to be someone's dinner is upsetting to me :(
