You could test your father's soil and your soil and see how they compare, pH wise. You can play with the pH using sulfur or lyme if it isn't the color you want. They say the change takes time, though.

What zone are you in? Do you know the variety of hydrangea? Besides the 2 blue ones, which are Nikko blue, I have a dwarf pink one that has never bloomed (just moved it to try to improve conditions) and a white one, which stopped blooming after a couple of great years. My soil has a pH of like 8, so I am always trying to lower it. Also my shade is too deep and my soil a bit too dry, but I'm trying to get them all going.
