They were very plain cabinets without a lot of grooves. We took off doors and drawer fronts used Stripeeze, then sanded down with hand sander, stained and varnished. Put on new hardware which made a big difference. We do lots of stuff ourselves, new windows, Pergo floors, etc. Saves money and can be a lot of fun as long as hubby just does what I tell him!!
