A few years ago my husband's mother, father, sister, and brother-in-law were in a car together, and all four were killed instantly in a high-speed collision. We held one funeral for all of them, and the extended family wanted an open viewing the night before the funeral. They are a very religious Catholic family, and this seemed to be part of that tradition. My husband and I attended the viewing, but neither one of us would go to the caskets and view them. We just didn't want to see them that way. We were so emotionally distraught. I was trying to hold myself together for my 2 young daughters, and was afraid that would have sent me over the edge. My husband felt the same way. Other family members seemed to gain some kind of comfort from it.
