This is a sad...

story, but you are great for taking the puppy even knowing it was sick and would have vet bills ahead of you. You have a big heart. I truly hope it resolves soon.

I had a cat who was a stray I took in. He could hardly breathe and would have asthma attacks (which I did not know what he was doing until the vet told me that is what it was)..which I thought he was trying to throw up hairballs...By the time I took him in for treatment after about a week of worsening cough...they diagnosed him with asthma -- x-ray showing almost NO air exchange.. It was devastating to see that. They put him on prednisone in a high burst and taper and then I would just treat him with prednisone as needed for flares. They wanted me to try using a nebulizer of some sort...I didn't because it was hard enough to get the poor guy to swallow the pills. I couldn't imagine how to get him to inhale medication. I am sure it is doable, but luckily prednisone did the trick. He has since passed.

Good luck to you and your lil pup!
