Throwing out the baby with the bath water

Posted By: AnnuderMT on 2009-06-17
In Reply to: Heh. Try military medicine - Pugmom

It seems somehow kinda wrong to determine that the health care is good enough for our military but I sure as heck don't want it for me. It's like those situations where instead of increasing standards all around to make something to be proud of, you lower the standards to the least common denominator. There is no reason not to use the military system and fix what's wrong with it rather than determine that it won't work. My girls were delivered in naval hospital, had surgery in naval hospitals, saw Navy doctors, etc., etc. The care my family received through them in wait times, time spent with patient, treatment, etc., was no worse than it was when we belonged to Kaiser years later.

Hope you do well, I'm thinking of you!
I like an inside water fountain or a water wall. Saw it on

just throwing some ideas out there
will she be undergoing any sort of treatment that could possibly cause alopecia? how about some bandanas? what about some nice bath oils, lotions, maybe a gift certificate for a massage or manicure?
Cats throwing up - sm

Have 6 cats in the house, all on the same dry food. No matter which brand of dry food we use, the cats take turns throwing up their food usually just after eating it.  Sometimes there will be a hairball within, but usually just the food. I put out 6 separate bowls as well as water. If anyone has had this problem and have any ideas to help with it, I would appreciate knowing.

Thank you.

Throwing yourself a housewarming is tacky...(sm)

Oh my....  Do NOT register for gifts.  That's just so incredibly tacky.  If someone asks you what they can bring you or what you'd like or where you are registered, the ONLY proper answer is to say, 'Oh no, please... We'd just like to have our (dear friends/new neighbors) over to help us celebrate our new home.  Your presence is present enough!'  If they bring something, then they bring something.  But to register for gifts is just too tacky.  A housewarming party is NOT a wedding shower!

A housewarming is for you to serve your guests food and drink as a way to show your home to your friends and meet your neighbors, not as a way to grub for gifts... which is exactly what you're doing if you're even giving ideas for gifts when someone asks!  Truly, if someone asks you what to buy, you need to act horrified by the mere thought that guests to a housewarming would need to buy you something.

Okay, I just found a great link.  You really need to read this. http://rebecca576.tripod.com/etiquettebyrebecca/id60.html

If someone invites me to a housewarming and then says what I suggested above, I'd certainly bring something because I was raised not to attend any sort of party without bringing a little gift for the hostess, be it a bottle of wine or a platter of brownies or a nice plant.  But if someone were tacky enough to register for a housewarming? Oh no... I wouldn't even come.

Why are people throwing their lives away?
I am up in years, have worked a total of 50 years now (yeh, started really young) and still working. My mother could not afford to send me to college and years ago I did not believe I was college material. I did, thank goodness, find transciption, always extremely fast typist (self-taught by the way at 12) and good speller, hey what more can you want? Anyway, back to my post. What in the world is going on when highly educated people in high paying jobs being so dense as to try to pull off crimes that get them jail, prison time, fired from their jobs, and on and on. I just do not get this at all. Just when you think you have heard it all on the news, you hear something crazier! I have never been arrested, don’t want to be, try to live a decent life and would not think twice about trying to pull something that would compromise the way I lead my life. What are they thinking??
Cat gourging, throwing up, need input
I was reading the thread below about the Maine coon. Mine is just a run of the mill type cat but she sounds about the same. She is older, has hair that you can just sorta halfway tug a little and out it comes so when she throws up she has these hairball type things. She wants to eat all the time and yet she is barfing a lot, it seems. She does not act sick but I never knew about cats having acid reflux and can they actually take Pepcid and would that help them? Any input I definitely will read and pay attention to all info. Thanks!
Follow up on cat gorging and throwing up

Posted a few days ago, had Ms. Thang to the veterinarian's office today and he thought possibly hyperthyroidism because of extremely fast heartbeat, hair loss, the 3 pounds weight loss since the end of last year- labs done and sure nuff, hyperthyroidism. Vicious cycle of the gorging, throwing up, seemingly never getting enough to eat- hopefully now with medication can get this under control.

You're throwing me right back into the 70's...

I loved Schoolhouse Rock!  Now, I've gotta see if the library has those DVDs!  They're as good now as they were then.  Glad your kids are enjoying learning....I sure did!

Below is a play on words.   Cat

Isn't it throwing the first hand of dirt onto the casket
Putting their body to rest, they loved ones toss the first handful of dirt? Maybe I am wrong.

Can't even imagine how Anna N. mother could walk on her daughter's freshly dug grave, never heard of such a thing.

There was a reason A.N. Smith was like she was and her mother may have been big part of it. That she had a multimillionaire daughter who didn't share the loot with her must probably made the woman insulted. Unevenly distributed wealth distorts close family relationships like nothing else can.
Do you have really hard water? Maybe leaving water spots from lime, calcium, etc.? Or are the spots

Throwing a party - can anyone steer me to a website than will give (sm)
how-tos on planning a party for about 40 people?  Very, very new at this.  It is combining an 18-year-old BDay and going-away for 2 daughters who are getting deployed to Iraq again.   Planning for outside (have a large tent).  Needs tips on best (reasonably priced) food and decorations.  Thank You.
I have seen them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond....
or it may be Linens and Things in your area.
What do you use to bath him? - sm
My min-pin was always itching and scratching and rubbing on anything he could. Then the vet told me to use baby shampoo on him, and it worked. Plus I only bath him like every other month or so. Gets a little stinky, but I love him anyways. I don't usually give him a bath until his coat starts to look not so shiny. Seems to have worked so far.
Not until after his bath, LOL.
He just came out of the shelter and I can hardly wait for him to be clean.

But oh does he appreciate belly scritches.

He is such a good boy.
LOL the bath tub
I JUST thought of doing that. I'm sitting here telling myself my husband will think I have completely lost it if he comes home to see I have filled every empty jug in the house with water and the bath tub!!! lol I'm doing it anyway. Glad I'm not the only one to think of that.

We are also in MI. I keep thinking back to the other ice storm we had a few years back and the blackout where there was no gasoline or anything. Scary stuff but I would just like to try to prepare this time around if I can. As soon as I finish up here I'm working off your list. Some really great ideas to catch up laundry, charging batteries, etc. Thanks!
Have you tried a cool bath. sm
I have also heard rubbing the child down with alcohol helps.  Prayers going up for your baby.
Old dog getting stinky - even the day after a bath! (nm)

Bath and Body sm
My DH got me some B/B red leather collection stuff, makeup bag, manicure/pedicure set (awesome) and a little purse which came with Moonlight Path shower gel and body lotion. I already had the overnight bag and the tote. I just can't get enough of that red - I'm a bling, bling girl all the way!!!
Bath and teeth

Maybe it's the toothpaste.  Some of it tastes yucky to a kid or the mint may be too strong or brushing could be irritating his gums.  Let him pick a child's toothpaste and soft toothbrush and see if that helps.  As for baths,  I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the tub.  What mom didn't know was that my older sister kept sneaking in and pulling the plug, telling me I was going to go down the drain. She said if I told mom she would call the adoption agency and tell them to take me back (I wasn't adopted, but at age 4 I didn't know that).  Maybe he saw something on TV that scared him.   Some shows are pretty graphic (news too). I recall one show where a lady was brushing her teeth and blood started pouring from the faucet. Try letting him sit in a dry tub with a bucket of water for a sponge bath.  Sit down and talk with the kid (not talk to) and assure him/her that if there is something going on you can help.

Why did they say your dog needed a bath?
I just throw my collie mix outside when it rains and maybe take him to the groomer 2 or 3 times a year. If he was rolling around in mud and dead animals, that would be different.
How did an innocent bubble bath
This discussion the strangest thing I have ever heard in my life!  My husband uses body butter from Bath and Body Works, but he's not gay, and he is very, very masculine.  He just has dry skin and cares about his appearance.  I'd prefer clean and fresh, then nasty, stinky, unkempt with dirty fingernails.  I don't think there is anything wrong with a man caring about his appearance.  To each his own I guess.
I like the ones from Bath and Body called
socks to sleep in. They are so soft and so warm. My feet are also constantly freezing. I wear slippers all winter long. I have some, the brand is "old Friend" and they are leather with sheep skin in them. Your feet do not get sweaty, just toasty warm. I go through a pair every year because I wear them until it is about 70 degrees outside.
Rock. Bath or shower?

Pedi. Bath or shower?

Bath/shower gel? Pair of earrings?
Nightgown/pajamas?  Gloves/ scarf?  Candle?  CD or DVD?  Purse?  Movie tickets?
I haven't tried the cool bath or the compresses yet.
I will try those and see if it helps to break the fever.  Thanks so much for the replys.
Buy one of those bathtubs and fill them up with bath toys sm
and baby towels, washcloths, Johnson & Johnson stuff, etc.

Or buy one of those dishwashwer tubs that fit into the dishwasher that holds nipples, pacifiers, etc and wrap that up in a baby bath towel with a big bow on it.
Get a basket and fill it up with onesies, socks, kits that include medicines, etc.

I love going to baby showers and creating unique gifts!
tub bath outside in sun or cozy in front of fire
!
If you have a bath and body works locally, try...sm
their shower gels and body butter in whatever fragrance you prefer.  I too have such dry skin that it cracks and bleeds, especially on my hands and feet.  I can write on the skin on my arms and legs it gets so dry, and my face looks like a road map if I don't moisturize.  I also have very sensitive skin, but the perfumes they use don't seem to bother my skin.  I use the Neutragena Wave foaming cleansing pads on my face and then use the body butter.  Also try not to take really hot showers, the heat is very hard on the skin, and make sure you pat dry, not rub as that tears the skin.  Apply the body butter first thing in the morning, right out of the shower and again right before you go to bed.  That may seem like a lot, but it does not take much of the body butter.  I use it usually about 3 times a day, sometimes more on my hands, and mine still lasts quite a while.
I wasn’t clear enough, I meant when others bath your furkids
Sorry..
Don't use alcohol. Fumes are no good. Just playing in a coolish bath while
s
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. LOL. I get that from Bath and Body Works. sm
Seems like the minute I run out of a fave scent and go to get more, it has been discontinued. I think it is a conspiracy by Bath and Body works. LOL.
Think what you need are called deep pocket sheets. Try Linens n Things, Bed and Bath, JCP. nm
s
Bath and Body Works gift certificate or basket can't go wrong for a girl. sm
i made a basket for my brother one year. i had no clue either, but he seemed to really like it. i did a "night at the movie" theme. filled the basket with snack things since all men i know like to snack, lol. i put in there popcorn, pringles, candy bars, fudge, drinks, gift certificates to Blockbuster, etc. men also like games like checkers, chess, dominoes, poker, etc so maybe a nice poker set or something?
Some say it's the water...
and they are cooked in salted water - some are not. They have a crusty-hard outside and a moist middle. And they're huge. They really are the best! :)
Ice Water, sm
Soak apples in ice water and a little salt. Kabobs would be a great idea but not sure about the wooden skewers.
no where to put the water?
ever consider the toilet? Lot's of other nasty stuff goes down ther:)
Yes, usually when I get water in my ear, that happens.
I put a few drops of alcohol in my ear and it goes away.
Water is not the only --sm
source of fluoride though. It is in our toothpastes, mouthwashes, and probably a number of other items you would never suspect. You have to be proactive and check labels on EVERY thing to avoid it. This forced consumption of fluoride brings to mind the long suppressed addictiveness of nicotine in tobacco and the health implications that caused. I feel sometimes that having fluoride forced upon the unwitting public could possibly be in the same category. Flouride is in all actuality a rat poison, used many years ago for that reason only. It hardens bones (osteoporosis??) but I am doubtful about any other health *benefits* of it. I think there are many more risks involved in its use than the unwitting public will ever be made aware of and a lot of information about it being suppressed as well.
Some ants come in for water as much
or more than food. I have heard they don't like to walk thru talcum powder. You can put a circle of it around pet water bowls if that is the draw for them. See if you can find where they are coming in, both the inside entry point and the outside. Plug holes with silicone caulk or expanding caulk like STUFF. A natural product is diamateous earth (not the kind used for pools, though). Use only outside, or it may be okay in crawlspace, but not sure. You don't want to breathe it, so wear a mask while pouring. Once it is down it harmless to people and pets, but when hard-bodied insects walk through it, the texture tears their exoskeletons up and kills them. But it is washed away by rain, so very expensive. Depends on how rainy your climate is as to whether it will work for you.
If they get caught, off goes their water!

Have my shutters open this morning and I see my next door neighbor starting to water her lawn. We are in a drought really bad here and the water is being rationed, so to speak. No one waters on Sunday (and Sunday as I write) and we have an odd, even day system when we do water through the week. Atlanta, which is close by, has gone to a 1 day a week watering system. Some places in my state have turned off water to people caught abusing this. I remember in the 80s we had such a drought our showers were limited to 5 minutes. I would hope it does not get that bad again.

They use saline, right? Not just water.
Saline sprays don't bother me at all.
hot water cornbread

WARNING:  I do everything by eye....a pinch here, a smidgeon there...I just throw it all in a bowl and guesstimate.

Ya make 'em kinda like pancakes in a cast iron skillet on the stove and it doesn't heat the house up as much as baking.

Boil at least a cup of water in the microwave

Put about 1 to 2 cups of self-rising cornmeal in a bowl.  Add 1 beaten egg and mix thoroughly.  Then you add the boiling water in bits, slowly mixing it until the right consistency....not thin like pancakes.... kinda like what you would make for regular cornbread almost.

Heat skillet with about 1/8 to 1/4 inch oil heated med to med/hi.... then use a good sized serving spoon to dollop the mixture into the pan.  Watch carefully and try not to burn

DO NOT, under any circumstances use jiffy mix.

After 25 years I've finally gotten it nearly right (darn Yankee that I am).   Happy vows tomorrow!

Water 'em! (sm)
Hose them down outside, put them in the shower, or leave them out in the rain.

bluing and well water
I am on well water too. Have not used it most of my life but only the past 5 years so maybe that is part of my problem too! I don't know much about how it changes things. We do have a reverse osmosis system which is supposed to help remove rust and sulfur. Maybe I need the bluing too. More info on this would be appreciated! :) I also have allergies to most detergents so a brand name would be great!
thanks for the info. we have well water too. sm
we have a water softener, and filters.  not sure if maybe that is helping my stuff dinge out.  thanks for the info on the bluing!
Hot tap water - which is really very warm - sm
If it's too hot for your hands, it's too hot for the yeast.
I know I don't drink enough water...sm
I also have interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder inflammation) so I should definitely be drinking more water than I do. When I drink any carbonated drink, my bladder hurts the next day. I had a cystoscopy in September to diagnose this, and my bladder was all red and inflamed with little red pinpoint bleeding in it. When I do pee tests I have chronic white blood cells from the inflammation. So yes I would say I need to drink lots of water.
I go along with the filtered water--sm
It makes a HUGE difference in the way your coffee tastes. I turned my mother onto filtered water and she says she will never do it any other way. She even makes her icecubes with filtered water. Anyway, I am picky about my coffee as well and I buy Farmer Brothers. Around here, I can only buy it on line, as none of the stores carry it. I buy five one pound cans at a time, which is a little cheaper, with a flat rate shipping fee. It is supposed to be the kind of coffee that most restaurants use, which is why you can't get it in the stores. I do not like strong coffee. I cannot handle the caffeine and I do not like decaffeinated. Farmer Brothers has varying degrees of strength, as well as flavored coffees. I will also go along with a clean coffee maker, and don't forget to clean the pot, as well!
