Used this instead of wire, chew toys, water cup on front gate, they grow to love it as their "home" and you will wonder why you didn't buy one before, it more than pays for itself and you don't have to worry while away. I had several dogs who did hundreds of dollars worth of damage. I did not know about crating. Used sour apple spray for one dog, another like it! Talk to the pet supply store and look for ads, trainers buy crates up fast in the paper, I drove 100 mi. round trip for my Vari Kennel, plastic with wire front gate, not as ugly as the wire ones. If it's too big, put a cardboard separator until the dog gets bigger, then the bigger, the better they like it. They feel protected and actually want to go in there as time goes on. Good for when you have company who doesn't like animals as well. They also have fancier ones online that look like furniture but expensive.

may have kennel cough
I think kennel cough does eventually resolve but can be treated without much of expense - ask a vet.
I'm sure it's kennel cough (sm)
We adopted a dog from the local SPCA and he had it - they told us it spreads like wildfire among dogs who are confined. They would have let us bring him there to be treated, but it was too far, so we just took him to our vet. I don't know about a rescue group, but it seems to be that they should be responsible for it. If they refuse, maybe a local vet will let you pay it off, but it must be treated. It is otherwise known as Bordatella. Good luck. It is an awful-sounding cough, I know.
what the kennel thinks
When I was a kid a spoiled dog got "Gainsburger"
Now the kennel I take my dog to thinks my dog is spoiled because she gets raw chicken.
I think it is all brainwashing by "experts" and I adamantly disagree about vast improvements in our food industry for humans or animals.
If you are leaving for 3 weeks, take them to a kennel and sm
pay for daily care. They need more than food and water, they need attention and loving and daily petting, and exercise. Bless you for taking them on, but don't desert them now.
Could be kennel cough, heartworms.
He really should not go in for surgery until the reason for the cough is found and cleared up. If kennel cough, he will need antibiotics. If heartworms he would need a treatment that is a couple of hundred or so.
Any one ever deal with kennel cough in their dog? nm
We got a beautiful baby basset hound about three weeks ago. We took her because she was the last of 13 in her litter and had given up to die. She had quit eating and drinking at the pet store. When we went to see her she just lit up with my daughter and actually ate some food while we were there. We brought her home because we couldnt bear thinking of her dying. We took her to the vet and she had failure to thrive, worms, and kennel cough. We have had her on two rounds of antibiotics, diazepam, worm medication, Pepcid, and Torbitrol. We had her to the emergency vet last weekend and she spent the night in ICU because of respiratory distress. I just took her back to our vet again today because she was up all night coughing and crying. She vomited 5 times this morning and has refused food since yesterday. The vet said she now has full blown pneumonia and the kennel cough has been a resistant type so we are now trying another antibiotic and more Torbitrol for the coughing. This poor baby has been through it. I am so glad we took her as the vet said she would have definitely died by now.
I was just wondering if anyone has dealt with kennel cough before? Thanks for any insite to this problem. She is such a sweet little dog. She just breaks my heart when I see her coughing and struggling for air.
My very first boxer as an adult had kennel
cough. I rescued her from a pet shop under similar circumstances. She had been there with her brother and her brother died. I refused to let her die in a pet store so brought her home took her to the vet and got her started on medication. The first month was rough, there were nights I just sat in bed and held her, she felt so miserable. She finally got through it and after that rocky start she lived to the age of 13.5 with not another medical problem the rest of her life.
My husband has a kennel full of beagles...sm
He rabbit hunts with them and loves it. Before rabbit season went out which I think it just did he was hunting rabits with the beagles all the time. I think he enjoys the dogs hunting and watching them more than actually wanting rabbits. My husband has said he will never move to a subdivision either because he wants to be in the country where he can have his privacy and dogs and all but that doesn't bother me. I am fine living in the country. I couldn't take the keeping pigenos in a cage just to kill them. I would not like that. Now my husband if he has been hunting does tick checks on himself before he gets a shower. That is gross to just leave them until you are ready to pluck them off. I couldn't handle the junk either in the yard. My husband would have our yard looking like no telling what if I would allow it but I just stay on his you know what and I keep it looking pretty good. If he leaves a mess and doesn't clean it up in due time I have to do it because I don't want my yard looking like junky.
Now when it comes to being mean to the dogs and mistreating them there is no faster way to just make me mad as a firecracker. If someone makes the mistake of mistreating a dog in front of me I will go of. I don't think I would be able to restrain myself. I might have to actually become violent. That is just the way I am. I love animals and especially dogs. My husband doesn't mistreat his dogs. But he knows if he ever did he would pay dearly. I do not tolerate cruelty to animals. Animals many times can't defend themselves but I can.
I composed a song about the Westmister Kennel Club and put it on CD SM
and have written poems and want to submit them, just don't know where, as I see warnings not to submit them to many publishing companies. Any good ones I can trust?
Why not use a crate so he
can sleep in the house near his humans.
crate
I was thinking about that. Because I hate to leave him because I am scared to see what he will have tore up when I come home. That is a good idea for company too because a lot of times he will growl at people he don't know. I used to put him in the extra bedroom until he tore the door up.
Hubby puts plywood board up along the outer fencing and top of the kennel then he
straw inside the kennel and make a heavy straw bed in the back and our three dogs cuddle up there. It works like a charm. When it gets to be warmer weather he just takes the plywood down and puts it away. It's an every year thing with us.
Sounds like you crate her a bit too much - sm
you also probably should not be covering the crate up so she cannot see. Visibility is a big issue with a dog. They need to see all around, sounds like you have one that is more of an enclosure with just door with visibility, not a good choice for a home crate. They should only be in a crate for 3-4 hours at at time. If you do not want the dog to have run of the house at night confine her in a room, not a crate. We use a baby gate and confine our 2 dogs in the dining room and utility room which are connected, so they have plenty of space to prowl around in. The one cannot be out in the house because it would kill our cat, the other one is fine, but still we keep them together. We have crates but I only use them for travel. Look up Matthew Margolis, he is a trainer with a newspaper column. Good luck.
Cleaning egg crate
Help! I just moved into a partially furnished mobile home. The bed has an egg crate topper on it. It has not been used for a long time - the place has been empty, on the market for long while. The previous tenant had a cat and I'm still cleaning up pet hair, including a ton of it on the bedskirt.
Anyway, the egg crate is very dusty - down in its valleys, but still in good shape, not shredding or anything. Is there anyway I can clean this thing? I thought about vacuuming it, but it would take hours because each little thing would have to be done separately. It is queen size and will not fit in the washer, but I might be able to launder it in the bathtub, then stand it upright and let it dry.
I bought a new mattress topper, but I would like to reuse/recycle this egg crate - packing material, maybe a couple of chair cushions, etc., - but it would need to be cleaned first.
Any ideas? Thanks.
How about crate training?
I have 3 dobies that I crate when they can't be trusted to obey the rules.
Agree he needs crate. He could eat something that
x
I never have used a crate in the 20 yrs of pet owning. Seemed like jail.
Take them out after each meal. Wait until they poop and applaud with joy, go immediately back into house. Take them out before sleep and first thing in morning to pee, afterwards cheer with glee. If you know what is going in, you can expect what will come out.
That is my experience.
Crates in my mind are used to spare the owner of an high energy dog. Walks will cure that. Long walks.
If no one is home all day, get up early and take him for a 30-45 minute walk and he will sleep all day awaiting your return.
Crate training is great when done right....sm
I had my dog completely potty trained before she was 12 weeks ago by using a crate and have known others to have the same success. The secret is this. Keep the puppy in the crate except for the times you take him outside to pee or to play with him. He'll learn that the crate is home and he'll not want to pee/dribble/poop etc. in it. Be sure you're taking him out every 2-3 hours during the day so he builds confidence that you'll take him out to go do his "business" then start weaning him back from there. Be sure to praise him each time he does his "business" outside and when you bring him back in, put him in his crate.
If the problem continues then have the vet check him to make sure there's not a problem with his system. More than likely it's just puppy excitedness!
Good luck with your new puppy. Also when he gets to the stage that he wants to eat your house up buy some bitter apple and spray it on your furniture. It has a scent in it that dogs don't like but you don't smell it. It also works in the yard if he starts digging.
Sounds like Bear needs a crate so you
don't come home to a destroyed house LOL. My dogs love their crates. How was the first day for you?
Originally it was for crate-training - (sm)
one of my cats who is averse to using her litterbox. In the meantime, my other cat decided this would do very nicely as her own, personal little 'condo', so she took it over. She likes it because everything is right there: Food, bed, water, & litterbox. Not to mention a great view of my birdbath outside! ;)
Train the puppy to behave OUTSIDE a crate!--sm
you and the puppy will be much happier. How would you like to be stuck inside a crate all day??!!! JMO
Dogs are denning animals. THey see crate as their den,

I need advice for crate training 10 week old puppy. Help!
.
Crate can be great tool in housebreaking and house
x
Repeat after me ... Crate training is a GOOD thing!
Invest in a good crate and use it.
The crate will cost you less than the destruction in the long run. It takes a while for the dogs to get use to it but once they are they are much happier for it.
My Rotts each have their own crates and when we have company or if they just want their own space they will go to their crate and chew on their KONG or a pigear.
Whenever I am going to be gone for any length of time I put up my Rotts and when people come to visit and ESPECIALLY when I have other folks children in my house. Mine dont see it as punishment at all and have gotten to where at night they sleep in their crates with the doors open. Although I do have to say they prefer to have Animal planet showing on their TV in their room when I am gone for any length of time.
Good Luck!!!
Yes - 7 day crate training - works perfectly in one week (sm)
google it - it works great and you dont have to swat them or scold them - they learn in one week and we never had another accident after that!
Lots of teething toys and crate training - sm
Get her a good book or a video on raising a puppy. They chew a lot with puppy teeth. Some breeds chew more than others, I had a husky that chewed a table leg, I have had a lab/shepard mix that basically ate a couch....which we ended up putting the dog in the powder room with a muzzle on during the day. Eventually we were able to unmuzzle the dog, after 2 years or so, as she got older and less destructive. Felt bad doing it but it was the only way not to have her eat the plumbing, baseboards, etc. They are also destructive when they are bored. If she leaves the dog alone constantly it is going to get into mischief. A dog is a bit respponsibility, I hope she is up for it, and if she bails I hope you can take it in.
and even if you can't afford it, still better!!!..nm
When you can afford it.

You CAN'T afford it
If you are charging things and then paying only the minimum payment, you CAN'T afford it. You are paying interest charges and that's money down the toilet. You don't say how much you owe, but you owe too much if you are carrying over charges from month to month. You are deluding yourself if you think you can afford to spend.
What does afford mean?
When you can afford something, you have the money to buy it. You don't have the money to buy it or you wouldn't be racking up credit card debt. You can only afford it if you can totally pay off your credit card every month. You seem to be living in la-la land financially, based on your posts here. This would be a really good time to get a financial education before you find yourself in big trouble.
Please, nowadays many can't *afford* them
And not talking about people on welfare here. But they all still have them, sometimes many! Selfish, IMO. Today you better be making at least 100,000 a year or at least a very high credit card limit if you want a truly happy fulfilled child who can keep up with the Joneses and have everything everyone else has these days or at least a very high credit limit. ;)
I would LOVE to be able to afford a
I'd think I had died and gone to heaven! :)
I have preteen children at home and I would NEVER have been able to do this with infants or toddlers. I try to schedule my work when my kids are at school or asleep and, on the rare occasion they are home when I am working, I have very little disruption from them. They understand mom is working.
I have recently started doing IC and although I don't have to adhere to an actual "schedule", I do what is needed in order to be the best MT I can be AND I also do what is needed in order to be the best mother/wife I can be.
Bottom line for me is professional or not, inhouse or home, if my family doesn't come first, then I feel my priorities would be greatly misdirected. :)
I do understand your point about children and disruption though. Like I said, if my children were infants/toddlers, there is no way I could do MT work in even a semi-professional (is that possible? semi-professional??? lol) way at home, unless I had someone here to take care of them while I was working.
I couldn't afford the gas - nm

I think I would tell here you just could not afford it, and state what
you can do, i.e., the week after. He is not obligated to go, especially if it is a $2000 trip with all things considered. If she cannot accept that, that is her problem. Be gracious, but just tell here there is no way to afford the trip. Or, why not just move your trip up a week, go for the entire week, and if there are not enough tickets for everyone, then your DH can go to the ceremony and the rest of you meet them afterwards.
My point exactly. He can afford it
and he should afford it. All the CEOs of all of these companies that are begging for handouts...this is what they should have to do.
All these CEOs for these companies that aren't doing good...I think they should jump on the bandwagon here. They cut our pay or pay us next to nothing, because they say the companies are not doing well...but they are not taking paycuts or cutting bonuses for upper management.
I would give them what you can afford
and if they don't like it, it's their problem. It's the thought that counts. A teenager should enjoy a gift certificate to the movies or to his/her favorite clothing store. As for the adults, my husband and I have been giving our parents gift cards to their local grocery store. Everyone needs to eat. I'm glad we don't run into these problems with our families. Everyone is happy to get something no matter how inexpensive. Try not to stress too much about it.
If anyone can really afford 14 kids, ok but
a single parent, living with her parents, breeding 14 kids and I would almost bet we are the ones really taking care of the kids, not her. I remember some time ago when my housekeeper remarked to me about her cousin having a brood, about 7 and I asked what kind of work did the mother do and when told I said, she cannot possibly take care of all those on that salary. I was told not only did she receive welfare but also section 8 for the house and my housekeeper wanted to strongly argue that this woman "takes care of her own." You don’t do that when you don’t pay for your own. I don’t know but I never got any money for raising my own kids and I resent strongly taking care of others. I think the government should do some kind of reduction on this family.
If you buy from a catelogue, then you can afford
QVC or HSN either one. I have bought from Catherine's but they are a little higher. You can get clothing all day long reasonable from the channels and no one has to complain about wearing mumus or the like. I buy almost exclusively and even have an account with HSN but like QVC better, I think.
I can only afford a Ford! LOL! (Afford a Ford?)
xx
I cannot afford the Gevalia, but
my mother gets it - it is SO expensive but she can afford it - and from time to time she gives me a box. It is wonderful, wonderful stuff. We both drink our coffee very strong, which makes it even more expensive. I can't imagine there is any better coffee anywhere.
Oxymoron indeed! LOL. Single is definitely best if you can afford it : )
x
I love it. I wish I could afford someone every week.
It is just a huge relief when I don't have to do that heavy cleaning once a week. We have 2 dogs too and the dog hair drives me nuts!
Can you afford to have a mother's helper SM
Come into your home for 2 to 3 hours a day? Maybe she could play with your son and do "school" with him (art, puzzles, colors, shapes). It would be similar to having a 1:1 aide like some children require in public school. Maybe she could let him be her helper baking cookies. She can praise him for being such a big helper.
He might feel really special having extra attention. Then, if he got too out of hand, she could take him for a walk or take him to a safe room where he could play (or throw a fit) where it won't interrupt your time with your other children.
Having a high-strung child is very exhausting. You love them but find yourself resenting them a lot of the time too. It would be doubly hard from someone like yourself who is with them 24/7. You need a break from him, and he needs a break from you too.
Big hugs...I'm sorry you're going through this. Next time he acts up, give him a hug and tell him you love him. Maybe try cuddling with him for a few minutes until he calms down. It's worth a shot! LOL...although that might train him to want to throw fits so mama will cuddle with him.

How can anyone afford a luxury like a facial
I can't even keep food in my fridge or gas in my tank!

What a load of manure.
Can't afford to be hooked to anything, except typing right now!!!

Owning a pet is a privilege, not a right. If you can't afford health
;
Can you afford at least a 50% paycut? Here in the SE, our teacher's aides don't sm
make more than 10.00 per hour and that is for experienced TAs. You will probably start out at 7.50 to 8.00 an hour.
But, if you just need a little spending money and think that your peace of mind is worth that much in pay, then you should go for it.
I'm a great advocate in doing what you love most in order to be happy in life. Have a dream or vision and then go after it no matter what it takes. Those kind of people live the healthiest, happiest lives. Good luck to you!
I say go for it. If I could afford to work outside somewhere making less than $10 per hour
I'd get out of this field in a second :)
