Very dusty, we live on a private dirt /gravel road - sm

have a dirt/gravel driveway )very short). Dust just seems to seep through somehow. House was built in 1989. I hate to clean so that does not help, and lots of stuff/clutter here for it to accumulate on. Need to just empty the house and bring back in only a few things and sell the rest. Would make such a difference.

I love the smell of a gravel road...sm
I think foreigners/men with accents are sexy....

I was valedictorian and voted most likely to succeed...now I'm a SAHM who does transcription to supplement our income. I wouldn't trade a single moment with my kids for the most successful position in the world...

My favorite guilty pleasure is watching stupid movies with hot guys (like Spring Break Shark Attack).
Dusty Rhodes
Are you from Ohio? When I was in SA TX one of the newsmen was Dusty Rhodes and he had been from around Dayton Ohio and I heard him when we lived there, too.
Is your house perpetually dusty?
I bet if they had a contest for the dustiest house in the world, I'd get it. Even after thoroughly dusting and having one of those whole-house air cleaner thingies with the HEPA filters.
I knew a boy in school named Dusty Rhodes

What dirt?

Joe Dirt
:)
Can you believe, old as dirt and never had
mac and cheese in my entire life. I am probably afraid it would become an addiction like other foods I love.
DIRT PIE
oreos and whip cream, you can't go wrong. just Google DIRT PIE. it was a kids dish, but a lot of people made it a little more grown up. I have had it all kinds of ways and all very good.
Older than dirt...
No, I just turned 64 in March. My ex said his Lasik did not last and my eyesight was in the 20/400 range, really bad so really glad when I got the Lasik as glasses and contacts just was not doing the job anymore. I know according to the patient cataracts grow at different growths so maybe that is the problem now, at least if that were the case insurance would pay for it and Lasik not.
Dirt concerns
Your daughter could get head lice from the girl coming to your house, from school, etc.  Let  her go to the party, and have her take a shower when she comes home!
I'm older than dirt

'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'

'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.' 'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. ! 'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER! owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 5. It was, of course, black and white,

I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

We didn't have a car until I was 4. It was an old black Dodge.

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at

6AM

every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

MEMORIES from a friend :

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.

Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.

Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

Older than dirt here, too......... sm

I can also remember:

1.  Licking and sticking S&H Green Stamps into a saver book and taking them to the redemption center with my mother.  That's how I got my first luggage set.

2.  Raleigh coupons that came in the cigarettes that Dad smoked.  These were also good for redemption for merchandise, but mom had to package them up in bundles of 100 with rubber bands, pack them in a box, wrap the box with a brown paper grocery sack cut to fit and tie it with string.  We then mailed it and waited the customary 6 - 8 weeks for our merchandise to arrive.  I believe she got a set of dishes with this once and who knows what else.  It, like the Green Stamps, was so common place in our home that we didn't really pay attention to what was purchased with them.

3.  Going to the soda fountain at the drug store downtown and ordering a Coke float.

4.  We lived on a farm and sometimes processed our own meat.  I can remember helping to package and label package after package of beef or pork.

5.  Related to the above, I can remember my mother straining milk that our milk cow produced twice a day.  For each gallon of milk, about a third of it was pure yellow cream.  My dad would drink the cream off the top of the milk with supper at night.  That kid doctor in the original post probably would have had a stroke over that.  Surprisingly though, Dad never did and lived to be the ripe old age of 83.  Mother also made and sold fresh-churned butter and buttermilk.  That buttermilk made the BEST cornbread to go with the peas that Dad grew in the garden and Mom canned for us to eat through the winter.  Sometimes peas and cornbread WAS supper.

6.  I can remember getting a special dress twice a year....once on Easter and once on Christmas.....and wearing it to church with my family.  Of course, these dresses were designed and crafted and sewn by my mother.  All of my clothes were, in fact, and I always got so many compliments on my clothes and from people with money at that!

7.  I can remember going into town with Daddy on Saturday mornings and getting 25 cents worth of candy.  It was enough to last a whole week but it seldom did.  We didn't get candy or soft drinks every day and they were a special treat.

8.  I didn't eat a "store bought" cookie until I was at least 13 years old.

9.  I didn't have a "store bought" dress until I was at least 9 years old and only then because I was attending a wedding and mother did have time to make me a new dress (which she thought I had to have a new dress for any "occasion").  I think it cost $12 and my daddy had to work for about 6 hours to pay for that dress!

10.  I can remember segregation and the first year our little school integrated.

11.  I can remember watching the evening news and seeing the casualty lists from the Vietnam War being scrolled across the screen.

12.  I can remember JFK's assasination and funeral and my mother crying as she watched the news coverage on our black and white TV while ironing.  She was using one of those bottles described in the original post.

13.  I remember our class being taken to the auditorium and watching the first man walk on the moon.

14.  I remember daily assemblies that included Scripture reading and prayer at school and these were lead by a teacher.

15.  I didn't see a color TV until I was about 12 or 13 and that was at a friend's house.  I didn't know they even existed until then.

16.  I remember the first attempt at movies on disks.  They were huge plastic things in huge plastic boxes and the picture quality was abysmal.  Of course, we thought it was great.

17.  I remember Hi-FI stereos with automatic record changers that played 33s and 45s and what an improvement it was to be able to stack records and not have to change them after each one was finished.  At least I'm not quite old enough to remember using a Victrola!

When I think about all the innovations and inventions I have seen in my lifetime, it amazes me.  There are microwaves, color tv, personal computers, cell phones, MP3 players, CDs, VCRs, DVDs, and the list goes on.  Boy, do I feel old now!

think about down the road
My sister is in a very similar situation. Her husband won't ever go out socially or even to family functions or kids' extracuricular activities. Think about how this will be down the road after you have kids. You are lucky because you aren't married yet, don't have kids, and are thinking rationally about this. If this is really how you want the rest of your life to be, then so be it, but if you can't imagine still doing this in 20 years then maybe it's not worth it. My sister has told me many times if she could have looked into the future and realized what he was going to be like (they only dated for a few months before they got married and he faked being sociable to make her like him) she would have never married him. Now they have 4 kids and she feels stuck in an unhappy life but won't make a change because of the kids. She knows that even though they love each other she would be happier with someone who was more like herself and really her husband would be more happy with someone more like himself, too.
You are right about that clouds of dust/dirt thing...
I have a bagless and that is exactly what I do not like about it.
Isn't it throwing the first hand of dirt onto the casket
Putting their body to rest, they loved ones toss the first handful of dirt? Maybe I am wrong.

Can't even imagine how Anna N. mother could walk on her daughter's freshly dug grave, never heard of such a thing.

There was a reason A.N. Smith was like she was and her mother may have been big part of it. That she had a multimillionaire daughter who didn't share the loot with her must probably made the woman insulted. Unevenly distributed wealth distorts close family relationships like nothing else can.
I do like it and I am also watching Dirt this season and Riches.

no but i also don't stay married to someone who treats me like dirt

You still don't know which road to take with that question,
do you? I don't think they are standing in front of road, with the truthful man standing in front of the correct road or anything like that.
road rage sm
I can agree NCMT, same thing happened to us on New Years Eve one time, screamed my head off, not a cop around and went through two states. I will never forget it. I don't speak of it often as I didn't think anyone would believe me! No cell phones then, that's why they are useful, although I am not sure how fast they would come, but it sure makes you feel better. Thanks for sharing.
Please don't take my post down that road
I did not write that post for people to start gay bashing, any bashing, or bible thumping. I was talking about basic rights that have been taken away from me, because of the rights some others think they need. And don't bash me, I believe in God and I will answer to Him for me, and me alone. I will not answer to Him for everyone else, they can do that on their own.
It isn't uncommon for the loved ones to throw some dirt on the grave. sm
I didn't see it though so am not sure if this is the type of thing you are talking about or not.  In my husband's family the men actually stay and cover the grave using shovels, but it is a different culture than what we are used to in the US, he and his father covered his grandfather's grave and my husband covered our son's grave.    Not sure about 'walking' on the grave though... that seems disrespectful... but again, I didn't see so don't know.
Anna Nichole's mother did not just put dirt or whatever on the grave, she
actually WALKED over the top of the grave. I was shocked because where I live so disrespectful, had never ever seen this done before. I am southern and her mother also lives in the south. Just not done in my neck of the woods. Even after burial, I always try to go around marked graves, never treading on them if I can at all keep from doing so.
yep - your tune shall change down the road..LOL

Look at the bigger picture down the road.....
xx
I'm going down same road - please answer questions for me-sm
I have no other option but to get this done. I have been putting this off for awhile now, terrified of dentists.

1. Do you feel better healthwise since you got the dentures? Sometimes, I feel I will just generally feel better and maybe have more energy if I get this done.

2. Did they pull all top ones at once or in a few visits? Seems like such a traumatic thing to me to have done, maybe it's not so bad though?

3. What kind of anesthetic did you have, just novocaine or nitrous oxide or completely out?

3. Do you feel better about how they look and happy about having it done, now that it's over?

Thanks so much.
Hey, you're "right up the road" from me!

I'm just a tad southwest of Bangor, maybe 3 exits south off 95.  I love Acadia but not during tourist season!  I think Orono is nice--college townish if you're into that scene.  I feel old and crusty when I go there, so I don't.  I just spent the day in Bangor because we've been without power for 24 hours and just got it back on mere minutes ago.  Crazy T-storms here yesterday!

Welcome to Maine and sorry your vacation is turning out to be so crappy.  Mine always do to, which I why I haven't taken one in...oh....5 years now!

private schools

No, it's not fair that you should have to pay for a private school, but that might just be what is best for your daughter.  We decided 16 years ago that our 3 children would not go to public schools.  We have spent a fortune over the years, but I do not regret it for an instant.

His profile may not be set to private. sm
Just set yourself up an account and look for him by e-mail addy.  He shouldn't mind.  The only one of my contacts that minded was my nephew and he deleted me, but he's weird like that.
Private counseling
Go to a private counselor yourself if he won't go. Some of these "ANONYMOUS" programs attract those who do not get it and go around town blabbing your business, ruining your lives even moreso. Yes, they save lives but they often ruin them with their gossip, even the name gossip hisses, it ruins lives, topples marriages, loses jobs. Be sure before you let these people into your personal, private lives and your homes. Sometimes private, closed-door counseling is the best way to go. Then if you are both comfortable with going "public" that is your own personal decision. Beware of who you let into your life. If you were going to take a plane ride you would want to know the pilot.
I use it. I have everything private so only friends
that I approve can see my profile, and as far as personal info, my profile only shows my name and city.
Religious conviction is a narrow road for some.
dd
Then, they can widen the road by allowing God to come into their lives!
g
They unknowingly turned onto a logging road.
Logging roads are not owned and/or maintained by the state. I believe it's the US Forest Service whose in charge of them. In any case, they are not public roads and are only supposed to be used by logging companies (popular with hunters also though). Unfortunately, the Kims did not know this when reading their map. They thought it was a normal road/highway.

Such a sad ending.
Me, again another thing 1 night riding down the road
going very fast saw these huge eyes - a cow in the middle of the road, good thing I did not hit her.
Me too - more of a road block really, flat and wide. :) Also known as ,
Apple A$$ :)

An unfortunate trait inherited from my mother's side of the family.
yes, the dogs are left outside to run around, right next to a very busy road sm

yesterday i took my son to ball practice to see if he wanted to join.  the friend i talked about in this post, his mom was there.  (i knew the boy played ball, that's why my son wanted to play ball too).  so i told my son that we'd go watch and see if that's what he wants to do.  so i'm sitting there talking with the mom and i told her that i was a little scared of my son playing football because of getting hurt, etc.  that he had already had two broken bones.  she said that her husband (the dad that kicked the dog), has had several broken bones, from wrecks and she said when he was younger, he used to fight (like street fighting type stuff, not boxing).  but she said that he doesn't do that any more, we grow up as we get older.  i thought to myself, i guess he just beats up dogs now.  i'm going to check into what rescue groups are around here.  it's very obvious these dogs don't go to the vet for checkups.  even if there is no child abuse going on, the kids are going to think it's ok to hurt animals.

thanks for your opinions

The private school we're considering is ...sm
the one my daughter went to for pre-K and she liked it there then. I didn't send her there for kindergarten because I believe that public education should be educating kids. 3 of the 5 kids in the 1st grade at the private school are kids she went to pre-K with and she liked them - one was her best friend. The private school does have a good principal and they don't tolerate bad behavior for a second, and parents are called if their child misbehaves (been there, done that in pre-K!). Fortunately the tuition is reasonable and better than the other private schools in the area that have worse teacher ratios and nickel & dime you to death.
My kids - private school sm
I have two teens now, but in their grade school years, they attended private school. It is a financial struggle, but well worth it,in my opinion.

Now, one is a senior and the other a freshman in high school in public school. Both just sail through in all honors and AP courses. This is possible because of the study habits, learning techniques and discipline they received in private school as their foundation.

Not every child will have the same results, but I can't say enough about private schools laying the foundation for success in education.

GOOD LUCK in whatever you decide.
I guess that got past me but what does going to private
school have to do with this? Things that were in our past we have no control over. I live in the "deep south" and I am prejudiced, very much so, have always been, against thin women, healthy volumed hair ladies, people who do not like animals and my list goes on and on. I do think with all that happened in our deep south, you would not think we would have such an influx of blacks wanting to settle here and call it home, would you? Bad things can happen anywhere, anywhere.
private school answer.........sm

I think most private schools don't have to follow those govt innoculations things - I'm not sure, of course, but I seem to have heard something about that from parents who sent their children to private schools.  I couldn't afford that back in the days.

As for the deep south....things have gotten better for the American blacks all throughout this country finally after 400+ years or thereabouts...........I look toward Atlanta, Georgia because it shows what I'm talking about.  There are a tremendous amount of successful black Americans in Atlanta (not just in Atlanta either - Florida for one) and living in GREAT neighborhoods, buying expensive property and kudos to them.....I'm tolerant of everyone and everything in life except the intolerant and the extremists/terrorists and people who take advantage of others.....

wow. I never delved into her private life--sm
nor was I ever interested in it, but I had no idea she was that wealthy. Didn't she get divorced a few years back though? Wasn't her ex a judge, as well? maybe I am confusing her with someone else. Thanks for the info though. It is pretty interesting.
My calendar is in my private office and no one
else in the family even knows what it is for. My daughter will even mark the calendar if I haven't done it. Just last month she came in to count the days so she could make plans for an upcoming swimming party. Just so tired of the speculation that all teenage girls are sexully active. Believe it or not there are still some good girls out there.
Private vs state college.

My daughter has been accepted to U of Tampa, a private college.  She will be a transfer student from a community college. However, she is also entertaining going to U of South FL (St. Pete campus).

Financially it's the same because with UT she is getting grants/scholarships for most of the tuition.  At USF, she will be covered 75% by Bright Futures.  We will have to take out loans for housing for either.

We are having extreme anxiety over this.  Both campuses are very nice, but her personality is more condusive to the St. Pete (state college) atmosphere.  It's on the bay and looks to be much more laid back than UT which is in the middle of downtown Tampa.

There are so many factors and if I enumerated them here, well, ya'll would get very bored.  But her major concern is learning and her second concern is being happy in her environment.  We are not big city folk, but I have no doubt wherever she goes, she will succeed.  I just want her to have the best experience possible.  In my heart I think USF is best, but she thinks resume-wise, a private college would look better.  Also, she is having a problem with turning down the grants/scholarships ($15,000) from UT and opting  for a state school.

Let me also briefly say that her program of study is very strong at both schools and she has links with a professor at one of the schools who is advising her, but nonbiased (so he's helpful, but not enough to say GO HERE! lol)

I'm just wondering if private is all it's cracked up to be?  I don't know... She's going to have to make this decision on her own, but if any of ya'll have any input regarding either school or the area or college experience with state vs private, I would really appreciate a word or two!

One more thing... she's a huge baseball fan... Rays fan... St. Pete campus is 2 miles from the stadium...  Not that that's a big consideration, but a comfort zone is a good thing?

And... I would move there with her IN A HEARTBEAT (either place), but my son is about to enter an AS program (radiology) at the community college here and that track cannot be interrupted... just wanted to give all pertinent info for best input by ya'll.

My daughter is currently attending a private
college and she absolutely loves it. She just finished her freshman year. While she could have gone with full tuition to both state colleges, she chose the private school and with her grants/scholarships, etc. her dad and I are only paying about $2000 a year. Her school is so much smaller, the class sizes are approximately 15 to 20 students (if that many) and all the professors are very supportive and actually interested in all the students. She has told me there is no way she would go to a larger, public institution just because of the astmosphere. The entire campus is bascially just 1 big happy family.

It was an adjustment for her, but she had attended a state scholars program the year before, so she had lived away from home last summer, plus she is only 90 miles away from home now, so she basically comes home every weekend.

My daughter likes the school being small (it is smaller than her high school) and enjoys the family-like feel.

Whatever your daughter decides, I am sure she will be happy whereever she goes, but IMO the private college is the way to go. The private college my daugher attends is ranked in the top 10 liberal art colleges in the country, and she has been told that a diploma from there does more than just get your foot in the door for job interviews. I don't know about all of the private colleges, but where she is they do help with locating employment after college and have a 95% success rate with that to.

There is just more individual attention at a smaller school, which really helped her out with her freshman year which is a hard enough transition anyway.
I realize this is a private matter, but

is there someone close to the both of you that could be present when you tell him.  Ordinarily, I would recommend meeting him in a public place, but in this case, since it is a financial affair, I wouldn't recommend that.  However, if there is someone you are both close to, perhaps you could have them present (even if only in the other room) while you tell him.

Another possibility may be to discuss this with your in-laws first.  Again, I wouldn't ordinarily recommend this, but they appear to already be involved in your financial matters since you borrowed the money from them for the car.  Depending on their reaction, perhaps you could all sit down together and they could help you work this out.

If all else fails, call your attorney and schedule a meeting where he will mediate.  I would not tell this man alone in person.  It doesn't sound like a safe thing to do.

That is what stinks about private schools - sm
my kids used to attend private school, one reason I pulled them out was this one girl who bullied everyone, she was allowed to hurt kids, over and over again because the school wanted the tuition money and the father donated thousands of dollars in money, time, and construction labor to the school, and they were constantly "giving" things just so their daughter would not get kicked out. After trying to stangle someone the parents were finally told they had to get the girl some help and now she is on medication, but it took 4 years before the school did anything. The girl is still there, friendless basically, all the kids in her class cannot stand her, and she is just a pain in general. It is very sad in a way, if the parents had gotten her help a lot sooner she probably would not have allienated all the kids in her class (20 or so).
