Shingles - most painful thing I have experienced

Posted By: Patti on 2007-02-20
In Reply to: Anyone diagnosed with shingles and if so - June

Have had several  outbreaks.  First one ever was on back, last two to three have been on my inner thigh.   The first two times on my thigh had an actual breakout and it was so painful I expected when I looked down that there should be this large gaping hole there and all that was present were these pesky little red spots.  It always starts out like a band is too tight and my skin is burning and then the red spots would appear.   Last year I only had the burning pain and no actual outbreak.  I can tell when it is coming though as I get very, very tired and can fall asleep at anytime.  Have tried the medication for it but hated taking just to suppress something that only came every 2 to 4 years.   They did come more often when I was going through my divorce and financial problems but have not had a breakout or symptoms for over 2 years.  But again, it is like having an open sore on your skin and  one of the most painful thing I have experienced -- above my broken knee cap, broken leg/ankle, ovarian cysts, kidney stones.  Sorry if this is your case.  But I do not have the residual neuralgia all the time just for a couple of weeks after the symptoms have gone.

I have experienced both
and never with a female did I doubt myself- if my husband/partner wanted to be with same sex, then I would not take 1 step to stand in his way. I think the poster is up against much more than she thinks. I do not think most guys are that "curious" to spend that much money on gay lines, chat lines with guys and such. Getting some gay books would be much less expensive- but then I think he is probably into wanting to hook up with guys, not just looking.
What I have experienced in that past -
I agree with the other poster. That money is really *good faith money.* The buyer puts that money up in order to show you they want the house and for you to hold it for them until closing. You will not see any money of any kind until closing. If the deal falls through you can often collect that money or a portion of it. You really need to keep in close contact with your real estate agent. After all, they are getting paid mighty well to sell your home! :-)
If you've never experienced it,
of course you'll never understand it. I used to be a weight snob, too. Payback stinks. Age, hormones, sedentary job, lack of sleep, stress, childbirth, and quitting smoking are all weight gain triggers.

We don't even eat fast food, fried foods, fattening foods or keep junk food in the house. Lack of exercise is probably the biggest factor.

FWIW, I have a friend who went from overweight to anorexic. It's not pretty. She looks like an emaciated skeleton. She has no energy to do anything except lay down on the couch watching TV. It's only a matter of time before she dies. They've taken her to doctors and the hospital. They tried to have her committed and make her eat. She refuses all medical care and food. Be careful what you wish for. She's been wasting away on her couch for two years now, unable to clean her house or do anything. She has to have people help her bathe and go to the bathroom. It's a lousy way to die. She's only hurting those people around her.
i haven't experienced
the orgasmic stuff, and think that is probably why i could take it or leave it. I agonized over this for awhile, saw counselors (a joke), and tried all kinds of things said to 'help', but they didn't. Like stated above, i aim to please my partner, and appreciate all the other things that encompass a marriage, and quit worrying about what apparently isn't meant to be for me.
Curious if anyone has experienced this
or opinions on what it may be. My daughter every now and then, this has been going on for about 6 months, will get hot, hands tingling, heart beating fast, and really nauseated. It seems to only happen late at night and only occasionally. She's 18 and refuses to go to the doctor. She has thrown up from it once or twice, but then is fine soon after. It usually doesn't last very long. Usually we can get her cold enough, etc., that she doesn't throw up. I wonder if it's hormones or anxiety or what. She's not really under a lot of stress right now, so even though it sounds a lot like anxiety other than the vomiting, I just don't think that's it. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? (And no she's not pregnant.)
Has anyone experienced this type of ear problem?
Hi all!

I woke up this morning, and I have a "drumming, vibrating" sound in my left ear, but only when I tip my head down to the side. When my head is held straight, there is no sound at all! I have not had a cold, nor have I been congested. I am debating calling my PCP as it really doesn't bother me that much and there is no pain whatsoever; however, I haven't started transcribing for the day, and maybe it will bother me then?!? I have been trying to do some research on the Internet, and I have come across everything from perforated eardrums to bugs in my ear!! I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem before I start to panic?!?

TIA!
Have you ever had braces? They are painful
he has even had an abcess from the braces rubbing against his cheeks, had to be seen by specialists. This is his reward for putting up with the pain and I think he will definite remember that for years to come!
It's cruel. It's a very painful procedure for the cat - sm
as their paws are very sensitive. They don't just remove the claw - they remove the entire terminal phalanx. They lose their first line of defense against attack, or their ability to climb, though they can still jump.

It can also lead to litter box problems due to sore feet, and other behavioral problems.

Instead, buy a little animal toenail-clipper and clip the nails every few weeks. Cheaper, and MUCH more humane.

If I cared about the chair, I'd just put a cover over it for everyday use, so it'll be nice for company. But my cat's health & well-being is worth more than any piece of furniture.
I know someone who had a procedure because it became extremely painful -nm
:)
I hadVonage & experienced choppy & dropped calls. They are much like AOL
and if you do cancel you have to pay a hefty cancellation fee.  Never again.
painful at first but wedge a piece of cotton
from a cotton ball underneath the corner - sometimes numbing with some topical agent like neosporin plus helps a little.  I cut mine too short because walking in tennies aggravate me and this happens.  Works pretty well - wedge it under with a tweezer.
I agree with you on declawing - it's a painful procedure -sm
and can lead to other behavioral problems. I think the scratching has less to do with the claws than their instinct to scratch. One of my cats is a front-declaw (she came that way, unfortunately) and I feel SO sorry for her. She gets so frustrated when she can't pick anything up with her front paws. She still 'scratches', too, but always uses the scratching post. They do seem to prefer that to anything. My other cat sometimes uses the rug, but it seems to be more as a precursor to a game of chase between them. I trim my clawed cat's nails frequently. The only furniture she tries to scratch on is the bedpost, which is sort of a wicker-type material I got at Ikea. But she does it rarely, and if I really cared about it, I'd protect it somehow.

You might be able to protect the furniture, at the same time enhancing the look, by getting several throws to put over vulnerable areas. Or, if it really only matters if they look good for company, I'd cover the entire piece. That way you wouldn't have to vacuum cat hair, either.

Finally, another option is a product called 'Soft Paws' - a plastic 'fake nail', basically, that is glued on over the existing claw. Kind of a pain to apply, and they do shed off when the outer nail sheds. But they look cute, come in lots of pretty colors (including clear), and they can save the furniture without traumatizing the cat.
seriously painful; research Lidoderm 5% patch to assist.

Has anyone here had the painful problem of having to place their parent in a nursing home? SM
My beautiful dad passed away last year.  My mother and father were devoted to one another, my mother always "taken care of" by my father in every way, married 67 great years.  My mom has always had excellent health, but after about 1-1/2 years, she has deteriorated to the point where I do not know her and I am scared, she is frail, not eating, almost unable to walk, struggles to dress herself or do for herself, will not accept a home health aide, we are trying to cook and clean for her at home but it is getting very scary, she just turned 90 and she seems to be failing fast.  I am so sorry this is so long, but it is all so complicated, it is like she gave up the second my dad died.  Anyone go through this yet????
shingles
The most crucial thing with shingles is to see a doctor immediately and get started on an antiviral - your family doc will do.  I had it - mine wasn't too bad - but I got treatment immediately.  Everyone in my family has had it multiple times - most the time not bad.  If you do have chronic pain they treat with membrane stabilizers - Neurontin, for example.  But the sooner you are treated the less likely you will have chronic pain.  If at all possible - see someone now!!!!
shingles

wow - my mom and sister have had multiple times - my sister was on immunosuppression, mom had more than her share of steroids, dad had multiple times, eventually diagnosed with leukemia, but no one said anything about that.  Mine I believe were totally attributed to stress but no one mentioned anything about that.  will have to research further.

shingles? nm

Shingles?
My husband was experiencing SEVERE rib pain, where he felt as if his ribs were being pried with a pry bar.  He had shingles.  Shingles are very, very painful.  The doctor only found one tiny mark on his chest area, but apparently they were inside.
shingles
I'm 30 and I think i possibly may have shingles.  Is this a seriously bad thing???
shingles

Good new regarding shingles!  I just saw where they now have a new medicine, injectable, to prevent shingles from ever occurring.  If a person has had chicken pox as a child, they are eligible to get the new vaccine.

Anyone diagnosed with shingles and if so
how long had you had before the diagnosis and have you had any complications from it, such as constant pain, etc. Thanks
shingles on face

About 4 years ago, I had a mastoidectomy the middle of May.  The middle of June, I came in exposure range with a child with chickenpox at Wal-Mart, and 2 weeks later I developed shingles.  Could have been coincidence, but I figure stress related, and I, too, have hypothyroidism.  No other testing was done, but it hurt so bad I couldn't even touch my hair let alone my head.  I had it on right forehead, bridge of nose, and up through scalp.

By the way, something else that really helps with the healing process and pain of it all is Pantothenic acid capsules from the herbal store.

Could it be shingles or chick pox? nm

Had shingles before, do not think that is playing
a role and gosh I would hope it would be costochondritis. Funny to say that but when I pulled up some other things, much worse than I would care to hear was wrong. I have physical exam scheduled for a day next month but think I will just walk in either this Sunday or Monday and just wait to see someone. The pain is really unbearable. I took Tramadol for it but dulls a little but not all.
Like you, I have fibro and broke out with shingles for the first
time this past month. OMG, could not tell which was the worse. Do you use anything like fish oil or glucosamine? My hubby gave me the fish oil and it helped me a lot with the stiffness in the joints. My fibro started in my late 50s.
Yes, just had shingles a couple of months ago but
the other has been going on for several years now. By the way, I would suggest anyone who ever had chicken pox to do yourself a favor, take the vaccine to prevent shingles- you do not want to have this - it can be prevented.
Shingles like I thought but has anyone known of an underlying malignancy with this?
Went to the dermatologist this morning, almost sure I was shingles and was. She started me on Valtrex and also asked me to get some other tests, labs, chest x-ray, mammogram as she said underlying malignancy could also play part. She said this is autoimmune and being as I have hypothyroidism, asked if this could be playing a part which it could she said. Anyone else out there who had the diagnosis and this turned out to be a malignancy or just stressful reaction, etc. Thanks.
Ever had shingles? Could be post herpetic neuralgia. sm
My doc said most of my upper back pain is from that. It shoots to where ever it decides to go, never know where next. Neurontin seems to help.
Received a dx today of fibrocystic breast disease. Painful lumps in my breast. Going for a mammo
towards the end of the month. Anyone have any info on this disease?
Happiness is a heart thing; pleasure is a head thing.nm

I do the same thing
I like it when there is a web site that has pictures of the docs/PAs/nurses . . . so funny to see how they look, after already having an image in my mind from hearing their voice.

I once had a boss, with whom I had only corresponded by e-mail, IM, etc. When I finally did speak with her on the telephone, my image of her changed completely, although I still do not know what she really looks like. In this case, she went from a very professional-looking, large (as in big-boned, tall, etc.) red head, to a very large (as in fat), short, still red-headed (but in a messy bun, rather than professional shoulder-length style), barefoot, straw-hanging-out-of-her-mouth, country bumpkin. LOL :)
it cut off the first thing is said.
i said to say how you wish you could change it all for him but you cant...and also, the plot of this angle would be putting guilt onto him that what his father has done to him, he did to him...not to your children and that they shouldnt have to endure the same pain as he has to go thru.  when i play this reverse psychology stuff with my husband, of course he gets angry..bla bla..says whatever, btu then i always see him using my advise later..it does soak into their hearts.
Only thing you can do is pay or it will
go on your credit. Sorry this happened but I would not cosign even if it were for my own child if I thought there was even a remote chance that they would default from lack of responsibility/funds. I would tell her that you will pay it but that she has to pay you back and set up a payment schedule for her to pay you back. If she will not go to the other girl, that is her problem, not yours. Tell her she will have to pay you back and be emphatic about it, even if it is at $10 a month to show her that is not the way to handle responsibility.
The only thing I know is what
my realtor told me. When we were signing contracts, there was a special on TV about this. He made some comments because apparently he does not think this is a good idea. From what I know, you cannot see inside the house before the auction or have an inspection or anything. It is as is. Unfortunately, you do not know what type of structural problems this could include. They showed one guy who bought this house he had his eye for a long time at a very cheap price. When he got in there to start renovations, he found a lot more problems with it than he anticipated. Luckily, he was a contractor though and had the means to fix it up cheaper than you or I would and was actually selling these homes once finishing them. He said that one he about broke even on. He said it was a hit and miss when buying like that.

I agree with the other poster though that you should find out the laws in your state first and see if it is occupied still which could present another headache in itself. Good luck!
It was the best thing I ever did. sm
Had abdominal hysterectomy due to endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adhesions, fibroids, etc.

I wish I did it sooner is all I can say. I was up and out of bed the following morning. I, like you, had previous c-section, so I anticipated the pain, etc.

Really, no big deal for me at the age of 37. I am completely without pain now. What a relief! Had problems since I was 13 - now none! I can honestly say I feel like a new person.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

My son does the same thing... sm

Who says we're not focused on our work in our home environment????  AAAYYY?

My doc said the same thing
live your life. I've not had a flare since 13 months ago. I've defintely found keeping my mind busy and my body active makes for a better attitude.
We do the same thing. nm
nm
Only thing I would add is that I would definitely not
allow my child to talk to this person on the telephone - that is what caller ID is for.  Otherwise wonderful advice.
I was going to say the same thing, I am also
wondering why such a wonderful man would have two ex-wives.
One more thing -
Do give your MIL the number of the vet you use in case she needs to take kitty there for something. I have done this with the people who have watched my cats over the years. They have never needed to take them to the vet for anything, but it gave me peace of mind knowing it was in place should it be needed. It sounds like you have covered all the rest. Enjoy your trip!!
And another thing....
I didn't choose to work at home because I was too lazy to go find another job outside of the home. I chose to quit my job outside of the home (making more money than I do now!) so that I could do this instead.

Also, I am starting school this year to get another job outside of the home. I guess when I am balancing all this and going to school, I will still be lazy and unprofessional to you! Whatever....

Like I've said before, people chose professions for all kinds of reasons. Staying at home was my reason. So what?! That does not mean you do your job any better than me or the rest of us. That is all in your head, which is a very big one at that!
first thing I would do - sm
Pay off all bills and set up college funds and trusts for my kids and any grandkids I may get in the forthcoming years.

Then I would be a little more conservative and buy a fixer upper and turn it into my dream home. Who needs to build another house when there are so many beautiful old neglected homes out there?!

The next thing I would do is buy this old building in town that used to be a school and renovate it into a group home for unwed mothers/fathers, dormitory style so I could help them build futures for themselves and their children.

That would be my dream.
Maybe she needs to go out and do her thing? nm
x
And another thing-
I would be willing to bet she does not show up on Dancing with the Stars. When I heard she was supposed to be on there, I thought nah, don’t think so.
I know that this is not the same thing..sm
but I had a kitty cat who had diabetes. with unchecked diabetes, the kidneys are at risk. my kitty started kidney failure and had alot of the same symptoms you described. She would not eat or drink, because she did not want to p because it hurt to p. She became so severely dehydrated, I had to put her down. she was 13 years old. Has your doggie been checked for diabetes?? It is just a thought and I am not trying to scare you, but I would have started forcing fluids before this, with your doggie. Good luck. I hate it when pets get sick and you don't know how to help them! Also, has she been checked for the parvoux (sp) virus??
One more thing......
I went back and re-read your message after posting. Your fruits are from your hard labor, but are also a blessing from God. I know that sounds confusing, but believers know that you have to work hard to produce fruits. It's what you do with those fruits that make the difference. God does bless you for your hard work.

To explain it better:
The bible says this: Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

I'm going through the same thing here!

One of my dogs (a gay little Lhasa-Poo) has the itchy horrors.  The vet took skin scrapings looking for mites but found nothing and yet still prescribed Ivermectin (a wormer) in the hopes that the itching was caused by some creepy crawly that just couldn't be seen.  I just squirted this stuff into his mouth every 2 weeks for 3 doses total and nothing.  Everyone is on FrontLine for flea prevention and we did the prednisone along with something like benadryl and different foods...just like you have done!  I even went so far as to shave him myself down to the skin.

After all that "experimentation" and retarded vet bills, he still has the friggin' itching!  Vet thinks it is allergies as well and recommends we just live with it, as the testing is going to be a heck of a lot more $$$ and it carries no guarantee either of finding out the true cause.

I say my dog is allergic to himself...or us...or the other animals here.  Can't do much about it.  I figure if he's happy, eating, sleeping, and pretty much enjoying life, it's just going to be one of his annoying quirks...that along with leaving skidmarks on the rug!

Good luck and keep us updated on if you find anything out that works for you!

oh - and another thing -
the other poster that mentioned allergies - my mom has had two dogs now with severe allergies to grass and fleas.  Even though she was using Revolution - even if a flea got on her and died immediately it caused problems.  One was put on steroids and ended up losing all of her hair from the steroids.
One thing I can say...........sm
My mom used Oil of Olay her entire adult life. She did not spend a lot of time in the sun. She got up every morning and put on Oil of Olay before work, and then at night. She is 67 years old and her skin looks better than mine. She doesn't have the uneven tone and skin blotchiness that I do. So, I have been thinking about giving the line a try myself!!!!
I did the same thing, and my mom do any of the - sm
organizing or planning. I did ask her advise on my dress and the color flowers but that was it. I even picked out her dress! Yes I am a control freak, but it all came off the way I wanted it to and it all went very smoothly as I had it organized it from day 1. I had a vision of what I wanted and was able to get it. I had 9 months to plan it, but had it all ironed out and set up within 5 weeks of my engagement. My mom did go dress shopping with me of course and helped be pick out my dress but that was basically the extent of her involvement. I had a very small wedding which helped too (50). She was not the type of person though to stick her nose into other people's business which I think is a very good trait (especially in a MIL). My in-laws to be stayed out of it too, though I did ask them for input on the rehersal dinner in terms of menu/ordering as they did pay for that. I know how to be a good politician when necessary.
