This is the reason I refuse to carry a debit card....sm

Most retailers do not require you to use a PIN and there is no security on these things. I've heard of many people like your daughter getting stuck without money for a few days while waiting for the bank to credit them back. Another problem that happens sometimes, including happening to my husband when we were dating was that when we ate out the waiter made an error on the charges to the debit card - charging $440.00 instead of $44.00. The waiter immediately ran the credit and the manager apologized, but the bank still took out the $440 until they received the written confirmation from the restaurant's bank of the error. Fortunately he had the money in his account to cover this error but other people would bounce checks over it. The same thing happened to my mom - an error was made and she was without as much as she should have had for the 3 business days it took to credit her back.
Your daughter should immediately talk to the police department about the fraud and the bank. Good luck straightening it out!

all of them that I can because my debit card
so I rack up the points paying my bills online with it!!
Used my debit card for everything - sm
but spent too much, about $800 in all. Got overcharged on my gift cards, bought 2 at $50, but got charged for 5.....just got my money back from the offending store on that one, which was quite a fight. They would not even listen to me, filed papers with the bank and sent the company a nasty detailed email to their complaint department, which believe it or not did the trick. My bank did not have to do anything in the end, just kept me informed on what the store was doing, took a week to get it resolved, but got my $164.85 back.
Is there a debit card available where a bank
?
I use a prepaid debit card. sm
My pay is deposited right on the card. I can also load the card, but it costs $3.50. Its called Real Money. There is a $5.95 month fee though. To take money out of an ATM costs $1.50 plus whatever the ATM charges. It also has a bill payer with a lot of merchants already programmed in so you can pay bills online. The only problem I have with it is that they'll put holds on funds and give the merchant 15 days to claim it before releasing it like if something gets charged twice for instance. One time I tried to buy a money order at the Wal-Mart money order machine and it never gave me my money order but had charged my card. It was for over $200 and they were going to hold it for 30 days! I had to have Wal-Mart fax a release to them. That was a pain. You have to be careful with some of this prepaid debit cards and read the fine print because some of them have a lot of hidden fees.
If it was a VISA check/debit card she will get -sm
her money back, don't know about other "brands" though. Someone stole my number from a BJs database and charged about $800 worth of stuff in another state quite far from us, of course the money came right out of our checking account. I went to the bank, filled out a zillion forms and had the all of the money back in 24 hours in a new checking account. That is total bull that she won't get the money back, the bank should guarantee it. One of you should definitely look into it and make some noise so she gets ever penny back.
huh? I have a debit card, not a visa, mastercharge....
and I cannot charge on it - I can only get $$ off it - and use it anywhere they accept debit cards (Walgreen's, etc) but not in dept. stores - only to DEBIT my card - never to charge. The bank always tries to solicit me with a Visa or Mastercharge debit card and I constantly cut them up and send them back to the bank - I don't want another VISA card (already have three, two of which I never use) and so I ONLY want a bank debit card...WAMU is the bank
Beware of overdraft protection on debit card though
My son moved into his own place, actually sharing a house with a friend. He got his first checking account and was actually doing well with it. He actually didn't get any checks and just used his debit card. He and his roommate decided to get cable. Evidently my son signed up for it to be automatically deducted from his checking account, which he says he did not know. That was his responsibility and his mistake obviously. He should have known when they were going to ping his account. Unfortunately, he did not. They deducted for his cable bill, and then he thought he had more in his checking account and used his check card about 12 times in a 2 day time period.. like, for 1 soda for $1.49, or $5.00 of gas. All of these charges were allowed and were put through but then were charged a $30 fee for each. Finally on the third day, the card was declined and that same day he received the notice of overdrafts in the mail. Supposedly this is a service the bank offers, which I don't understand, in that they will process your debit like an overdraft and put it through, but then charge you. I totally understand how that is a good thing for checks, as you avoid getting the check charges and bounced checks through the merchants, but when you are using a debit card, shouldn't it just decline it if you don't have enough money in there? It would have tipped him off right away that there was a problem with his account, instead of racking up over $300 in overdraft fees. We've contacted the bank several times, but they will not budge saying that this is "service" they provide and it was explained in the paperwork he received when he opened his account.

Credit Card Reform Can Cost Good Card Users
Part of article:
Credit cards have long been a very good deal for people who pay their bills on time and in full. Even as card companies imposed punitive fees and penalties on those late with their payments, the best customers racked up cash-back rewards, frequent-flier miles and other perks in recent years.
Now Congress is moving to limit the penalties on riskier borrowers, who have become a prime source of billions of dollars in fee revenue for the industry. And to make up for lost income, the card companies are going after those people with sterling credit.
We pay off our balance every month. If they do this (punish those who have sterling credit) Ridiculous!! I'll stop using my CC and pay by cash or check.
So much for reform.
IMO a card would not be out of order at all. Except a sympathy card, of course.
I totally agree a sympathy card wouldn't quite be the thing, but it sounded to me that the original poster of that idea didn't mean a sympathy card like one for death. I think sympathy in the sense of "hey, you had a rough time of it with this birth, and maybe things haven't been the way you imagined, but know that I'm thinking of you and I'm here if and when you need me."
I got PPD when my breastfeeding relationship didn't go right, following a birth plan that went seriously awry, and the reality of a fussy, picky baby instead of the happy, sleeping one that I had imagined.
I *did* spend a lot of time on the phone, but then everybody's different. I would have loved to get a cheerful card from a friend, however. Does anybody NOT like a card?
that's right, they have the right to refuse
this is NOT race related, it is strictly O.J. Simpson-related......nothing to do with his race, rather his history and makes perfect sense to me, another business owner.
You can refuse the PA/NP
I had a doctor who did that for a while and finally refused to see them.
i refuse...
to yell. granted you have 2 and i only have but we have a policy in our home not to yell, among other things. my 10 year old has come to appreciate (but used to HATE) "discussions." I used this term because it was a large word for him and could stick out as being meaningful (good or bad, i don't care). when he cries or gets mad (which on occasion still acts that way) at me for something he is simply and rationally sent to his bedroom for some quiet time and told when he has calmed down to find me so we can "discuss." Sometimes its 5 minutes, sometimes its 30, its all up to him. When he has had the opportunity to calm down we start the conversation by how he felt, how he thinks he made me feel, how I did feel, and finally why i asked him to do what i did and what "family" means...certainly not that i am "mom" so i do all the "work." i am not saying this was a quick thing and i have done this for several years now but he caught on very quickly that yelling and crying is just not something that will be done in this house.
like you, i am the primary caregiver and patience run thin at times so i understand your frustration, just not 2-fold. that has got to be tough. thought maybe this suggestion might help...but who knows. just have to find what works for your family.
I refuse to get old
but somehow I think that, eventually, I will lose the battle.
As for worrying about our care, we have already budgeted for long-term care insurance so we will be able to have whatever help we may require. 40-ish years from now.
I refuse to go to KFC - see msg

They can refuse service to anyone at will.
Even Wal-Mart can throw you out for any reason they want.
I'm glad he did it. I went to Jeff Ruby's Louisville website and sent him a support e-mail!
Thank goodness business owners can still decide WHO they want to serve and do business with!!!!
Don't use your debit cards
I had a problem with fraud on my account through them. Surely they have fixed it by now, as this was last year and the year before (yes 2 separate occurrences, both at xmas time). So I would not suggest using any cards there but cash only.
I do agree that it seems to be a great idea for teens. Their prices are great and our location has always been helpful with advise, returns, etc.
Another good idea I have found for teenagers is a gift card for restaurants or gas stations. It helps their parents a bit and if they have a girlfriend/boyfriend places like AppleBees or Red Lobster are nice so that they can go on a nice date and not have to worry about $30 for the bill. Even with a part-time job that's a lot of money for a teenager! :) My nephew actually requests it.
Most debit cards can also be used as a charge
card. If you use it as a charge card you do not have to put in a PIN number. What happened to your daughter sounds like someone from Bobs took the actual account number information. I'd confront Bobs mgmt.
Overdraft and Debit Cards
Thank goodness at the bank we use, debit card deductions are the same as checks (I rarely use checks). The overdraft applies to those as well. Luckily I don't use the overdraft often, just glad to know it's there is I need it.
It's not difficult either to refuse to consume
garbage posing as information.
Your choice.
I too refuse to go hungry or eat what I don't wnat...
Started exercising around Sept. Didn't see any measurable weight loss for about a month. I am so grossly overweight, though, that I can't exercise long. Used to be skinny. Wore a size 1 to 3 until developed thyroid condition, then packed on 50 lbs in just over a month that I never lost, but gradually added to over the years.
It does work, but it's much slower that if you diet, too. My measurable loss was 1/2 lb. I'm down about 1, but I feel much better, which is what counts.
Her insurance didn't refuse to pay
I'm not assuming anything. I asked very pointed questions, to which she either snapped at me or evaded answering. I said this before, but I think it bears repeating - an $800 hospital bill doesn't amount to much more than some antiseptic wash, a band-aid and some Tylenol. The bite wasn't that severe, probably no more than a superficial skin tear. I'm betting that's why the dog wasn't impounded. I think the OP is trying to make a mountain of a mole hill to make a few bucks. That's why she wanted the poster just to pay her the $800, not so she could turn it over to her insurance (which she should legally, or else it is fraud), but so that she could pocket that money. Now, here's where I assume something: I also think she knows she probably wouldn't get much in court, if anything, because the bite wasn't that severe.
It's easier to take the $800 bucks, than to try to fight it out in court and possibly end up with nothing. If her daughter was so traumatized by it all, why hasn't she seeked counseling for her yet? She was more concerned about setting up a college fund with the money she would win in court. The counseling was only an afterthought.
If she wants to sue, by all means sue - after all, it is the American way. But don't lie about the reason for it. It all comes down to money. Read my other posts and her replies. I just happen to believe in calling something what it is, not sugarcoating it or beating around the bush. This poster knows what she's trying to do, she just wanted some reassurance from others that it was okay. Sorry, can't do that here.
i REFUSE to let mine eat in the cafeteria
I don't pack fruits and veggies per se, but I do give them sandwiches and low calorie snacks. I gained weight during my tween years and I suspect it had something to do with school lunches as my grandmother worked in the cafeteria and frequently brought home left overs. She used to bring home TUBS of pb and J mixtures and we would literally eat it out of the tub with a spoon. I believe my kids eathing whole wheat sandwiches and chips are more nutritious than the slop they serve!!
I read it, but I simply refuse to believe it
One in seven people believe it is acceptable in some circumstances for a man to hit his wife or girlfriend if she is dressed in “sexy or revealing clothes in public”, according to the findings of a survey released today.
A similar number believed that it was all right for a man to slap his wife or girlfriend if she is “nagging or constantly moaning at him”.
The findings of the poll, conducted for the Home Office, also disclosed about a quarter of people believe that wearing sexy or revealing clothing should lead to a woman being held partly responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted.
Although a majority of 1,065 people over 18 questioned last month believe that it is never acceptable to hit or slap a woman, the poll found that those aged 25-39 were more likely to consider that there were circumstances in which it was acceptable to hit or slap a woman.
Men and women over 65 and those in the lower social class groups D and E are more likely to believe that woman should be held partly responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted, Ipsos Mori telephone poll found.
Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, said: “Violence against women and girls is unacceptable in any form no matter what the circumstances are.”
Ms Smith said that more needed to be done to challenge attitudes that condoned violence against women and girls.
She was speaking as she launched a police lead review of whether new laws are needed to tackle serial domestic violence abuses and whether there is a link between the early sexualisation of young girls and violent abuse.
One idea being considered is to allow women to ask police if a new partner has a record of domestic violence. A pilot scheme that allows women to request information on whether a new partner has a history of child sex abuse is currently underway in four police force areas of England and Wales.
But MS Smith was confronted at a working breakfast at which she launched the campaign by a veteran domestic violence campaigner.
Sandra Horley, chief executive of Refuge, accused Ms Smith over breakfast at the Cinnamon Club in Westminster of using “gimmicks” and “spin”.
She said that government action so far had been “piecemeal” and condemned plans for a database of serial domestic abusers.
Ms Horley said: “We have had enough talking – we need action. As for the perpetrators’ register, it is a gimmick and doesn’t address the root problem.
“The majority of violent men don’t come to the attention of police and it won’t keep women safe.
“Police can’t be expected to monitor relationships and love lives of offenders.”
She went on: ”The Government is hoping to get away with useless initiatives like this register and it is hypocritical to sound tough and do little.”
She said that the cases of Sabina Akhtar and Katie Summers showed that not enough was being done.
Ms Smith tried to interrupt the tirade but was shouted down before Vera Baird, the solicitor general, stepped in to argue the Government’s case.
Our kids got their own credit/debit cards when they hit 18 and got jobs. Their success or lack of

Conceal/Carry
Judging by all the negative posts to your post I would say that these people don't understand the process. In order to carry, at least in most places, you need a permit. You are investigated and have minimal training and testing before you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon. People with a past history of mental disorder or felonies are not supposed to be licensed for this. Crazies and felons already have guns and do use them. Just read the paper and you will see what I mean. The only people who were defenseless up until now in Utah in colleges were the people who were not crazy or felons and were not willing to break the rules and carry anyway. Does that sound fair to these people? Crazies and felons walking around armed (they don't really care if they are caught) and the rest of us waiting for something bad to happen?
I have guns and have had since I was 18 years old. I have, in the past, had PMS, but am not crazy, have never been arrested. All the years I had PMS I never once shot anyone in my "PMS state" and a couple of times I had a few too many glasses of wine - I shot no one at those times either. I get angry too from time to time and so far no one has been shot, so those arguments are ridiculous. The way I see it, the constitution provides a way for us to protect ourselves if we wish to and need to. I wish to. If you don't, that is okay too. People who are uncomfortable around firearms should not have one. Those who do feel comfortable should have the right if they are mentally stable, not a felon and have training and a license. Once my gun ownership probably saved me from something really ugly when a man tried to break down my front door at 2:00 a.m. I was on the phone with the police who were trying to get to my house, but there was a robbery in progress and I lived in a small town at the time, so I was "next" in line. At the point where I could no longer hear the police dispatcher (the guy was screaming, kicking the door and pounding on it, I made my choice. It was evident that I was the only one there who could protect me. I set the phone down and told him to move away from my door or I would shoot him through it. When he heard me put one into the chamber of the weapon (shotguns are really loud) he got scared and took off. Evidently, he had heard that sound before. I did not have to shoot him at all. When the police finally arrived 20 minutes later they found that he had been outside my home for quite some time before he decided to try to get in as evidenced by liquor bottles and cigarette butts on the ground where he had been hiding. After the fact, he was found to be extremely dangerous. I am thankful I had a shotgun and handguns that night. I am still thankful that I have them. I have killed no one, have scared one person who meant me harm. I don't think you necessarily have to be a law enforcement officer in order to make good decisions in a crisis situation. Others can do that too and have that right as long as they go about it in a lawful way. I am happy that Utah has the foresight to allow their students and teachers the right to protect themselves. I hope other states follow their example.
Why do they carry slacks in different
lengths only to carry short and average in the stores? Nothing is more irritating than to go through the entire pile to find there are no slacks in tall. I asked in the stores and their comment was they don't get many requests for tall. Oh please.
Also pack anything you buy in your carry-on - sm
one of my group made the mistake of packing her stuff in her luggage, every single thing was stolen that she bought there. I took mine in my carry-on bag, as did everyone else but her. Just be smart and aware.
Mine don't carry them but can find at
a Michael's or Joanns crafts. You can use a wax milk carton for your mold. Make sure wick is correct size for your mold - i.e., different wicks for different circumferances.
men carry lots of these things
Women get Trichamonas, men don't *get* it - they are just carriers of it and hence both would have to get treated. Men can be and are carriers.........
try googling HPV and you can find out TONS of info on the subject
You need to make threats and carry through
I am exactly the same way, get shocked if someone suddenly enters my room. Cannot sit with my back to the door. I told my husband he could not enter anymore without knocking because of how much it scared me and if he wanted to continue, I would take my cup of coffee and throw at him, it really scared me that much. He taps on the door outside before entering, so much nicer.
Blow them off, change your *name*, and carry on!

Carry the hardwood into the kitchen!

Mice carry vermin, get rid of the stove sm
I don't know where you live, but call Goodwill or some derivative of that type, Craig's list as mentioned or a free newspaper which advertises cheap and don't risk getting sick. Make sure you disinfect all that area and plug it all up and reseal probably with a piece of plywood or something before you replace the stove. Perhaps you can arrange for your town to pick the old stove up. I wouldn't use it. Sorry for your troubles at Christmas, it must be hard. Perhaps you can get some frozen meals to microwave or canned food from the local church food bank. I was told by a friend who works at a food bank that the government provides them with a check for a certain amount and they have to spend that whole amount on food, not a penny less, and they sometimes have too much food. Also, see if there is a church near you who provides meals. Some around here provide lunch and dinner and don't ask questions. Research, research, don't be proud, everyone is hurting. Good luck to you! Hope you do okay, everyone gets mice, no one is immune, just disinfect, make sure they don't get back in and replace the stove.

Bring a light, easy-to carry stool.
You will be surprised how long the walk is, and often the grass is damp, but you'll want to sit on it. I walk my dogs up to 3 miles, but it still seemed like a long walk on a warm day.
You'll want a wide-brimmed straw hat for the sun, too. Sunglasses of course and great, cushiony shoes you could stand in for hours. Most kids would not enjoy tagging along.
I enjoy watching golf on TV very much. It's the only sport DH and I both watch.

podcasts are like radio shows that you can carry with you and listen to at any time.
You can find them easily on iTunes. There's a link to their podcasts somewhere on the left side of the page. You can search podcasts for subjects that interest you. There are also video podcasts, if you have a video iPod. One of my favorites is The Rest of Everest. It's a weekly video show about climbing Mt. Everest.
You can also listen to podcasts right on your computer, so you don't need to download to your iPod, but it's nice to do that. There are podcasts about every topic you can imagine! Search "crafts", and you'll find something. There are lots of travel podcasts, sports, business, you name it. Some are very highly produced, others are kind of basic. Some are put out by professional broadcasting companies, too. PBS puts out tons, and I like to listen to Garrison Keillor's "News From Lake Wobegon" every week, too.
That's probably more than you needed to know!

Okay, Utah passed a law permitting college students to now carry guns. sm
I am very for this and think it's a great idea. Now let's see how many colleges in Utah have shoot outs like those in the other states. I bet shooters will think twice about going in and blowing a place up knowing that there are probably many people carrying concealed weapons. I would feel much safer in a Utah college than anywhere else.

I always go with cash, but if you don't like that maybe a gift card to the local gas station. Ours has this in any denomination you choose.
Credit card (SM)
There was information about credit cards and interest rates going around late last year/early this year. Basically, from what I understand with the new bankruptcy law this was attached to it. The credit card companies can and will charge you and me whatever interest rate they want to, and the only thing we can do is cancel the card and pay off the balance. There were these little inserts with your statements that many of us just throw away and never think about it. But I did read the ones that were sent with several of my statements, and I kindly told them to keep my rate where it was and I canceled the card. Sad but true.
Gift Card
Just a note. I learned from my daughter and my neices that the VISA gift cards are the prefered gift card. They can be used anywhere salons, stores, and even gas stations which for a 16-yo can be a lifesaver.
About my credit card
I owed close to $10,000.00 about 2 months ago on my credit card and called to make sure I sent the right amount as paying it off. After I paid in full, they also sent a "finance charge" for around 35 to 40 dollars. I paid that but have discontinued using that card. I have another card, used during Christmas, interest about half of the other one and getting that paid off before long also, just sent $500.00 towards that yesterday. I on the first had asked for payoff amount but the finance not there when I asked.
