When you say hoops do you mean

the things that actually create a large hole in the ear or just regular hoops like girls wear?

My reason for asking is this.  Whether he gets his ears pierced is between you and him, but if he's going for those really big holes in his ears, I'd make him wait until he's 18.  Regular holes can grow shut or be unnoticeable without an earring in, but those big holes are permanent and he might have a hard time getting a job with those.

As for me, I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5.  None of them have asked for their ears to be pierced yet (thankfully), but they are bugging me for a mohawk.  Hair grows back, so I can deal with that.  My 7-year-old has short spikey hair and wants it blonded with blue tips.  I'm scheduling an appt for him to have it done professionally because I can't imagine what it would end up looking like if I did it.

Same thing for the earrings.  Better to take him to a professional than having him sneak behind your back with a few friends, a half-sterilized needle and a potato.  The infection could end up costing him his whole ear.  Some things are permanent; some things aren't.  Pick your battles wisely.
