Yes I do own a Rio

Bought a Kia Rio new in 2005.  Lucky for me I paid it off early.

Nasty surprise #1 - they are made of sytrofoam, hence one of the most dangerous and expensive cars to insure on the road.  Get an insurance quote and find out!!!!!

Nasty surprise #2- If you don't spend $500 for "required dealer maintenance" at 30,000 and 60,000 miles, they will void your warranty.  The $500 "required" maintenance consists merely of an oil change and a visual inspection on everything else.  Should you pay $500 to keep your warranty?  I don't think so.  They laughed in my face at the dealer when I got this nasty surprise, and told me I should have read the fine print.

Nasty surprise #3 - You cannot get keys for it made anywhere but a Kia dealer.  You can't buy a repair manual for it anywhere at any price - Kia won't issue them.  And good luck getting parts outside the dealership!

Nasty surprise #4 - I recently checked the blue book value on my 2005 Rio.  Based on my location and condition of the car, my $10,000 Rio is now worth $2,500.  That's right, it lost a quarter of its value every year I've owned it.  So next year it will be worth nothing, and the year after - less than nothing?

Nasty surprise #5 - At 55,000 miles, sudden and complete breakdown - would not drive faster than 20 to 30 miles an hour.  Using an educated guess, thought maybe the fuel filter was clogged.  Where is that located - inside the gas tank!

Nasty surprise #6 - My local dealer is in bankrupcy.  I towed the car there just to find they could not work on it.  They did a computer check and said I needed a new carb - but they could not fix it, and I would have to trailer it 60 miles away, as it was still "undrivable".

Nasty surprise #7 - Dealer #2 informs me I have to pay a second time for a computer diagnostic.  They conned me into replacing the timing belt, which they claim "more often than not" busts shortly after 60k miles and they refuse to replace the motor (still covered under drivetrain warranty) if you DON'T replace that timing belt before 60k miles.  They did that FIRST, before running diagnostics, and guess what - there was "nothing wrong" - no computer codes at dealer #2!  Very odd how it sat in my driveway on a trailer for a week, and somehow fixed itself.  My mechanically inclined boyfriend feels they have the computer chip set to disable the vehicles at a certain mileage - forcing you to bring it into the dealer.  I tend to agree.

Yeah, its good on gas.  That's the only kind thing I can say.  I'm currently planning to replace it, because I can't trust when the mystery problem may return, and nasty surprise #7 was the final straw for me.  Next time, it goes straight to the junk yard.  I have found Kia unscrupulous to deal with and I will never own another, nor recommend anyone else to, unless they like to drive unsafe cardboard that costs the moon to insure, and don't mind the dealer's games and lies.
