It could be yeast, but it could also be contact dermatitis, I suppose. Or maybe it started out as contact dermatitis, and now it has yeast since that's a moist environment.

I don't think you should cut the hairs because the cut ends can be irritating if it's anything like trimming lower areas (ahem).

Get him a tube of jock itch cream. There is Lotrimin, but that takes a longer course than that newer one. I can't think of the name, but it's the one that only takes a 7-day course. If he doesn't get quick relief with that, then it probably is not a yeast.

If it is a yeast, he can take a product like PB8, which is a probiotic acidophilus. He can try to avoid eating sugar (which is why the capsule form may be more effective than eating yogurt).

I'd change to a sensitive-skin type detergent too.

After finishing the week of jock-itch cream he can use medicated powder like the medicated Gold Bond. It comes in a generic that's cheaper, but it has talc, acacia, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, salicylic acid, thymol, zinc stearate. That ought to keep any yeast from recurring.

If it is a contact dermatitis, there are other products he can use for an antiperspirant. I've seen them, like at the natural product type stores, but I can't give you a brand name or specific recommendation.
