I worked at a physical rehab center for 5 years. As another poster stated, the amount of improvement depends on a lot of things. However, I saw people leave or return for appts with no noticeable residual, others who still had deficits but were independent. Those who were permanently impaired learned to adapt. There are some really cool gadgets out there! One thing I learned from working at the rehab center was determination really *can* pay off. It was inspiring working there.
IF your dad needs extensive therapy, the hardest part for YOU may be keeping him motivated. So, best of luck to your dad, you and the family. Let us know how things are going.

My friend who is the companion to Sophia who I pictured in lower thread just made this video, she is an amateur, it brought tears to my eyes. She rescued Sophia from the woods behind her apartment building. She and others just got through rescuing another backyard chow too, she will be beautiful one day like Sophia too. Enjoy!

It has become a tradition in our neighborhood to "spook" our neighbors. Here is how it works.
First the poem
Good Evening My Friends!
The Gretting of the Ghosts are haunting your way
A cursewill be left if you fail to obey!
To ward off the curse of the dreaded Phanton Wart
You have just ONE day till you must start.
Take treats to two houses in your neighborhood.
Be sure they are tasty! Be sure they are good!
Copy a letter and a phantom for each.
Help the "spirit" spread to those you can reach.
Post the ghost of the phanton on your front door.
So others can see he has been there before.
Join the fun of the season
Keep him right in sight
Share the "spirit" of giving
Till Halloween Night!
Sincerely,
The Halloween Phantom.
Here is the rest....My dauther downloaded a picture of a ghost and printed it on an 8x10 piece of paper so we could go ahead and get started without having to make copies.
Then go to the dollar store and first get a big plastic candy bowl. In our bowl we received last night there was candy....always candy, a halloween candle, a cermic figurine of a bear dressed like a ghost, halloween clings for windows, halloween potholders, and our fav. Peeps ghosts, all which I am sure came from the dollar store. My son came home and found the bowl on front porch.
Here are some other things we have recieved in the past....candy....always candy, halloween dishtowels, stickers, bubbles, and gel pens when the kids were younger, a plant in a halloween container, chip clips, magnetic grocery lists, brownine mixes, even a halloween throw rug for the front door.
We once spooked a couple that did not have kids so we gave them some goodies as well as dog treats.
We also once spooked a family with a daughter the same age as mine so we thought we could get some really cute things. They were Jehovah's witnesses. Needless to say they did not put the pic. of the ghost on the front door.
This has been going on in this growing neighborhood for the past 5 years and everyone really seems to enjoy it.
This is also a geat idea for school teachers, dorm rooms, etc. Hope this inspires some.

3,000 miles away this Thanksgiving/Christmas season.....I hope someone gets a kick out of it. I'm so sad today.
Good afternoon Ms. Best-Thanksgiving-Cook in the whole world! How are you today?
You know, I got really sad this morning when I was looking at all of the groceries I bought for my thanksgiving dinner. I wasn't sure if I forgot anything or what exactly you're supposed to include in your traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I became sad because growing up at 16, 17, 18, 19+, etc., I don't remember watching you cook or even helping you in the kitchen! I was too busy being dumb! I do remember eating like a hog though. That makes me sad. Because I didn't watch you or HELP YOU (like I need help this week). Why didn't I help you???? I did other things in vain that didn't even matter and now look - I don't even know how to take the neck parts out of a turkey or even what to do with it, what pan to use, how to stuff it, or anything! When do I start defrosting it??
This is really my first real turkey! I was going to do it last year but I think I just bought a little hen. This year, we are going to have some military families come over (maybe I inherited that much from you), so I went ahead and got an 18 pounder and a large ham with the bone in it. I don't even know what to do with that. I spent 200.00 on all kinds of things and now I'm sitting here going, "Okay, what do I do with all this food and spices?"
I bought a couple of cans of pumpkin mix and Chris asked me, "What are you going to do with the pumpkin mix?" I was like, "I have no idea. I just thought I needed it. You do something with it!"
Where in the world is grandma Howard when you need her to come over and bring her world-famous Sweet Potato Pie!? And your famous stuffing which I haven't had in 10 years?!
-------------------
I sent this letter to my mom this week. I am a married mom of 3 now with regrets of not spending more time in the kitchen with my mom. Instead I remember getting ready and going out with friends and ditching her on Thanksgiving and returning home late at night and eating leftovers.
What I wish I knew then what I know now...and need to know now...
I found this site of recipes wanted to share
All these recipes look good, from the Rice Dream/Soy Dream product - I want to make the macaroni casserole, pumpkin corn chowder, rice dream cupcakes with chocolate frosting, soy dream garlic mashed potatoes, banana berry smoothie, French Dream toast. Heck I want to do all of their recipes. They all sound good so wanted to share the site:

A cute little article/story my husband just wrote that I wanted to share!
Layoffs in the North Pole
Story by Bill Perkins
In a press release this morning Santa Claus announced the layoff of nearly 800,000 elf employees. The announcement was completely unexpected despite the current economic situation.
Due to the failing economy, and many companies cutting costs wherever they can, including advertising, Mr. Claus has lost several endorsement jobs.
Mr. Claus is seeking government aid, requesting his own bailout package from several different governments. However, he is meeting a great deal of resistance. Many toymakers and distributors, namely Walmart, Playskool, and the Chinese government, are lobbying against the bailout. They say Santa's "Free Toy for Every Child" program is a seasonal monopoly, and it generally takes four months to recover the losses sustained from his "good deeds."
Children across the globe will feel the impact this Christmas, particularly the naughty ones. Traditionally, naughty children receive lumps of coal from Santa on Christmas. Mr. Claus has no coal to give, though, as it was part of the elves' severance packages. It is Santa's hope that it will at least be enough to keep his former employees warm through the winter.
When asked if there was any hope of the elves returning to work next year, Santa replied, "It doesn't look very promising. The elves are like family to me; I love them all very dearly. Unfortunately, illegal immigrants work for a lot less, and I don't have to provide benefits, so that's probably what I'll have to do. It was a difficult decision to make, but it's necessary if I want to keep the business in operation."
The elves aren't the only ones hurting. The reindeer are suffering a great deal more. Mr. Claus has had to auction off much of his breeding stock just to stay operational until Christmas Eve. (See related story on page 5, "McDonald's Debuts new Christmas Menu.) It is questionable at this point how much longer Santa will be able to make his annual flight.
Could this be the beginning of the end of Santa Claus? Only time will tell for sure.
Just got this in an email today, thought I would share. SM
The brownies sound delicious! I am going to try the hint about the scrambled eggs, too.
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls > of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up. > > For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints > in > double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful > minty frosting. > > > > Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic > > and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic. > > Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simple > chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. > Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over > the > apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice > cream. Yum >
I know there are a lot of animal lovers here, so I thought I would share...
Back in March I posted on this board about my lab puppy that died from parvo. After that happened, we bleached our house from ceiling to floor and poured buckets and buckets of dilute bleach on our yard. About a month later, I was approached by a neighbor who's boxer had had puppies and since the neither of the parent boxers were registered, she was selling them of $100 a piece. I've always wanted a boxer, but refused to pay $400 for a dog. So I jumped at the chance to get a boxer, but I was a little leery because of the parvo incident. So my hubbie and I again bleached our house from top to bottom and bleached our yard, pretty much killing the grass. We made sure the puppy had her first set of shots including a parvo vaccination and even made a point three months ahead for her second parvo booster. We brought her home and she did great. We thought we were successful at decontaminating our house. She was healthy and happy until about three weeks ago. She had gotten into the trash and got a hold of some raw chicken bones and then the next was lethargic and heaving like she wanted to throw up but couldn't. As luck would have it, it was time for her appointment for her shots and booster. So I get to the vet and tell her what was going on with her and even the vet agreed it was probably the chicken. So they checked her out and she had a temperature. So the vet said she couldn't give her shots, but they could do the flea treatment. Then vet asked me about doing a parvo test. At first I was like no way could she have parvo. She's been living in our house for four months now and is just now getting sick? But then I said just to rule out, let's do it. Well, she had parvo!
I was just sick and crying. I didn't want my kids to watch another dog die, but I didn't want to euthanize her either. She wasn't as sick as the other dog had been. She hadn't had diarrhea, just a little vomiting. I just didn't know what to do. I couldn't afford the $600 my vet was telling me would be the cost to hospitalize her and give her IV fluids and antibiotics. So I took her home and gave the sad news to my husband. Then I got mad and said there has got to be something else we can try. So the MT in me took over and I got online and started researching. I found a couple of articles where vets had tried Tamiflu in dogs with parvo and that the Tamiflu had actually helped. It had shortened the length of the illness, hindered the spread of the virus throughout the dog's intestinal tract, and made the symptoms less severe. Basically, given a dog a better chance for survival. Luckily (LOL) my entire family had had the flu back in February and I happened to have some Tamiflu on hand that my husband hadn't taken. I found that the vets had given the parvo dogs 1 mg per pound to the sick dogs twice a day for five days which in my dog averaged to about 30 mg twice a day. My Tamiflu was 75 mg capsules. So I figured I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. So I did it. She wouldn't eat at first, so putting the pill in a hotdog wasn't an option. So my husband held her mouth open and I dropped a pill in and used a baby medicine dropper to squirt water into her mouth. Then we held her mouth closed and made her swallow. Day two, she seemed a little perky and actually got up to drink water on her own. By day three, she was eating tiny pieces of poached chicken and taking her pill on her own.
Long story short, we are now two weeks out from Sugar's 5-day Tamiflu treatment and she is 100% recovered! She is chasing the cat, chewing up my shoes, and just generally wreaking the wonderful havoc like she has always done! I told my vet what I did and she's going to do some research on her own and she may even try it on other dogs in the future. I just wanted to share my story here because so many times people think parvo is a death sentence or that the only thing to save your dog is expensive treatment that people have a hard time justifying. I also wanted to share how my career as an MT probably saved my dog! Had I not had honed all those researching and investigative skills we need as MTs, I would have never found the information that ultimately saved my dog.
i thought you wanted to talk about soap!

Priceless.

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some advice. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a di fferent word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the righ t answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
If you agree, pass it on. If you can read this - Thank a teacher! If you are reading it in English -Thank a soldier!
This one is priceless!
I am reading these and LMAO. Actually have tears running down my cheeks. Sure needed these this morning. Although I am finding way too much common sense.
priceless! lol
Do your boys still remember that? I would not have been able to keep a straight face!

Don't wanna spoil for anybody that hasn't seen it yet, but oooh...so FUNNY... Steph and Donna.... I personally think Stephanie is hilarious....
Time will be priceless! sm
Great time of year to share yourself! Wrap up a new game, take some snacks and you and your husband spend time with them! At their age your time with them will be priceless!

NO Transcriptionist ever actually won! Guess I would have lost that one, too!
I'M STILL LAUGHING!!! THIS IS PRICELESS!!!

I use my credit card!!!! Priceless!
Actually it was an expired one. Hubby laughed. I use Dawn Power Disolver in the blue bottle. Works wonders. Then IF I have to scrape I have used the credit card of course, but fine metal spatula or a razor, but I use one of those like you scrape paint with that has the handle like an ice scraper.
My husband wanted me to pick out what I wanted....sm
I narrowed it down to 2 choices and let him make the final decision on which style/carat size to get.
The Holiday does it for me. or Holiday Inn for a priceless oldie.nm

I'm a Christian... by Maya Angelou
When I say... I am a Christian, I'm not shouting, I'm clean livin'. I'm whispering, I was lost, Now I'm found and forgiven.
When I say... I'm a Christian, I don't speak of this with pride. I'm confessing that I stumble, and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say...I'm a Christian, I'm not trying to be strong. I'm professing that I'm weak, and need His strength to carry on.
When I say... I'm a Christian, I'm not bragging of success. I'm admitting I have failed, and need God to clean up my mess.
When I say... I'm a Christian, I'm not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.
When I say... I'm a Christian, I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.
When I say... I'm a Christian, I'm not holier than thou. I'm just a simple sinner who recieved God's good grace somehow.

Okay, actual statement made by my doc tonight. Sometimes, the funniest are the most simple:
The patient could hardly stand up after I got through doing a rectal exam.
No wonder I love this job!!!!

Just have to share.
I bought a bottle of the electrolyte enhanced water yesterday. I cannot even tell you how much better I feel. I will buy a case tomorrow.
Want to share a pic.
My sister passed away in Nov. She loved the beach so we waited until this summer to spread her ashes there. My sister and I dug a heart in the sand and filled that empty void with her ashes and covered it with green colored popouri, her favorite color and put down candles and then the waves came up and washed the ashes back out to sea. In this picture, hope it shows, (if it does not someone tell me how to get it to show) my sister was taking picture and I leaned down to pick up a trash tie that had washed up there and the shadow looked like the hand was reaching out of the ashes to touch my hand. Freaked my little sister out. Was like a sign but it brought some humor to the situation.
