They are battery-powered and you can set different levels of shock. It's just like a static-electric shock and freaks them out. Cats are smart, so you have to disguise the scat mat a piece of fabric. However, this would basically teach the cat to stay off the couch, which probably isn't what you want - no more snuggle time on couch. Alternatively, you could put furniture covers on until he/she learns to use a scratching post or something.
