It could be abuse, but not necessarily - my family has a hx of this. Numerous children have been bedwetters, including myself and my son. Mine did not stop until around 15, my son around the same age. Numerous physicians have said not everyone's nervous system develops in the same way and that this would eventually correct itself. It did. I was not abused, nor was my son. Many cousins same problem. All are fine now. On the other hand, if you suspect abuse, always err on the side of caution. I feel for your family - such a hardship on all concerned, adults as well as the little ones being split up. We have similar here. Hope 2008 brings some peace and joy to the kids and to you.

bedwetting
I was taught in RN classes that bedwetting can be caused by a bladder that is too small for a child's age. I'd get him checked for that, especially because of the comment about his sisters saying he's been doing that for a time--althought continued stress even before this incident could have caused it. Even this evaluation might make him fess up if something abusive is going on. If he fears the examination, it could be a clue.
If you suspect abuse, do all you can to prevent it of course. Get the courts behind you if you need to. Call a shelter and ask what to do, how to go about it. Follow your gut. Maybe a counselor could find out what's going on. He's been through a lot.
My mother wet her bed every night after my father became terminally ill. The stress was too much for her. She had never wet her bed in her lifetime but every night she woke up about 3 AM and had to change the sheets completely. Once my father died, she never wet the bed again, even when she was 89.
