Towels and sheets are the one load

Posted By: Misha on 2007-07-21
In Reply to: fabric softener - sm

I never use softner sheets on because it seems like there is a waxy coating on them that I don't like. They don't seem as absorbent or clean-feeling. I take my own towels with me when I travel because at people's houses they feel coated with wax, and at hotels they have that fishy odor sometimes, like school gym towels - ugh. I think that smell comes from using bleach but then not drying them thoroughly before stacking. Yuck.

Anyone that has a GE washer top load that has any comments on GE versus Whirlpool top load. nm
:
towels
Hydrogen peroxide the kind in the brown bottle. Keeps whites clean and takes out tons of stains including blood stains.
towels
I read somewhere recently (I think Heloise) about using vinegar in either the wash or the rinse? Maybe she has a website where you could get the exact info.
Did that with towels
I bought 4 different colors, two of each as I feel you can use a towel twice before it has to be washed after showering and I wash every 4 days or so.  That way no one wondered which towel they had used the day before, etc.  Much easier to keep track of also when they all land on the floor and yet all I heard was "it isn't my towel."  I am the color coding queen between work and home.
That's what paper towels are for...
or even toilet paper...I flush with my foot, no way am I touching handle, and never open the door with my bare hands. There was a study once showing that the most common germs on money, shopping cart handles, and restroom door handles was fecal matter!
Getting towels clean
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get towels to smell clean again.  I've tried various detergents, Borax, hot water, cold water, hanging to dry, dryer sheets and nothing seems to work.  I wash my towels, we use them once or twice and they just don't smell fresh anymore.  Also after we use them we hang them on a towel rack to let the fresh air dry them.  My husband hates the bleach smell so don't use that.
fresh towels
I use Gain detergent, the regular kind. Has a really nice smell. We live by ocean so our towels get musty smelling quite easily.
including towels?
this brightens and whitens towels and washcloths? I love white in the bathroom, but avoid it as it gets dingy so fast.
Whirlpool top load
Bought one brand new when we bought our home 5 years ago. It did not work right from day 1. It would go to fill with water but never shut off. They repaired it for free, but then we had other problems with it. It is hanging on by a thread. Next time I am going for a Maytag. Just need to save up for it.
I'm now on my 4th load, and that little washer is - sm
chugging happily away. Meanwhile, I found a way to have the drain tube (empties out in the kitchen sink) do double-duty. You know how you end up with plates that need pre-soaking (or even pre-washing, BEFORE you wash them? Like forks with sticky cheese on them, knives with cat or dog food, plates with God-knows-what on them, and cereal bowls with that petrified combination of sugar and cereal that could easily be used a mortar when constructing brick walls? Well, I just put the offending dishes in the sink, and when the washer empties a tubful of hot, semi-soapy 'gray' water, I've got the drain hose aimed right at those dishes. By the time the laundry is done, and I'm ready to tackle the dishes, it'll take half the time, dish-detergent, and elbow-grease to get them clean, because the job will already be half-done!

:D
Ditch the paper towels... sm

Instead of using paper towels/napkins at mealtime, we use linen napkins.  If we happen to eat fast food (we usually bring it home), we always keep the extra napkins to use later.

Also, you can use vinegar and water and newspapers to replace Windex/paper towels when doing windows/mirrors/faucets around the house.

my mom would stash paper towels and - sm
toilet paper. When she died I counted 86 rolls of TP and about 30 paper towels, also about 15 boxes each of zip lock bags, quart, gallon, freezer bags. My dad and I divvied it all up between him, me and my two brothers. If it was on sale at the store my mom bought it. Had about 18 pounds of butter in the refrigerator too, as well as cheese, and about 80 packs of Hershey chocolates (they were hidden in a closet). Was a bit OC on the TP and PT though, and every night she would check all the doors to make sure they were locked at least 4 x before she would go to bed. Always made enough food that is for sure. My MIL goes either one way or the other, we never know until we get there though. No snacks so it if is a sparse dinner then we end up going home hungry and stopping on the way to get something, or the kids fill up on the dessert I bring. Stayed home this year though, and my BIL is cooking for them this year, and I cooked for us.
It was not just about the sheets

Me too, takes a few seconds to load...nm
a
Annoying, but the time to load is now
taking longer than 15-20 seconds, about 30. Hope it gets better soon.
Drinkwell/Work Load, 11:30, CST

I have one.  The 3 cats go between that and the Easter/Halloween "bucket."  Thanks for the idea, tho.

She's rallied, then hides.  I'm watching her big-time. If necessary, I'll take her to my $$$$ vet--but he's worth EVERY penny.  Of course, she has a fit when I try to give her the Clavamox/Amoxicillin pills.  Although they're out-dated, they're in the sealed, air-tight thingies. Of course, that's making her nauseated as well.

I really appreciate all these kind suggestions!

Incidentally, is anyone getting any (more) work?  I'm in tne South Region, and things look pitiful!

I use up a roll of paper towels every 2 days. And
s
I hate the hard towels too, but figure - sm
what I will do is dry them outside, and just fluff them in the dryer for 5 minutes to soften them. Best of both worlds that way.
fitted sheets--sm
I understand what you mean. Measure not only the height of the mattress, but measure the length, as well. California King sets vary in the length, I believe.

I had run into a problem when I bought a queen-sized pillow top. Mine measures 21 inches in height. Try and find oversized fitted sheets for that, which do not cost almost $300! I finally found some at 22 inches and they stay on very well. Prior to that, I had to buy 20 inch sheets and use the elastic clips, which look like garters, across all four corners. Those helped too.
I have turned those sheets every which way
but loose, have about 3 sets and nothing has been working. I am making notes of all these answers and check the mattress out. It is huge and thick so have to get the measuring tape out.
Boy you pay a lot for sheets! - I have a king - sm
that is a 12" thick mattress and I have 3 sets of sheets for the bed, and I know I did not pay more than $40-$50 for my "deep" pocket sheets (I have 2 sets of those) at JC Penney's. Shop around you can still get good quality and not pay through the nose.
Followup to getting sheets to fit
What would I do without all this wonderful information? I took the information about measuring the mattress. I measured the width and length. They were Cal Kings and I had been buying the regular king and kept getting popped during the night with those sheets pulling off. A relief is here! I got Cal King and lo and behold, I have slept for the past 2 nights in perfect bliss. No more pulling away from the corners. Thanks to all for the suggestions!
Maybe dryer sheets between the
pages? That's a lot of dryer sheets.

When I was recently car shopping, looking at used cars, there was only one I sat in and instantly got out of due to that smell. They should Febreze a car before they show it to prospective buyers.
Did anyone load the new Int. Explorer 7 in your windows update yet.

Have an 18 y/o Whirlpool, top load, large capacity - sm
not one lick of trouble (knock on wood)--got it with the house (it was 10 then). Have all Whirlpool appliances except for the stove; all are 18-y/o and working great. Very reliable.
that's the viral load - takes 2 weeks I think....sm

That's the one i was talking about - the hep C HCV-RNA....that's the viral load and as I recall, I think that's a 2-week test, but I could be wrong...(I am the one from the prior threat who has it and was posting with you last week and have this test yearly) - anyway - try to relax and perhaps the nurses/assistants don't even know this test takes 2 weeks IF THEY SENT IT FROZEN...I remember they couldn't do the test because it was not frozen.....at one point.  Now, when I go, I make sure to ask *does that go frozen or not?*

Can you rub fabric softner sheets on it?

I do that with my animals actually to help them with the static in winter.  Or a spray bottle with water and some liquid fabric softner squirted over things.  Easier and cheaper than 'Static Guard' in a can.

Good luck and congrats on your new furniture!

bounce dryer sheets?
But, I don't know what it does to the paint...maybe someone else will chime in or maybe Google will have the answer :o)
Our GE top load purchased thru Sears has been nothing but trouble. Could be because of hard

I guess he is smart, he is making a load of money I am sure!
x
Well, I can make a load of money too if I wanted to get into porn. and
having relations with other people, including women. It's a multi-billion dollar a year industry. It doesn't make it right. I can go and rob a bank tomorrow and make a ton of money, but it doesn't make it right.

I like what the Bible says about it - a decent man will make his money with an honest living.
$300 for SHEETS? Try Wal-Mart, Target, or Ross!
.
fabric softener anyone? Bounce sheets?

so towels do get that musty odor.......but I find fabric softener works REALLY well.......no complaints so far

oh and I use TIDE with bleach (also works on colored clothes) for washing......(but I love the smell of Gain, just think Tide washes better)

Thanks for the idea!! Never thought of the softner sheets! nm
x
sheets or liquid fabric softener?
do you find that one is better than the other with line drying?
Does anyone have any good links for homeschool sheets for 1st grade? sm
I am now homeschooling my 1st grader, but didn't want to "buy" a cirriculum.  I was hoping to find some websites online I could use as kind of a guide and print out some worksheets from.  TIA!
Think what you need are called deep pocket sheets. Try Linens n Things, Bed and Bath, JCP. nm
s
This native NYorker agrees! Nice restaurant meal & clean sheets
s
Fabric softener makes towels softer, yes, but it also makes them less absorbent. sm
Which is, after all, the function of a towel, absorbency. :-)
