Have him evaluated for the ADD

I would go ahead and have him evaluated for the ADD.  If he's got it, then you can work on coping strategies and ways to work around it if you or he doesn't want medication.  If he doesn't have it, then you've taken one of his excuses away from him.

I hated high school and I was considered very bright and got horrible grades.  I would much rather have spent time reading a book or four.  I did okay, although some may dispute that since now I'm an MT!

High school at the best of times is boring.  It sounds like he definitely could use some strategies for concentration and organization, and maybe he needs to figure out what way HE learns as opposed to what way the school systems teach. It's very possible he's way too smart for the classes.  My older brother was like that.  He was just so bored that he stopped paying attention and ended up getting into lots of trouble, but he's wicked smart.

Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you.

Her parents need to get her evaluated - sm
by a professional. When my now 10-y/o was 3 she could not talk....knew the alphabet though...smart kid, but literally could not speak more than 10 words (and had her own language to boot so that made life really interesting). My husband was in denial that she had a speech problem. I finally said enough is enough, told him to stop burying his head in the sand and got her checked at Children's Hospital here in Richmond. She has speech apraxia (or apraxia of speech). It took intense therapy of twice a week for six months just to get her to talk normally and actually start having a vocabulary, with me working with her every day going over the sound cards they gave me. It took a total of 2 years for her to be considered "cured" or normal. You would never know now that she has/had that. I still get her checked every couple of years though just to make sure her speech developement is on track with her age. Your GGD obviously needs some help, and now. Do not wait. She needs extra care and attention to learn but she also needs to be evaluated for any issues, learning disabilities, dyslexia, etc. My other daughter could not read at 5 in first grade despite having gone to a private school for 2-1/2 years (my other daughter with the apraia was reading and writing in Kindergarten). I was lucky that she had a wonderful 1st grade teacher who actually spent extra time with her and due to her efforts and mine at home she learned how to read after a few months. I know I was at some fault there because I did not spend the same amount of time with her that I did with my older daughter when she was that age, having her learn the alphabet, trying to read to me, etc. It is really important for parents to do those alphabet books with their kids, they learn so much from them and that is the basis of their reading and writing. I hope it works out well for your family.
May be you should be evaluated for sleep apnea.
or information on proper sleep hygiene.  It is not normal to be that sleepy half of the way through the day if you are sleeping well at night.  Sleep apnea is a very serious condition that can cause other health problems.  Good luck.
Thanks for all the info. I am going to go get evaluated, maybe next week. (sm)
I appreciate you taking all the time to answer me. You are one of the nice people on this board who gets slammed a lot like I do! I think there are only one or two who come on just to antagonize everyone else LOL...so if they remark on this I'll just ignore them! Thanks again!
