Thinning of hair

Posted By: MQMT1 on 2008-06-14
In Reply to: Well now that's a lot more than - Me

I have had my thyroid checked and it is perfectly okay, and as for the drying problem, we live in Florida where our water is very, very harsh and if you don't have a water softener attached to your system your hair dries out quickly, which is why I use conditioner. My hairdresser said that was why my hair was thinning out too. I keep my hair now semi-long and love it that way. Since I have taken better care of my hair and use better products my hair does not appear thin or dry.

thinning hair
I do not have a thyroid condition but my hair was always very thin and falls out in handfuls except when I was pregnant.  My sister is a doctor and she found an article that advocated taking biotin (2000 mcg) and MSM (1000 mg) a day - ask your doctor, but biotin is just a B vitamin and MSM is used for joint health - and after a month or so I noticed a huge improvement in hair loss.  We both have noticed it.  I have also seen biotin used for stronger nails and I have to admit mine are growing quite well.
I've had thinning hair every since menopause...

It's not like it comes out in gobs but just is thinning out really bad, basically can't do a ponytail anymore.  My NP just said, yeah that's just the breaks with menopause and didn't want to do any testing.  I finally went to a dermatologist, who ran thyroid tests and also iron tests, because he said in his experience hair loss was often associated with low ferritin.  I know that I don't get much iron in my diet and took vitamins without iron since menopause, so switched to a vitamin with iron, seems to be a little better but maybe just my imagination... my ferritin was on the very low edge of normal, almost into low range.  My thyroid tests came back okay.

Also about docs prescribing certain meds,I do know some veternarians who got bonuses, prizes, etc. for presribing so much of certain drugs... like quite NICE prizes.  Wonder if this happens with doctors and prescribing certain drugs when they insist on a certain one...don't know but sometimes makes one wonder.

Anyone ever exerpience hair thinning/breakage with taking Benadryl daily
I have been taking one store brand Benadryl-type tablet every night before bed to help me with my allergies and to help me sleep for the past few of months. Ever since I started taking it, I have noticed that my hair is thinning and breaking very easily and is just very weak. I usually have very, very thick and full hair, but not anymore since taking it. In fact, my hair is usually so thick and heavy that I always had to go and get it thinned once a month because it made my head so hot! I stopped taking the antihistamine last night because I finally realized that may be what is causing my problem. Anyone else heard of this or had it happen?
I was referring to my own hair, people hair. nm

Oh yeah! I have a long-haired cat. My living room looks like she had a fight with Santa and Santa lost his white trim and long beard. LOL
Hair
Oh I know you meant people hair.  Just wanted to share that my cat is goning through the same thing these days.  I guess because she is just so close to my heart she feels like a child not a pet.
About your hair

What do you like/dislike the most about it?

I've been letting mine grow, so it's longer and looks really nice around my face. It's very soft. That part I like.

I hate hate hate having long hair when it's hot outside. Ponytail and hair clips, here I come.

hair
Yes, you can do this yourself. Go for it. IF you want an overall lighter color go for it. Make sure you read the box about if your hair is dark it will look like this or if your hair is this dark we do not recommend. I would also even recommend going to a Sallys Beauty Supply. They can help you as well. I used to do hair for a living before MTing.
Hair

Hey go for it.  Anything that looks good, do it.  I always wear my hair short because it looks the best.  Looking back at pictures I have almost the same haircut that I had at age 21 but am not trying to recreate that age it just looks the best on my.  My great nephews, ages 20 to 8, always tell me that there is no way I am almost the same age as their grandmother (my sister 3 years older) because she is old and I am not and I think it is because I act, dress and think young.  I don't wear mini's but my legs are one of my best assets and so I wear knee length skirts and heels many times and it makes me feel good.   Even if you wanted to wear a beehive -- now I am showing my age -- do it if it makes you feel good. I envy those gals with longer hair but I am small boned and small facial features and it just overwhelms me.  But a lot of older actresses have long hair and it looks good.

keep your hair.

Dry hair
I have really dry hair both because of my middle age and putting dye on it at home.  I've tried most otc products but nothing really seems to get it soft and healthy looking.  Anyone have any tried and true products, like a deep treatment type of conditioner that really works?
Oh, well, it's just hair, you know? sm
I agree with her...you gotta pick your battles. That said, my son's hair is longish, but not to his shoulders.
Hair......
It is definitely not good to wash hair every day.
Because you strip the hair of the essential oil and then the follicles produce again oil, the hair gets oily very fast and you have to wash it again.
This becomes a vicious cycle.
The more often you wash your hair, the faster it gets oily.
Try to use 'dry shampoo' in between, until your hair gets less oily.
Get a dog with hair, not fur- sm
Find out what breeds have hair, I know poodles are one, I think there are one or two others but not sure. He would not be allergic to a dog with hair though, if so then he is allergic to people too. There are standard size poodles (large) or miniature poodles.
I have used it in my hair, but not to eat.

my sister does hair
and one of her clients bought her a jogging suit that says "i run with scissors!" she thought that was too fun! of course, depends on the personality.
Coloring your hair.

How many here have colored or still color their hair?
Highlights, lowlights, gray coverage or all out Platinum blonde.
Maybe you are going for that fire engine red.....

I bought one of those kits the other day that has the base color and the extra highlighting kit too. I am going for the medium to dark brown (which is my natural color) with "Caramel Glaze" highlights. My hair naturally has alot of underlying red tones so I have to be careful what color I choose or I end up looking like Lucille Ball. (not that red is a bad thing) I just don't want to be the next "Carrot Top" LOL.

Anybody else out there about to do a color change? opinions?

hair color sm
Had beautiful brown hair with natural red highlights, talked into blond highlighting, now go every 3 mos for cut and color but prices are being ridiculously increased to over $110 for this service, $45 for the cut and $65 for partial - more for full highlight. I am scared to do this alone, as I don't want to look like a "skunk" and the highlighting makes me feel better, as I'm getting older. Another subject - as you get older, people treat you like you're taking up space on the planet - rude. I don't intend to go gray. Is keeping the brown and putting in my onw highlights a fairy tale, is it that difficult? Can't imagine how I'll see in the mirror to do it alone!!! Can't afford it anymore. I think the stylist is planning to raise her prices and it will be over $150 for the whole head!
hair color
I found some really cool hair color at www.bettybeauty.com
Anyone ever had a hair transplant
due to loss of hair and if so, can you tell me how it came out, were you satisfied with the results, how much cost and which place did you use? I have seen some ads and am thinking seriously about this. Thanks.
hair style
My hairstyle is very low maintenance, a layered cut barely past my shoulders, which I shape with a hairbrush and blowdryer.  It takes less than 5 minutes, but I have a lot of natural curl.  What is your hair type?  That makes a big difference.
P.S. To Hair message . . .
Sorry, didn't know talking about animals would be so upsetting to you.
I picked thru their hair...
Took small section by section and picked thru and took each nit and pulled them out several times a day until I found no more nits. I had to go thru mine too since I got it too.
Arm hair trouble

It seems like over the last several years the hair on my forearms has gotten darker and darker. I'm so self-conscious about it, I feel like it makes me nice and mannish looking :(

Here's my question: would it help to put hydrogen peroxide on my arm hair everyday? Bleaching is such a hassle for a large area like that, and I don't have the money now for laser removal. I think hydrogen peroxide lightens hair, but would it make a noticeable difference on my arms?

I am always losing my hair.
All year round. A lot comes out in the shower and when drying my hair. My bathroom floor is covered. I have very thick hair. I never thought to ask my doctor about it. May be I should. I do not see any bald spots yet, but I will continue to watch. I just turned 50. I hope it does not get worse.
hair loss
My hair started falling out years ago, just inherited. I tried extensions, forget that.. There are a couple of products out there hair so real, but then I got Toppix; it's a natural hair fiber/powder that you apply to DRY scalp where the scalp is showing through; it's expensive, so I only use it when I go out to meet people I know.
Do you part your hair?? (sm)
I don't part mine or my kids - I brush it and it has sort of a natural part, but I never do the old comb-parting thing. Just wondering if I am the odd one out? Hey - it says GAB board :-)
My hair is very short right now.
Short layers and all I have to do is spray a little hairspray on it and run my fingers through it and I'm good to go.  It has gotten much thicker over the years and hair color has helped with that too.  I hate that I have to color my hair, though.  I started going gray almost 20 years ago and I just turned 40.    At some point, I will bite the bullet and let the color grow out, but haven't gotten there yet.  Not ready to be totally gray.
My hair is short
When it starts to get even a little long, I have to go out and get it cut. I don't like the way my hair or the way I look when it gets too long. I just put some gel in it and go. The only thing I don't like is that it can get dry in the sun. I've been dying my hair for about five years or so (46 now). I won't let it go gray, but that's just me. My daughter is only 4 so I feel I would look like her grandmother if I let it go gray.
LOL. I have that kind of hair too!!
Mine is longer layers and I have a LOT of it and it gets coarse sometimes after highlighting. So you should see me when I wake up in the morning sometimes. It is sticking up and out a good few inches on the top and sides! I joke with my husband, don't come too close or I may poke your eye out! LOL So I know exactly what you mean about not being able to just run out for something some days. Or God forbid, what about unexpected company or UPS or FedEx? LOL
Anyone else out there with curly hair?
My daughter is 3.  She has waist-long curly hair.  It is so beautiful but I am beginning to despise it!!!  It is so tangly.  I use Johnsons & Johnsons detangler from Wal-Mart, but that just doesn't seem to help.  I wash her hair with a shampoo/condition in 1 and then I do another round of just conditioner.  I can't figure out how to make this better.  The hair combing experience every day is painful for both of us!!  If you have any suggestions, short of cutting off those beautiful locks, I would sure appreciate your advice!
Curly hair
I have curly hair and so does my son so I know what you mean about it being a painful experience for both of you. I've found that sometimes it helps if you leave the conditioner in for a while before rinsing and always use a wide-tooth comb. Some leave-in conditioners help. When my hair was really long I always braided it before bed so it was easier to deal with the next morning.
Wind in HIs Hair

Since we are talking hair, I always wonder
wondered what kind of hair Mane and Tail is good for.  Is it for smoothing hair that is coarse, or just what does it do?
Have dry, brittle hair

Only wash about once a week and dry, brittle, fly-away, breaking. Anyone use anything that really helps this situation? Thanks!

hair cost sm
I was told years ago that the markup is ridiculous by someone who took a beautician course.. I found a good girl, shopped around, could not believe what WALMART (just stopped by to qestion in person) is charging for simple highlights and cut, even the local Regis Salons which also includes Supercuts, etc., are getting a hundred bucks or more. So what I did was establish an agreement with a girl who rents space nearby and she is excellent. She has been charging me $65 for color, cut and blow dry and style. So today I gave her a very generous Christmas tip and she tried to give it back to me. I told her I so appreciated what she does for me all year and she started to cry and gave me a hug. I told her I was aware of what others charged and I knew she gave me a break all year. Everyone won, nobody lost. Shop around, the markup is ridiculous. Corporate wins, not the stylist (much like our profession). Just find someone you can trust and develop a relationship with and give them a little extra once in awhile. I am very glad I did this,I had a great day and I feel wonderful and so does my stylist. It can be done, be an educated consumer. Don't fall for the high prices, what costs them a few bucks turns into literally hundreds when it comes to highlight or color and cut! Shop around.
You didn't know before the hair job how much it was

cost of hair
In defense of the cosmetology profession, I have to add that one never knows how much money and time the big stylists put into their business. My oldest son spends $10,000.00 a month in overhead, salaries, rent, seminars, etc. He stays current on everything, is a certified colorist, etc. They earn every penny they get - I had no idea until he filled me in. By the way, he lives too far away to make it worth my while to go get a haircut every 5 weeks, so I still go to local girl. $12.00 - she is way too cheap. Please don't bash them if you do not know the inside of the business. Anyway, Merry Christmas! Everyone tip your stylist - if it is a man, bake him something - he'll love you forever!!
hair dressing
Check your closest beauty supply store. I think you may be looking for what is called a "hair dressing." They smell good, come in light to heavy. I use one on my "babies" who have extremely curly hair. They are biracial, but do not have the coarse black African hair. Their hair is just extremely curly and the hair dressing adds shine and moisture, not oil, to their hair.
Hair Dryer
I have never tried this myself, but I have read that if you use a hair dryer on a low setting, about 6 to 8 inches from the ear, for about 10 to 15 minutes, it may make the earache better.

Hope this helps and your little one is feeling better soon!
Long hair....
I am 35 years old and have very long curly hair.  My mother-in-law thinks I am going to have to cut it soon.  (This is coming from the lady who goes to the hairdresser and asks for the Moe!)  She says people over 40 look silly with long hair.  I think she is nuts.  I will keep my hair no matter what my age.  Do what you want and don't let a few old hags make you feel bad!
Hair length
First let me say that I am appalled that some "neighbors" would have the audacity to tell you how to wear your hair.

Second, I just watched a segment on Today (Meredith leaves at 9:00 so I didn't get a chance to look at her hair) but they did a makeover on a woman that I would say is "retirement age" and the length was just above her shoulders and she looked fabulous.

Now adays we are always hearing "love your body", well that includes your hair. If your are happy and you are fortunate enough to have a hubby that cares enough to try to make you feel better, than more power to you.
It seems that is how they like to wear their hair...
I don't think there is anything specific behind it.  Maybe they believe it conservative?
In my 20s, I like my hair a lot longer

Yanking your hair out
You should try having MY neighbors!!!! Not only do their 2 dogs bark, but the people are NASTY and don't clean up their dog crap!! They feed the dogs on paper plates, and leave them all over the yard! They are such trash! Unfortunately we are stuck here for 4 years until my son graduates and then we are out of this hellhole! I really don't understand 1. Why nasty people ALWAYS seem to have so many animals. 2. Why do they have them, just to keep them outside? What's the point?! Oh, I'll tell you why...these idiots THINK that someone always wants to steal their trash!!!! I feel like telling them, "No one wants your junk lady, you people are gross." lol! Did I mention that they have 2 (maybe more?!) cats that are, once again, outside, and 1 of them craps in our front yard every stinking nite!!!!??? They don't care. If I were you, I would definitely call Animal Control.  They weren't a help in my situation, but they may be better where you live! Good luck and keep us posted! Thanks for letting ME vent! Now you got me going...lol to myself
To Yanking your hair out

I am glad you liked my post! I was actually laughing as I read it to myself and then again when I read your reply!! Those little icons make it even funnier, don't they?! I have to laugh sometimes, or I will cry. I just wish people would clean up their sh!t!! Is that too much to freakin' ask?! They are such hicks, they need to go live out on an empty lot somewhere, where they can collect all their trash out in bum&#ck Egypt where no one cares! They have it all... the old-a$$ trailer (I call the Barnacle Barge!) a couple cats, 2 dogs, birds, a 30-year-old son that doesn't work that lives with them?! Should I go on?!

Okay, I am having way too much fun with these icons! And I am on a roll, but I will stop for now.

Have a good one!

Have your spouse cut your hair
Guys, if you keep your hair short, buy hair clippers with a set of clips and hand over the clippers to your spouse. You may have a couple of cuts that result in a buzzed head, but unless she’s got horribly unsteady nerves, she’ll figure it out.
hair spray?... sm
My beautician recommends putting the hair up in ponytail, etc. and using lots of hair spray to keep the lice off.  Don't think it's a "cure" but helped my daughter stop getting them.  Have you replaced bed pillows?  You have my deepest sympathies.  I remember going through this over and over again years ago.  Best of luck.
If I don't shampoo my hair every day...sm
It is so oily the next day it looks like I haven't washed it in a week. I have to wash it everyday. It would be nasty if I didn't. I wish I didn't but I do.
I think whether or not you wash your hair

everyday has a lot to do with the type of hair you have and the type of products you use on it.  I have what I consider "normal" hair.  No perms, just colored, almost shoulder length.  When I went through the "big hair" phase, I had to wash my hair everyday just to get the products out.  Now that my hair looks more "natural", I can usually skip a day.

I only skip a day, though, when I'm not going anywhere other than the grocery store.  Whether my hair looks good or not, I don't feel good about myself unless my hair is washed and styled and makeup on.  But that's just me.

No more pedicures! No more hair
color.  I've decided to age gracefully.  I was getting my hair colored about every 4- 5 weeks for the past 2 years, but stopped that in the Fall.  Also, stopped the pedicures every 2 weeks.  With the uncertainty of the economy, I just don't feel right plopping out all that money each month (some of which goes on my credit card .  Was also going to the most expensive place in town to get my hair cut (because I love what the stylist has done for my friend's hair, not because I love to throw away money), but stopped that a few months ago in favor of Supercuts.  There's something to be said for being able to walk out of there for $20 or less (tip included).  They do great work too.  A couple of months ago I actually had two messages on my answer machine from the expensive salon asking if I would like to schedule any services.  They must be hurting.  The economy will get better and then I plan to dabble my toes in the bubbling water again ( hope my pedicurist is still there), but I do plan to embrace my age and go gloriously gray and also stick with Supercuts.  I do think I'm going to be having a Clinique crisis though when I run out of my eye cream in the next few weeks.  Hopefully, there will be overtime!
