so, she just started college and now you hear from her.

I forgot! My MIL is almost 67 and has just started college. sm
She is going for her history degree. She's doing it right--she is taking classes for free since she's older than 65. She didn't finish high school even, but she is very intelligent.
About 60 for me, but only weighed 98
when I finished high school.
I'm 5' 9" and would have to be hospitalized if I weighed 110.

short arms, short-term memory loss...
I too suffer from Short Arm Syndrome. Add to that the short-term memory loss that middle-age brings and I have now discovered I need to lasso the &*%$ reading glasses around my neck or my day will be spent wandering in circles asking the dog where my glasses are.

I have two pairs, per advice of doctor. I do not wear glasses all the time, so he thought I was not ready for bifocals. My son gave me a wonderful eyeglass case for Christmas that is big enough to hold both pairs should I ever venture out of the house amongst the living.

I did manage to find some "sporty" looking around-the-neck-eye glass holder thingies - what DO you call those things? I'd use twine before getting those multicolored beaded ones. I have a neon coral one and an emerald green one. Too bad I can't find the former, I can't remember where I put it.
SKINNY!!!
I thought she looked horrible, maybe it was the dress she had on but I think she has lost a LOT of weight.
Never been skinny - sm
Well I have never in my life been skinny, but I can tell you that I am very happy, and very hippy.  I do not know if it has anything to do with my size or not, but if I want an icecream sunday for dinner, I have it.  Not every day of course, that would be crazy, but my point is I do not worry about whether I am going over my calories or points for the day, I worry more whether my family and I are enjoying life to its fullest and are all healthy.  I am sure if my weight were to effect my health that I would rethink this attitude, but so far I am completely healthy (praies God).
What do you consider skinny?....
I am 5 foot 71/2 inches, 132 pounds, BMI of 22..but some would call that fat by today's standards. I am 47 and have maintained this since being a teenager, other than 3 pregnancies. I would rather eat properly and get exercise than worry about having health problems associated with being overweight.
I actually gasped when I saw her. She looks very skinny.
.
Yup, there are skinny women
who have 2 teeth and a moustache who can't seem to climb up the evolutionary rung so I would say that statement was false. If I understood the odd statement...LOL
Haven't started shopping yet, but have started saving $$$
Don't have an awful lot yet, but both hubby and I are doing it (separate accounts) so we should have a good amount when we combine. My goal is to start shopping in September after my daughter's birthday and finish by Thanksgiving. That's my goal. I have never reached it! Maybe this year!
And FYI, the thread we are posting in right now was one I started, you started the earlier one. nm

Well, I'm right in the middle, not skinny just healthy
I've never really been skinny, I'm too curvy to ever be skinny, but I'm at a healthy weight (bmi of 21) and very happy with my body. I pretty much eat whatever I want, just know I need to exercise more if I eat high-calorie/high-fat foods. I've been overweight but was miserable and decided to make a change, definitely much happier now.
Fake, skinny. Don't have much space...sm

but I didn't want table size tree.  Got it last year and was really amazed at how pretty it turned out.

Well my son doesn't like girls to be too skinny lol (sm)
He always says the Victoria's Secret models are way too skinny. And I am not a small person, so I guess that could be why?
you don't have to be skinny to have an eating disorder
and even though it sounds like you hurt your metabolism you CAN lose weight. it's all about calories in, calories out.
Skinny versus Plump - who is happier?

Well I reckon this will start some fires...Hope I don't get burned.

In your experience, ladies and gentlemen, who is happier?  Skinny people who are afraid of a calorie/carb/fat gram?  Or plump, curvy individuals?

Having been skinny once upon a time and now having more curves than a country mountain road, I have to say I like myself so much better now that I weigh more.  It has been an experience, I tell you that much.

So what do you all think?

HC.

I haven't started yet, but have started my lists.
The only reason I haven't started yet is because of $$$. But I have started some good lists for the kids and the DH. I actually have some good ideas for him this year (he is hard to buy for).

I'm like you, I love Christmas but hate the commercialism of it. We were at Costco a while back looking for Halloween costumes and they already had their Christmas stuff out. They always make me feel like I'm already late on my shopping!

I may do a lot of online shopping this year. It's easier with little ones. My 2yo is more aware this year so taking him with me to buy his own presents is out. Darn!

It always seems that Halloween (my favorite) takes forever to get here, but once it's over, then the holiday rush is on.

Happy Holidays everyone!
False. I'm sure there are plenty of skinny dim bulbs living in poverty
s
Definitely short ones
I love in Fridays when my doc does all his patients that were tested for allergies that week.
Short. Not in the least bit Jewish.
x
hopefully this will be short-lived
I'd still send pictures, etc., especially to your grandparents. Good luck!
My hair is very short right now.
Short layers and all I have to do is spray a little hairspray on it and run my fingers through it and I'm good to go.  It has gotten much thicker over the years and hair color has helped with that too.  I hate that I have to color my hair, though.  I started going gray almost 20 years ago and I just turned 40.    At some point, I will bite the bullet and let the color grow out, but haven't gotten there yet.  Not ready to be totally gray.
My hair is short
When it starts to get even a little long, I have to go out and get it cut. I don't like the way my hair or the way I look when it gets too long. I just put some gel in it and go. The only thing I don't like is that it can get dry in the sun. I've been dying my hair for about five years or so (46 now). I won't let it go gray, but that's just me. My daughter is only 4 so I feel I would look like her grandmother if I let it go gray.
My 8 y/o is a size 5, but she's SHORT...
for her age! I really hope she grows into her feet soon, looks like she has clown feet :) She's only 4 ft 3 in., but has some of the biggest feet for her age.
I have only seen short segments
as I am flipping through channels and man, is that show filthy!  Is the story line that good?
Long and short of it -
While I can appreciate his desire to stop spending so much time in his car, I think the solution he is suggesting would only be very good in the short term at the most. The reality is you all probably need to sell your house and move closer to his job.
I always wanted to be short in HS, like
most of our little cheerleaders were. Now I see my height as an advantage, and i have to admit that even my freakishly long arms do come in handy. Funny how priorities change ...
My dad short-tempered and
was always yelling and pounding tables and children about the dumbest things, and mom was cold, bored and depressed, so it's hard to say.

It's so hard to shop for Mother's & Father's Day cards!
for short people
why is it the one item i need is on the very top shelf so far back i cannot reach it?

Life is too short
Unfortunately, life is actually way too long to be very, very poor, old and alone, and if you can't get along with anyone when you are young, you are not going to be that hot of a catch at the nursing home.
my short list
Milk
Liver
Okra
Tofu
Indian food
Thai food
Sushi

my short list sm
Lima beans
soft-cooked eggs (where the yolks are too runny and the whites aren't quite firm - and forget any with the shell accidentally left in)
fishy-tasting fish
Chicken/turkey liver (beef and deer is okay)
raw onions
big gobs of mayonnaise (a little in salad is okay)
tuna without celery.

I did it about 3 years ago for a short while.

I quit because it was too much of a hassle.  I had to buy the magazines, brochures, samples every 2 weeks plus get orders in every 2 weeks, plus I had to deliver with baby in tow, but you could have them pick their orders up at your house but with so many reps in this area, I had to be competitive.    My friend I buy Avon from was having problems the company not sending the right orders, getting things mixed up etc etc.  It is just a mess for her so she dropped it.

The pro side of it was that when I sold Avon I got pretty good bargains being a rep.  They send a What's New brochure every 2 weeks.  There are people here that order merchandise and open their own store and sell it that way.  I don't know if they are making profit or not.   I do think the real money is in recruiting people to sell like other MLMs.  It really doesn't make sense to me to do things that way though.  It would be like having a shoe store selling Nike's on every corner.  Just doesn't make sense.

college son
I agree - take the phone away!  My son's first away job was at age 18.  He was sent to NYC Kennedy Airport as his base (flight attendant).  We live in a tiny little town in IL.  Of course, I wanted him to be safe, blah, blah, blah.  First phone bille I got was over $200.00.  His dad gave him a credit card for emergencies - first bill was over $3000.00 - you guessed it.  Took both away.  Got him a number to call home with, no one else. Phone companies do that somehow.  Dad started sending a fixed amount (flight attendants are paid terrible wages in the beginning)  Fifteen years later, he is an extremely successful hair stylist with his own hair product line in Spr. Illinois.  You have to do something now or you will be broke, he will waste a year at school and they will probably make it or break it no matter what you do.  Hang in there!  He WILL grow up!
college son
I could have written that same thing except this is my daughter and her boyfriend is a loser. Dont like him and havent even met him. She goes to a junior college where we live and works PT. He on the other hand does not go to school and does not have a job. When will it end. Any advice.
college son
My son's spree ended when he was 27.  He spent years "finding his niche."  Flight attendant, waiter, retail clerk.  Constantly broke, moving absolutely continually between IL, NY, IA and MO.  Drove us nuts.  After a few moves, I stopped helping with moves - "if you want to move, get your friends to help."  After bleeding his dad (we were divorced, then he died) and my mom (you know the ask grandma thing) practically dry, he finally had to grow up.  Went to hair college in Iowa and has been working his tail off ever since.  It took him years to mature, years of poor choices, years of being poor to finally realize that his life was up to him, not anyone else.  He is now totally responsible - I am so proud of him.  For the past 2 years in a row, he has earned the Iliinois Times "Springfield's Best" title for hair stylist.  Quite an honor.  Your son will be okay.  Some young guys don't make college on the first try and have to do it again a few years later.  Hang in there.
College vs. not
I am a year away from graduating with a Bachelors in psychology with counseling. I'm pretty sure it will be useful, but there is no way of knowing now.

However,

My husband just graduated in May 2008 with his History degree. This week he finally got a job, and more than likely he could have gotten it without a degree (managing a sports store), but I am sure it helped, since he doesn't have a lot of retail experience.

I think it's kind of a 50/50 deal. You could get a degree, and never need it. Or you could get one and not need it until later on in your career when you want to move up. Or you could not get it and get blocked for all kinds of jobs.

In the end I would probably do college over again just because I love learning.
Anyone out there going to college at age 40? sm
I am considering about ditching the MT scene once my children graduate from high school (in 7 years).  I am currently 42 years old and considering going for a Bachelors in computers.  Anyone else doing this?
If you are going to be in the house such a short time sm
You will build up almost NO equity with a 40-year mortgage, and may have to sell it at a loss. Something to consider....
okay - found it - short story
this year it is too late.  They are in the house for the winter and laying next year's crop in your attic - supposed to spray outside the house eaves and foundation included in the fall to prevent any new ones.
Life is short. Who knows what could happen? Go for it! NM

Short story about ATVs

A woman I know was riding one with her 2 y/o grandson.  She was turning on the 4-wheeler when it kicked into high gear and wouldn't slow down.  They were heading right for a tree. Basically she had to jump off while holding onto her 2 y/o grandson. The 4-wheeler then ran into a tree and did some major damage.  Thankfully, no one was hurt and she did the right thing by jumping, but still.  They found out that whoever had put the 4-wheeler together before they bought it had done something wrong and when she turned it caused a wire to do something weird and it made it go fast and wouldn't brake.  I can't remember exactly what they said happened, but if she hadn't jumped, she would have run right into a tree at full speed with her 2 y/o grandson.

Also, there was a young kid....about 5 or 6....who was killed about a month ago on an ATV.  His older brother was driving and something happened and the kid hit his head and was killed.  Had he had a helmet on, he probably would have lived.

When my stepson has a friend over, we always ask the parent's permission before we allow them to ride our 4-wheelers and we always make sure they have on a helmet.  Asking permission is just common courtesy.

OMG Yes!!!!! It's a conspiracy against short people!

I get so aggravated!  And then it never fails you go looking for someone who can help you or has a ladder and no one is EVER working on the floor!  At Wal-Mart, I've grabbed one of those ladders they have hanging on posts throughout the store and climbed up myself to get something of the top shelf.  THEN an employee appears and tells me I can't do that because it's a liability to the store.  I said, "then you need to be out here doing you job so I don't have to!"

Man, being short sucks!

Life is too short to be married
to someone I am unhappy with and especially, not in love with. I would not cheat but would be honest about my feelings and get out of the marriage. Before acting on anything, I would make sure I was divorced as should he. People will get hurt unfortunately, but I could never stay in a marriage knowing I loved someone else or I was unhappy. Life is too short and goes by too quickly. I want no regrets.

People will not like this answer but it's how I feel.
but short on compassion and caring.
x
Life is short and you only get one go-round.
Is this what you wanted out of life? No marriage is perfect, but being faithful is a basic requirement, not to mention the deadly diseases out there. That's all I'll say other than to add, you're much stronger than I am & I hope it all works out for you & you find happiness & peace, one way or the other.
I bite my nails, so I get them done short..
they are really not too long, but look better than when I have chewed them all off. Terrible habit, I know, but a very difficult one to break. I quit smoking and didn't really think it was that hard, but I just cannot stop chewing my nails!
cute short clip
Upon looking up dysphagia today (yes I know that's pretty simple, but I always have brain freeze with phagia and phasia (especially when they mean phagia but pronounce it with the "s" sound).

Anyway, I came across this cute little film short. It's 16 minutes long but was cute and wanted to share it.

http://www.atom.com/funny_videos/fluent_dysphasia/

Not to mention I love the actor Stephen Rea.

But I'm short, stocky, and heavyset, so....sm
It's all relative. And my legs are too thick to know whether I'm bowlegged or not. :D :D

In my younger days, I would have sold my two front teeth to have a figure approximating Michelle's. To be slender and willowy, any height, was my wildest fantasy. These days, I'm just glad to be able to walk, run, and jump, forget about the looks part....:D
