Walmart fired my daughter...

Posted By: UTMT on 2006-12-12
In Reply to: is there a store you will not shop - in no matter what?

the last week in November.  She had called in sick 2 days before, and the assistant manager who fired her said they knew she had called, but they were firing her for a "no call, no show."  The truth is my daughter worked in lay-away, which has been discontinued at Walmart, and they had no place for her in another department.

She had loved working there and was totally crushed when they fired her.  A month before Christmas . . . what a nice surprise!

I think Walmart stinks.

Did someone actually get fired for this?

Should They Be Fired?
If they don't and ask them to pay back the no smoking benefit $$ I wonder how far they can go back?

39 Whirlpool workers suspended over smoking lies

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AP) -- Smoking can be hazardous to your health, and it's turning into a bad career move, too.
A Whirlpool Corp. factory in Evansville, Indiana, has suspended 39 workers who signed insurance paperwork claiming they don't use tobacco and then were seen smoking or chewing tobacco on company property. Now, some could be fired for lying, company spokeswoman Debby Castrale said.
As annual health care premiums rise more than 10 percent a year, many companies are trying to rein in costs by encouraging healthy living.
"I can't think of a client of ours who has not shifted their focus to controlling the cost of their health care plan," said Indianapolis, Indiana, benefits lawyer Mike Paton.
Some employers have developed wellness programs to motivate employees, while others ask employees to state on benefits forms whether they use tobacco.
Whirlpool, based in Benton Harbor, Michigan, uses financial incentives to encourage U.S. workers and their dependents to abstain from tobacco use, spokeswoman Jill Saletta said. The specifics vary according to location.
In Evansville, the 1,500-employee factory charges tobacco users an extra $500 in annual health insurance premiums. The refrigerator factory has levied the extra premium since 1996, and it depends on employees to honestly fill out forms. It doesn't mandate blood tests to detect nicotine or trail employees outside work, Castrale said.
Management suspended the 39 employees Friday after they were spotted using either chewing tobacco on company property or taking a drag in one of the factory's dozen shelters for outdoor smoking, Castrale said.
"It's definitely not something we wanted to do," she said. "It's unpleasant."
The employees were suspended without pay, and they'll present their case at "fact-finding" meetings before management determines their fate. Whirlpool had to recall some laid-off workers to keep production running due to the suspensions.
A 2007 national survey showed that 16 percent of all large employers -- those with 20,000 or more employees -- adjust health care premium contributions according to the worker's smoking status, according to the human resources consulting firm Mercer.
The federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act limits the changes an employer can make to a health premium because of a worker's unhealthy habits. But it doesn't set parameters on punishment if an employee lies about his or her habit, Paton said.
Lewis Maltby, president of the National Workrights Institute, which advocates for employee privacy, sees no problem with employers trying to curb smoking. But he worries that the trend of cracking down on employees' unhealthy behavior is extending beyond tobacco use.
"We shouldn't have to give employers complete control over our private life so they can save a few dollars on medical care," he said.

I got fired once ...
supposedly because after only a half-day of training on the front desk, I could not address the patients by name when I saw them! Since my entire period of employment up until I was called to substitute at the front desk was spent stashed in the back transcribing, I had never even SEEN the patients, and thus could not possibly be expected to match names with faces. Obviously, they fired me for other reasons. It is equally obvious that the OP's co-workers and supervisors are not looking out for her best interests, and the lack of ability to understand a couple of ESL dictators is probably the least of her problems. (I am assuming it is a her. Forgive me if I am mistaken about that.)

Accents or no, some dictators defy understanding. Right now I am transcribing a doctor from Nigeria who is a little mushy but she speaks quite slowly, pronounces almost everything correctly, and I stand in awe at her (and most other ESL docs, frankly) command of English usage and syntax, with the added "bonus" of medical language on top of everything else.

And one night when I was pretty new on this job, I transcribed a VERY difficult ESL doc, whom I was ready to KILL by the time I was done. (And he was from my tertiary backup account so I didn't have samples to refer to, or prior experience with him.) But at the end, he said something like, "Thank you for taking the trouble to transcribe this dictation, God bless you, please." Okay, he was allowed to live. ;)

And I've NEVER been taken to task for leaving blanks. Never. I was even told by a supervisor that if I have to leave 100 blanks, so be it--they'd rather I blank it than try to guess.
Absolutely, and she should be fired...!

but I am not sure it is a crime. An 18-year-old knows what she is doing. To be honest, so does a 16 or 17-year-old. I certainly think that he should lose his teaching license, but it really is not sexual misconduct with a minor. She was not a minor.
Yes, they should be fired and required to refund
They hurt everyone with this. It is lying, cheating and stealing.

It's his time if he's off the clock. Otherwise he should be fired - nm

Believe it or not, but I take Walmart brand Onion and Garlic and mix it with a jar of Walmart brand
Mixing the two sauces togeter gives it the right amount of garlic and veggies. Our family is Italian on both sides, but we all agree for a quick jar sauce instead of homemade, this does the trick! YUM
It's not the worker's fault. She has to follow the rules or be fired. sm
I've taken a lot of flack from a lot of customers, and the run-of-the-mill retail worker really has no freedom to make decisions. When the worker is caught between a yelling customer and a yelling manager, who do you think she'll listen to?
Daughter's phone is daughter's responsibility. Valuable lesson learned.
It should be between the daughter and the friend if the friend is going to pay any of the fees. They are teenagers, not preschoolers.
Have you tried Walmart?
x
Yes, Walmart has said you
could get your money back for the recalled products. And even if they are different products from China, you could try. Walmart needs to know it matters where they get food from. When buying pet dishes, I suppose we need to make sure they aren't from China or they might have lead.

Just heard - Walmart is in.
It was just announced on CNN that Walmart is going to acknowledge Christmas.
Walmart/Christmas
Okay, so Walmart has brought Christmas back. That will make some customers happy, but on another note, they've ticked a lot of customers off by doing away with layaway.
walmart/christmas
I don't think I've ever used it. I'm with you, I don't like standing in line! lol Anyway, I don't remember why they are closing it. It was in the paper here a while back. I just feel bad for those that rely on it for Christmas. One thing I thought was cool, from a friend, every time she goes to Walmart she puts $5-$20 on a gift card (same card every time)and uses that at Christmas. Unfortunately, I think I would use it up and not save it for Christmas! lol
I had an old guy do that to me in WalMart one time
I was coming out of an aisle and I always stop and look because sometimes other people just don't.  Well, I almost ran into this older man because I didn't see him right away.  He looked right at me, rammed his cart into mine, swore under his breath and went on his merry way.
You shop at Walmart too?

WalMart decorator
Used Wal Mart for my daughter's bridal shower cake.....did not have that problem....Where do you live......that was really uncalled for.....
WalMart Rage
I have a thought! We could sell tickets to the shopping "encounters" and make a bundle! That way, we could all afford to shop wherever we want for whatever we want when this is all over.

Actually, I don't really think this is restricted to just Christmas season - I have had some nuts "accost" me at other stores too, especially Costco, during all the seasons. The most annoying and aggresive was an old man (looked in his late 70s) who wanted my space in line and kept "ramming" my basket trying to cut into line. He had already tried it on two other people and "lost" out in another line - I had been watching him. My husband told me to let him go in front of us and suddenly a light came on in my head and I lost it. I turned around and asked him if he was crazy or just rude. Then, a man behind me told me to "comeon, just let him go" and then I REALLY lost it. I told the crazy guy to keep it up and I would call the police on him for battery. He just looked at me and looked at me. I don't know about you guys, but sometimes enough is enough. I am old now and tired and so sick of people like him. Why should I "keep the peace" at my own expense when that is exactly what most of the people like him expect? Besides, it was "empowering" to tell him to bug off. I don't look for trouble, but I don't have to be a doormat either and I don't intend to. Maybe one of those people that were taken away to the hospital were like me. Hope that doesn't happen to me too, but hey you never know. From now on I do not ever intend to be intimidated by rude mean people again. Even if they punch me! I will fight back. Guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure that I have something substantial in my basket to use just in case he is bigger than me?

Why didn't someone call security before the problem got out of control?

Where we live sometimes there is WalMart rage out in the parking lot too over spaces! Yet another reason to never go there! I guess we should shop where they have the most security to keep you safe from the other customers.
Walmart here has the music CD for $10 (sm)
Not sure if they have the actual cartoon...I love how it puts the season back in the right perspective. I also think the fact that I have been watching it around Christmas since I was a kid has something to do with it helping me feel "Christmasy". The CD is really good though-I've seen the cartoon so many times I can picture it while I'm listening to the music and doing other things.

LOL---Walmart:-) That's good. NM

I don't know but after I posted this I went to Walmart
and got this supposedly comfortable panty that cinches waist and tucks tummy. Looks comfortable. Only 7 bucks. Still too chicken to try it. Now I bid on e bay that body shaper thing like the one on HSN so it makes me 10 pounds lighter. Looks uncomfortable but will try. Of course, I just gave up and am getting size 10/11 jeans now. Going to auction off my size 5 jeans. I am torn between being comfortable and me and looking good and uncomfortable. Don't you just love midlife crises? BTW: I look at vintage clothing from the 80s back to 50s. Nobody could ever fit in those 36-24-36 garments. They had to have worn girdles all the time at least in the 50s, or they had some amazing way to figure out how to distribute!
No it is a PC game that you can buy at WalMart
They do make a console version but it's horrid.

if you have slow PC or laptop I would recomend The Sims Life Stories because The Sims 2 game takes up a lot of memory and requires a fast system, the Life Stories is a "lite" version and requires you to reach certain goals rather than free play. I really enjoyed Life Stories, wish they would come out with more.

here is the sims 2 deluxe edition:

Why do Walmart and Meijers have 20 or
more checkout lanes, but only 2 or 3 open at any given time?
This could happen anywhere, not just WalMart.

Walmart employee
And while EMS was trying to work on him to save his life, people were still trying to walk around them to get in the store and shop.  It is a very sad look at our society.

why I shop at Walmart
to save money. I have a bottom line too, and I go where I can get the best price.

I have a neighbor who thinks Walmart is Satan too, and guess what? we caught her shopping there last week.

The medical industry should boycott companies that send our work to India, then maybe I could afford to shop at Target. :)

Shopping at Walmart
We shop at Walmart every week. Everything is much cheaper there and as the other poster said, I go there to save money. Our store is clean and the people are friendly. There is a Target directly across the street from our Walmart and there is hardly ever anyone there and the Walmart parking lot is mobbed.
I think Walmart is the Antichrist.
is truly evil. Sorry, but that's my take. I am lured in time after time by their so-called lower prices, and eats my paycheck away. It is also becoming a monopoly in my town, not many other places to even shop. I miss the old days where we at least had more of a choice.
PS: At first when the Walmarts are new, they look clean, and the employees are kind. We just had a new Superwalmart move in about half a mile from the old one. When the Walmart gets a few years old: Dirty, and nasty workers. Antichrist: Looks good at first, turns sour at the end and takes us all down with him. LOL.

After stopping off at Walmart ;)

pizza is the very best, and he is my super picky eater.  We get them often.  The pepperoni is quite greasy but you can dab off the extra grease with a paper towel.  If they have the canadian bacon thin crust, grab one and enjoy!  I recommend those above all other flavors.  Yum!

I buy the Walmart roast, I think it's 2.98 a pound. sm
I believe it said round roast on the sticker-the hunks I buy are around 10.00 apiece with absolutely no fat. My husband loves them. I put it in the oven frozen and cooked it all afternoon on low. Threw two small cans of V8 juice, a whole onion, some garlic and pepper. I thickened the juice with flour a little Gravy Master to darken the juice so it wouldn't be red and put in my potatoes, turned the oven up to 350 and everything was done and piping hot for hubby at 4:30. I had 1 slice, he ate the rest. Now, is that fair? LOL.

Go to Walmart. Remember, buying the SM
original toothbrush is one thing; every six months or so, you have to purchase the replacement brush for the device. Wonder how much that costs?

Correction to above.K-Mart. Not Walmart.
Wouldn't step into a Walmart. Can't even afford that store these days LOL.
You can make one yourself at Walmart with their machine (sm)
they have them here in North Carolina beside the photo drop-off area. I had someone help with my mother and father in-laws though because I wanted music added. If you are very computer savvy though, you may be able to do it yourself if adding music matters to you.

Why does Walmart have so many automated registers?? (sm)
When they don't work at least 50% of the time and you have to wait for someone to come help you? Why can't they employee real living, breathing humans??
Early X-mas shopping at walmart.com..sm
Does anyone know if the specials that Walmart offers on black Friday in the stores are also available online?  I am working Friday and I do not want to go to Walmart at 5 am just for 3 or 4 items, but on at least one item I would save 30 bucks.  I do not want to over extend myself by getting up and going to Walmart and then coming back home trying to get in the work mode.  I am usually so frustrated by the crowds and disrespectful people that I am irritatated when I return home.
Walmart only game in town sm
I live in a poor rural county and Walmart is the only place there is to shop and is also one of the largest employers. This may be because they came in and killed off other businesses, but there is also Family Dollar and Dollar General which seem to be going strong. When I'm in there, which is probably 2-3 times a week, they are always telling employees to take breaks and I see the same faces I've seen for the past 7 years.  I can't afford to shop anywhere else and if I could, don't have time to drive at least 1 hour one way to shop at Target, Kohls, etc. which is what I would have to do.
