Shoes! Love shoes. Thin soles work best.
Don't be mad, but foot size might have something to do with it. I'm a 7 1/2 shoe size, and I suspect a foot much bigger than that might be a bit wide to easily hit the right pedal every time. Remove the shoe and your foot is narrower and you can feel the controls and not hit the wrong one. Just a guess because I've heard guys have the worst time with the pedal.
light slippers. can't *feel* the pedal with shoes. nm

I was in your shoes at one time too -
I lost a job after 13 years and of course a person cannot always afford COBRA. So of course I had no health insurance for 3 years. That being said, I also was on 2 different antidepressants that cost almost $300 a month. My doc, bless his heart, put me in touch with a program for "Indigents and Transients". Don't let the title put you off...what it is is a program by some drug companies that will provide you your medications free of charge. No cost to you at all. All you do is fill out any necessary paperwork. It is income based, so your husband being laid off will be a help.
Your son may have to fend for himself for the duration. You raised him the best you could, taught him what he needed to now, and now he has made his choice. Tough as it may be for you, you need to get yourself taken care of first. No one can take care of you except yourself.
Where I live in Michigan, we have a program through United Way of MI that you can call and they can steer you in whatever direction you need to go...food pantry for feeding your family, low-cost or free health care, social services, etc.
Is your husband a veteran? My DH is a vet, Vietnam era, and the VA has resources you can use too. The "Veteran's Trust Fund" helped pay our mortgage one time when we hit the wall. They only wanted to know what had happened and how we had gotten behind. Also too, check into any of your county programs. When I lost my job, I was considered low-income (DUH!) and the state of MI came out and replaced our leaky doors with metal, leakproof doors ND blew in insulation to help cut down the heating bills.
Please, please, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. There are a lot of us out there that would fall apart at the seams if our paychecks were even one day late.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers as any time is a bad time to be in this boat, let alone at Christmas time.
Time for a podiatrist evaluation & new shoes/sneakers before

I have always been barefoot
I have big feet and there is NO WAY that shoes fit. I learned that day 1 of school...LOL! You are not the only one. When it is cold out, light slippers.
Barefoot always smiling
and what about the commercial about the donuts with Rachel with that dyed black hair. Ugh! It at least used to be pretty brown with gold highlights. I told husband she looked like Motricia.
barefoot comment
Did a foot doc tell you that's why your arches fell? My foot doc told me years ago the best thing you can always do is go barefoot when you can and otherwise wear ballet type slippers around the house and flats otherwise. She said women have ruined their feet with heels (I know my mom did.) I'm 65 and am barefoot in the house almost all the time. Hope you footsies stay comfy, though!
Yes, that's what I heard too, that going barefoot
is the best one can do for one's feet. Thanks, so I will continue going barefoot.
Running around barefoot ruined my feet
Now I have to invest more money in Birkenstock's because arches have fallen. As a person ages sometimes those really good feet might come back as oh, my aching feet.
Not the pedal foot!!! arg
I dropped a HUGE heavy glass cooking dish on my pedal foot, actually knocked it off the stove onto my foot. Fortunately it didn't break but holy freaking crap does my foot hurt. I'm sure my foot isn't broken but the whole area that got hit is now a nice shade of black. I am not ambidextrous with my feet! lol. Kay...done with my pity party.
can you put something under the foot pedal to (sm)
raise it up? Is the back fo your leg touching your chair too much? Maybeif you raise up your foot you will get better circulation.
Earth Shoes....heel lowered in Earth Shoes
Will they all be barefoot or wearing flip flops? Would just go for a simple sun dress or sheath,

The foot that hurts is not using the pedal.
The pain is in my left foot, but my right foot uses the pedal. I think if I tried using my left foot on the pedal it would be too painful...
Socks
and barefoot in summer.
About the socks
remember that they need to fit appropriately (proper graduated tightness getting looser at the top)or they can do more harm than good.
Elevate whenever you can ... maybe try to switch feet with the pedal so you can take turns getting each leg up.
I had that trouble for awhile (b4 doing MT work), but it went away. No idea what the deal was. I have always been thin and rarely use salt.
My first thought is gout, but if it is only associated with using your foot pedal I'm not sure.SM
Have you tried using your other foot with the pedal and elevating the foot that is swollen and hurts. I always switch my feet throughout the day and elevate the one I'm not using.
I'd hold off on the foot pedal, Scott, sm
as you may hook up with a company that will provide you one that is specially programmed. I bought a wav pedal a few years ago and never used it.
You know, your foot pedal crisis made me think...
if that ever happens to you again where you really need a foot pedal, put out an SOS to your fellow MTs. I have a collection of foot pedals that are not for my current platform but in perfect working order. I'd be happy to send one out to an MT in need.
Slipper-socks
Me too! I love slipper-socks. They keep my toes nice and warm and I am able to feel the pedal well. :)
I thought this was a typo & you meant "foot pedal" LOL nm

Anyone had shin splints or swelling in your pedal foot? sm
Been doing this type of work a long time, and I am fairly overweight. I get swelling in my calf and ankle on the right, and it is usually worse at the end of a long day of working. Also the front of my shin has been sore for a while, I think actually shin splints from pedaling all the time. Anyone else have or had this?
Thanks
I am wearing white socks
//
Me, too! Socks for sleeping have to be white! :) nm

Thick socks. I have the same problem.
Nah...I just tuck 'em into my socks...
Need some ideas for some warm socks sm
I know, I know, it isn't even winter yet as my husband would say. It's in the 50s outside and my feet are like ice. Right now I have them buried under the heating pad. Can't use a space heater because then my room gets like 110. Any ideas for some nice, warm, nonbinding socks as tight socks make my legs and ankles hurt and just plain drive me nuts.
way back when I trained i used a hand control instead of foot pedal, don't know if they still mak
them now, but you controlled it with the bottom part of your hand by hitting the buttons - forward, play, rewind. Might check into that. Of course, that was about 28 years ago. I really like it, but the only time I ever saw it was at the first hospital I worked.
Same problem here, I mostly wear slipper-socks.

For really big plants, I put cotton socks on my hands and just rub
s
I wear Berkie sandals with socks now

Vaseline & socks overnight - not sexy but works nm
...
Bag balm and sweat socks...Nasty but very effective...
My feet get so dry they crack and bleed, summer or winter. It takes me about 3 days of sleeping in sweat socks, but it works. Also I swear by anything with shea butter in it, especially anything from Bath and Body Works rocks!!!. I also swear by Gold Bond Ultimate Soothing skin therapy lotion. It has shea butter in it too and it rocks too. There is no real smell to it so if you are allergic or sensitive, then this will work.
I wonder if we could somehow augment our MT salaries by being spokespeople for these companies. LOL.
thin!

Thin....
I have a great family, so I am loved. I have an awesome God, so I am forgiven. I have a nice life, so I am content.
Would just really like to be thin again. Heck, I'll settle for thinner.
Great question, BTW!
For you thin MTs - how do you do it??? (sm)
I have met some of my coworkers and they are thin as can be - I have gained so much weight since I have been MTing full time. How do you do it!!???
Is your child really thin?
I noticed you said soccer and dance- females have been known not to have periods at all if really, really thin. You will probably hear from others saying to take her to the doctor- I have a daughter and I would say probably is normal with just starting- it would not be that much of a big concern for me.
I'm thin and my husband is
sort of like that too. Nothing like what I'd heard men were like. Apparently the availability of internet porn is one possible explanation. On CSI they called guys who can't enjoy real women anymore a "porn creep." Another possible explanation is that he has an undiagnosed medical problem such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, so that the only time his body responds is in the morning, when testosterone is highest. This isn't just a sex problem; it's a communication problem. Getting guys to open up and express their needs/concerns/issues is tough. I've always been impressed with the way Dr. Phil discusses the differences between men and women, and how issues can be resolved, but out of laziness I'm not motivated enough to push my DH to resolve his issues. He does show his love and appreciation of me in many other ways, so I'm just living without the physical side marriage 99% of the time. Oh, my DH claims to want sex, but he also expects me to attack him in whatever way it is he wants to be approached, and I'm stubborn in my believe that he's the one that should be coming to me. That's all it would take to get me turned on, and the fact that I've actually been rejected many times when I tried to make hints or even flat out requests has really turned me off. Nope, if he wants it, he can just approach me.
No offense but if that's what thin people have to eat...
I'd rather be fat. LOL
Maybe you do have an eating disorder. You don't have to be thin
to have one. If your weight is an issue you the one that has the power to change it. Been overweight all of my entire life, but this is the year I'm determined to tackle it. Just too bad I didn't do it 20 years ago.
No, not really thin, but very muscular. Thanks for the reply. nm
People being thin skinned again.
Trashy people, as you stated, can live anywhere. Britney and her family definitely fit the classic trailer trash. Don’t have a thing against trailers, my father had 1, my aunt had 1, I had 1 before- but surely to goodness when someone says that you should understand matter of speech as to denote people who fit the bill of lower class. If you don’t fit that saying, then I would not worry.
ever try freezing the thin mints?
Oh, he still could be married. Never too rich or too thin! NM

Why do some thin women dress
like hoes? I'd rather see the outline of a roll through an ill-fitting shirt than see some girl's entire butt crack. That's just NASTY.
Don't be jealous of those who are thin...most CAN do something about their weight if they tried.
NM
People are so thin skinned now days, tell me
why if a woman could not have a baby, would she be going into a store and picking up a can of formula? Honest to pete, I have about heard it all now. There are millions of women who can or cannot have children. What is the big deal about birthing? You said all you have to go thru, like? This is an either you can or you can't. It is simple. I had children and chose not to breastfeed, did not feel any way different from a person who did. I think once labor you about have it made.
LOL, I like pizza in Italy...thin crust...sm
But there are many NY foods I crave (live in the south now)......actually entire neighborhoods I crave...Chinatown, Little Italy, Germantown, etc.
Slather them with a thin coat of vegetable oil SM
and rub on some salt, pepper and a little red pepper. Put them in a baking dish and bake in the oven at 400 degrees for an hour. Then you can slather them with barbecue sause and serve with some rice and veggies.
That is what I thought too-blood!! and JuliA is way too thin.
X
Another good faith based one is Thin Within
you can Google Thin Within on the web also. It focuses on how you feel about yourself. After going through it for the first time I was able to separate ME and how I felt about ME from how I felt about the extra pounds I carry.
I have avoided Weigh Down because I have some issues with some beliefs and practices of the founders, but I have heard it is a well designed and good program.
