You are not alone.  I am the same way.  I think a lot of it is genetic.  Some people are really outgoing and some aren't.  I've learned to accept the way I am even though I absolutely cringe if I have to be in a large group or social situation, i.e. a wedding and wish I didn't absolutely hate it.  I think the way to make more friends and build self esteem is to get out and join some clubs with people who share  your interests, whatever they may be or perhaps take an evening class.  Sometimes you do have to force yourself to make the effort.  I don't believe my basic personality will ever change but that's ok.  It's the way God made me!   Just know you are not alone, there are lots of "us" out there who feel the same way.  Email me if you would like to talk.
