Woman Fined $1.9 Million For Illegally Downloading 24 Songs

(CNN) -- A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each -- a total of $1.9 million -- for 24 songs.
Jammie Thomas-Rasset's case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.
Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents.
She plans to appeal, he said.
Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the RIIA was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."
"We appreciate the jury's service and that they take this as seriously as we do," she said.
Thomas-Rasset downloaded work by artists such as No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow.
This was the second trial for Thomas-Rasset. The judge ordered a retrial in 2007 after there was an error in the wording of jury instructions.
The fines jumped considerably from the first trial, which granted just $220,000 to the recording companies.
Thomas-Rasset is married with four children and works for an Indian tribe in Minnesota.

Downloading music
You have to download the music to your computer, then you can save it on the CD. I use an iPod, but they do have restrictions. IPods are set up as MP4 files rather than MP3, so you can't transfer the music back and forth from an iPod to say, a Zune. I love the iPod and iTunes, though. I'm big on the instant gratification aspect of being able to download the music, movies, and TV shows that I want. I have 2 iPod Video and I use them both quite a bit.
About the free music - I don't know about those. It's my understanding that any free music site is basically illegal (I could be wrong, though). I've always paid for mine, so I don't know much about it.

For free downloading, I like Limewire. - sm
You can't download directly to a CD. But using a site such as Limewire, you can download it to a music library on the site. Music files can also be transferred from the shared library at Limewire into your own music folder on your PC, too. For me, that makes them easier to transfer to a CD. Then you can put together a play list and burn it to a CD with your CD-burner.
I have a Creative Zen MP3 player, but to be honest, I've never uploaded music to it, so hopefully another reader has those answers. (I bought the Zen used from a friend who has to have the LATEST in techie gear. It was already loaded with music, and I like his taste, so as of yet, since I havent even heard everything on the player, I haven't needed to add anything more. I have so many CDs I've burned over the years, plus my car has a CD player in it, that even though it's becoming a tad obsolete, I still prefer my CD player. (Plus the batteries last much, much longer than the ones in my MP3 player), so most of the time, unless I remember to recharge it, my MP3 player is usually dead. (Or "dormant"?) ;D
If you need help, a good source of that is teenagers! They know everything when it comes to downloading music!

Yeah, actually I do remember the time. You would actually listen to the entire album. Or, if you wanted, just buy the 45.
Now you have to wait for "the best of" to come out in order to get more than a few good songs.
But I do agree that these musicians and sports stars income has gotten out of control.
What athlete truly is worth $12 mil a year? The QBs and WRs are usually paid that salary if they're really good. I loved Randy Moss when he was a Viking, his faults and all but what they paid him is outrageous - plus they just upped the NFL salary cap so the salaries will be even higher. And I truly think that if Moss stays with a QB that is good, he will break all of Jerry Rice's records.
However, I grew up watching quarterbacks like Indian Joe Kapp, playing with one bar across his helmet and taking big time hits from players like Deacon Jones like his famous "head slaps". They didn't baby the QB like they do now. Good grief, if you touch him with your fingertip 0.007 seconds after he releases the ball, it's a 15 yard penalty. Sissies. Go back and watch some football from the 70's. That was real football, not the prima donna crap you see today.
Now I'm sounding like an old fogey but I do miss the good old days of good music and good football. And yes, I still do watch football and root for my beloved Vikings every year but it disappoints me that the game has evolved the way it is and there are so darned many rules that the refs end up deciding at least one game a season with a bad call.
As far as music, heck - would you ever buy a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall and not listen to every song? Any Zeppelin albums out there that haven't been worn down (entire album) by repeated playing?

I think the recording industry should be fined for
cheating consumers for decades by selling tapes, cds and albums with only 1, maybe 2, good songs on them out of 10-15 songs. Remember back when you'd buy an album, and MOST of the songs on it were good? Then RIAA, the middlemen, and managers got even more greedy than they already were, and if an artist wrote 15 good songs, instead of putting all or most of them on an album, they'd put only 1 or 2, and fill the rest of the album up with cr_p that wasn't any better than most teenage garage bands could produce. All the while continuing to raise the price of the product. So to get all 15 good songs, you'd have to buy anywhere from 10-15 albums. Rip-off to the max. I have no sympathy for the recording industry, or for their heavy-handed tactics with the public.
Most of the recording artists are GROSSLY overpaid for what they do. Kinda like most baseball/football players. I don't feel sorry for any of them.

Well, I did file quarterly for about 3 years but not one time in over 7 years of paying yearly was I ever fined by the IRS. I don't really think STATEs have anything to do with it so please ignore my subject line *lol*.......Perhaps you owed or something from prior? Perhaps not. I paid in one lump last year an estimated tax upon asking for my first extension ever - and they returned NEARLY all of what I had sent in - I over-guestimated.......by a milestone...

the best repellant is to call the HOA and the city and get them fined!
I am having the same problem. I have a small dog and I religiously pick up the poop; just had a new neighbor move in one condo over and they have a dog they don't even come outside with - just leave the back door open so it can come in and out on its own. Of course, everyone sees me out walking my dog and are assuming that it is my dog leaving the presents all over the lawn.
I am very upset about it myself - if I scoop the poop, they should also!
But back to your problem, the animal control office should be able to talk to them and in my city if they warn them twice, the third time they start fining them.

If your spouse came to you and said he was having an affair, would you be more upset if it was with a male or female? For me, definitely a female! If it were male then I would think that it had absolutely nothing to do with me and everything to do with him. I would be devastated if he were with another woman. Christmas songs
I HATE songs that are so obviously made to jerk on our heartstrings!!! I've got Sirius radio on playing Christmas music and it's playing The Christmas Shoes right now. I HATE that song!!!! WHY do they think that we need music to reduce us to a big quivering puddle of tears during a season that can do it all by its self if we aren't careful???

that is all they decided to use in the case. I believe she was downloading the songs to a website where people pay to be a member and then can download songs. I don't think she was just downloading them to listen to at home, but think she was actually conducting a criminal activity, knowingly.

I started getting this error message and when I called my computer people they said I had downloaded something that corrupted my operating system. Who knows what they would have charged I had unhooked everything and taken it in and my computer is only a couple months old. Cannot thank you enough. Was just breezing through here and came upon the post. Downloaded the patch and it works.

I can count on one hand the number of prescriptions I've taken in my life. I don't understand why people will take a med if its something that will run its course and your body will take care of. My doctor is great that way. He'll tell me there is a prescription, but if I'm willing to give it time I don't need to take anything. Much rather that...my belief is that every med has some level of toxicity. I'll suffer through a headache or achy bones before taking an over the counter. This has nothing to do with being a christian, it has more to do with group dynamics. I have to deal with it all the time with 6 women in an in-law situation. They are narrow-minded Bible-thumping bigots.I happen to be of another "denomination" and I do attend every function of theirs, weddings, funerals, all of it, receive their communion. I have had my parents die, lost my younger sister and many things happen where they could have reciprocated, yet they will not "step foot" in my church. So where is all their faith, they certainly are not practicing the do unto others. I can relate, it is a horrible way to live. Thank God, I had psychology courses and know about group dynamics, I am in the middle of a herd mentality. I could go on forever, they even have "interventions" when someone in their family wants to marry or date someone not from their denomination. They are awful. I know your pain! It's not your imagination, they hide behind their cohesive "numbers game," one speaks and all the others agree in unison. No one has a chance against this mob. It's tough to be your own person, lots of tears. And guys think it's all in our heads - NOT! Hang in, perhaps you'll have a Divine Intervention somehow.

asking you the same question would you have thought twice about it? He was a rep of the store asking if you found what you were looking for, since it happened to be a bra, I think he phrased it correctly, but then again he did not take into account a person who would take a question the wrong way. He has learned the hard way never to question a lady about her underwear that is for sure. You need to learn to let things roll off your back. If he had leered at you and said, hey lady you find a bra for those nice **** of yours, then yeah, that would be harrassment and not good customer service. Learn to chill some and not worry so much.
